Terms of the deal aren't being disclosed, but Microsoft announced today that it has acquired the content analytics firm VideoSurf, and it's being crystal clear about where it will be putting it to use: Xbox Live. VideoSurf, for those not familiar, is a company that specializes in computer vision technology, which lets it "tag" individual frames of videos in real time and deliver better search and discovery services. Earlier this year, it released an Android application that basically amounts to Shazam for video. As for its plans for Xbox Live, Microsoft says that it will integrate the technology across the platform "over time," and that it will "augment the Xbox 360 ecosystem and evolve search and discovery of entertainment content on Xbox Live." The official press release is after the break.

Battlefield 3 developer DICE is currently working on a patch for all versions of its just released game, set to improve "polish, stability, weapons balancing, squad control functionality, user interface enhancements, and several feature enhancements that address feedback the community has provided to date." The studio's blog post on the matter also specifically calls out the PC's "negative mouse acceleration" problem as an issue the update will address. It also stands to reason that the tactical light issue and the PS3 digital edition'sBattlelog problem will be fixed, but we asked EA for clarification.
While the patch will arrive on PCs some time "next week" -- the post was published last Friday, so that's this week -- the bulk of the game's community on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 unfortunately won't see the patch until it gets through certification. DICE estimates that will be "shortly after the PC update." Regardless, more patch info and a launch date is promised for this week, when we'll hopefully hear more solid news about the console patch as well.
Update: This post originally stated that the patch was due "next week," though the news from DICE was announced last Friday. We've since updated the post and headline to reflect the accurate launch projection for the PC patch (this week!) and apologize for any inconvenience.

If Hollywood's already keen on dragging you through another origin story with Spider-Man (who?), it can't surprise anyone by proposing a narrative backtrack for the lesser known Lara Croft. The new Tomb Raider film, vaguely positioned for 2013, will return to the posh explorer's formative years, though it might not fall in lockstep with next year's game, which also strips away the Croft cruft to focus on a harsh tale of survival.
Producer Graham King tells ComingSoon.net that the new movie is "something very different" from the ... commercially acceptable Angelina Jolie outings. "Listen, the box office, they weren't disasters but I find it interesting that the story that we're telling is really the story before she became Lara Croft," he says, "so it is a character piece."
And when she does become Lara Croft, we hope it's accompanied by a scene in which she repeatedly, explicitly imparts the correct pronunciation to the audience. Look, it's easy. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Laura Craft: Haberdasher.

If you’ve got a crazy ingenious idea for Microsoft’s Kinect peripheral, but don’t have the means to make your dream a reality, the Kinect Accelerator just might be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
Microsoft, having performed a complete 180-degree turnaround from their initial stance on Kinect hacking, is embracing developers more than ever with this new program. They are offering a $20,000 along with development space to ten startup companies, in hopes of turning out some incredible Kinect applications. At the end of the three month program, each group will have the opportunity to present their creations to a group of angel investors, which is a fantastic opportunity.
Obviously competition to gain entry into the program will be pretty fierce, but if you think you have what it takes, get your application in now. Judging by the Kinect Accelerator FAQ section, this looks to be something geared towards small tech startups rather than individuals, but it never hurts to give it a shot.

This is a little script I built a while back that I had forgot about. It's comes in handy when you include DashLaunch at build time.
It will create the launch.ini needed for Dashlaunch settings. Answer the series of questions and your output is a fully compatible launch.ini!
Enjoy!
Thank you cOz for all your work but, most of all your patience!
Greets Icekiller, Lemmon, Marco, and my brother shtweps!
* v1.0
-Set "launch" .xex paths
-Set config values true/false
-Set plugins path
-There are several "advanced" launch.ini variables that are not included in this version.
-Don't know if I plan on adding them either.

We just had a development meeting with C4E and he dropped a bombshell. Thanks to the recent silent DAE update he has been able to discover how to hit DAE/AP25 with the “Silver Bullet” and has developed iXtreme LT 3.0 which defeats DAE/AP2.5 reliance COMPLETELY.
A new FW and a new version of XBC will be released to get you up and running again in no time.
We can also confirm that C4E has finished the Hitachi LT 2.0 fw (not affected by DAE/AP25) and will be releasing that as soon as its gone through final testing.
Although it’s early stages, c4eva has successfully completed several tests which validate this new method and classified his solution as the “silver bullet” for AP2.5. Rather than using captured challenge results each time the dae.bin changes, the new method builds a complete set of profile data for each disc and works for all AP2.5 challenges, regardless of how the dae.bin is changed. As a result, the format of backup ISOs will be changing as the AP25 replay sector will no longer be included and the profile data will instead take its place. Though c4eva noted that it will take some development time as it’s not a quick fix, both he and the team will now be putting their full efforts behind bringing this solution to life in the form of new versions of iXtreme LT+, Xbox Backup Creator, and abgx360.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be receiving an update patch within a couple of weeks.
Bethesda's PR and marketing boss Pete Hines has confirmed as much via a recent Twitter post. Some of the game's glitches are actually rather funny, others are not much fun at all. But bugs are bugs and they need squishing.
"PS3 & 360 updates have been submitted for certification," confirmed Hines, adding "PC coming too."
There's no firm date on the patch release but Hines estimates it'll arrive on the week after America's Thanksgiving day, which places its release at some point in the week beginning Sunday November 27.

