Microsoft's relatively pricey Xbox 360 Games on Demand titles are performing strongly, according to the platform holder.Xbox Live UK product manager Pav Bhardwaj told MCV the wider online service is experiencing "good growth" in the UK, with Games on Demand playing its part.
"It really is a successful part of our business, we're very pleased with the growth of Games on Demand and it continues to do really well," he said. "People are buying the games at full price and downloading them all too."
Last year Microsoft defended the pricing of Games on Demand titles, which often launch at around £49.99, by reasoning that the service is designed to provide convenience to consumers.
Bhardwaj said sales of Arcade games and DLC are on the rise too. "We don't have any particular numbers as such, but we've seen good growth with the Arcade titles, and the game add-on business is in growth as well.
"We're really pleased with how it's going. We're bringing new titles out constantly. We brought out a number of titles a few weeks ago, and now we have Trials Evolution, Minecraft, Bloodforge and Fable Heroes. It's a new set of amazing IP and some amazing games."
The four games mentioned above form Microsoft's Arcade Next promotion, which kicked off earlier this week with the launch of Trials.

Yesterday's launch of Trials Evolution proved too much for Microsoft's servers as 100,000 players posted times on the game's leaderboards.
Players of RedLynx's long-awaited follow-up to Trials HD were met with long loading screens as the XBLA game attempted to bring up times for each track, and then repeated failure notices. Ghost replays were also absent. As a result, Microsoft has quickly had to increase available server space.
"The stress on the leaderboard servers became extremely severe late last evening," RedLynx told us in a statement.
"For a while, the leaderboards were in read-only mode, then couldn't be read at all. Microsoft worked quickly to deploy more hardware and the situation seems to have stabilised.
Microsoft is now preparing for any more surges in activity that might occur over the next couple of days as more players join the fray, so hopefully no more faultless gold runs will go to waste.
"We apologise for the inconvenience," RedLynx's statement continues, "and obviously we're working closely with Microsoft's backend team to improve the situation and prevent this sort of thing from happening again."
You can read our review of Trials Evolution here. And if you'd like to delve a little deeper, our Making Of Trials HD article explores the creation of one of XBLA's best-selling games.

Microsoft entertainment and devices division sales down 16%
Despite fifteen straight months at the top of the console charts, Microsoft's latest sales figures show the division behind Xbox posted a quarterly loss of $260 million.
According to Gamespot, the figures show a quarterly sales figure of $1.62 billion for the entertainment and devices division; a 16 per cent drop from last year.
The company blamed the loss on a "soft gaming console market."
Microsoft's gaming group, by comparison, is up on its sales for the fiscal year, climbing from $7.4 to $7.8 billion over the same period.
With reports the new Xbox console will be revealed sometime this year, the 360's sales have declined by 48 percent year-on-year.

Microsoft and 343 Industries announced this morning that Halo 4 will launch worldwide on Tuesday, November 6. The news comes one day after teasy tweets from Microsoft's Major Nelson indicated some form of collaboration between Microsoft and everyone's favorite freakishly tall late night host, Conan O'Brien, which sparked rumors of a potential launch date reveal.
Microsoft studios corporate VP Phil Spencer offered lofty goals alongside the launch date announce. "With Halo 4 leading the charge, we're confident 2012 will be the most successful year in Xbox history," Spencer said. He also pointed out that Halo 4 is just the beginning of Microsoft's renewed relationship with the Chief. "We are beginning a new saga with Halo 4 and embarking on a journey that will encompass the next decade of Halo games and experiences." Just no more cat helmets, Phil. That's all we ask.
Additionally, Halo 4 will appear in some form on tonight's episode of "Conan," which Microsoft described as nothing more than a "special segment."
Update: Red vs Blue created the charming short above to announce Halo 4's release date. Enjoy!

Spectacular. Truly spectacular. And the picture of the first-gen Xbox Metro has used really rounds it off.
Today’s copy of freesheet newspaper Metro takes alarmist mainstream video gaming reporting to a WHOLE new level.
Check this headline: “Xbox paedophile predators 'move in on prey within two minutes of contact”.
We think that deserves a round of applause, people.
“Paedophiles prowling online move in on their prey within two minutes of first making contact because they have so many potential victims to choose from,” it continues.
We’re laughing. At our desks, we’re laughing. Are we supposed to be laughing?
“Sexual predators are taking advantage of young people’s willingness to add strangers as online contacts out of a sense of ‘competition’ over their popularity.
They are also increasingly likely to use gaming platforms such as Xbox Live to target children, researchers say.
“Many are spending up to six hours a day on online ‘fishing expeditions’ where they work though up to 200 contacts until they find a vulnerable child willing to interact with them. “
Actually, we’ve figured it out. Metro has obviously used the technology behind the holographic Tupac to resurrect Mary Whitehouse, then given her an Xbox 360, pen, paper, 15 cans of Redbull and told her to LET RIP.
“Conversation between an online offender and a child can now become sexualised within two minutes,” researcher Professor Julia Davidson said. “On social networking sites, if the child does not respond, the offender will simply move on to the next child.
“During our interviews, offenders said they didn’t need to bother with a grooming process when they could immediately ask children for sex or to meet so they could abuse them.”
Don’t forget too that this is on the front page. The front page of the paper. Such is the threat posed by these tireless kiddy fiddlers that Metro has prioritised its grave warning over anything else that has happened in the world. Glorious.

