'I'm not the biggest fan of having to do it, but it is one of the unfortunate realities'
On-disc downloadable content is an ugly truth of the games industry, says Cliff Bleszinksi.
Speaking to GameSpot, the Gears of War creator said that whilst he was not a big fan of the process, some of the extra content has to be put on disc due to potential compatibility issues.
"When you're making a game, and you're getting into a ship cycle, there's often three or four months where the game is basically done. And you have an idle team that needs to be working on things," he said.
"And often for compatibility issues, day one, some of that content does need to be on-disc. It's an ugly truth of the gaming industry. I'm not the biggest fan of having to do it, but it is one of the unfortunate realities."
Bleszinksi’s comments come after it was revealed that Capcom had shipped Street Fighter X Tekken with locked content, which included 12 new characters, that could only be accessed after the content was purchased as DLC.

So we tend to forget, the FSD team we refresh the memory with this new announcement.
JQE the FSD team informs us that his team is still working on their new Xbox Experience Real, the new dashboard alternative to dedicated consoles XBOX 360 and JTAG Glitch. This new system is different from Free Style Dash, even if it uses the same database, the code needs to be rewritten almost entirely, so the project come soon. With the use of the last SDK, the interface has been revised with the support of Kinect, the http server and client are also available to day. The covers of the games will be used by default 3D jqe360.com from the site and not the marketplace. The team continues to work away from the lights and now devotes himself to the launch of content (games, homebrew etc ...) which remains the part not yet completed this project, this is why the team did not deliver beta project. The FSD team says they are also working on integrating the private messaging function and why no voice chat / video via the famous XBSlink or xlinkkai. The message is simple, but no ETA ensures that the RXE will be up. Thanks to the green-to information. Official site: www.teamfsd.com

Got both an Xbox LIVE Gold membership and a Netflix account? Well, you'll be treated to a slightlyrevamped steaming video app on your 360 today. The tweaks are nothing ground-breaking, but they'll certainly deliver some welcome changes. New navigation options allow you to skip around movies much quicker during playback and even jump immediately to the next episode of a show. If you're one of those folks that's still rockin' a 4:3 screen you can use zoom to transform your letterbox video into a fullscreen clip. There's also a new single sign on feature for easily accessing your Netflix account across multiple consoles and improved contrast to make movies more vivid. Go fire up Netflix on your Xbox 360 to get the update now.

Way back in the long, long ago of January 2011, a trademark on the US Patent and Trademark office website surfaced for Gears of War: Exile. Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski has revealed that the studio was working on it, but it has since been canned.
"Let's just bury the hatchet now," he told Gamespot here at PAX East. "Gears of War: Exile was an unannounced game that I can't give any details about that has since been cancelled." Outside of the existence of the trademark, there really isn't any other information.
Some have speculated Gears of War: Exile was to be a Kinect title, an on-rails experience, but without any further information from Epic, it looks like we're left to speculate on what could've been.

Like the last several major Grand Theft Auto franchise entries, Grand Theft Auto V is being developed by Rockstar's Edinburgh, Scotland-based Rockstar North studio. Character animator Alex O'Dwyer is an employee at Rockstar North, according to both his LinkedIn page and his CV, and he seems to think that Grand Theft Auto V will launch this October.
As seen in the image above, O'Dwyer's CV puts GTA V's launch window firmly in the holiday season – not exactly a bizarre concept considering Rockstar's history of launching GTA titles during the holidays (with the exception of Grand Theft Auto IV, that is). It would also put sufficient time between Rockstar's May launch of Max Payne 3, but would totally buck the trend of Rockstar releasing more than one title in any given year. It's worth noting that Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, may not be keen on launching GTA V in the same month as BioShock Infinite.
Regardless, we've reached out to Rockstar and O'Dwyer for comment, but, well ... it's Easter. Hopefully we'll hear something soon. For now, we're putting this squarely in the "rumor" column.

