UPDATE: Microsoft has told Eurogamer that it's aware of a few incidents of "unauthorised access" and is working with the relevant individuals to remedy the situation.
However, the spokesperson insisted there is no evidence of a wider Xbox Live security issue. Here is its statement in full:
"We do not have any evidence the Xbox Live service has been compromised. We take the security of our service seriously and work on an ongoing basis to improve it against evolving threats.
"However, a limited number of members have contacted us regarding unauthorised access to their accounts by outside individuals. We are working with our impacted members directly to resolve any unauthorised changes to their accounts.
"As always, we highly recommend our members follow the Xbox LIVE Account Security guidance provided at www.xbox.com/security to protect your account."
ORIGINAL STORY:A number of Xbox 360 owners have reported their accounts compromised and credit cards used to buy FIFA-related content.
Reports suggest FIFA Ultimate Team content packs are the target for those who have gained access to accounts.
Eurogamer was first alerted to the issue by reader Speedjack, who on 11th October found his gamertag had been "recovered" to someone else's machine.
"I then find out that I've had 5000 then 500 MS points bought on my credit card. Better yet, all the points including the 120 I had already on my account are gone... all spent on FIFA 12 content packs yesterday afternoon while I was at work.
"Not only that, but my account now has 35 FIFA 12 achievement points on it!!! Never played the game in my life - hate football."
Speedjack spoke to Microsoft support, which suggested there exists an issue with EA's servers that leaves XBL accounts vulnerable.
It is important to note that at this stage there is no evidence to support this claim, and it is unclear exactly how widespread the issue is.
However, Speedjack is not alone in having his XBL account compromised and used to buy FIFA-related items.
A detailed report on the Goosterblog recounts how one user suffered an XBL account hack - also used to buy FIFA Ultimate Team packs.
The report offers a number of explanations, including one specific to FIFA that involves hackers emailing EA support and the EA server then sending over the victim's Xbox and EA account information.
There is also a similar report on forum Facepunch, and multiple users' reports on the Xbox.com forum.
Microsoft support is freezing accounts affected for up to 30 days as it investigates complaints.
EA was unable to comment on the situation when contacted by Eurogamer, but the company did point our readers towards the EA forum, which offers advise on how to protect user accounts.
It contains information on fake emails and copycat websites, phishing, redirects, scare tactics and password integrity.
Microsoft advises any users affected to contact its Xbox support service. Its Account Security page has more information.

Microsoft has closed entry to its new Xbox Live dashboard test program after just one day.
Xbox mouthpiece Major Nelson today revealed that all spaces on the beta have been filled.
"At this time we are no longer accepting registrations for the program as we have reached our target audience volume," Nelson said.
Microsoft will contact successful entrants shortly with details on how to proceed.
Testers are expected to receive the update within the next two weeks.
Scheduled to roll out to all Xbox 360 owners in November, the dashboard refresh brings Microsoft's Metro interface to the device, used in Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8.
It adds full Kinect integration, Bing search tools and an updated Marketplace with a range of apps to download, including BBC, LOVEFiLM, Channel 4, YouTube.

Battlefield 3 will ship with an Online Pass code in the box that will be needed to access the game’s expansive multiplayer features.
The news was confirmed by DICE designer Alan Kertz on Twitter. When pressed on the reasons for the decision, he said that the decision to use the system was “because servers cost money, and used games don't make developers any money”.
Those who buy a pre-owned version of the game will be able to buy an Online Pass for around £8.
Its predecessor, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, included a VIP pass that could be redeemed to access additional content on the game disc that was otherwise locked.
The last high-profile EA release to not include an Online Pass was Portal 2, and before that Crysis 2. But these games were published under the EA Partners label, meaning their developers were free to opt-in or opt-out of the scheme.

After rubbing the sleep out of our eyes this morning and booting up the ol' Xbox 360, we were just as surprised as you were to see a serious looking system update. You know, the kind of system update that requires a special install window after rebooting the console? That one.
As Major Nelson informs us, the update is little more than "general system maintenance," and "no new features" (his emphasis) will pop up after updating. Well, boogie to that! Perhaps in late November, then?

Kinect was named Gadget of the year at this year’s T3 Gadget Awards.
The Xbox 360 motion accessory also took home the Gaming Gadget of the year, in a ceremony that also saw Samung’s Galaxy S II beat the iPhone to the phone of the year prize.
Another gaming winner was the Razer Switchblade, which claimed the Innovation of the Year award. The laptop tech combines a customisable keyboard that changes to suit the game that is being played, with a touch screen and an Intel Atom processor.
The T3 Gadget Awards saw 960,000 votes cast by consumers.