Paid-for Xbox Live games and content are enjoying “good growth” in the UK year-on-year, says Microsoft.
In an interview with MCV, Xbox Live’s UK product manager Pav Bhardwaj said this includes Arcade releases, Games on Demand titles and extra add-on content.
“We don’t have any particular numbers as such, but we’ve seen good growth with the arcade titles, and the game add-on business is in growth as well,” he told MCV.
“We’re really pleased with how it’s going. We’re bringing new titles out constantly. We brought out a number of titles a few weeks ago, and now we have Trials Evolution, Minecraft, Bloodforge and Fable Heroes. It’s a new set of amazing IP and some amazing games.”
Sales of Microsoft’s Games on Demand titles, which become available to download online around six months after their retail debut, are also up year-on-year. These are fully priced at around £49.99 each.
“It really is a successful part of our business, we’re very pleased with the growth of Games on Demand and it continues to do really well,” added Bhardwaj. “People are buying the games at full price and downloading them all too.
“Both sides of Microsoft Studios – retail and the Xbox Live marketplace – have been growing year-on-year.”
Microsoft is currently pushing its Arcade Next promotion which consists of four games: Trials Evolution, Fable Heroes, Bloodforge and Minecraft.
“While we wouldn’t talk about specific sales targets, we’re really excited to launch such a strong line-up of titles as part of the Arcade Next promotion,” said Bhardwaj. “With highly recognised IP in Trials, Fable and Minecraft, and a heart-pounding combat experience in Bloodforge, we have high hopes for these titles.
“Specifically, we’ve got big hopes for Minecraft on the Xbox. It does look incredible, it has split-screen multiplayer and is very very true to the PC experience. And then we’re bringing Kinect functionality as well in the future.”

To celebrate the James Bond franchise's 50th anniversary, Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), will launch gamers back through time to relive a selection of Bond's most iconic and intense undercover missions from the popular Bond film franchise with 007™ Legends.
A first-of-its-kind Bond video game, 007 Legends features an original, overarching storyline tying together six classic Bond movies, concluding with this year's highly-anticipated 23rd installment — SKYFALL — to offer the most diverse Bond gaming experience yet! As with the feature films, 007 Legends equips players with state-of-the-art spy gadgets, an arsenal of weapons, including Bond's signature Walther PPK, and sleek vehicles as they jet off to exotic locations and utilize Bond's quick wits, class and style to take down notorious villains and their brutal henchmen, perform impressive stunts, and of course...mingle with gorgeous Bond women.
"To honor 50 years of the world's top secret agent, 007 Legends offers a collection of his most famed moments in the smartest and most treacherous Bond game yet," said David Oxford, Executive Vice President at Activision Publishing, Inc. "Creating a video game storyline that ties together six popular, yet very different, Bond movie narratives can be challenging, but together with EON Productions, our developer Eurocom, has pulled it off to create an homage that we think will be a unique and highly entertaining Bond video game."
In addition to 007 Legends' main story, the game will feature the return of fan-favorite single-player Mi6 Ops Missions, which debuted in GoldenEye 007: Reloaded and challenges players to complete extra missions ranging from all-out action to stealth and gadget-based gameplay and compete for the highest online leader board scores. For the first time ever, players will be able to participate as one of Bond's cohorts or villainous foes, reliving the missions through their eyes, as well as 007's. The robust James Bond multiplayer experience includes local four-player split-screen game modes and online competitive gameplay with new maps, weapons and characters derived from Bond's 50 year legacy. With more gadgets, deeper stealth and spy investigation gameplay, gamers will have every opportunity to truly feel like the world's favorite spy.
Planned to launch this fall, 007 Legends is being developed by Eurocom, under license from EON Productions Ltd. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc. (MGM) for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. Tom Happ, a programmer on Petroglyph Games’ End of Nations team by day, is officially announcing his own independent project, Axiom Verge.
Axiom Verge is a retro-styled 2D example of the (unfortunately named, yet nevertheless, descriptive) “Metroidvania” genre, and is inspired by greats such as Blaster Master, Bionic Commando, Rygar, Contra, Cave Story, and, of course, Metroid. You play as Trace, a relatively normal guy who suffers a fatal-ish injury, after which he wakes up in a strange, unsettling new world that is both high-tech and incredibly ancient.
The Features:
- About 8 hours of play time (depending on how much you explore)
- Over 60 items and powerups hidden throughout the world
- Over 20 upgradeable weapons
- Classic 2D graphics
- Gripping sci-fi storyline
- Pulsing sci-fi soundtrack
Of course, in addition to the many classic gaming influences, there are a few innovations to be had as well, but these will be explained at a later time (i.e. when they’re ready to show
Tom will be submitting the current build of Axiom Verge to the 2012 Dream.Build.Play challenge on May 15th, but the finished game is expected to release sometime in 2013 for XBLIG and PC.
All of the music, art, and code is made by the author.

