Assassin's Creed 3 may be the fifth core entry in the series in just six years, but it seems even fans calling for the franchise to take a break have been won round by the upcoming title's new direction.
With a fresh hero and a new setting, Ubisoft's US arm said today that AC3 is on track to become the most pre-ordered game in the publisher's history. After only three weeks of being available for pre-order in the US, AC3 pre-orders are higher than any previous AC game in the same time period, and more than ten times greater than they were for last year's AC Revelations in the same timeframe.
Ubisoft senior VP of sales and marketing Tony Key said: "On October 30th players will experience the biggest game launch in Ubisoft's history with the highly anticipated release of Assassins Creed III.
"With a development cycle of three years, Assassins Creed III is the true next-generation experience of the Assassins Creed brand. The production value of the game, combined with the biggest marketing commitment we've ever made, will make Assassins Creed III the highest-selling Assassin's Creed game ever.
"Additionally, the new setting and hero makes this the perfect time to jump into the series for anyone that has not previously played an Assassin's Creed game."
Earlier this week we published our first Assassin's Creed 3 preview, as well as a pair of video interviews with creative director Alex Hutchinson and senior producer Francois Pelland.

Xbox Live users now spend more time streaming media than gaming, according to study
Xbox Live users are spending more time streaming video and music than they are playing games.
According to Kotaku, Microsoft has released a report showing the average user spends 85 hours a month on Xbox Live, with 42-45 of those spent on streaming media.
Xbox Live usage is up by thirty per cent, and today the long awaited HBO Go, MLB.tv, and Comcast's Xfinity TV services were launched, giving yet more incentives for Xbox Live Gold memberships.
Though many (including HBO) worry that services like Hulu will bring traditional television down, most of the Xbox streaming apps require subscriptions of their own.
This includes the three new apps, with HBO Go requiring both traditional cable and HBO subscriptions.

[h=2]Xbox 360 used more for video and music apps than for gaming[/h]by Jessica Conditt (12 minutes ago)
10
More than half of the time people spend on Xbox Live is devoted to watching videos and listening to music, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi told the Los Angeles Times. "What we're seeing is that people are turning on the Xbox to play games and then keeping it on afterwards to get other types of entertainment," Mehdi said.
The Xbox 360 isn't a gaming console; it's now officially an entertainment center that includes games, and it's becoming more popular with this angle. Today households spend an average of 84 hours a month playing games and using other apps on Xbox Live, up 30 percent from a year prior. To compare, the average household watches 150 hours of TV each month.
Even before Kinect, a tool that has always made more sense as an entertainment control rather than a gaming one, Microsoft has wanted the Xbox 360 to be "the heart of connected digital entertainment," as HBO senior vice president of consumer technology Otto Berkes put it.
Today Microsoft added MLB.TV, HBO GO and Comcast Xfinity TV apps to its lineup, which already includes Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, Zune, Last.fm and others.

Entertainment app usage on Xbox Live has more than doubled year-over-year
In its quest to dominate the living room, Microsoft has continually upgraded its Xbox Live entertainment offerings, and the effort is clearly paying off, as today the company noted that Xbox 360 is being used more for entertainment than pure gaming.
Alongside the launch of the new Comcast and HBO Go TV apps, Microsoft released some new figures, specifically citing that Xbox Live Gold members are spending an average of 84 hours a month on the service, with entertainment apps doubling in usage.
No hard statistics were provided specifically on time spent with non-gaming apps, but Microsoft says that the combined time spent watching TV, listening to music and watching movies was the contributing metric.
This represents the first time the console has primarily been used for music, movies and other forms of entertainment, rather than continual online gaming sessions. In total, there has been a 30 percent year-over-year increase in usage on Xbox Live globally.
Even though BioWare released a major title in March, the whole of gaming has seen a drastic slowdown, causing major UK retailer GAME to go into administration. Perhaps gamers are watching more videos on Xbox Live instead of gaming during these harsh economic times.

