Microsoft's community man Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb has reconfirmed that a total of 57 million Xbox 360 units have been sold worldwide since it's release in 2005.
Posting via Twitter this weekend, Hryb said: "Just saw a new sales figure that I though you would like: Xbox 360 has sold more than 57 million units worldwide."
Sony last week announced 56 million sales for PS3 worldwide, shrink the once considerable gap to just a million sales.
PS3 launched almost exactly a year after Xbox 360 and 16 months later in Europe.

Managed to get hold of a copy of Modern Warfare 3 early? Then Microsoft is urging you to think twice before putting the disc in your Xbox 360.
The warning, which has become fairly standard nowadays, comes from Xbox Live’s director of policy and enforcement Stephen Tolouse.
Responding to questions on Twitter by those who have already got hold of their copy (many of which came via a mistake at retailer K-Mart), Toulouse stated: “If your copy is legit and obtained legitly, have fun. It's a great game.”
However, this Tweet was followed some hours later by the following: “Double-checked with Activision. Mw3 pre-release play not authorized. So please be patient. Playing early may impact your account!”
Panicking? MCV has a reassuring message – don’t worry.
Early selling is a pain and publishers will understandably try and put both retailers and consumers off. But in our experience we’re yet to meet anyone who has been banned from XBL for playing a genuine copy of a game early. And those who say they were banned are probably pirates.

It's only been a few months, but already the Kinect for Windows SDK beta is moving from stage uno to stage dos. (That's one and two, vaqueros.) Microsoft's outing it in commemoration of the Kinect's one-year anniversary, and it's also launching a Kinect for Windows site and blog, too. We're told that the Kinect for Windows commercial program is still on track for an early 2012 launch, and to date, some 200 companies have agreed to take part in the pilot program. Ask for the beta 2 piece, the refreshed build includes "faster skeletal tracking, a better accuracy rate when it comes to skeletal tracking and joint recognition, and the ability to plug and unplug your Kinect without losing work / productivity." Hit the source links to get your download on, but be warned -- we've seen it off and on throughout the day.

Ridge Racer Unbounded will race to UK retailers on March 2nd 2012 and North America a few days later.
The Namco Bandai driving game for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC is the latest in the long-running Ridge Racer series, which first hit arcades and the PlayStation in the early ‘90s.
Unbounded adds destructible cars and environments and combines them with the franchise’s arcade-style handling and drifting mechanics. The game features a host of single-player and multiplayer modes as well as an in-game track creator.
“Ridge Racer Unbounded brings the high-octane racing that the series is known for and injects new layers of destruction and carnage to the already intense formula,” said Namco Bandai’s VP of marketing, sales and publishing Olivier Comte.
“With the new sophisticated City Creator, fans can easily create an unlimited number of tracks and share them with their friends for limitless replay value.”
Unbounded will arrive in EMEA and Australasia on March 2nd and North America on March 6th next year.

An early copy of Modern Warfare 3 for Xbox 360 was yesterday sold for an eye-watering $1,725 on auction site eBay.
It is believed that the game is one of few that were accidentally sold early by US retailer Kmart.
In total the game received a staggering 88 bids. And with the buyer promising Priority USPS mailing, it’s likely the auction winner is already playing their game.
A quick look on the UK arm of eBay shows that some copies of the game are already available. Indeed, this auction could see the winner with the game as early as tomorrow for £79.99.

Sean Murray, head of Joe Danger developer Hello Games says that the revisiting the game in order to bring it to XBLA was a cathartic process, meaning the team was able to iron out the kinks and make the game better.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz in an interview to be published next week, Murray said that stats and data collected from watching hundreds of thousands of PS3 players enjoy the game had helped the team to polish a game which they felt was released to PSN "because we'd run out of money."
"We loved the game, the original Joe Danger," Murray explained. "But we'd released it just because we kind of ran out of money, we didn't really feel like it was finished. I don't think most teams would feel this way, but we actually jumped at the chance to revisit it and fix everything that was wrong.
"It's been a really cathartic process, to go back. We've watched all these hundreds of thousands of PS3 players ply through now, we've gathered stats and things like that. It kind of eats you up, the problems that you know you left there, the things you know you left unfinished."
Previously, Murray had attracted attention for referring to XBLA as a "slaughterhouse" for smaller developers during a talk at Develop in Brighton last year.
His change of tack wasn't hugely motivated by profits, he says, but good business played its part.
"We jumped at the chance without even thinking about the economics of it, " Murray claims.
"XBLA is obviously a very large market, I think it makes business sense for us. I hope that players respond to it. I think we do what we've always done before, which is to make the best game we can and hope that everything else falls into place."