Sledgehammer Games general manager Glen Schofield has said Modern Warfare 3 will be the most accessible Call of Duty game yet.
In part one of an interview with the former Visceral Games boss, he told us multiple gameplay innovations will make Modern Warfare 3 a more approachable title for those new to the series.
"... One of the things we did consciously was to use the levels in multiplayer and put them in Survival mode," he said. "That was to try and create this bridge so that people who do play single player, who are maybe a little intimidated by multiplayer, will sit down with a buddy and play co-op and go 'wow, that's cool. I'm really getting to know this level. I get the upgrade system now, I get it all.' And then they could jump into multiplayer."
Asked if Modern Warfare 3's a more accessible Call of Duty than ever before, Schofield added: "Absolutely. Then if you think about adding Call of Duty Elite to it, if you want to jump into multiplayer after you learn Spec-Ops and just use your friends list to play, then you're given a higher level of comfort.
"It's one of the things we've been hearing: 'I don't want to jump into a game with a bunch of teenagers and get trash talked all the time. I want to actually have fun and get in there.' And a lot of people like that type of gameplay, but we're trying to make it so you can customise it for yourself."
Activision also released two new Modern Warfare 3 screens today, showing off some AC-130 gameplay from a freshly revealed, Paris-based campaign level called Iron Lady.

Microsoft is "targeting" a November 25 launch for its next major Xbox Live update.
The update will introduce a redesigned dashboard, Bing search functionality and new content from media partners including the BBC and Lovefilm.
GigaOM was told of the Black Friday November launch date by sources who claimed the code the new Xbox Live apps will run on is based on a modified version of Microsoft's Silverlight development framework.

Gears of War 3 players have hit the Epic forums in complaint of a major bug discovered with the hit shooter.
Specifically, the game appears to be crashing when players attempt to load up a Horde game with two profiles logged in. More crucially, when the glitch occurs it appears to corrupt one of the profiles making it impossible to enter any game mode with that profile.
Epic has responded to the complaints, forum rep 'Rykard' saying the developer is "aware of the problem" and "working every second toward resolving this issue".
They also posted a small questionnaire to investigate the exact nuances of the bug. Head through the source link below to lend your feedback.
On a more positive note, Gears 3 managed to hold off Dark Souls for the top spot for UK Xbox sales last week.http://www.computerandvideogames.com/321915/gears-of-war-3-crashing-glitch-epic-responds/

The better-late-than-never closed beta for Tribes Ascend will kick off on November 4.
Confirmation came from developer Hi-Rez Studios lead Todd Harris in the interview below, in which he admitted the beta is starting later than planned.
The delay, he explained, is down to the developer wanting to make a "few adjustments" based on feedback from previous Alpha testing, and the decided inclusion of the game's deeper character progression elements.
The Tribes series may not be a big name among the console masses, but PC types will remember the series for its epic online battles and iconic jetpacks and skiing.
In development at Hi-Rez Studios, Ascend is a free-to-play shooter, hitting PC and Xbox Live Arcade early next year.

October 11th, 2011, 01:07 Posted By: wraggster
Don’t expect any official word on the subject until next summer, but details posted on a number of CVs online has reignited talk about the next-generation Xbox console.
Supererogatory dug up the details of four Microsoft employees. One, Jeff Faulkner, says he assumed the role of ‘creative director of Xbox next-gen’ in January this year.
Other mentions on the assorted documents include ‘UI and branding support for next-gen Xbox on all forms of media’ and the prevention of ‘electromagnetic interference in next-gen devices’.
Though there’s been nothing approaching an official word on any next-generation machine bar the Wii U, it is becoming increasingly widely assumed that Microsoft will use E3 2012 as the venue from which it will kick-start the band-wagon on its next iteration in the Xbox series.
What form Xbox 3 could take remains nothing but guesswork for now. It’s safe to assume that the advances made in voice and motion control with Kinect will not be abandoned, but don’t expect the traditional controller to go anywhere either.
Increased networking functionality is an absolute given, with the integration of an OnLive-like streaming service a distinct possibility.
It would be a surprise to see physical media abandoned entirely, but by the same token the notion of having to put a physical disc in a disc tray to play a game is quickly starting to feel somewhat dated.
The one safe assumption is that the actual hardware itself will take an increasingly unimportant role as Microsoft looks to grow Xbox as service, quite possibly across a number of different devices.

Gaijin Games has revealed its latest project, Runner 2: Future Legend Of Rhythm Alien. Headed for XBLA and PSN, Runner 2 is the first sequel to emerge from the Bit Trip series and introduces HD visuals, new abilities for main character Commander Video and more playable characters. The biggest departure for the previously Wii- and 3DS-only rhythm-action platformer, however, is the new art style which abandons the series' 8-bit aesthetic for a more cartoony look hinted at on the game's blog.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced a new slate of Xbox Live partnerships with Verizon, Comcast, and a host of other content providers. Now, the company has unveiled new details about the code upon which these new apps will run. Sources close to the situation tell GigaOM that the new framework, code-named "Lakeview," will be based on Silverlight, but will also bring a few new features from Xbox Kinect, including voice recognition and gesture-based controls. More intriguing, perhaps, are insider claims that Microsoft's new content partners stream video using Apple's HTTP Live Streaming, rather than Redmond's Smooth Streaming. GigaOM's sources went on to say that Microsoft has been introducing major changes to the platform over the past few weeks, in the hopes of having it ready for third-party developers once the Xbox Live update rolls out. Spokespersons for Xbox and Silverlight said they have "nothing to announce" about the new framework, though GigaOM reports that Redmond is aiming to release the update on Black Friday.