Fans will not be disappointed by the new Amazing Spider-Man game, Activision says.
The firm admits Spidey titles have had a chequered history, so has made sure this year’s movie tie-in got a full two-year development cycle.
Traditionally, Spider-Man games based on films have been the more successful titles. And this year’s edition acts as a sequel to the summer blockbuster.
“We’ve had some hits and misses but this is the best Spidey game yet,” says the game’s producer Doug Heder. “Development wasn’t rushed – we had the full two years to work on this. And we brought back what fans have been asking for.”
The game hits shelves on June 26th, one week ahead of the film which airs in cinemas on July 3rd.
“It’s a chance to take advantage of that excitement that happens at the time of the film release,” says Heder. “We want to leverage that attention the movie season offers us.”

Xbox hopes Kinect Star Wars will become a Wii-style evergreen seller.
Creative director for Kinect Kudo Tsunoda said the power of the Star Wars brand means that, unlike most releases, the game’s sales will not deteriorate rapidly after launch.
“Star Wars really is one of those evergreen brands,” Tsunoda told MCV. “No matter when or where people are buying Kinect, this is the sort of the product that has legs.
“And unlike normal sales curves, this is the kind of experience that can continue to sell at a good pace for months and years to come.
“There are so many parts to the Star Wars franchise now, whether it’s the original movies, the prequels, or the Clone Wars cartoon. We’ve tried to build a video game that fans are going to love, no matter where they came into the universe.”

BioWare has confirmed that it is to release a free piece of DLC called Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut.
It is designed to “expand upon the events” seen at the end of the game, addressing the concerns of some Mass Effect fans who felt the game’s current ending left too many unanswered questions.
“Extended Cut will give fans seeking further clarity to the ending of Mass Effect 3 deeper insights into how their personal journey concludes,” the release states. Extended Cut will be released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
"We are all incredibly proud of Mass Effect 3 and the work done by Casey Hudson and team," BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka stated. "Since launch, we have had time to listen to the feedback from our most passionate fans and we are responding.
“With the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team's artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the Mass Effect universe."
Mass Effect’s executive producer Casey Hudson added: "We have reprioritised our post-launch development efforts to provide the fans who want more closure with even more context and clarity to the ending of the game, in a way that will feel more personalised for each player."
Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will be released in the summer.

More footage from the canned Star Wars: Battlefront 3 game once in development at TimeSplitters creator Free Radical Design has been uncovered. The freshly uncovered video clip is taken from an early Xbox 360 build of the game, said Past To Present, earlier even than the previous video evidence of Free Radical's efforts: a shaky YouTube clip posted online three years ago, soon after the project (and then the studio itself) collapsed. The video reveals early gameplay footage and a glimpse at what the full game would offer via the title's extensive menus. Modes included Story Campaign, Training, Galactic Conquest, Instant Action, Challenges, Freeplay and Jedi Arena. The game's story was to begin with a prologue set on Tatooine, Luke Skywalker's dusty backgarden, before moving on to Coruscant, Cato Nemoidia, Dantooine, Desolation Station, Yavin IV, Hoth and Endor.Later levels were set to feature Cloud City, Dathomir (from the Clone Wars cartoon), Mustafar, and Wookie homeworld Kashyyyk. Some maps were designed to allow "at least" 32 players.Interestingly, the video shows off Free Radical Design's planned planet-to-space technology, which allowed players to seamlessly transition from ground-based fighting to shooting Star Destroyers in orbit. An ex-Free Radical employee stated after the game's cancellation that this tech was "dying with us", explaining that the next version of the game (headed up by UK developer Rebellion) was being rebuilt from the ground up, the ground-to-space transition instead replaced by a cut-scene.LucasArts reportedly pulled the plug on Free Radical Design's work after two years of development (it's worth noting that the leaked footage is from a build long before that point), a decision which immediately preceded the studio's bankruptcy, closure and subsequent buy-out by Crytek. After Rebellion's replacement Battlefront 3 project never saw release, development was then shunted to SOCOM developer Slant Six, before reportedly finding another home at Legendary: The Box developer Spark. Evidence of Slant Six's work was this week discovered hiding on Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City's disc.http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...age-discovered

