Games will not arrive on Xbox Live on the day they hit retail shelves any time soon, says Microsoft.
The computer giant has not been influenced by Sony’s push to launch titles on its online PSN platform the same day they arrive in stores in boxed form. Many PS3 titles – such as Mass Effect 3 – are released like this, while all Vita retail titles are available to download.
Instead, Microsoft will continue to release its Games on Demand titles around six months after they hit shelves.
“It comes down to choice,” Xbox Live’s UK product manager Pav Bhardwaj told MCV.
“The customer has the choice of going to retail on day one if they really want to buy a particular title, or to wait a couple of months and buy it full price from the Xbox Live marketplace.
“It’s a successful part of our business, we’re very pleased with the growth and it continues to do really well. Clearly there’s an audience out there who are happy to purchase a product at full ERP six or so months after [its retail release].”
When asked if Microsoft would follow Sony’s lead and release new games at retail and in download form on day one, the platform holder emphasised the importance of retail.
“We don’t do Games on Demand on day one, we focus on boxed retail for day one,” added Bhardwaj.
“That’s where our focus has always been and will remain that way for the foreseeable future.
“We release a game roughly six months after it arrives at retail at full ERP. That’s our model and we’ll be sticking to that.
“It’s a successful model, so why change something you don’t need to?”

Microsoft's Xbox 360 motion sensor Kinect, and its Windows SDK, has been named the winner of the Design Museum's Digital Award.
The award was presented at a ceremony at the Design Museum in London on Tuesday night, with Kinect selected ahead of the likes of the BBC's website, UK newspaper The Guardian's iPad edition, and Homeplus Tesco's virtual store in Seoul, South Korea.
Paul Almond, UK head of PR for Xbox and entertainment, said: "This is the most prestigious award that could be given to any product in the UK from a design point of view, and is a credit to the vision of the development team behind Kinect for Xbox 360 and the Kinect SDK."
Microsoft's record-breaking peripheral - Guinness World Records named it the fastest-selling consumer electronics device of all timeafter it sold eight million units in its first 60 days on sale - was released for Xbox 360 in November 2010. The Windows SDK was released last June in response to the device being hacked for use with PCs within days of its launch.
The coveted Design Of The Year award went to Barber Osberby's London 2012 Olympic torch.

Sources have indicated that the Xbox will be getting a Spotify-like music service soon
Anonymous sources have told the Verge that Microsoft will be showing off a new Xbox music service during E3 2012. The new music service is code-named Woodstock and will be replacing the near-dead Zune brand.
Woodstock will reportedly be available on Xbox 360, Windows 8, Android, iOS, and web browsers. The service is said to integrate with Facebook, letting users build group playlists with friends. It will also feature an iTunes Match-like option, allowing consumers to scan their existing music collections into the service.
While Woodstock is reportedly being shown off at E3 2012, the service is not expected to launch until this Fall, when Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are released. Existing Zune pass subscribers may have some way to migrate to the new service when it launches.
Will this fare any better than Microsoft's Zune did?

Imports of Xbox 360 hardware to the US could be blocked following a legal victory for Motorola.
The BBC reports that a US International Trade Commission judge has ruled in favour of the firm, ruling that Microsoft has infringed four patents owned by Motorola Mobility relating to video compression and Wi-Fi connectivity.
A full review of the case will be held in August and should that also go against Microsoft the company could theoretically be forced to halt Xbox 360 imports to the US.
Microsoft has previously confessed that should it agree to all of Motorola’s demands it would face an annual bill of £2.5bn – a figure its rival disputes.
A Microsoft spokesperson added: "We remain confident the commission will ultimately rule in Microsoft's favour."

Call of Duty Elite still needs to win over the customers it ‘pissed off’ last November, Activision says.
The online service for the hit FPS IP was bombarded with traffic when it went live alongside Modern Warfare 3 last year, and subsequently failed to work.
It took almost a month to get the service up and running again. Now Activision’s eager to win back the early adopters. Members will now receive 24 pieces of DLC rather than 20. Developer Beachhead has also been updating the service with new content.
“We still have to prove ourselves,” Activision product director Noah Heller told MCV.
“There’s a lot of people we pissed off all the way back to November, and we have to show them we are not going to let that happen again. But we have started fulfilling our promises and people are starting to get it is real value for money.”