The good news for everyone anyone using their Xbox 360 as a AT&T U-verse set-top box, is that it will be upgraded as a part of the new dashboard update coming this fall. that means support for the integrated search, new UI and control via voice or gestures with Kinect. The bad news? After the update, it will only work if you're also a subscriber to Xbox Live Gold. No problem if you were already shelling out in order to get your Gears 3 co-op on, but not so awesome if you weren't planning on buying the gaming package just to watch some TV. Giant Bomb has talked to Microsoft and of the new services, some, like the BBC, may be accessible without a paid-up Gold pass, but for HBO Go, Dailymotion and others you'll need to toss some cash Redmond's way. To ease the pain, AT&T is tossing a one-time $60 credit towards its users with the package -- still no word on whether or not you'll need to pay that installation fee for a new setup after the upgrade goes through.

We have several pieces of information to release today concerning Xbox Live, our USB to ESATA adaptor and the initial Wasabi 360 Ultra firmware release:
We have noticed on several forums that users are debating the potential ban issues of using ODDE devices such as ours and other manufacturer's products on Live. We have refrained from stating that the product in its current state can SAFELY go on Live. This is due to the fact that Live is a dynamic system which can issue bans in waves. This means that your friends' systems or indeed your own system which is installed with ANY brand of ODD emulator may work today, but be banned tomorrow or indeed at any time in the future. There is no fail safe method currently which allows safe play on Live without possibility of a ban. We have noticed many forum members discussing that both Wasabi 360 Ultra and similar products can be used with Live currently. Whilst this is currently true, it is by no means safe to say that these systems will not be banned in the imminent future.
We'd like to state therefore that we feel that it is irresponsible for manufacturers to allow users to believe that it is safe to use the console with any ODD emulator without the risk of an imminent ban. We hope that other manufacturers will be responsible in joining us to say that this is a real risk. After all, furnished with the truth, users are able to decide themselves on a fair and level basis whether or not to risk playing on Live with any ODD emulator.
We'd also like to remind users that our USB to ESATA adapter will start manufacturing soon. This will allow users the maximum amount of convenience to use either an ESATA or a USB HDD. The retail price is US$9.99 or Euro 9.99. The adapter will be available from all Wasabi resellers.
Finally, we have made Wasabi 360 Ultra firmware v1.0 available for download. This comes with a special feature announcement - support for multi disc games. ISO's can be trivially swapped in-game thanks to a feature of the Xbox dashboard which allows you to select arbitrary music tracks to play during the game and thus this feature can be exploited to display the ISO list. Full details may be found in the updated Wasabi 360 Ultra user guide which has been added to the downloads page. Special thanks goes to Zerberus of 360hacks.de for suggesting this method!

* Since each individual xk3y is tested in a Xbox before shipping the current throughput is only about 300 pieces per day, but we are expanding our QC facility and hope to have a throughput of at least 800/day by the end of next week.
Stock was shipped to several suppliers today via express courier and tomorrow more will ship out. We are trying our best to balance out the stock so all who pre-ordered will get some stock.
* Engineers from our team have been hard at work implementing a web interface that allows you to control your xk3y from your iPhone, iPad, or any other device with a browser. Expect this feature in a firmware update in the near future! An API is also in the works, paving way for an Android app and more. (The web interface requires the xk3y WiFi dongle, which will be sold separately)
On another note: Five more Distributors/Resellers where shipped stock today.

Team Xecuter developed the first ever Xbox 360 connectivity kit back in 2006 and although it’s success has been imitated, it has never been bettered. We now present the first of the latest upcoming upgrades to the world famous CK3 product range. We have been giving sneak peaks to our upcoming projects over the last few months in our VIP section of the forums, and we are now ready to release the first of our new Fall 2011 product range.
We present to you the successor to the now discontinued CK3 Pro – the all new Xecuter CK3i.
The last few months have seen many changes to how a 360 DVD Drive is powered and manipulated in order to read/write its DVD key and firmware. So much so that it was time for a complete overhaul of how the CK3 worked and to bring it right up to date in order to be ready for whatever 2011/12 had in store.
Now we have tools such as the CK3 Probe 3, it has become clear that RS232 serial is no longer required to extract the drive key. We have also taken all of the technology that had been built into the CK3-CP and embedded all of that into the new CK3i and thanks to our partnership with Jungle Flasher we have been able to completely embed all of the automated functions so that working with 360 DVD Drives is now easier than ever before.
The layout of the entire circuit has also been completely redesigned using the same high end facility that produces the uber successful X360USB PRO and is now more reliable, safer to use and with even more protections in place to safeguard against any errors.
You will also be happy to know that the Xecuter CK3i is released complete with its slick designed case to give extra protection and to give it a quality design that is not just on the inside but on the outside too.
You don’t have to wait either. In true Apple style and in honor of the late, great Steve Jobs, The Xecuter CK3i is on sale from TODAY at selected stores for only $39.95 ! We have also added a ‘Special Gift’ in a random selection of 1000 of these. Will you be lucky enough to get it
