Microsoft has cancelled the Inside Xbox video series in Europe as part of wider plans to transition from a first to a thirdparty content model.
The decision follows last week’s decision to cancel the US version of Inside Xbox, which also provided content for Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Streamed directly from the Xbox 360 dashboard, Inside Xbox offered firstparty coverage of Xbox 360 games, products, news and events. European hosts Daniel Maher and Andy Farrant have lost their jobs.
While the content was highly regarded by many Xbox 360 owners, Microsoft’s decision is perhaps unsurprising given its decision to bury Inside Xbox beneath a host of other media and entertainment apps when it introduced its latest dashboard update. The move made Inside Xbox much less visible to content browsers than it had been, just as it did with Xbox Live Indie Games.
It’s widely believed that Microsoft’s long-term goal is to position Xbox as an all-in-one entertainment hub, which will inevitably result in games taking a backseat to more popular forms of entertainment. The platform holder said in March that Xbox 360 users now spend more time consuming movies, TV shows and music online than they do playing games.
While explaining today’s announcement, Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hyrb said that Xbox Live in Mexico and Japan will continue to produce firstparty content via other media outside of the Inside Xbox brand.
"Following the news last week that that Inside Xbox in the US was to cease production, the team in Europe has been investigating what makes most sense for them and the Xbox Live community as they continue to strive to deliver the latest gaming and entertainment news for users across the region.
"As such, they have decided to move away from the current first-party produced content model and transition to a third-party content model, which will provide timely and locally-relevant content to users across more of the EMEA markets.
"Whilst this means that the Inside Xbox brand will effectively be retired in Europe, the focus remains on continuing to provide the Xbox Live community with the latest and best in games and entertainment news and information."

Papers signed in 2008 shows only one Call of Duty studio has control over modern settings
Treyarch’s next game in the Call of Duty franchise could be in breach of a studio agreement signed in 2008 by both Activision and Infinity Ward executives.
Black Ops II is the first original Call of Duty game developed by Treyarch that plays out modern-day and futuristic scenes, yet a Memorandum of Understanding suggests the studio is prohibited from framing its games within the “post-Vietnam” era.
Activision representatives, as well as Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia, declined to comment on the matter when approached by Game Informer.
The Infinity Ward Memorandum of Understanding was agreed two years before studio directors Vince Zampella and Jason West were dismissed by Activision, in a move that sparked a acrimonious and highly public lawsuit.
It is not understood if Activision’s Memorandum of Understanding with Infinity Ward is still binding. The company has not clarified the situation.

Biometrics and laptop security go together like business meetings and boardrooms, but this Microsoft patent hints that gaming could be the next frontier for fingerprint recognition. The claims for "personalization using a hand-pressure signature" detail a product that may look like your standard 360 controller, but it features sensors to detect a user's identity. It seems that, based on each gamer's unique hand pressure patterns, the controller can determine who is holding the device at any given moment and deliver personalized content based on that user's gaming profile. Whatever Microsoft's mystery controller may be, E3 is just a few weeks away, so perhaps we'll learn more then.

Feels like it was only yesterday that the MLB.tv app was landing on Xbox consoles in North America, and starting today, the application will be available to more baseball lovers around the globe. As Major Nelson notes (again), the Major League Baseball service is now live in Brazil, France, Germany, India, Italy, South Africa, Spain and the UK, among a few other nations. Naturally, if you're hoping to catch any ball games via MLB's Premium goods, you'll have to shell out a subscription fee along with having a fancy Xbox Live Gold account. In other 360 news, CinemaNow has made the switch from being a locker-only application to now offering TV show and movie rentals to folks in the US. You can check out what other countries made the MLB.tv cut at the Major Nelson site, link is down below.

The new system will also include a cross-game compatible heart-rate monitor
Microsoft, it would appear, is looking to make a bigger play with Kinect in the exergaming space, as sources have told The Verge that Microsoft will be updating the Xbox 360 dashboard soon to add a cross-games exercise tracking system called Kinect Play Fit. The company will also be releasing a heart-rate monitor accessory for Xbox 360, code-named Joule, that will work with the system.
Joule will be compatible with most Kinect games, but is not necessary to use Kinect Play Fit. Players will be able to keep track of their exercise, see detailed metrics, and upload their data into the cloud.
The Verge did not receive a concrete release date for Kinect Play Fit or Joule from its sources, but it's entirely possible that the company may reveal its plans at E3 2012.