The full Call of Duty Elite experience should be up and running by 1st December, developer Beachhead Studios has promised.Speaking in an interview with G4TV, production VP Daniel Suarez asked for a little more patience from users keen to use the hobbled service."It was our fault that the service wasn't up and running the day [fans] put in their token or the day they bought it," admitted Suarez."They kind of have to bear with us while we bring this all back up, but for us it's literally 'Give us those couple weeks, we're giving those to you for free and come December 1st the goal is that we'll have everything up and running.'"Suarez also offered a little insight into what exactly caused the problems that have seen many users shut out of the service since launch earlier this month."When we ran our beta, [it] was strictly on the PC and a lot of our assumptions were based around [the idea] that a larger majority of users were going to use the PC [interface] since it's a more robust version of the service than the console app. Some of that may have been incorrectly analysed, because we're seeing 80 to 90 per cent of our users coming straight from the console app."So the way we've had to balance out the way that's feeding the community is different. Right now we're retrofitting that so that that works better across the board rather than the way it was set up."He also clarified a statement earlier this week, suggesting the PC hub may never see the light of day. Turns out that was a little wide of the mark."It was a mistake," explained Suarez. "Our goal is to get something on the PC. We haven't set timing yet, but our goal is to do that."Apparently the main area of concern with the PC version is how to keep cheaters and hackers at bay."On the PC, that's an open platform [which is] more prone to cheats and hacks. We're trying to prevent them as much as possible, but that platform isn't as secure."As we're doing competitions and more things specific to stats and generating those stats and creating leaderboards for people, we don't want to create a situation where the service itself becomes invalidated by people having crazy stats because they've been able to do something to the game."Activision has announced that all premium subscribers will have 30 days access added to their accounts free-of-charge as a goodwill gesture for the teething problems.

Wanna turn your Kinect hack into, um, money? Microsoft can help you out, now that it's teamed up with TechStars to launch the Kinect Accelerator -- a program designed to turn Kinect-based ideas into real world startups. To participate, innovators must first apply to the Accelerator before the January 25th deadline. Ten applicants will then be accepted to a three-month incubation program, and rewarded with $20,000 in seed money. To participate, however, you'd have to relocate to Seattle for the duration of the program, scheduled to kick off this Spring. Plus, if you manage to bring your company to market, you'll have to set aside a six percent common stock stake for TechStars, which is both funding and spearheading the initiative. For more details on how to apply, hit up the source link below.

November 19th, 2011, 00:20 Posted By: wraggster
Arriving on PlayStation 2 just weeks after the terrorist attack on New York’s World Trade Center, public sensitivity could have scuppered the commercial chances of one of history’s greatest games.
Fortunately the quality of Rockstar’s epic shone through and the game went on to spearhead a phenomenon that remains one of the most important in modern gaming.
But what’s the truth behind the significance that the events of 9/11 had on the final stages of the game’s development?
“We made some changes after 9/11 but they were very cosmetic. Most of the delay in releasing the game, which was only a couple of weeks, was a product of the fact that our office in New York was pretty close to Ground Zero and so any work that had to be done there was made impossible for a period,” the series’ co-creator Dan Houser told this month’s Edge magazine.
“As far as I recall, we changed the colour of the cop cars so they weren’t identical to NYPD, we altered the flight path of a plane so that it didn’t look like it was flying into or behind a skyscraper, and we removed one mission as it made a reference to terrorists, plus a few lines of pedestrian dialogue and a line or two of talk radio.
“Some people believe we removed an entire strand of missions because they found some reference in the code to a character called Darkel, but he had been cut months before [release] and the missions were never completed.”
And although he doesn’t directly confess it, Houser hinted that the team considered scrapping plans to release GTA III altogether.
“The mood in the office… well, we were close to Ground Zero and lived in New York but, as people who didn’t work in financial services, we didn’t know too many people directly affected,” he admitted.
“It was very upsetting, very unnerving and overwhelming – perhaps particularly as people who work in the media: to see a moment seemingly designed by its architects to be consumed by the media. It was the same for us as it was for anybody.
“But we also felt we’d come this close to making this great game and that despite these problems, just as despite the problems of Take-Two, it was our duty to finish it.”

If rhythm is a dancer, then My Keepon is a goth. The adorable, Snowman-like (yellow snow, in this case) bot just recently received a wallet-friendly retail debut, so join us in the not-surprised-to-see-this-get-a-Kinect-hack (by way of Arduino) camp. Granted, the lil' guy's moves may be stilted, but he's clearly not the star of this YouTube show. We were more impressed with his gesture-cuing Gepetto's discothequeliving room get down. So, do you think you can dance to industrial music and mod this $35 holiday hot toy? Then clearly you need to hit up the source for all the necessary coding bits. But first, be sure to take a gander at the industrial grind after the break.

