[Paul] is at it again with some . You may remember [Paul's] previous shenanigans with the gigantic hand made hydraulic flame-sailed pirate ship. This time he is building a small flame poofer (possibly a series of poofers) for SOAK, a regional (unaffiliated) Burning Man style festival in Oregon.
Any one who remembers the build will recognize the brains of the new cannons, they are just the pirate ship’s custom ATiny board unceremoniously torn from their previous home and recycled for the new controller. This time though they have Kinect! The build seems to function much like the evil genius simulator by simply using a height threshold to activate each cannon, but [Paul] has plans for the new system. This hardware test uses the closed source OpenNI but will meet its full potential when it is reborn in SkelTrack, which was just released a few weeks ago. The cannons are going to go around a small single person dance floor, presumably with the Kinect nearby.
Check out the brief test video after the jump.

Xbox Live Indie Game FortressCraft – better known as "that game that looks an awful lot likeMinecraft" – has sold 750,000 units. Word of the achievement comes from developer Adam Sawkins' Twitter.
As Eurogamer points out, the game has taken heat for being a Minecraft clone. "You can spend ages creating amazing things in it, but Minecraft's never been about the creative aspect, any more than [Grand Theft Auto] is about making sculptures out of buses," Sawkins told the site. "FortressCraft, on the other hand, has focused almost entirely on the creative aspect."
Sawkins revealed last August that FortressCraft had earned over a million dollars. The question is if FortressCraft can hit that million-unit mark in the face of competition from daddy Minecraft, which hits Xbox Live Arcade on May 9.

If the Queen's Jubilee and 2012 Olympics pride have overcome your sense of subtlety, Microsoft has a special game console for you. The Celebration Pack Xbox 360 is a plain-jane 4GB Kinect bundle underneath, but it slathers the console, the wireless gamepad and the Kinect sensor in a tattered Union Jack to remind everyone you're not from Canada. Gamers also get copies of Kinect Adventures andKinect Sports to help them train for the 500-meter relay. Showing your patriotism with an Xbox will cost you £250 ($406) when the console is ready on May 25, while Microsoft will gladly sell you a just-as-British Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 for £30 ($49).

Jamie Berger, VP of Digital at Activision, talks about the growth of Call of Duty Elite
[h=3]Activision Blizzard[/h]Headquartered in Santa Monica, California, Activision Blizzard, Inc. is a worldwide pure-play online...
www.activisionblizzard.com
Call of Duty Elite certainly had its share of stumbles out of the gate last year (as noted by Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg) but the company has gone on to provide a fairly successful social service (over 1.5 million paying subscribers) for fans of the blockbuster franchise. According to Jamie Berger, VP of Digital at Activision, Elite-like services are becoming a necessary component of big games.
"I do believe services like this are going to become a necessity for real franchises that are going to be day in and day out. The world is changing, consumer behavior is changing. Social networks and the always-on connectivity of any device are changing the ways people behave," Berger told GamesIndustry International. "They want to stay engaged with things in ways that couldn't even happen five years ago. I think as a game publisher and developer you have to get ahead of that."
He continued, "You have to be able to engage your consumers wherever they want to engage with you in lots of different and unique ways. You have to provide them social experiences that add to the game."
Indeed, competitors have been watching Elite closely, and it's certainly possible that Activision rival EA could look to create a similar service for a top property like Battlefield in the future.
"When we're talking two years from now... we're going to look at Elite and go 'wow, that has no resemblance to what it was at launch'"
EA COO Peter Moore told us back in February, "Call of Duty Elite... the numbers Activision have talked about, they've done a great job. It's incumbent upon us, whether we do that or do something one step ahead, I think the digital strategy that we're executing against right now - a billion dollars on a trailing 12-month basis - shows that we're doing some good things as well."
Berger, of course, wasn't about to comment on what Activision's competitors might do, but for Elite, he believes the Beachhead studio is only getting warmed up. Berger fully expects the service to continuously evolve and improve, similar to Xbox Live.

The first expansion pack for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be titled Dawnguard and launch on Xbox 360 this summer.
Today's announcement from Bethesda offered no further details, but the company said more information will be revealed at E3 in June.
Bethesda said last month that upcoming DLC will add “new quests, locations, features, and much more to the world of Skyrim”. Game director Todd Howard also said last year that he wants to release fewer but "more substantial" pieces of DLC for Skyrim than the studio has with previous titles.
The first two DLC packs for the sprawling RPG will be exclusive to Xbox 360 for 30 days from release.
Bethesda also launched Kinect support for the Xbox 360 version ofSkyrim today. French, Italian, German, and Spanish versions are all in final testing and should be available in the next few weeks.

