So my goal was to get an application going for extracting assets from the XEX's for the 360. After a couple hours in front of the beloved Hex Editor and a while in my trusted C++ Compiler I got an application going to do just that. Remember that in order to use this you NEED to decrypt and decompress the XEX first (xorloser's XEX tool FTW).
Usage:
Info on the app: xexextractor -i
Extract: xexextractor -e "In XEX" "Out Path"

Brilliant zombie mash-up Dead Rising will lurch onto Xbox Live's Games on Demand service on 26th January.
Like other GOD titles, Dead Rising will cost 20 quid.
Released in 2006, Dead Rising was one of the first good Xbox 360 games. You play Frank West, a photographer and journalist that explores a town he later discovers is overrun with zombies. Luckily for West he turns out to be brilliant at killing them via any prop at hand, including lawnmowers, footballs and park benches.
A sequel's planned for release on PC, PS3 and Xbox in the second quarter of 2010. You can find out more about that on the Dead Rising 2 gamepage.
Meanwhile, head over to our Dead Rising review for a trip down memory lane.

A firmware update will bring two great features to the Zune HD this spring. The first is native XviD support, which is self-explanatory. The second requires just a tad more explanation.
The Smart DJ feature, now on the Zune's PC software, will make its way to the HD, offering on the fly track suggestions. That's OK—pretty similar to the iPod's Genius features—but what will make the feature great is that Smart DJ will also work over the Zune HD's Wi-Fi connection, allowing you to stream these suggested tracks from the cloud (instead of needing to have all that suggested music stored on the device already).

American mag Game Informer offers anticipated first look at Bungie’s latest Xbox 360 Halo title
Developer Bungie is promising a massive technological jump in its upcoming Halo Reach, which is due out ion Xbox 360 later this year.
Fresh details of the title come courtesy of US mag Game Informer, with scans of the latest issue offering a long-awaited insight into Bungie’s wide-reaching plans.
The game itself is a squad-based affair and will follow the fortunes of the six members of Noble Team. Bungie hopes the game will re-establish the Covenant as a terrifying menace rather than the speculative companions they became in later titles in the Halo series.
Reach will be the first Halo game to use motion capture and will also use Image Metrics’ impressive facial animation technology. The result is said to offer far more believable transitions between standing, walking and running.
Other technological leaps include a massive jump in light versatility with up to 40 dynamic light sources supportable. Previous titles have maxed out at four. Also up is the number of on-screen enemies.
In addition, gamers can expect a detailed weather system, a range of new weapons for both the Spartans and Covenant and, for the first time in the series, stealth kills. Armour will also be more customisable, offering various perks such as speed or active camouflage.

EA's Jens Uwe Intat tells MCV that new controllers will drastically grow the market
In an exclusive interview with MCV, EA Europe’s senior VP Jens Uwe Intat has claimed that the upcoming Xbox 360 Natal and PS3 Motion Controller will reach audiences left untouched by the Nintendo Wii.
"The new controllers from Sony and Microsoft will allow two things," he told MCV. "They will allow new game experiences for existing players.
"But they will also allow what Nintendo has achieved to some extent, and that is to get new people into gaming – people for whom a traditional controller is not the most natural way to play, for people who are much more comfortable using something more intuitive. I think they will expand the audience even further than Wii and the Wii Remote Controller.
"Our studios are working with the first parties to create some interesting games for those controllers. We can expand the audience for an existing game, but it’s also a good time to come up with brand new ideas and way to play.
"We’re working on the specifics of our plans, but we will have games available that work with both controllers at launch."

Microsoft's Robbie Bach has said that 70-80 per cent of games publishers in the world are committed to releasing Natal-based games.
Speaking to the Financial Post at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, Bach also confirmed Microsoft's first party studios were currently very focused on releasing early Natal titles that will "show the way" to third parties, and reiterated Microsoft's view the 360 still has enough power to deliver new innovative experiences, negating the need to launch updated hardware in the imminent future.
"We want to have a few titles from Microsoft that show the way and then we want the breadth and power of the ecosystem from our partners to bring lots of new ideas, new innovations, new concepts to the marketplace," said Bach. "Xbox games don't go away; you have to think of all this as additive. I think it adds to the beauty of what's going on."
According to Bach, Sony and Microsoft are in a better position today than Nintendo in terms of the future of their consoles.
"There's still plenty of power available in the Xbox 360, there's still plenty of power available in the PlayStation 3. Nintendo probably can't say that. They may have a capacity and a power problem on the graphics side that they need to deal with. But when I look at the [overall] cycle, I think there's still plenty of upside given what we have today.
"The console world has changed fundamentally in a very important way: Innovation doesn't require new hardware. The fact that we can deliver a new Xbox Live service every year is a very powerful thing and completely changes the experience without changing the console, without requiring the industry to reboot every five years.
"The fact that we can introduce something like Project Natal and have it work on every Xbox 360 and create an entirely new way to interact with the system speaks to all of that. For the industry, I think this is a tremendously positive thing. For consumers I think it's tremendously positive.
"The thing you have to be careful about, and the thing we will watch intensively, is you have to keep producing innovation. I know we've started down the back side of the cycle when I say 'hey, there's innovations and ideas we have that we can’t implement on the system.' That’s when you have to start thinking about what’s next."
Bach also touched upon Microsoft's business model for the 360, saying that it will be far easier for third-parties to make money from titles developed for Natal than it is on Wii.
"Our model is certainly about third-party publishers making money," he said. "We design our system for third-party publishers. We use our first-party business - Halo, Alan Wake and those sorts of things - to show people the way and to drive innovation. Nintendo, and this is no disrespect, just has a different model. They make most of their money through first-party games that Nintendo produces. That's absolutely their business model. And it's a great business model, it's just different, but it makes it hard for third-party publishers."