Peter Smith has done the math on Microsoft's $99 Xbox 360 — 4GB model (no hard drive) and a Kinect sensor. Here's why it's a bad deal: 'You'll be paying $99 + $359.76 in monthly fees, or $458.76 over the course of two years. Compare that with (I'm using prices from Amazon that were accurate as of May 7th, 2012) $287.70 for an Xbox 360 4GB + Kinect bundle, and two 12-month Xbox Live Gold cards at $48.41 each, a total of $384.52. So you're paying almost $75 for the privilege of laying out small cash now.' And then there's the not insignificant matter of early termination fees.

We are owned by EA but still very much our own studio, says DICE exec
Sweden studio DICE will resist short-term financial gain and continue to provide map pack content for free, a company spokesperson has said.
Patrick Bach, a senior producer at the subsidiary studio, made the commitment as parent company EA announced that some 6.3 million users played Battlefield 3 in March this year; a significant measure of popularity nearly half a year since the game’s release.
"We don't ever want to charge for our maps and insisted to EA that this attitude was crucial when it came to keeping our community happy and playing together," Bach told Xbox World 360 magazine (via CVG).
Yesterday, Electronic Arts chief John Riccitiello said there were "exciting new developments for the Battlefield franchise” to be revealed as the financial year progresses.
Bach commented that DICE had "generous" amounts of DLC planned for another game in the franchise: Battlefield Bad Company 2.

Microsoft faces China import ban; Legal fees so far 'could finance a small country'
An increasingly complex and bitter legal dispute between Microsoft and Motorola Mobility has escalated to the US International Trade Commission and now threatens to throw the Xbox business into disarray.
Microsoft will no longer be permitted to import Xbox 360s from China to the US – a business practice considered vital in driving down production costs – unless the company wins two separate legal disputes in both court and at the US International Trade Commission.
On Monday a Seattle court heard that both companies “could finance a small country” with how much they have spent on legal fees so far.
At the heart of the issue is a patented Motorola technology that Microsoft uses across a number of devices and technologies such as Windows 7, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and Xbox 360.
Microsoft alleges that Motorola breached contract by demanding “unreasonable licensing fees” for use of the patents. It is believed the royalty rate would have been 2.25 per cent for each unit sale, something which is argued would cost Microsoft some $4 billion each year.
Motorola’s counter-claim is that Microsoft gave up its right to negotiate on the royalty rate as soon as it began lawsuit action.

Subsidized Xbox hardware is now being sold on the Microsoft Store site
Xbox 360, as rumored last week, is now being sold for the low price of $99... with a catch. A two-year contract for Xbox Live at the rate of $15 per month is required.
The deal, which appears to be US-only, is available atMicrosoft Stores and provides consumers with another entry point into the Xbox ecosystem. The 4GB Xbox 360 hardware bundled with Kinect for just $99 is sure to appeal to college students, and other customers looking for cheaper gaming consoles.
That said, while the upfront cost is cheaper, over the long-term it's more expensive. The two-year contract plus $99 console bundle comes to a total of $460, whereas a 4GB Xbox 360 Kinect bundle can be purchased for $277 on Amazon currently. Adding two years of Xbox Live Gold on top of that would still be under $400.
It's certainly an interesting move by Microsoft, and with Wii U launching by the end of this year, the company is going to want to experiment with some pricing structures to put the pressure on Nintendo. If consumers embrace the business model, it's possible that we'll be seeing many more subsidized consoles in future.

A game tie-in for The Avengers film is on the way from Ubisoft, if the info from a recently registered domain name is to be believed.
A Whois listing spotted by Fusible shows the domain name avengersbattleforearth.com was registered through brand protection company MarkMonitor by Marvel Characters, Inc.
Furthermore, the domain name is currently listed on Ubisoft’s nameservers.
No official announcements for Avengers: Battle for Earth yet, but previous speculation had the tie-in delayed indefinitely or even buried for good.
It would seem that’s no longer the case.

Microsoft Research, working with the University of Washington, has developed a Kinect-like system that uses your computer's built-in microphone and speakers to provide object detection and gesture recognition, much in the same way that a submarine uses sonar. Called SoundWave, the new technology uses the Doppler effect to detect any movements and gestures in the proximity of a computer. In the case of SoundWave, your computer's built-in speaker is used to emit ultrasonic (18-22KHz) sound waves, which change frequency depending on where your hand (or body) is in relation to the computer. This change in frequency is measured by your computer's built-in microphone, and then some fairly complex software works out your motion/gesture. The obvious advantage of SoundWave over a product like Kinect is that it uses existing, commodity hardware; it could effectively equip every modern laptop with a gesture-sensing interface. The Microsoft Research team is reporting a 90-100% accuracy rate for SoundWave, even in noisy environments.