A new World War II shooter Enemy Front will hit shelves next year, publisher City Interactive has announced.
It’s City’s first game from veteran games designer Stuart Black since he joined earlier this year after leaving Codemasters. The FPS will be developed for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC using Crytek’s CryEngine 3 engine.
City Interactive has seen success with similar products in the past. Its Sniper: Ghost Warrior game was one of the surprise hits of last year, breaking into the GfK Chart-Track Top 10 during its first week on sale and selling over 1m units to date. A sequel is due early next year.
Enemy Front tells the tale of a soldier dropped behind Nazi lines. Players will fight in several World War II battles from France to Berlin.
A statement from City Interactive read: “Enemy Front utilises CryEngine 3, a state-of-the-art engine that guarantees a stunning level of visual detail and a truly immersive game world.
“Stuart Black brings an extensive understanding and creative approach to the genre, heralding one of the most ambitious and gritty WWII action titles of 2012.”
Black has worked on games such as Black and Bodycount in the past.

Iron Brigade, known outside Europe as Trenched, will be released on Xbox Live Arcade on November 30.
The European release of Double Fine's mech tower defence game was held up due to a trademark dispute, with a Portuguese designer claiming that, under the name Trenched, the game would violate his trademark for a war-themed board game called Trench.
A post on Double Fine's website, apparently from studio head Tim Schafer, reads: "Sorry, but we had to wait for this whole Greek debt thing to get resolved. Also, Brad [Muir, project lead] was really upset about the state of Italian politics, and vowed he wouldn't release his game in Europe until Silvio Berlusconi stepped down. You can understand his feelings, I'm sure."
When Iron Brigade launches, a title update will be pushed out that changes the game's name worldwide - a necessary evil to ensure multiplayer compatibility between territories. A new survival mode, and extra loot, will also be released for free with a DLC pack, Rise Of The Martian Bear, to be released in the months to come.
"Now we want children of the world to gather together, hold hands, and say 'Iron Brigade' over and over and over again until they can't even remember what it was called any more," Schafer writes. "And then we want them to shoot Tubes together while sharing information about their disparate cultures."
Earler this week Muir said the game was "really close" to clearing Microsoft's infamous certification process, but said the number of departments the game had to be approved by following the trademark dispute was "pretty ridiculous...Xbox Live is a very complex machine."

Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has grossed $775 million in five days, breaking the $650 million record set by previous CoD title Black Ops.
According to Activision, the game was the best-selling title of all time at the top five retailers in North America, and it set online records on Xbox Live with 3.3 million unique users on November 8.
Life-to-date sales for the entire Call of Duty series have exceeded $6 billon worldwide.
"With $775 million of sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in its first five days, Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for three consecutive years across all forms of entertainment," commented Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.
Microsoft said that more than 7 million multiplayer hours were logged on Xbox Live on launch day.
"As I have said all year, we have been singluarly focused on making a spectacular game for our fans, and nothing else. Our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have done just that," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.
"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 continues to thrill core gaming enthusiasts as well as draw new people into the medium, which is not an easy balancing act. But it takes more than a great game. I would also like to thank our incredible team for the pulling off the launch of the year, as well as our retail partners around the world. But most of all, I want to thank our fans. They are our toughest critics, and our biggest supporters, and none of this would be possible without them."

Go get the salt... it's Xbox rumor time! Today, we're hearing that Microsoft's Xbox 360 successor may be hitting stores in late 2012, according to Edge, with an initial announcement possibly to come at CES. Next December would be a couple years shy of the 10-year time frame Microsoft reps have quoted for the 360's life cycle in the past, and we haven't heard much about this rumored CES announcement until now, so we're not inclined to take either of these reports too seriously. Ubisoft may have Microsoft-supplied dev kits, according to Edge, so perhaps there is some truth to the rumors. We don't have long to wait until that massive consumer electronics gathering in Vegas at this point, though, so it's only a matter of time before the rumor mills begin shifting their launch expectations to 2013.

Multiple users have reported running into disc read errors while attempting to play the Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 3.
In a forum thread on Xbox.com that spans 14 pages, a number of gamers have complained of consoles either failing to recognise and boot up the title, or an "unable to read from disk" message popping up at various stages during gameplay. Some of them have continued to encounter the same problem when trying their copies of the game on multiple systems, suggesting the issue lies with individual discs rather than consoles.
"If the game doesn't work on multiple consoles, it points to an issue with the disc, and I'd recommend you replace it," was one piece of advice offered by Microsoft support staff.
Individual users have also reported experiencing the disc read error with multiple copies of the game tried on a single console.
We've reached out to Activision for comment and will update this story if we hear back.