Today, Ubisoft revealed the identity of the music composer for the highly anticipated Xbox LIVE Arcade game, Trials Evolution. The game features an original soundtrack created by Mike Reagan, a film and game industry veteran, whose work includes scores for Any Given Sunday and the God of War series.
“Since we launched the first trailer for Trials Evolution, people have been asking us who composed the music for the game,” said Antti Ilvessuo, the Creative Director of Trials Evolution. “It has been a secret for some time, but now the secret is out,” he said.
“Mike’s driving beats and pounding rhythms are the perfect complement to Trials’ fast, frantic gameplay and ‘take no prisoners’ approach.”
A free, for non-commercial usage, mp3 of the song “Shadows”, composed by Mike Reagan and featured prominently in trailers as well as the game itself, is now available. The file can be freely distributed and shared with the world!
Trials Evolution launches on Xbox LIVE Arcade on April 18 for 1200 Microsoft Points.

Developer Starbreeze has claimed that the recent instability at retailer GAME “hurt” the sales of its recent shooter Syndicate.
Syndicate was released in late February and was only temporarily stocked in the UK’s leading games retailers GAME and Gamestation following the collapse of terms with publisher EA.
Although EA is now back on board with GAME, stock of all releases post SSX is only arriving in stores today, meaning Syndicate was missing for a key period after its release.
"There's so many reasons why a game succeeds or fails from a commercial point-of-view,” Starbreeze CEO Mikael Nermark toldGames Industry. “We released the game about a month or more ago, and we're doing our post-mortem right now: what did we do right, what did we do wrong, and of course we will look at the commercial side as well.
"The numbers are not as high as we would like, and I think if you asked anyone they would say the same thing about any game they made.
“But [Syndicate] was released in the midst of GAME going under; the retail space is hurting, and I think that hurt us because we were such a retail product."

Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, has a Facebook page in which he posts a short gripe about Comcast. It seems watching video through the Xfinity app on an Xbox does not counting towards your cap on your Comcast data plan. All other services, Netflix included, do. To quote Hastings: 'For example, if I watch last night's SNL episode on my Xbox through the Hulu app, it eats up about one gigabyte of my cap, but if I watch that same episode through the Xfinity Xbox app, it doesn't use up my cap at all. The same device, the same IP address, the same wifi, the same internet connection, but totally different cap treatment. In what way is this neutral?'"The difference, of course, is that you need a Comcast cable TV subscription in order to have the Xfinity app not count toward your monthly data usage allowance. Then again, you can't exactly sign up for a similar plan through Netflix or Hulu.

Microsoft will implement another way to take your money through Xbox Live this holiday season, according to a description on group product planner Praveen Rutnam's LinkedIn profile. It reads: "Developed strategy to further monetize Xbox LIVE subscriber base that will be implemented for holiday 2012."
Without jumping to any rash, outlandish conclusions based on this vague statement, we can't help but consider what this change could be. One innocent possibility is a phasing-out of Microsoft Points, an event that was rumored in January and refuted in translation by Microsoft Switzerland. A more sinister possibility involves a console-based "online pass" and sacrificial spellwork.

Microsoft continues to outsell the competition in the US
Microsoft revealed its hardware sales for the month of March today, noting that 371,000 units were sold in the US during the month, making the console the top selling system for the 15th consecutive month.
It was also the 13th consecutive month Xbox 360 has held more than 40 percent of the current-generation console market share. Microsoft said that total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in March reached $430 million, "the most for any console in the U.S. and more than the spend on PS3 and Wii combined."
The company expects to hold the momentum throughout the rest of the year; Microsoft said it plans to "deliver a strong portfolio of blockbuster titles, experiences and add-on content, including additions to the famed Halo and Fable franchises and groundbreaking experiences like Kinect Sesame Street TV and Nat Geo TV."

BioWare's newest doing twice as well as Mass Effect 2, Kid Icarus also off to strong start
The United States retail sales numbers for March have been released by the NPD Group, and despite the controversy EA/BioWare's Mass Effect 3 leads with 1.3 million units sold. That includes all physical copies sold for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, with the latter platform taking the lion's share with 943,000 units sold according to Microsoft Interactive Chief of Staff Aaron Greenberg. Mass Effect 3 sold twice as well as its predecessor did in its launch month.
The NPD Group also informed Joystiq that Nintendo's Kid Icarus: Uprising sold around 140,000 copies from its March 23 release until the end of the month. It's a strong debut for the title that would've placed it on the top 10 had the list been tallied differently.
Capcom's Resident Evil: Revelations also sold 122,000 units in March after a February 7 debut. Sega's shooter Binary Domain launched on February 28, and eked by with only 20,000 units sold in March.
