The future of the Zune as a standalone media player is still a little in doubt, but its future of being able to send crucially important e-mails and, in return, get a boatload of spam is now fully assured. A free e-mail app has been added to the Zune Marketplace supporting Gmail, Windows Live Mail, and of course good 'ol POP3 accounts. Unfortunately all we have to gaze upon is that tiny screenshot over on the right, but it certainly looks familiar enough to fit right into the Zune ecosphere without making any waves. Just make sure you don't go looking for your Steely Dan collection inside the unread folder.

On last week's mailbox after being challenged by his non-Nintendo gaming buddies asked Alex Miller NGamer if a person can be too old for Nintendo, or gaming in general.
This week Dan Marsh contacted Xbox World 360 when Microsoft planned to release a real game made specifically for the core Xbox 360 crowd as well as provide his thoughts on the Kinect hardware and launch line-up.
To have your letter featured on CVG's Mailbox, drop us a line.
Okay, a joke's a joke, when is a Kinect game with the slightest feel of being made for 360 gamers going to be announced? It's a tasty bit of kit for sure, but who the hell are they kidding with their dancing tripe, animal fondling and all that crap?
I don't want to move my furniture for what seems to be some kind of massive Nintendo DS, so where's the action? Where are the zombie games, the war titles, the FIFA tie-in? Or is none of that ever going to be possible, and I've now landed myself with an Xbox add-on which basically offers far more than it can ever deliver?
XBW says: That's the big question, isn't it? Kinect had a storming start, but now people want a flavour of what's to come - and not the 'follow up to Kinect Sports' kind of flavour either.
Who knows what Gears of War on Kinect could deliver? The tech could definitely work with an FPS somehow, but it would require some stripping back - think of all the buttons you need to succeed in a COD or a Gears.
We expect to hear plenty more about this at this year's E3 - but before then Ubisoft will be putting out Child of Eden, which is the first 'proper' Kinect title, i.e the first hardcore Kinect title.
CVG says: We're going to parrot XBW's response with this one and point out Q Entertainment and Ubisoft's Child of Eden, which is offering something unique experience that goes beyond dancing or waving limbs in sports activities.
However, would you put Child of Eden in that category? It sounds like you're looking for very specific, typically 'hardcore' gameplay experiences - which we haven't seen any game replicate yet. In a way E3 2011 will be make-or-break for Microsoft and its Kinect.

We've already seen a fair number of Windows Phone 7 stats, but Microsoft's now gone and provided a proper retrospective for the first anniversary of its debut at the MIX10 conference last year. The standout figure, as usual, is the number of apps, which now stands at 11,500 -- a number that Microsoft is quick to point out it's not "artificially inflating" by listing wallpapers as a category, or boosting by addingcompetitor's apps to increase "tonnage." Microsoft also notes that while the Windows Phone Developer Tools have been downloaded 1.5 million times, it's choosing instead to focus on the number of AppHub community members as a more accurate measure of the number of developers for the platform -- they now total 36,000. It's also revealed that Windows Phone 7 users download twelve apps each month on average, that it's currently adding 1,200 new developers this week, and that 1,100 of the apps in the Marketplace are ad-supported and generating revenue with its Ad Control platform. Hit up the source link below for the rest of the stats.

Capcom has axed Mega Man Universe.
Mega Man Universe was due for release in Japan as a downloadable PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game this spring.
Capcom announced the news today on the game's website, reported by Siliconera, citing "various reasons". Glad that's cleared up.
Mega Man Universe was to focus on user generated content, with players building levels and characters.
It would have allowed gamers to play as other Capcom heroes such as Arthur from Ghost 'N' Goblins and Ryu from Street Fighter.
The interesting title was the brain child of series creator Keiji Inafune - now of course no longer with Capcom.
Last year he said the game aimed to "unite all Mega Man fans together in one place".
"We wanted to preserve as much as we can of the classic 8-bit Mega Man look and feel, while allowing players to project their own view of Mega Man," he said.
"We wanted to create a platform where players can play as their favourite version of Mega Man, or maybe another Capcom character, or something completely different.
"Mega Man Universe is going to be a great game," Inafune added.
Following Inafune's exit from Capcom in October last year, however, the game may have lost support from within the Japanese company.
Before leaving Capcom, Inafune teasingly quipped that Mega Man Universe wasn't all the Mega Man Capcom had planned.
"There are other things going on with Mega Man. This is a big year for me. You haven't heard the last of Mega Man announcements for the future," he said.