March 27th, 2012, 23:37 Posted By: wraggster
Established Xbox rumour-monger ‘MS Nerd’ has claimed Microsoft will reveal a new Xbox Lite console at E3 in June.
The device, he says, will be similar in design to Apple TV, containing an ARM-based architecture and retailing for something in the region of £100.
It will focus on Xbox’s networked features such as streaming video and social networks and also work with the newer version of Kinect that has to date only been confirmed for PC.
"At some point after [the Xbox Lite], we'll see a Xbox Next, a true successor to the 360," he claims. "Details about it are very hazy, except that, like the 360, it will do games for core-audiences and the same media apps as the other device, also with Kinect."
Indeed, could this be the disc-less Xbox that MCV was tipped off about earlier this month?
MS Nerd adds that a true successor to Xbox 360 will follow the launch in 2013.
The validity of these claims is entirely up for question, of course – we won’t have any definitive answers until the weeks running up to E3 at the earliest.
While the thirst for next-gen machines continues, it does appear that there has been a change of strategy at Microsoft.
MCV revealed in January that both Microsoft and Sony were intending to reveal new hardware at E3 this year. At the time Microsoft’s position was the usual “we don’t comment on rumour and speculation”.
This stance, however, has changed, with Microsoft now highlighting the virtues of Xbox 360 and emphasising its long life ahead in response to any rumours of a new machine.
Indeed, the platform holder has even come out and outright denied that a new machine announcement is imminent.
And the truth of it is that Sony’s strategy is being dictated by Microsoft’s decision. The platform holder is determined to not allow a new Xbox the same head start on the market that Xbox 360 had over PS4.
It would, however, be more than happy to keep developing PS4 for another year – and Microsoft’s apparent decision to put back its Xbox 720 plans gives it licence to do so.