The pejoratively branded 'b-team' could now become series' driving force
Activision has lifted the lid on its newest juggernaut in the lucrative Call of Duty series.
Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is in production at California studio Treyarch – which built the original title – and is set for release in November.
Its publisher Activision has launched the websitehours before the game’s worldwide reveal, either as an attempt to plug leaks in the media or due to error.
Game screenshots, videos and news pages on the Call of Duty Black Ops 2 website are not operational at the time of going to press.
The most recent Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare 3, was developed across four Activision studios.

[Bastian] sent in a coffee table he built. This isn’t a place to set your drinks and copies of Make, though: it’s a multitouch table with a 3D display. Since no description can do this table justice, .
The build was inspired by the subject of this Hackaday post where [programming4fun] was able to build a ‘holographic display’ using a regular 2D projector and a Kinect. Both builds work on the principle of redrawing the 3D space in relation to the user’s head – as [Bastian] moves his head around the coffee table, the Kinect tracks his location and moves the 3 dimensional grid of boxes in the opposite direction. It’s extremely clever, and looks to be a promising user interface.
In addition to a Kinect, the coffee table uses a Microsoft Surface-like display; four infrared lasers are placed at the corner and detected with a camera next to the projector in the base.
After the break you can see the demo video and a gallery of the images [Bastion] put up on the NUI group forum.

Ced2911, the famous homebrew coder 360 for a few weeks working on a new project libxenon: make a port Mplayer (an Open Source Media Player) Xbox 360 using the library libxenon. Why use libxenon to do this rather than the SDK which is easier to use for the end user? Because with libxenon you can more effectively harness the power of the Xbox 360 as shown gligli and N64 emulator. Another important point for the choice of using libxenon is the ability to use HDD to NTFS and therefore have more 4GB limit ... which helps when you want to watch HD. Currently the player can play videos at 720p with support for multiple subtitles. The current menu you see will be completely redesigned to look a bit like a real Media Center with tabs (Video, parameters etc ...) an integrated menu during playback more friendly to visually will also be implemented. What remains to be done? - Improve video playback to support 1080p perhaps faultless. Currently some work to 1080p 25FPS, but it is not true of all. - Correct a bug audio desync after a pause .. - Make a real menu / explorer ... And much more You can track projects Ced2911 on its Github . You can track projects or timeliness libxenon on the official forum: libxenon.org If you also makes you kiffer Ced, and want to support it, you can give a small room so that s' offers a beer with you in mind: Don Video:

An error in Trials Evolution's user-generated track ranking algorithm has been fixed, according to Eurogamer. The error, which resulted in newly created high-ranking tracks being promoted at the expense of older, equally awesome tracks has been corrected by making lifetime user ratings part of the calculation. This means that, old or new, the best user-created content should float to the top.
We tried our hand at creating a Trials Evolution course, once. The idea was that the player would ride a motorcycle down an infinite ramp, gaining speed as they did so until they went so fast that they traveled back in time to the very creation of the universe, where they would instantly asphyxiate in the unforgiving void of space. Sadly, no one on staff had the time, patience or motivation to actually make any of that stuff happen, so what we ended up with was the Trials Evolution equivalent of a macaroni doodle.

Come May 18, the Xbox 360 will join historical icons like the Sega CD and Philips CD-i as one of the many proud platforms to receive a port of Advanced Microcomputer Systems' classically animated laserdisc fable, Dragon's Lair.
If you count the and various other non-digital-media pseudo-ports from the 80s, the XBLA rerelease will be port number 67 forDragon's Lair, although its Kinect capabilities make it distinct from its predecessors in that Dragon's Lair is the first XBLA title to support both regular controllers and Microsoft's all-seeing eye. The port also features a "full watch" mode for people too lazy to use either control method, as well as those who enjoy buying ancient animated feature films with MS Points.