Microsoft has begun to investigate claims that users are purposefully manipulating the rating of Xbox Live Indie Games, in order to raise or lower titles in the overall rankings for the service.
"We are investigating a possible misuse of ratings on #XBLIG titles. We'll announce more information here as it develops," read a comment on the official XNACommunity Twitter account.
The issue was first brought to light by Robert Boyd of Zeboyd Games, developers of popular Indie titles Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World. Writing on a Gamasutra blog, Boyd recounted how the developer's game saw an unexpected drop in overall ranking from number six to number 11 in the space of a week.
After investigating he discovered that the creators of Indie game College Lacrosse had asked their fans to raise the ratings of their games - with some taking it upon themselves to give rival titles in the top 10 the lowest possible rating, even though in many cases they had not purchased the game.
Although Boyd was careful to point out that the College Lacrosse developers had not encouraged anyone to negatively mark rival games, they had explained how to create an account and vote even if a fan did not own an Xbox 360.
Boyd questioned whether ratings should be limited only to people who have played the game, or at least the demo, given the severe financial implications of losing a top 10 rating.
The Apple App Store currently allows only users who have purchased an app to rate it.

A new Xbox 360 System Update Preview programme has been announced by Microsoft, with the console manufacturer calling for US-based testers to help prepare for an "updated Xbox 360 disc format".
The announcement was made by Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, although he provided no detailed explanation of the system update or the change in disc format.
The Xbox 360 currently uses standard dual-layer DVDs, with Microsoft previously having supported a separate HD-DVD drive - but only for movie playback, not games.
Although there have been occasional rumours of Microsoft supporting the Blu-ray format the description by Hryb seems to imply only a software update, possibly one that allows developers to use more of a DVD's maximum storage space of 9GB.
Currently only up to 7GB of space can be used for game data, with many games using far less. A recentDigital Foundry analysis suggested that Alan Wake uses only 2.5GB of space.
Update: Digital Foundry sources suggest that the update does indeed relate to increased storage space on the DVD - with an extra 1GB becoming available. The extra space has been found by reducing a DVD-Video partition containing anti-piracy security.
Digital Foundry also speculates that the free copy of Halo: Reach uses the new disc format and is therefore an intrinsic part of the testing program.
Although the Blu-ray disc format used by the PlayStation 3 allows for more storage, only a few Xbox 360 titles have ever had to be shipped on multiple discs - generally ports of Japanese titles such as Final Fantasy XIII and Lost Odyssey. Although Dead Space 2 is a more recent Western example.
Xbox 360 owners wanting to help out as testers are asked to visit the Microsoft Connect site and complete a short survey. Hryb indicates that the company is looking for "multiple thousands of participants", who will be thanked with a copy of Halo: Reach and "other possible rewards".
A few points to add:
The new disc format is not a 'hint' it is a reality, it is known as xgd3 and will have the following addition 'benefits', extra 1gb of game data space for developers, an extra layer for security but not tri-layer, real time integrity checks to fight piracy (ap methods)
Also, the 'testers' are US only, no Canada, Asia or Europe allowed!
Xbox/M$ will never use Blu-ray as they wouldn't want to pay for the rights for every console sold, there is also the arguement that the next generation will be without optical media which would essentially limit piracy and bricks and mortar businesses.