March 27th, 2012, 23:33 Posted By: wraggster
Have you noticed that the number of annualised franchises in games is actually shrinking?
As the mid-tier of boxed games essentially vanishes off of High Street shelves and top publishers knuckle down solely on triple-A, retailers have been banking on fewer hits to see them through.
A total decrease in the number of games released means there are less iterated sports games and other sequels on the market.
In that environment, retailers love nothing more than knowing what actually is coming out – so thank heavens for Assassin’s Creed III, which was locked in for a October 31st launch two weeks ago.
Three by name, but actually fifth in nature, this new game continues a success story that started back in 2007. You know that backstory already. It was a new IP that wowed many and sold well – its sequels ACII, Brotherhood and Revelations built and built on that.
38m copies sold later, and Ubisoft reckons that Assassin’s Creed III has the potential to go even further.
RISE?OF?AN?ASSASSIN
“We knew we had something special when we first launched the Assassin’s Creed franchise back in 2007,” says Rob Cooper, Ubisoft’s MD for Northern Europe and Export territories.
Hindsight’s all well and good, but he’s not wrong here – AC has been almost defiant of the games industry’s march towards modernised mass-market action fare by offering intricate storylines amidst historical action. Most games start with a disclaimer about violence – Assassin’s Creed has a disclaimer about how its development team has a mix of staff from many faiths and upbringings, so potentially contentious was its take on the Holy Wars. Cooper describes that package as having “always offered an interesting alternative to the other action games on the market”, and it’s a fair point.
If Call of Duty (which also had its real breakthrough during the same Christmas as Assassin’s Creed with Modern Warfare) is the mindless Michael Bay blockbuster made flesh in video games, then Assassin’s Creed is the Spielberg epic – just as commercial, but much more thoughtful and artistic.
But the competition is shaping up this Christmas already, with the yearly staples and Creed contemporaries FIFA, Call of Duty and Medal of Honor in the mix, plus returning series such as Resident Evil and BioShock. Can Assassin’s Creed hold its own against them?
“Absolutely. This is a huge investment for us,” explains Cooper. “We are in pole position to compete against the other titles that will come to market this Christmas. We’re extremely excited about this launch and very confident the game will perform well.
“Assassin’s Creed III is the biggest and most ambitious launch in Ubisoft’s history so we absolutely believe this game can and will continue to grow the franchise.
“When I saw this game for the first time, I was blown away by both the sheer beauty of it and the technical excellence. This is a real step forward for what is already a critically and commercially successful brand.”
THE?MARCH?OF?PROGRESS
So what kind of step forward are we talking here?
Assassin’s Creed III has a new setting, new lead character and new storyline. After three years set in Renaissance Italy, the eight (yes, eight) development teams working on the project have jumped forward to the American Revolution.
The game has also been developed using a brand new engine that promises more expressive characters and improved AI. It has been in a three-year development cycle separate from the iterative production arc that brought ACII, Brotherhood and Revelations to market, and it has twice the production capacity of any other Ubisoft game.
So that’s quite a fair bit of progress, then.
Cooper elaborates: “Gamers can look forward to a new setting, a new protagonist and an entirely new storyline.
“We’ve enjoyed watching the growing speculation about where this game would be set and it’s good to be able to confirm where the game will take place now. In the previous games, Ezio’s story was powerful and engaging and grew Assassin’s Creed into one of Ubisoft’s biggest and most successful franchises, but it’s time to close that chapter now and take Assassin’s Creed in a completely new direction.”
One thing Ubisoft has never been afraid to remind the world about is how, despite selling millions of units from day one, the franchise’s first instalment wasn’t perfect – something it remedied in sequel Assassin’s Creed II and then
refined from that game’s two follow-up spin-offs.
“We have spoken openly in the past about the work we have done on the franchise to continually improve the offering for our consumers. In fact, a lot of the work we did was based on feedback we were receiving directly from gamers,” says Cooper.
“Assassin’s Creed III will not only continue this legacy but will provide players with an entirely new gaming experience.”
EXPANDING?THE?CREED
This is not a baby/bath water scenario, though, and some things won’t change so suddenly.
As well as being a retail hit, AC has been a successful digital business for Ubisoft too, selling both multiplayer and single-player add-ons for its games since ACII. That won’t change for ACIII – although Ubisoft isn’t going to give away all its secrets straight away.
“I think it’s fair to say that all major game releases are now supported by a DLC programme after launch and Assassin’s Creed III will be no different,” says Cooper.
But he says the bigger story is that the franchise is “expanding far beyond DLC alone”.
The firm says its transmedia projects supporting Assassin’s Creed specifically have “been really successful”, especially in the UK.
Along with a range of iOS and Facebook apps launched over recent years, Ubisoft has published official novelisations of its games through book publisher Penguin in the UK. Those novels have sold over a million units to date “with almost half of those sales coming from the UK market alone,” according to Cooper.
A book of Assassin’s Creed III is also in the offing to help expand the backstory and retell the overarching narrative of the new game, too – just one of many ways Ubisoft is hopping the push the brand further.
“You’re going to hear a lot of Assassin’s noise in the coming months,” jokes Cooper.
Certainly, the noise has already started. Just this week Ubisoft hosted a large-scale premiere of ACIII, at a London cinema showing with industry party.
As we say, retailers and the media love knowing what’s games actually are coming out this year, and Ubisoft knows it too.
Says Cooper: “We can’t wait to start showing our media and retail partners more on the game so everyone can see why we’re so excited here about what we have coming up.”

Rumors of a new Xbox have been swirling for quite some time now, though they are now taking a slightly different shape. The next Xbox hardware won't actually be a generational leap, according to anonymous blogger MS Nerd, posting on Reddit. Instead, the console will actually be a stripped down version of the current Xbox, which will concentrate on "Arcade-style games" and Kinect apps. This is apparently the same ARM-powered console that MS Nerd firstdiscussed in November of last year. The device will be "price-competitive" with Apple TV and is apparently slated for a late 2013 launch.
Meanwhile, the "true successor" will launch sometime after with the same media apps and support for more core game experiences. Furthermore, the next generation of Kinect will supposedly launch sometime around 2015. At this point, keeping track of the next Xbox is becoming something of a chore, with estimates for a new launch ranging from late this year all the way out to 2014. For Microsoft's part, the company says there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at this year's E3.