An expanded range of TV-like advertisements are set to appear on Xbox Live in the near future.
Microsoft has revealed plans to increase the number of ads shown when users boot up Xbox 360 apps such as Last.fm and ESPN. Many will now include a 15-30 second video when initially loaded.
Such spots were first introduced in last year’s dashboard update and since then app usage has doubled on the platform.
Ad spend on Xbox Live has increased by 142 per cent since 2010.
The move ties into the company’s larger intentions of turning its once ‘games console’ into a viable living room ‘multimedia hub’ – a strategy it has so far executed with ruthless efficiency.

Anonymous sources claim to have seen 'playable build' of secret game
Further indications have pointed to a TimeSplitters 4 project underway at the studio which built its reputation on the popular FPS series.
Alleged “trusted anonymous sources” have revealed to Official Xbox Magazine a playable build of the project, though the magazine claims in its latest issue there is “no guarantee” that the game will progress and be published.
The first three TimeSplitters games were built at Nottingham studio Free Radical Design, which in 2008 was rescued by Crytek after entering administration.
Now rebranded Crytek UK, the studio initially focused much of work on Crysis 2, and today has allocated resources to the THQ game Homefront 2.
However, due to the size of the studio and gap between projects, it appears likely that another game – such as TimeSplitters 4 – could have been worked on.

An ITC ruling has found that the Xbox 360 infringes on four patents owned by Motorola. According to The Verge, some of the patents deal with the H.264 video codec, which is the subject of other legal proceedings between Microsoft and Motorola – with Motorola demanding 2.25% of the final price for any Microsoft product using the standard.
Bloomberg reports that the other two are about Wi-Fi tech, and that a fifth contentious patent was about communication between the Xbox and accessories. One of the Wi-Fi patents was not infringed, and one unspecified claim regarding one of the video patents was "invalid," judge David Shaw ruled.
In other proceedings related to this issue, Microsoft is seeking to force Motorola to license its "standard" patents on more "fair and reasonable terms." This preliminary ruling would seem to be a blow towards Micro

The companies join MSNBC, TMZ, and UFC, among others
Microsoft has announced that it is adding several new partners to its Xbox Live advertising roster. Companies like CBS Interactive, Last.fm, Manga Entertainment and MUZU.TV will run 15- and 30-second spots across the Xbox Live Run of TV Apps to Xbox Live's nearly 40 million active global members.
The younger male demographics are increasingly spending time experiencing entertainment on multiple screens, with Xbox Live subscribers in the US spending an average of 84 hours a month on the service; more than half of that time being spent is using entertainment apps rather than online multiplayer gaming. Microsoft notes that advertising spending on Xbox Live has increased by 142 percent since 2010.

Activision could be preparing to shock the Call of Duty world with a surprise announcement next week – a near-future setting for the title currently known as Black Ops 2.
The hint comes from tongue-in-cheek YouTube show FPS Russian. The latest episode demos a quadrotor RC attack drone that bears more than a little resemblance to a quadrotor pictured in one of Activision’s Call of Duty teaser pics yesterday.
“Technology in this baby isn’t going to be out there for at least another decade,” the presenter is keen to press. “This is truly a weapon of the future.”
He adds: “If you can’t wait 10-15 years my sources tell me that this beauty might be in the next Call of Duty game.”
And the real kicker – the video signs off with the following message: “A big thank you to the makers of Call of Duty for sponsoring this video.”
Just in case you’re wondering – yes, the footage in the video is fake. Take a look for yourself:

German developer Crytek has said that it is focused on delivering DirectX 11 level graphics on Xbox 360 and PS3 for its upcoming release Crysis 3.
DirectX 11 is a graphical standard currently reserved for high-end PC games, although the studio is convinced it can get Crysis 3 running on consoles at a similar standard to the DX11 PC build.
"We want to make sure as much as is humanly possible can translate from a DX11 variant into a DX9 variant, that will work almost as good on an Xbox console to whatever extent we can, because we don't want the experience to be different between the platforms," Crytek’s director of creative development Rasmus Højengaard told Eurogamer.
"It is very, very difficult, but it is possible. It just requires a lot of effort.
“Some of the stuff these guys are making work on consoles now is absolutely amazing. It's render features that shouldn't theoretically work on consoles, but they've managed to construct code that can emulate a similar thing from a… hack and slash sounds wrong, but they don't have the same streamlined pipeline you would have with a DX11 structure, but they can get to a similar result just by experimenting and using tips and tricks."
However, while the studio already has previously DX11-only features such as parallax occlusion mapping up and running on console, it will scale back its ambitions if it fears that performance will take too big a hit.
Added Højengaard: “What it all boils down to is to what extent they're able to use this without choking the console."