March 31st, 2011, 02:00 Posted By: wraggster
Rare has only taken advantage of "10 to 15 per cent" of Kinect's technical potential so far - and the studio is going great guns to fully explore the "virtually limitless" possibilites afforded by the device.
That was the message from Rare incubation software director Nick Burton tonight at London's Institute for Contemporary Arts.
Still clearly beaming from the UK firm's BAFTA victory for Kinect Sports, Burton explained that Rare had long been interested in the possibilities of motion control - including experiments with the Xbox 360 Vision camera as far back as 2005.
He said that Rare's modus operandi with Kinect was to "make it conform to the player's control, rather than the other way round".
Burton explained: "Kinect Sports was the first game I've made that my mum has played. She could watch me playing it and instinctively learn the controls just from what I was doing. For core gamers like me, the joypad has evolved, it's been honed. But to others it's intimidatiting."
He revealed that Rare had to overcome the problem of different players' natural movement, especially whilst sprinting - and avoid forcing its customers to move in pre-designated ways in order to win in-game. Some players crouched when running, he said, whilst others stood tall with a wider width between their legs.
In an engaging, enthused talk, Burton gave the audience of games design students and industry figures a "behind the curtain" view of Kinect Sports, showing off how it took advantage of the peripheral's depth sensor to nail players' movement.
Meanwhile, he showed how Kinect's ability to read 20 points on the body allowed for the game to "pick up on the subtleties, like twisting your wrist or the perfect release point during bowling", whilst still allowing those with a less studied understanding of gaming techniques to record pleasing performances.
Burton recollected that Kinect Sports' Football (soccer) mini-game was one of the hardest to get right for Rare. The studio didn't know how to represent running at first, and tried various approaches.
Discarded ideas included getting players to jog on the spot continually - which "left everyone in the studio knackered" - and to give avatars the natural state of sprinting, with the option to stop via a 'trapping' motion and pick a direction by turning. However, combined with shooting, passing and tackling, this was deemed to be "a bit like rubbing your tummy and patting your head".
In the end, Rare gave some power back to the game's AI, with avatars running around the pitch as players picked out the best timed pass to move up the field.
However, it was the future of the device that really got Burton buzzing. He said that Kinect's "layers" of 3D infrared depth reading, ability to track body points and voice recognition meant the possibilities for future software were "virtually limitless". Rare's next Kinect project would take advantage of more of the device's features, he suggested, including online connectivity.
Burton said Rare were avid fans of the so-called Kinect hacks doing the rounds, and had tested out many of the ideas seen on YouTube internally.
He was joined on stage by Microsoft-man-turned-Rare-studio-head Scott Henson, who echoed Burton's opinion - stating that Kinect was a "blank canvas" whose true possibilities were still unknown.
Picking ideas out of the air, Henson said he could see a day where Kinect's ability to read player's identity - and automatically sign them into Xbox Live - could revolutionise the living room with instant, bespoke entertainment.
"Now we've got 'Kinect, pause', which is great," he said - referring to the device's voice recognition during movie playback. "But imagine sitting in your living room and saying: 'Kinect, entertain me.' That's where we're going."
When asked by an audience member if he could see a core game like Halo working with Kinect, Burton queried whether Halo fans would want a traditional "run and gun" experience with motion control - but suggested that a Halo game created for the device itself could work.
On the subject of latency - and how restrictive it could be to Kinect's potential - Burton said that there was less lag between a player's movement and Kinect than between a button press on a traditional pad.
Rare took the wraps of the undeniably fun, polished Kinect Sports at E3 last summer. All eyes now turn to this year's event in June.

Develop Award-nominated Czech studio Amanita Design is no longer interested in future business deals with Microsoft, the studio’s founder has said.
Amanita, developer of unique adventure games Samorost and Machinarium, is believed to have been refused the opportunity to publish its games across Xbox Live Arcade.
“We were already refused by Microsoft to bring the game to Xbox,” he said, as quoted by CasualGaming.biz
“They weren’t interested because the game was already released for Mac and Windows, and Microsoft demanded it as part of an exclusivity deal,” he added.

