Since Kinect entered the world, modders have been hacking it for everything from playing Tetris tocontrolling a web browser. And really, Microsoft never seemed to mind. In case it wasn't obvious how much the company wants you to help find new uses for the technology, the folks in Redmond have filed a patent application for custom profiles. We can see that having implications for gaming and evenWindows shortcuts, but for now Microsoft expects it to improve Kinect's accuracy by learning how you move -- after all, no one jumps or points or apes Lady Gaga's dance moves in exactly the same fashion, right? In other cases, the system might note that you prefer to make an "X" sign instead of a checkmark when selecting an object onscreen. Andthose personalized settings can roam over a network, shadowing you as you switch devices. Personally, we're stoked about the idea of making our best Julian Assange dance a bona fide gesture, but we'll be happy enough if Kinect can make up for our natural ungainliness.

A few common components come together to make this interactive museum exhibit that teaches about the sun (translated). It uses three main physical components to pull this off. The first is a custom projection surface. It’s a hemisphere of the sun with a slice cut out of it. This is presumably coated with the paint you’d use to turn a wall into a projection surface. Software translates a projected image to map correctly on the topographic surface, resulting in what you see above, with a Kinect for user input.
Take a look at the video embedded after the break to see how the exhibit works. It instructs patrons to stand on a pair of footprint markers on the floor. This positions them at the proper range from a Kinect depth camera, which translates their outline into cursor commands. By moving a hand around they can explore the different parts of the sun.
We’re in love with how easy this type of interaction is becoming. Granted, there’s a fair amount of work that goes into to the coding for the project, but the physical build is quick and relatively inexpensive.

Even if you've never joined the prodigious ranks of the Xbox Live Gold subscribers, or whether you've simply allowed your honorable title to fall by the wayside, you can get a temporary pass to the Gold Zone this weekend. From today through Monday, free users will find their status upgraded, giving them access to the online multiplayer functionality usually reserved for their premium counterparts.
Of course, there's no such thing as a free lunch -- Microsoft is asking that folks participating in the freekend help break an extremely specific Guinness world record using Kinect Sports: "The most people running a virtual 100m dash at one time." That ... that can't be a very large number to beat, can it? Regardless, if you'd like to participate (and grab a free Avatar shirt at the same time), check out the details on Rare's blog.

2012 shooter Prey 2 will on average take 15 hours to play through, developer Human Head has revealed.
But it will take substantially longer to complete the Bethesda-published first-person shooter, which does not feature multiplayer, if you explore the open world and complete side quests.
"We're focused on making it a strong, powerful single-player experience," project lead Chris Reinhart said.
"And we're tied with Bethesda, which has proven they are the masters of making awesome single-player experiences."
He added: "It's an interesting challenge. It makes us change some of the other things we do. The single-player game has to be larger. There's more player choice. There's more to do.
"We're targeting, for the average player, at least around 15 hours to play through. But because there are so many open world activities you can do when you explore around and find different things, it's hard to put an upper cap on it.
"I guess if someone were to haul ass, they might be able to get through it under that. But I could haul ass through many open world games and get through them in a handful of hours."
Human Head's decision to ditch multiplayer for the shooter was a matter of focus, Reinhart said.
And he suggested more developers do the same – rather than compete with the gargantuan online experience offered by the likes of Call of Duty.
"It would be great if more people focused on single-player," Reinhart said.
"I love playing multiplayer. My big thing with that, if you're not going to be able to beat or exceed Call of Duty, don't do that kind of multiplayer, to be perfectly honest.
"If you're going to do multiplayer, do something else that fits with your style of game, and something that's going to be really fun, that's going to get people to play together in this game.
"The other thing is, I would want to make sure developers put their focus in the right place and area. Taking and watering down both single-player and multiplayer is not good for the developer. It's not good for the publisher. It's not good for the game player.
"It's better to focus your energy on one or the other. If there's a focus issue and you need to be able to focus on one, do that."

Rock Band creator Harmonix will have, "at least one bit of significant news at E3" according to a new interview with vice president of product development Greg LoPiccolo.
Speaking to website IndustryGamers, LoPiccolo refused to reveal whether the news involved a new IP or existing brands Rock Band and Dance Central - both of which franchises it still controls after being sold off by previous owners Viacom.
However, LoPiccolo did hint that the announcement will be related to motion control gaming, saying: "we're incredibly creatively motivated by motion gaming."
"I guess one thing that a lot of people don't remember is that we sort of did a little foray back in - I think - 2004 when we did Antigrav for EyeToy, which was really fun to develop and we were really happy with the outcome. We learned a lot about sort of the strengths and challenges of motion gaming even at that point, a lot of which we directly applied to the Dance Central development process," he said.
"I think that we see opportunities in motion gaming that we might be uniquely equipped to pursue and so I think we are broadening our scope a little bit in terms of the studio focus to not only encompass music gaming, but also motion gaming, and that may manifest in a lot of different ways. Right now, we actually we have a number of different teams hard at work on different concepts which has been super entertaining and just a lot of fun to work on brand new IP," he added.
Although Dance Central is currently a Kinect-exclusive, LoPiccolo has not ruled out working with the Wii and PlayStation Move.