The cycle of brief campaigns and endless multiplayer mayhem continues this year with Black Ops 2, the sequel to Treyarch's 2010 pre-Christmas blockbuster and the latest addition to Bobby Kotick's pension fund. From what we've seen so far Black Ops 2 continues the gritty tone of espionage, psychological warfare and end-of-the-world crises that made the original game a hit.
Despite the familiarity of the overused basic premise, the teaser trailer that hit the web last week unveiled some impressive scenes of death and destruction. It also established a firm focus on technological warfare in the future and the trouble encountered when your weaponised toys are turned against you, Black Ops 2 looks set to keep the saturated FPS-fire alive for just...one...more...year.
So what do we want from Black Ops2? We've seen the same ideas churned out every 12 months for a while now, so we're desperate for something, not least to keep Activision's cash cow at the top of its game, the pressure is on for Treyarch. Here's some of our ideas...

Not only has an Xbox Marketplace listing for Obsidian's South Park: The Gameturned up with an astoundingly erroneous release date of today, but it's also revealed what appears to be the game's actual title: South Park: The Stick of Truth.
None of the other assets in the listing (screenshots, description, etc) are particularly revealing, although the box art and banner do look exceedingly legit. Obviously, none of this is official until Obsidian or THQ make some sort of announcement, which hasn't happened yet.
It might be possible that some rogue Microsoft employee, in a nefarious attempt to cause mayhem and wanton confusion, manufactured false artworks and an inaccurate Marketplace listing, but where's the motive? Was he spurned by a former lover? Did he do it for the money, for the fame? Nope, sorry, this screenplay just isn't coherent enough. Get out of my office.

If you’re learning how to play a musical instrument, shoot hoops, or even learning exactly how hard making a golf ball fly really is, here’s one for you. It’s a .
[Rajinder], [Hrvoje], and [Andrew] at UIUC and Microsoft Research figured out a great way to improve the fine motor skills required of sports and musical instruments. Basically, they took a Kinect and tracked a user’s hand in 3D space. Small visual cues like an arrow and colored pixels are projected onto the hand to provide visual feedback. The guys wrote a great paper on their work, and from the results test subjects’ hand movements greatly improved after a bit of training.
While the uses for this hack is obvious for playing a cello or weight training, there’s no mention of using this project for physical therapy. We could certainly see the benefits of this project being used for rehabilitation.

While some of the games press chooses to dwell on the odd notion that Call of Duty has lost its appeal, the public as a whole continue to go crazy for the franchise.
Having released the first trailer for the game on YouTube on Tuesday (May 1st) the video has already passed. 9.5m views and should hit 10m by the end of the day.
And it’s not just the video that has gamers excited, either.
Amazon yesterday announced that the game has smashed the day one pre-order numbers of 2010’s Black Ops by a factor of three.
All signs point to a mammoth three weeks at the end of the year. EA will be aggressively marketing Medal of Honor: Warfighter ahead of its October 23rd release. Then Microsoft will step up with the release of Halo 4 on Nov 6th before Black Ops II arrives on November 13th.

Electronics company Flextronics building new system at Texas branch, claim sources
Microsoft’s next Xbox console is already in the manufacturing stages, according to a report.
Sources have told IGN that assembly of the new system is under way in Texas at electronics company Flextronics, which builds the current Xbox 360.
The firm had allegedly created a testing group specifically focused on marketing software and hardware tests for the new console, and after it completed this, began work on manufacturing.
It is thought however that the new hardware could instead be development kits, rather than consoles ready for sale.
“Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships,” read a statement from Microsoft on the matter.

Microsoft has long been pushing to get the Xbox 360 into as many living rooms as possible, and it looks like it could now be about to attempt a new tactic to further expand its reach. According to The Verge'ssources, the company will launch a new bundle next week that will include both a 4GB Xbox 360 console and a Kinect sensor for just $99 -- the only catch being that you'll also have to sign a two-year contract at a rate of $15 a month. That will give you access to the Xbox Live Gold service, and potentially some additional streaming content, as well as a two-year warranty (there's also naturally an early termination fee for those that break the contract). From the sound of things, though, the new offering could be getting something of a soft launch -- the only outlet mentioned for the bundle so far is the rather limited number of Microsoft Stores in the US.