Once upon a time, the Xbox 360 dashboard looked like the picture above -- then, Microsoft blasted it with yearly updates to transform it into the warm, welcoming interface we've come to know and love. If you're already aware of that fact, then you may also know that a select group of lucky US gamerstypically get to test out the latest revision months ahead of their peers, and today Microsoft's holding sign-ups for a new version that will include "an updated Xbox 360 disc format," whatever that might mean. You'll also get a free copy of Halo: Reach if your name is picked -- which, according to Major Nelson, is much more likely if you're paying for an Xbox LIVE Gold account -- so you'll probably want to dive through ancient email post-haste to find your Windows LIVE ID, head over to our more coverage link and give it a go. Let us know what those new discs are all about if you get in, eh?

According to Microsoft, 2011 is the year Kinect goes hardcore – but we had no idea it meant this.
Heavy Fire Afghanistan is an on rails shooter in which you kill terrorist after terrorist in a dusty war-torn environment.
Its debut trailer is below (first spotted by123kinect.com). It looks like a WiiWare game. Turns out it's the "expanded sequel" to WiiWare games Heavy Fire: Special Operations and Heavy Fire: Black Arms. Really.
Afghanistan, however, launches on the Wii as a boxed retail release. And the PlayStation 3, for use with the Move controller. And the Xbox 360, for Kinect.
Here's the official blurb from publisher Mastiff Games: "Enemy Contact. Open fire! Defend the base. Lock down the streets of the local town. Hunt down the enemy in the forests. Rescue the hostages from the caves. Sweep the enemies out of the mountains. Fly in helicopters. Ride in tanks and trucks. Take it to the ground and get up close and personal with the enemy. Your objective is simple: Grab the biggest gun you can find, then knock out the enemy with your Heavy Fire!"
It looks like Heavy Fire Afghanistan is a US-only release – for now. We're doing some digging.
Amazon has it down for launch on 12th April.

March 30th, 2011, 01:07 Posted By: wraggster
Call of Duty: Black Ops maker Treyarch is hiring for staff to work on a new game – and it sounds like another COD.
Treyarch's website advertises for a raft of positions.
Of particular interest are the advertisements that call for staff who will report to "the design director for the Call of Duty multiplayer team at Treyarch".
One of those is for a gameplay combat designer. The ideal candidate "will design, develop, and tune game mechanics and features, largely in the area of combat systems (such as weapons and attachments) and gameplay mechanics (such as Perks and spawning)," reads the website.
They'll also "manage the game's core rule systems (such as health and damage feedback) from top to bottom. Identify all the edge cases where core rules could be broken and propose solutions," and be "working with the systems designer, co-develop a solid game reward mechanic that keeps players engaged and feeling satisfied without providing an unfair advantage over others".
And they will "review all gameplay mechanics on a consistent basis and drive for the highest level of quality in a design's implementation. This includes working with production to ensure that quality control in the final product provides the player with a flawless and bug-free experience".
The news comes as no surprise. Publisher Activision employs a two-pronged strategy in order to annualise Call of Duty. 2011 is expected to see another Call of Duty game from Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward, perhaps with help from Sledghammer Games and Raven Software.
Treyarch's next Call of Duty game, then, is expected in 2012.
Last month Treyarch game design director David Vonderhaar said "it would be pretty fantastic" to create a near-future Call of Duty.
"It would be kind of a unique opportunity but the way this works out is obviously more complicated than, 'Hey, me and Treyarch are going to make a near-future shooter.' It doesn't work out that way in practice.
"It's a tough question to answer. We have not announced any new Call of Duty games at this time but to answer his specific question I think, personally, it would be pretty fantastic to do near-future, you know? Not necessarily far-future.
"For me personally. I'm just talking for myself."