Microsoft has restricted the rating of Xbox Live Indie Games via Xbox.com to Gold members in a bid to combat the abuse of the system.
Last month complaints emerged over the way game ratings were handled, with some accused of manipulating the system to boost rankings.
Now, Microsoft has taken action.
"We've heard your feedback and have made some changes to the ratings system on Xbox.com," read a statement on the XNA Game Studio Team Blog.
"Starting today, only users with Xbox Live Gold subscriptions will be allowed to rate content on the Xbox.com website. By implementing this change, we believe our customers will experience more consistent ratings and a significantly reduced potential for abuse across the entire Xbox catalogue.
"We have also investigated rolling back suspect votes, however, we determined it will not be possible to do this."
Microsoft pledged to investigate those who may have "violated" their user agreement. It warned those found guilt may be banned from Xbox Live and see their currently posted games removed.
"We appreciate everyone's patience on this matter and are excited about the fantastic games being posted to Xbox 360 through the Xbox Live Indie Games program."
Microsoft launched its investigation last month after the developer of College Lacrosse: The Video Game encouraged fans to award generous five-star ratings to its game.
But fans took proceedings a step further, dishing out harsh one-star ratings to many other popular Xbox Live Indie Games titles as well.
Fellow XBLIG developer Robert Boyd of Zeboyd Games brought the matter to Microsoft's attention. "I have no idea how this sort of thing could be prevented, but I'm really upset," he said.

Like Sony, Microsoft is moving its Xbox 360 event to a sports arena this year. In this case it's the Galen Center, home of the USC Trojans.
We'll keep you posted with liveblog and other info as the event draws closer. Oh, and don't forget our annual E3 press conference bingo!

Classic PC adventure American McGee's Alice is finally coming to consoles, according to the game's creator.
McGee told CVG that retail copies of its forthcoming multiplatform sequel, Alice: Madness Returns, will include a code to download the original game.
"There's also going to be pretty significant release which is the original Alice brought over to the consoles," explained McGee, "so that a person who's purchased Madness Returns gets a download code and is able to bring Alice 1 onto their console and play through the entire original game alongside playing Madness Returns."
He didn't mention whether it would also be available separately from the sequel or whether it's been updated at all. Publisher EA has declined to comment.
American McGee's Alice was a PC-only release back in 2000, winning 8/10 from Eurogamer. Tom Bramwell went hands-on with its belated sequel last month.
"The world of games has moved on a lot in the past 11 years, and we'll need a little more convincing before we believe Alice has learned enough in the meantime," he wrote.
"In other words, Madness Returns looks promising, but you might want to give it a sanity check closer to its 14th June release."

Gamers take Gears of War 3's graphics "for granted".
That's according to executive producer Rod Fergusson, who told Eurogamer in a new Gears of War 3 interview that developer Epic battles against gamers' memories of Gears 1.
"They take it [Gears of War 3's visuals] for granted," he said. "That was one of our biggest problems with Gears 1 to Gears 2. Your memory is far better than reality.
"With Gears 2 we were competing with the memory of Gears 1 and what people remembered it was like. We got to the point where, at the review event in San Francisco, I suggested we put up a single station of Gears 1 so the press could play it and realise it wasn't as good as they remember. They were saying, "Oh, it kinda looks like Gears 1." I'm like, "Really? No it doesn't at all. You just remember it looking better than it actually does." Not only were we competing with the state of the industry, we were competing with our own memory."
Gears of War launched in 2006 as a visual showcase of high definition home console gaming, wowing fans with its Unreal Engine 3-powered visuals.
Now, five years later, Epic faces stiff competition in the graphics race on the Xbox 360 console.
But, Fergusson explained, it is the continued evolution of Unreal Engine 3 that ensures Gears of War 3 will once again raise the graphics bar when it launches later this year.
"The nice thing is Unreal Engine 3 is always changing. It's the same number, but every day hundreds of code changes go in and the engine improves. We keep pushing our engine team and ourselves art wise to keep taking it up.
"Yeah, people have closed the gap. We were far ahead of a lot of games when Gears 1 came out. Everybody's been catching up, and a lot of people are fighting for ownership of that title. But we continue to push the box and what HD means."
The Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta launches today for those who bought the Bulletstorm Epic Edition.