A 7.1.1 update to the Windows Phone SDK has just hit Microsoft's servers today with tools tailored forTango's lowered memory support in tow. According to the company's Windows Phone Developer Blog, this refresh "doesn't add much in the way of new features to [the] WPSDK," mostly addressing emulation for 256MB handsets, compatibility for Windows 8, a patch for Visual Studio, bug fixes for the Advertising SDK, additional language support and an ability for IntelliSense to switch between RAM configurations. It's a hefty 300MB download, since the package accommodates both OS images (512MB and 256MB), and should take about 15 minutes for a complete install. Consider yourself part of the mobile dev pack? Then hit up the source below to get a head start creating those Metro-style apps.

Microsoft recently confirmed that it's not going to be talking at all about its next Xbox, codenamed Durango, at this year's E3, instead keeping the focus on Xbox 360. Forbes columnist Chris Morris explains that Microsoft likely doesn't have games to show for the system yet — and why should they take the focus off Xbox 360, which currently has a lot of momentum? Ultimately, though, the decision not to show the next system 'could have a ripple effect on the rest of the industry,' he says. And by pushing Durango's unveiling back a year, 'Microsoft could find itself going head to head with Sony in a battle of features, even if the machines don't hit shelves at the same time.'"The latest rumor is that an ARM-based Xbox 'lite' is planned for 2013, with a true successor to the 360 coming some time after that.

Swizzy released a new version of his GUI for xeBuild and Diskswap Configurator 2.0!
What's new/fixed (Xebuild GUI v2.04):
- Fixed: Now properly using new xell-reloaded, my mind apparently lied to me and said i had swapped the files in the perm directory, but i apparently only did it in the temporary directory, sorry!
- Added: The app can now also identify CB 1940 as Xenon and will ask you if you want to use CB 7375 for ECC creation
- Updated: Using nitram's new fixed script (previous one didn't like using external CB 7375 nor did it like using CB 1940 it also has CB 6750 problem fixed, so if you have a 6751 CB it'll now be able to build ECC's for that again!)
- Fixed: Error messages are no longer written in the middle of the normal output, it's written at the end like it should be (from python)
- Updated: You can now also build Glitch type freeboot images for xenon
** NOTE: This will use CB 1940, if you want to use a different CB version you'll have to manually edit the glitch.ini with both new version to use AND the CRC value, aswell as add the new CB file... **
- Changed: Changed the label of GGBoot/Glitchboot, it's now more obvious for Glitch type users that this is the option they will want to use, it now says "GGBoot (Freeboot for glitch)"
- Added: I can now extract SMC_config on my own (Thanks to RF1911 and cOz)
- Removed: The debug window no longer exists... if you need to check the KV/SMC data in HEX use a hex editor!
- Added: Several more easter eggs, go find them!
- Fixed: Forgot to add function to the flash nand button! WOOPS! it now works the way it should (NOTE: this will erase the first 50 blocks then write if the total size is more then 50 blocks)
- Fixed: Several bugs/errors in the nandpro operations window
- Added: You can now make presets for the nandpro operations window, meaning if you don't like my defaults you can set your own (it'll autoload "nandpro.xml" if it exists in the main directory)
- Added: NANDPro operations is now linked to the rest of the app, so everything you do here will be effecing the result aswell, for example, when you build a ECC or BIN
- Changed: Rebuilt NANDPro operations, default settings (which are no longer visuable in the main window) is set to use USB as device and nandpro 3.0a for nandpro version (unless you've put nandpro.xml in the main directory)
- Changed: Nandpro operations is now available to everyone (it is no longer restricted to advanced mode)
- Added: IP Scanner, this feature allows you to scan for your console on your network, useful if you can't see your IP or is just lazy... it only checks a range which is user specified (default is 10 - 100)
- Changed: The nandpro operations window has been rearranged a little, and i've removed some controls and placed them on the settings screen only (those that aren't commonly changed)
- Changed: FUSE.txt is no longer downloaded to Main application directory, instead it's downloaded to a temporary directory and copied to the same directory as your source nand is located in (if it's specified, otherwise it'll ONLY be in the temporary directory: files\temp\ beware that this folder is REMOVED upon completing the build process)
** NOTE: I haven't been able to test everything with Xenon's yet, but it should work just fine, i've tested building images but haven't been able to test the resulting images to make sure that it works properly... **
* Diskswap Configurator v2.0
This little app will help you in generating a fully operational
configuration file for Disk Swapper 1.1 by aiding you with how it
should be formatted and such
What's new/fixed:
- Changed: The app now only requires .net Framework 2.0
- Changed: I've re-written the whole app from scratch to make it better and easier to work with
- Added: Buttons to add devices for each textbox
- Removed: xextool is no longer included nor required for the app to be able to fetch Title ID from a XEX file
- Removed: Game name is no longer a part of the app, if you need to identify your games later by adding a label or something, do so manually by writing something like: ;Gamename
- Changed: The whole app has been re-designed, it no longer has multipile windows for each part, it is now slimmed down to a single working window, the only extra window is the help information