News via http://www.eurasia.nu/modules.php?na...ticle&sid=2510
Trancy released a new version of XBR-Flash. With LFlash it was already possible to update your XBReboot on NAND-16mb consoles directly from your Xbox 360 booted into a Linux Distro like Gentoo (so no need to flash over LPT or USB again). Based on LFlash, XBR-Flash however will now allow you to flash on 256/512mb consoles as well and v0.2 comes with more additional features.
Quote from xboxhacker.net:
'USE THIS SOFTWARE AT OWN RISK.
Two new features must be tested for 16/256/512MB Nands, so I need some more Beta-tester again
- Bad Block Management (BBM)
- KV and Config Injection
usage: ./a backup.bin xbr_virgin.bin -i
backup.bin Backup from your current Nand
xbr.bin XBReboot file
-i [optional] Injecting KV and Config from the current Nand to XBR-File
If you want to use -i (Injecting KV and Config), KV and Config must be valid in the current Nand, because XBR-Flash read the current Nand out and inject this to the XBR-file
Thanks goes to tmbinc, Redline99 and other I forgot
History
v0.1 initial by tmbinc
v0.1.x used sources from Redline99 (Xell mods)
v0.1.1 modified by trancy
v0.2 Added Bad Block Management (BBM)
Added KV and Config Injection'
Note: This tool can of course only be only be used if you already run XBReboot/XeLL and want to update to a newer version (will be much faster, certainly on BB NANDs), the first time to perform the hack you will still have to do it over LPT or USB.

While we were flipping through the Facebook this morning, looking for pictures of Bobby Jones with that tramp Kelly Sue Eakins, we couldn't help but notice that our best buds on Ubisoft's Splinter Cell account had put up a sweet new pic. The snap captures our pals helping out some Russian friends with their makeovers (aren't they the nicest guys?), though we can't make any sense of the inexplicable caption below the image that reads, "Co-op mode split screen confirmed!" What does that have to do with makeovers, guys? Come on!

A Netherlands-based Sega fansite recently posted a titillating report received from an anonymous source, who claimed Sonic Adventure would soon be running at breakneck speeds onto Xbox Live Arcade. Accompanying this report is the image seen above, which, in addition to listing the game itself, also mentions an "extend package," which ... well, which we can't say out loud without giggling like schoolchildren.
As psyched as we'd be to see the azure rodent make a not-terrible appearance on the 360, we're going to treat this with as much apprehension as we can muster until we hear something official from Sega.

Lionhead community manager Sam Van Tilburgh recently teased his Twitter followers with a pair of less-than-140-character missives. Tilburgh spent this past weekend "writing storyboard summaries for two new Fable 3 videos," which will apparently "come out when we show Fable 3 for the 1st time at an event next month in SF." Of course, for that second Tweet, we're assuming "SF" stands for San Francisco, and not a much smaller venue, such as "Sam's Foyer."
We're not certain what event Tilburgh is talking about -- it's possible that Lionhead might be planning its own event to introduce the world to the flatulence-simulating technology its discovered over the past year. Regardless, we're not too far off from seeing more of Fable 3, and that fills us with joy.