Microsoft researchers have issued a paper detailing potential improvements in the accuracy and speed of Kinect's sensor routines, although it is unclear if and when the findings will be implemented.
A summary of the paper, and link to the full text, appears on website I Programmer and primarily involves new AI learning routines that can be used to improve the device's ability to discern and track body parts.
Written by Microsoft Research in Cambridge, the labs experiments involve millions of 3D depth maps already identified with body parts. By aggregating the results a 1000 core server was able to create a series of data trees, which could then be used to assign a predicted body part to each piece of 3D pixel data.
The use of the aggregated data allows Kinect to estimate joint positions in a player's 3D model much more quickly than is currently the case. As well as removing the need for a formal calibration the new technology could also be used to reduce lag times from the currently relatively high levels.
The paper suggests that the new system can process a new user in less than 5 milliseconds, an order of magnitude faster than the current technology. Because of the large number of example depth maps the system is also more versatile across a wider range of body types.
The paper does not make it clear if and when the research will be used on retail Kinect sensor, but as a software solution it could potentially be released as a simple firmware update.

Microsoft is running a public preview program to test out "an updated Xbox 360 disc format".
"We are conducting an open call for US based participants* for a public preview to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format," Major Nelson announced today.
The Xbox 360 currently reads games from standard DVD-format discs, which hold up to 8.5-8.7GB on dual-layer discs. This has proved restrictive to some developers, who have been forced to spread games out over multiple discs.
PS3's Blu-ray format holds up to 50GB on a dual-layer, which allowed games like Final Fantasy XIII to feature higher quality sound and cutscenes due to its ample space. Could MS be preparing a higher-density disc for the Xbox?
It offers no further details, with the Major saying: "This is an important update as we continually strive to improve our products and we could not do so without the help of our great Xbox community."
You don't have to do it for free, either. "As part of the preview program, you will receive a copy of Halo: Reach along with other possible rewards," explained Nelson.
MS is calling for "multiple thousands of participants" so it says your chances of getting into the beta are pretty good although it's currently only open to US-based gamers. Xbox Live Silver members can apply, but priority will be given to Gold members so don't fancy your chances.
Head over to this page to sign yourself up.
MS has also recently detailed new technology that may help make Kinect faster at reading your movements.

Lionhead Studios boss and newly-crowned BAFTA Fellow Peter Molyneux has said he would be happy to offer EA 24 hours of his time to consult on a new entry in the Syndicate franchise.
Molyneux, who produced the Bullfrog Games original back in 1993, told CVG that any attempt by current IP owner EA to revive the brand would have his blessing, but admitted he'd be anxious to stick his oar in.
"Yes, of course. It's a great feeling to see something you've created still have life or meaning. But my first thought is: 'I wish I could just spend a day with them saying what I thought was really special about Syndicate, or another title for that matter.'"
EA hasn't confirmed that it's planning a new Syndicate title but rumours abound that The Darkness dev Starbreeze is working on something.
"They're smart people and I'm sure they'll work it out," he continued. "But it's like a parent watching their kid grow up and do something with their life - you still want to be a little bit involved. There's been a Populous DS. That was okay, it didn't do brilliantly. Again, I wish I had ten minutes with them at the start."
Molyneux added that he personally wasn't interested in remaking any of his old titles.
"I'm actually not a huge fan of remakes, only because I think there's too many other ideas to work on. I don't think as Fable 2 and 3 as being 'sequels'. We change so much stuff - Fable 1 was a corridor-based game, so you can see the progression."

At this time you should be getting your Lizard Units from batch 2, we have made some small changes on the kit contents that we want to comment on.
Changes on the Scorpion 2: We included a plastic case with it, this will help you to do a more safe job and to preserve the probe tip of the unit. Also we have changed the grabbers for a new type "jaw" that allow a stronger and easier connection as now the Grabbers can be placed side by side (check picture bellow). We will update the tutorials to include reference to this new grabbers but meanwhile here you have them for fast reference.
Changes on the Kit: We have removed the minispear from the main kit as the scorpion covers the key read functionallity of all phat liteon drives. The Minispear will be still available as separate item on stores for those who might need them.