You can go ahead and cancel that intricate, Ocean's Eleven-style Gamestop heist you've been planning -- we've discovered a sure-fire way to get your hands on Modern Warfare 3 before its release. Just roll on up to your nearest (participating) Walmart at 8 p.m. on November 7, and you'll get to participate in a Modern Warfare 3 tournament, the winner of which will get a free copy of the game. The losers? They'll probably get those Walmart smiley face stickers. It's win-win!
Sure, that just gives you four hours with the game before you can play it indefinitely in the comfort of your own gaming cave. Still, have you played competitive Call of Duty at launch before? Four hours of extra insight is enough to turn the tide of any given match. Like the Joes say, knowing is half the battle, and the other half is having ninja-like reflexes and an unending pool of tolerance for having slurs hurled at you by sixth graders.

The new Alan Wake game to be revealed at the Spike VGAs will be for Xbox Live Arcade. This was first noted as a correction in a tweet by Game Informer news editor Jim Reilly, who clarified that it's a downloadable game, and "not Alan Wake 2." The announcement was confirmed on the Alan Wake Facebook page, which also asks "Are you ready to become the Champion of Light?" We'll see the first screenshot on GI's website on Monday.
These details are in keeping with reports we've received in the past. In May, Remedy head of development Oskari Häkkinen told Joystiq that a new Alan Wake project was in progress, but was not Alan Wake 2, and "neither will it be DLC." That report also offered a fall release window, which is seeming unlikely at this point. Later that same month, a rumor popped up outing the next game as "Alan Wake's Night Springs" for XBLA.

Guildford studio Hello Games' 2010 PlayStation Network title Joe Danger is headed to XBLA.
The game, a PSN exclusive that was one of the first games to receive backing from Sony's Pub Fund, will be released under the name Joe Danger Special Edition, as a Korean ratings board listing recently revealed.
Hello Games MD Sean Murray told us: "It's kind of the ultimate version of the original, with lots of extras. It’s been really nice to go back to, and tinker, and hopefully make it perfect.
"It was well received at the time, but there was so much about that game I wasn't happy with, and it's been lovely to go back and fix it all bit by bit."
The bulk of the new content is found in The Laboratory, a set of developer missions that add some ten to 15 hours of new content. We'll publish an extensive interview with Murray on the site tomorrow.

A interesting take on the birth of the Xbox from Technology Review: 'When the original Xbox video-game console went on sale in 2001, it wasn't clear why Microsoft, known for staid workplace software, was branching out into fast-paced action games. But Microsoft decided that capitalizing on the popularity of gaming could help the company position itself for the coming wave of home digital entertainment. "Microsoft saw the writing on the wall," says David Dennis, a spokesman for Xbox. "It wanted to have a beachhead in the living room." ... Now Microsoft is linking Xbox 360, its most successful consumer-focused brand, with others that have not been as well received. It is integrating Bing, its search engine, into Xbox and Xbox Live to enable people to search for multimedia content. By the end of the year, Microsoft is expected to unveil an updated Xbox Live design that is more in line with the look of Windows phones and the forthcoming Windows 8.

Though THQ originally assigned a January date to UFC Undisputed 3, it went on to defy the name and dispute that ship date. During an investor call, CEO Brian Farrell revealed the new release date: February 14. It's a day for togetherness, after all, even if said togetherness involves a sleeper hold in the middle of an octagonal arena.
Earlier today, THQ sent out media for "PRIDE Mode," featuring a roster of fighters from the PRIDE Fighting Championships, presumably battling over whose self-assuredness is most justified.