Call of Duty is past it. The latest sales data revealed that Modern Warfare 3 has (so far) sold fewer copies than 2010’s Black Ops. A whole 4.2 per cent less. According to some corners of the press, the shooter series has peaked.
Except it hasn’t. Not one bit. A mere 4.2 per cent ‘shrink’ is quite an achievement when you consider how much the overall games market is down (in 2011 the UK games market fell 13 per cent year-on-year. So far this year, it is down 30 per cent).
And anyway Modern Warfare 3 was only half of Call of Duty‘s offering last year.
A priority this year is keeping core gamers on-board well beyond the launch period using the other half. It wants to keep people playing for longer. And to encourage this it launched CoD Elite.
Elite is a social network of sorts that lets users learn more about their games, watch videos, interact with fans, set up clans and a hell of a lot more. It has already amassed over 7m users, with 1.5m of those paying the annual £34.99 fee for the ‘premium service.’ The accompanying smartphone app has been downloaded over 2m times.
ROUGH START
Elite didn’t have the most comfortable of beginnings. In fact, the last time MCV met with Activision’s Noah Heller he was embroiled in a PR battle.
Call of Duty Elite was being shown at E3 for the first time, and the series’ vocal fanbase was not happy. Activision had said that some parts of the online service would be charged for, and although it hadn’t announced what parts and how much, Heller’s insistence that the majority of it would be free fell on deaf ears.
Fans felt Elite was just another way for Activision to extract more money from them. And the outcry was such that the publisher’s CEO Eric Hirshberg joked that nets might need to be erected to stop people throwing bottles during his address at fan expo Call of Duty XP three months later. “The words ‘Call of Duty’ plus the word ‘subscription’ equals ‘unleash blogger hell,’” he said.
A year later, Heller feels the reaction was a good thing.
“It took a while to actually arrive at the conclusion that we wanted to do right by the player base,” he recalls. “How much of the content would be walled off for premium users versus free users was a debate until the end. What you saw at E3 was a very transparent, public struggle we were having internally, in terms of how much we give back to players.
“It was a healthy discussion. If people had heard Elite was coming and there had been no outcry, the picture might have been different.”
TEETHING TROUBLE
Three months later and the fan fury dissipated.
Most of Elite was free, and the premium package was good value for money as it included every piece of DLC – plus the chance to win real prizes – for £34.99 a year.
But the teething problems didn’t end there. Having navigated the PR hurdle, Elite launched alongside Modern Warfare 3 in November and then collapsed. It took almost a month before it was up and running.
“We didn’t anticipate the scale,” says Heller.
“When you benchmark comparable online services that are successful – we were thinking about Netflix, Spotify and Xbox Live – and the conventional wisdom was that it takes a year to get to 1m members. We were at 7m by February with more than 1.5m premium members. And a lot of them turned up on the first day. We just weren’t prepared for that kind of traffic.”
MORE THE MERRIER
Today, Call of Duty Elite is fully operational and developer Beachhead is working relentlessly to make it up to its fans.
The quantity of DLC that’s being given to premium members has increased from 20 to 24. And Beachhead is regularly adding new modes, such as the recent Clan Operations that lets players level up their clans. There’s even a new comedy TV show called Noob Tube, which features user-generated content, plus a second season of the Ridley Scott-produced multiplayer program, Friday Night Fights.
“Every month we try to release one new feature, and fulfill this commitment that we are not going to stop developing Elite,” continues Heller.
“What we are seeing is that people who are into Elite play Call of Duty more. That’s a big way of how we measure our success internally, how much longer do people stay engaged? People who play with a clan are more likely to play Call of Duty than pick up another game. And that is exciting to us.”
Next up for Call of Duty Elite is a new tablet app to complement the existing mobile, console and web versions. And Beachhead is also working on better integrating Elite with the Call of Duty games.
“We want to get to the point where it is really seamless with the game,” Heller says. “I am not allowed to talk much about the next game. But I can say in-game integration is what is exciting the player base. So that is going to be the real focus for the next title.”
ELITE MARKETING
Call of Duty Elite has been a learning process for the publishing giant.
Activision already knows how to launch a boxed product. But an online service is an entirely different proposition. How do you promote something like Elite?
“It is obviously very different to boxed product,” explains Mark Cox, European marketing director for Elite. “We are running a very aggressive search campaign. Also lots of video and social media. And then there’s in-game messaging about the service, that is how we draw our gamers in.”
But retail plays a crucial role, too.
“We have our branded Microsoft point cards, we are working with Sony on a branded PSN card and we are also looking at till-based token systems.
“We want to give consumers as many places to purchase as possible. The cash buyer is incredibly important to the franchise, especially in today’s environment where credit cards are not as widely used. So we need to go into bricks and mortar retail.”
The most impactful form of marketing for an online service is word-of-mouth, and that’s one of the reasons that so much of the service is free, says Heller.
“It would be so easy to say that you can’t be in a clan unless you are a premium subscriber,” he says.
“But what we said instead is that you can’t win a jeep because you are not a premium member, but we still want you in that clan. That way if Mark is a freeloader and he is in my clan, I can say to Mark: ‘We would have done even better if you had been premium. Join up.’
“We want that social pressure. Because we can only run TV advertisements to sell Elite up until a point. We need word of mouth.”
And the best way to achieve good word of mouth is to ensure the service doesn’t fall over when the next Call of Duty arrives.
“We still have to prove ourselves,” admits Heller. “There’s a lot of people we pissed off all the way back to November, and we have to show them that we are not going to let that happen again. But we’ve started fulfilling our promises and I think people are starting to understand that it is real value for money.”