Most of us have been faced with the anguish of being shot in the head repeatedly by 12-year-olds. There are also the times when we’re overjoyed by defeating the Mother Brain and making it out of the caverns of Zebes. If we wanted to scientifically quantify how happy, sad, or angry we are while playing video games, we wouldn’t know what to do. [Dale] came up with a very interesting way to gauge someone’s state of mind while either playing Xbox, or watching TV.
To get a measure of how happy or sad he is, [Dale] put a webcam underneath his TV and pointed it towards his couch. Every 15 seconds or so, the webcam snaps a picture and sends if off to the face.com API. After face.com sends a blob of JSON containing information about all the faces detected in the photo, a short Python script plots it on a graph.
[Dale] admits he’s not entirely scientific with this project; the low resolution of the webcam, coupled with images being captured every 15 seconds means he runs into the limitations of his hardware very quickly. Also, there’s the confound of [Dale] paying attention to something else in the room – like his kids – rather than the TV. Still, it’s an interesting use of hardware and software that would be loved by a market researcher or QA designer.

Microsoft has laid out its cinema, TV and radio campaign for its new kids game – Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure.
The 360 title is being backed by cinema ads that will reach 1.3m people, plus there’ll be postcards in foyers.
Further activity has been booked on TV channels, with competitions placed in kids magazines. That’s on top of radio and online promotions.
“This is a compelling and highly recognisable IP – no other game contains multiple worlds of the Pixar universe,” the game’s product manager Laura Disney told MCV. “Also, there are few competitive titles in the children’s space on Kinect.”
The game lets players become a unique Pixar character and take part in adventures across five different worlds, which include Toy Story, Cars, Ratatouille, The Incredibles and Up.
Kinect Rush is out now.

We've seen Microsoft's diverse little Xbox motion controller go on to do a heck of a lot more than the company ever indeed, but up to now, it hasn't really done much to capture the majesty that is the human tongue. Thankfully, a team of researchers at the University of Electro-Communications in Japan are working to right that wrong, developing a system that can detect tongue movements, using the relative positions of a user's eyes and nose. The feature has been demoed with an Asteroids-like shooting game -- stick out your tongue to fire and move it left or right to adjust your aim. The whole thing has some practical applications beyond just making people looking goofy on video -- scientists see it as a way to train the tongue for folks with speech and swallowing disorders, one that doesn't require an unhygienic tongue attachment. Don't worry, you don't have to attach anything to your mouth to watch the video after the break, either.

Terminal Reality duels with the Kinect's shortcomings. Can the Star Wars license save the day?
Cast your mind back to E3 2010. Microsoft unveiled 'Project Natal', the full-body motion-sensing peripheral that promised to do nothing less than revolutionise the way we play games. The standard bearer for that promise was Lionhead's ultimately doomed Milo & Kate, but lurking somewhere in the back was a deeply unimpressive demo of a new Star Wars game. It looked bland, both visually and in terms of gameplay; What's more, it seemed to be running independently from the person frantically waving his arms on-stage.
Two years later and very little has changed. Kinect is still widely regarded as unfulfilled potential, we're still waiting for the game that will give us a taste of what Milo & Kate promised, and Kinect Star Wars is everything that E3 demo indicated and a whole lot more - or less, depending on which review you read.
VentureBeat's Dean Takahashi can see the good in Terminal Reality's labour of commercial necessity, as indicated by his 7 out of 10 score. However, while a 7 implies a good game - a solid recommendation - Takahashi's text seems to be describing a very different experience. Star Wars Kinect is energetic, intuitive and sporadically fun, but it's bad points vastly outweigh the good.
Inaccurate controls, poor storytelling, dull enemies, hollow characters, stilted dialogue, poor animations; the gang's all here. Commendable score notwithstanding, Takahashi is open and direct in articulating his disappointment.
"Like many other fans in the galaxy, I was willing to overlook little problems," he says. "After all, I grew up with Star Wars, and I share the common fantasy of one day becoming a Jedi Master. Unfortunately, Kinect Star Wars wasn't worth the wait.