Deep Silver has announced a delay for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of their pirate RPG Risen 2.
Console owners will have to wait until July31st in US/Canada and August 3rd in Europe for the semi-open world title. The title was originally to arrive this week for the two consoles as well as PC.
To make up for the release date adjustment, Deep Silver is rolling in an extra episode entitled “The Air Temple” on both delayed platforms. The sub-plot packs several additional hours of gameplay according to the developer.
The company added the PC version is still on target for its April 27th release, having already gone into production.

The Professor behind the study that led to Metro’s sensational“Xbox paedophile predators” last week has stated that the paper misinterpreted its findings.
Furthermore, professor of criminology and director of research in criminology and co-director of the centre for abuse and trauma studies at Kingston University Julia Davidson has asked that the paper run a correction.
It has so far refused to do so, despite the urges from what Davidson describes as a “displeased” Microsoft.
"The focus of the study was not online gaming," she toldEurogamer. "It was just very unfortunate that the Metro misunderstood some of the central findings.
"Anywhere where kids hang out in large numbers on the internet provides the opportunity for offenders to search for them, and that includes social networking sites, chat rooms, peer-to-peer networks.
"There was some evidence around PlayStation and Xbox, but very little to be honest with you. It was referred to in one or two interviews. But if you read the Metro article you'll see it's muddled.
“We put our data out in good faith and have no control over how it's interpreted. Sometimes you get sensible coverage and sometimes you get coverage that's frankly not very sensible."

CallofDuty.com has gone live with a countdown pointing to a “World Reveal” on May 1st.
This, of course, will be the first official details of the next Call of Duty game, due out more likely than not this November.
All we know for certain is that the world-first glimpse of the game will take place during the US basketball playoffs on cable channel TNT.
Beyond that the incredibly fuzzy image seen on the website seems to depict a figure similar to if not the same as the fellow who graced the cover of Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Black Ops 2 has been the safe bet for some time now. MCV doesn’t know for sure whether that will be the name of the game or not, but can reveal one thing – there’s a big surprise in this news.
We’d love to tell you more but we genuinely fear we’d be killed.

Microsoft's sister Windows Phone devices to outshine its flagship console?
Mobile gaming has come a long way since the days of 90s sensation 'Snake' and chip maker Nvidia claims smartphone games will soon provide better graphics than the Xbox 360, according toCnet.
Mobile games have become increasingly important as consumers look to purchase devices based on their entertainment functionality, rather than their ability to make simple calls and texts.
A fine example of this trend is the new iPad which comes with a Retina display HD screen, while more OEMs are introducing quad-core chips to their mobile devices for enhanced graphics.
Nvidia also highlights that these chips are putting mobile devices on par with the likes of gaming portables such as the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

A llsting on Microsoft's job site reveals that it's looking develop Skype products for the Xbox. The company has kept pretty quiet on its plans for integrating its Skypepurchase into its various hardware pockets. While a beta for Windows Phone continues to tick along, this is the first salient sign that Skype and Xbox are looking to team-up. According to the listing: "As a member of the Skype Xbox Engineering Team in London, you will have a strong technical background developing client and/or embedded software." On top of those recent vacancies for browser-based Skype engineers, it's no stretch to see Skype bringing its telephony skills and heavily integrating them into Xbox Live, also giving the internet phone group a huge inroad to people's living rooms. However, the job ad doesn't clarify whether the result will be a simple stand-alone Skype client or something with a little more spice. We'll have to wait for some successful applicants.

This wiring nightmare lets [H. Smeitink] map all the buttons from an Xbox 360 controller to his PC. It gives him the ability to push control input from his PC to the console. But it goes a step further than that because it actually acts as a pass-through device. He connected a wired controller to the computer and uses a program he wrote to translate those inputs and send them to the hacked controller.
The software is written in C#. It’s got a recording function that lets him save the keypress data from the wired controller while it’s sent to the Xbox in real time. When he finds a combination that he uses frequently he plucks out those commands, sets them up as a macro, and assigns one of the buttons to execute it. The controller hack uses one transistor for each button, and a PIC 18F4550 which controls them and provides USB connectivity with the PC.
This isn’t one nice package like some integrated rapid-fire and macro solutions we’ve seen. But it certainly opens up a lot more possibilities. See for yourself in the clip after the break.