Microsoft has teamed up with GAME to allow fans to play Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary weeks before its November 15th release date.
One event will take place on November 4th at Gamestation's Birmingham New Street store, while a second will kick off on November 12th in GAME's Kingston Upon Thames outlet. Both will run from 7pm to 10.30pm.
Attendees will be able to play Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary to win prizes including a limited edition Halo Xbox 360 console, Kinect, an Xbox 360 Bluetooth Headset, 10,000 MS Points, an Xbox Live Gold subscription and a copy of the game. T-shirts and remote control cars are also up for grabs.
On top of this, a deal between Pizza Hut and Microsoft will see a special Halo Anniversary pizza available to order online from November 7th to December 19th.
“What better way to celebrate ten years of the most beloved gaming franchise of all time than by inviting loyal Halo fans to come and play Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary before it officially releases," said director of Xbox and Entertainment Stephen McGill.
"Thanks to the support from GAME and Pizza Hut, UK fans can anticipate a truly unique experience as they’ve come to expect from a Halo game launch.”
Neil Ashurst, head of communications at GAME and Gamestation added: “I’m delighted that GAME and Gamestation have been chosen to host these special gameplay events, giving customers an early opportunity to play Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary."
Customers who pre-order Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary through GAME will also receive a 24-page Halo art booklet, while stocks last.

November 3rd, 2011, 00:37 Posted By: wraggster
Market research company Newzoo has made the bold prediction that Grand Theft Auto V will be released as a digital-only product.
The prediction comes just hours ahead of the official debut trailer which is due for release at 16:00GMT today.
"There are a lot of reasons why publishers are pushing towards digital distribution of triple-A games,” Newzoo’s report states. “Speaking out loud might harm the relationship with retail partners, but the benefits have become too large to remain silent about the desire to go completely digital.
“The ultimate objective being to launch games faster, create continuous revenues on a title and simply to make more money. Will retail disappear from the picture? Of course not. Retail will always remain an important channel to promote and distribute games. Retail has a strong hand to play when it comes to eyeballs and… boxes make a nice gift.
“Boxed games will not disappear, but what is in the box will. That is why the boxed GTA Vversion will contain a collectible piece of merchandise and a download code. No disc."
Though MCV doesn’t believe Newzoo is correct, the outside chance of a digital-only release was alluded to on this site last week.
However, on the presumption that GTA V will be released for the current generation of machines it’s almost impossible to believe that Rockstar would choose to alienate such a large proportion of its potential target audience by adopting the strategy.
Not only do a high percentage of console owners have a small capacity HDD (or in the case of some Xbox 360 owners, no hard drive at all), but internet infrastructure would make the downloading of such a vast game – likely to be 8GB at the very, very least – a very unsavoury proposition for many.

Microsoft is currently shipping a Kinect sensor bundle for the holidays, which includes three games for $150. The included games for North America – though they "may vary by region" – are Kinect Adventures, Fruit Ninja Kinectand The Gunstringer, from Microsoft's newly acquired studio Twisted Pixel. Considering the $40 Gunstringer retail box contains a free Fruit Ninja Kinect, it might be easier to think about this bundle providing a $40 savings.
Microsoft has been playing it close to the chest regarding Kinect sales this year, recently reiterating that the device had sold 10 million units, a statistic it already promoted in March. We'll get another update after this year's bundle-boosted holiday sales have been tallied.

Gears of War 3's first major piece of DLC, "Horde Command Pack," has been temporarily delayed. Epic Games made the announcement on its forums, blaming a "technical issue" for the last-minute postponement.
"We have folks working around the clock to resolve this issue ASAP so you can all play and enjoy the Command Pack," Epic noted. "The Epic Games Community team will stick around and keep you posted with any further information."
Epic informs us that the current delay will not affect the launch plans for the second piece of DLC, "RAAM's Shadow," already scheduled for December.

Update: Less than a day, good on Epic. The "Horde Command Pack" is available now.