January 11th, 2010, 21:08 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft says that it's planning on bringing "entirely new original experiences to life" with the addition of Project Natal's controller free add-on later this year, not on reworking already existing games to make them Natal ready.
When Microsoft first showed off the controller-free Project Natal tech at E3 2009, it did so with both new content—Milo, Ricochet, Paint Party—and existing games—Burnout Paradise—with new motion-sensing control. Later, Natal-ready versions of Beautiful Katamari and Space Invaders Extreme were shown at Tokyo Game Show.
Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg told Kotaku at CES that we should expect more of the former, the new, built from the ground up Natal experience than traditional content repurposed a la Burnout Paradise.
"What we want to do with Natal is bring entirely new original experiences to life," Greenberg said. "These are going to be brand new original games and brand new entertainment experiences that never existed before. Because there's nothing else like it, developers are going to be making brand new content for us."
That said, Microsoft is open to all possibilities when it comes to Natal implementation.
"There may be some opportunities over time, where because you have millions of sensors in living rooms, that there may be elements of games that will integrate Natal into it," Greenberg added. It's unlikely that Microsoft would frown upon Natal integration in, say, the upcoming Xbox 360 game Halo: Reach, as developer Bungie has hinted at in previous interviews, later clarifying that it wouldn't do so until it "makes sense."
"If you were going to make a Natal game, it probably wouldn't be Forza 3," Greenberg said. "So what would be a fun racing game that you would play controller-free would be different than what you would play with a steering wheel or controller."
What Greenberg doesn't foresee is a batch of motion controlled Wii games cleaned up and recoded to be Natal games.
"Because we are doing something completely original, I don't think you will see Wii games ported over," he said. "That's one of the nice things about not doing the motion sensing controller, we're going to have original concepts."
"When you think about games and new experiences that will appeal to people that maybe have never played games before, I think you do get into a new category with the types of experiences we think about," Greenberg noted. "I don't think that puts us in a Wii category, because we're still a high-definition console, we still have the online community—Live will be very much integrated into these experiences—so I think there's a lot more richness that we're able to bring to life with it. I think the type of games will be different."
And, at this stage, Microsoft is focusing on those game being traditional retail games, not Xbox Live Arcade games or Xbox Live Indie Games.
Greenberg also says that we should think about Natal being used beyond games, including "lifestyle experiences, entertainment experiences and the ability to navigate the dashboard."
"It's not just about playing games," he said.

An ex-NBA star recently asked a group of children where playing Xbox will get them. He was promoting fitness, so he probably expected a negative answer. And he got one.
Here's the Deseret News reporting on the noble effort of former Utah Jazz player Mark Eaton promoting fitness through an National Basketball Association program called NBA Fit:
Eaton asked the group where playing Xbox would take them in their lives. One young boy replied, "A minimum-wage nowhere job." Eaton laughed and told the boys and girls to envision where they wanted to go in their lives.
"Start thinking about what you're going to be great at, because that's the only way to get there," he said. "You have to be the one in charge of that change."
Compare that to last week's talk here at Kotaku about what parents hope kids can get from gaming. All in moderation, right?
Best of luck to those who have found a way to get work by playing Xbox. May your wages not be minimum.

Game companies hate when people trade in gaming goods at game shops. Gamers hate the propensity for Xboxes to break. But were it not for these two things, an alleged crime would not have been exposed.
From the files of news-from-December-about-something-that-happened-in-November comes the Daytona Beach, Florida News Journal's tale of a purloined Xbox.
On November 17, a person reports to the police that his Xbox 360 has been stolen from his home, allegedly by a man named Michael Dunbar. The police find their way to a video game trade-in store that has a photocopy of Dunbar's driver's license, fingerprint and proof that — don't get too mad, Microsoft — the Xbox 360 was sold to the shop for $32. Video game companies generally don't like the fact that retailers such as GameStop accept and encourage trade-ins, because the game companies make no money from the re-sales of those traded-in goods.
Our victim had a problem: No serial number for his Xbox 360, ergo no proof that the traded-in 360 was his. But that — don't get mad, gamers — is where the unreliability of Xbox 360 hardware comes in. Now maybe our victim had broken his Xbox 360 himself through his careless gaming. But maybe, just maybe, the machine had one of its issues, as Xboxes do. Usually that would be a bad thing, but in this story, a broken Xbox was just what was needed.
The News Journal reports:
At the time of the report, the victim was not able to provide the police with the serial number of the Xbox. Several days later, the victim's grandmother, who had originally purchased the Xbox contacted the police department and said she had contacted Microsoft Corporation in reference to the investigation. She informed the officer that she previously sent the unit to Microsoft for repairs and when she contacted them they were able to give her the serial number. The serial number provided by Microsoft was identical to the unit Dunbar sold to the video game trader.
As of December, Dunbar faced multiple charges including burglary and dealing in stolen property.
If your Xbox should ever break, send it in for repairs and think of it as protection against potential crooks.

So that meeting a few days ago where financial analysts physically beat a few choice WinMo 7 nuggets out of Robbie Bach yielded something else that's pretty interesting, too: the expansion of the Zune franchise. Virtually everyone and their mother has been calling for a Zunephone since the day the first Zune 30 rolled off the assembly line, and a very, very carefully-worded statement by Bach in the meeting has us believing that we could finally see it make the bold leap to GSM (or CDMA, or both) this year. In response to a question about how Zune fits into Microsoft's mobile strategy, Bach had this to say:
"Now, your other question was about I'm getting old. Zune, so Zune has been critically successful. And the way Zune is going to be successful for us in the future is you should think of that as our media service across multiple screens. We'll continue to have the Zune device screen. But, we now have Zune on Xbox. We have Zune on the PC. There are other places where Zune logically could go that we don't get to talk about yet. And I think lots of different screens with that capability can go."
If you read between the lines there, it certainly sounds like Robbie's got his eyes on the prize -- but whether Zune will come to Windows Mobile or live as its own brand remains to be seen. No guarantees, but we're hoping all will be revealed at MWC next month.