just a quick note for those of you contemplating picking up the new "Casper" White Xbox 360 Special Edition 4GB Kinect Family Bundle and wondering what motherboard revision and drive it has inside. Although we had an inkling of hope that, being 4GB models, they might come with older Trinity boards, it came as no surprise that they in fact contain a Corona board and the Lite-On DG-16D5S 1175 drive. Also worth mentioning is that the packaging has changed compared to older bundles insofar as there no longer being a flap/window to reveal the serial number.
With the team's current progress, it won't be long until you'll be able to fw flash and/or RGH these.
Details of the unit we received are as follows:

We are proud to announce the launch of the latest Lizard add-on "Lizard Booster"; this will help speed up some operations on the Lizard unit like Slim KEY Read. For those who want to check the speed please view the video posted some time ago from the .
We have posted also a small Installation Guide (thanks to squallen and vgcrepairs), you can get it from the Downloads page. The device require to be installed inside the Lizard. It does not require wiring (full quicksolder pads). We encourage you to read the Install Guide and all the warnings before attempting to install.
In order to use the features of the add-on you will need run the latest Gecko firmware 1.30 or above. At this time the only difference among units having the booster and those who does not have it is the speed but we might in the future incorporate features that might require the booster.

When you first enter the outskirts of the Boston area, you may feel a certain sensation. Relax, that's not another Highlander in the vicinity, it's your body knowing that something special is about to happen. You're about to attend an awesome gaming convention and possibly come hang with your pals at Joystiq!
Today, we're glad to report the show will be even better: Capybara Games will have a playable build of Super T.I.M.E. Force at its booth, the developer hasrevealed. Super T.I.M.E. Force is an IGF 2012 entry and won the XBLA prize this year, meaning we'll see it arrive on Xbox Live Arcade eventually.
Capy will be situated at booth #764, so stop by if you want to play. You may have to push us out of the way, though -- fair warning and all of that.

We're still waiting for the Comcast Xfinity TV app to appear on our Xbox 360 dashboards, but word is its beta tests have expanded to cover more Microsoft and Comcast employees, and it could launch as soon as the next week or so. In case you're wonder exactly what its capabilities will be when it will arrives, a post over at AVSForum points out a support page that's already live and details both the requirements for service and content available. Customers that have Xbox Live Gold and both internet and video services from Comcast will be able to log into the app with their ID and view video on-demand (no live TV) including free videos, national broadcasters and premium channels. That includes access to HBO Go (which will already have an app) and additional content from Max Go, as well as other premium stations -- basically the same lineup currently available on the Xfinity website. Also notable is confirmation that the cross-provider content search Microsoft is so proud of will apply here, and that any video viewed through the app won't count against those 250GB data caps Comcast has in place. Hit the link below for all the answers currently available, we'll wait until its actually launched to try out the promised Kinect voice and gesture control features.
