Lovefilm certainly seems to be on the charm offensive to secure those movie viewing eyes. Yesterday it was the announcement of an exclusive deal with NBCUniversal, and today it's HD streaming for its "Instant" service. Subscribers in the UK and Germany can suck up full 1080p content when viewing on a Mac or PC, and 720p when watching via Xbox 360 or Smart TV (UK only) at no extra cost. The HD library is rolling out now, and currently includes only a selection of films and TV shows, but is set to expand over the coming months. So if you're a paid up member, you can start browsing the library today, and hunt out those HD badges.

Hideo Kojima’s Fox Engine will power the future of the Pro Evolution Soccer series on next-gen consoles.
Fox is a multi-platform engine designed by the studio behind the Metal Gear Solid series. It went into development after the developer shipped Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in 2008.
"What we are trying to do is we are going to win back the crown when it comes to the next generation," senior producer Naoya Hatsumi told Eurogamer, admitting that he wanted to avoid. "That's what we want to do, and to do this we need to have a new engine. That's what we think."
The first game to be released using the Fox Engine will be the new Zone of the Enders.
The news comes as the consumer press publishes its previews of PES 2013, which will be out later this year.
It focuses on increased control when receiving the ball and delicate dribble control when in a one-on-one. It is also the first game in the series with Shinji 'Seabass' Takatsuka not acting as lead developer.
So far the write-ups have been hugely positive.

Microsoft has sold 67 million Xbox 360 consoles since the system launched in 2005.
The figure was revealed in a blog post by Yusuf Mehdi, chief marketing officer at Microsoft's interactive entertainment division. Mehdi, a recent recruit, claims sales have grown each year, and that Xbox 360 enjoys a 47 per cent share of the current-generation console market.
The past year, however, has heralded the system's transition from a pure games console to a multimedia device, and it now boasts more than 200,000 movies and TV shows in its catalogue. The coming year, Mehdi says, will see the Xbox 360 change still further.
"To date, our success with Xbox has been led by a box in the living room," he writes. "Moving forward, Xbox will go beyond the box to reach all new families of devices. Just as Xbox has grown to mean more than games, it also is more than just a console.
"This year, Xbox becomes the premium entertainment service for Microsoft. Whether on your PC, tablet, TV or phone, Xbox will be a gateway to the best music and video, your favourite games, and instant access to your friends.
"You’ll see the first of that next week at E3 where we will showcase the very best of Xbox. We’ll unveil new games, show new ways to enjoy the entertainment you love and, as always, we’ll have a few surprises to share."
Microsoft's E3 conference kicks off at 6pm UK time next Monday, June 4, and we'll be covering it as it happens, with news, tweets, and a live stream right here on Edge Online.

If Mad Riders and the two Sega Vintage Collections coming to XBLA this week don't fill absolutely all of your time, you can occupy every spare second with discounted PopCap games. From today through June 4, PopCap games on XBLA are half off, including Plants vs. Zombies, Peggle, Zumba, Bejeweled 3, and more.
Next week, Borderlands DLC will be half off, as will the Red Dead RedemptionUndead Nightmare Collection and, why not, Sega Bass Fishing. We know there must be someone who has time to play games next week, but we don't want to hear about it.

Microsoft has sold 67 million Xbox 360 consoles since its launch in 2005, raking in more than $56 billion at retail. Kinect has sold 19 million units and Xbox Live has 40 million members, leaving us to question what the remaining 27 million people are doing with their Xboxes if they aren't downloading games or watching video on Amazon Instant, a service announced and rolled out just today.
It would appear the current generation of gaming consoles has sustained itself on its broader entertainment options, and Xbox 360 sales have increased from years four to five, five to six and six to seven, as the above graph indicates.
"The more entertainment options we add, the more time people spend on Xbox," Microsoft said.

Harley Quinn's rampagement begins today on PSN and Xbox 360, and runs through PC in early June. The DLC is part of the Batman: Arkham City Game of the Year Edition, which includes previous packs featuring Catwoman, Nightwing and Robin.
Harley Quinn's Revenge is a plotty affair, beginning with players as Robin as he tracks down Batman, who has gone missing after Arkham City's final moments. Control shifts between Robin and Batman, but is contained to the DLC's world and any previously released challenge maps.
We assume the closed-world setting is a metaphor for the psychological cage that Harley constructed during her time with The Joker, but hey, we're not the psychiatrists here. She is.
Update: Yes, it looks like Harley has made her way to Xbox 360 today as well. Also, Spoiler: There are clownish thugs in Harley Quinn's Revenge.

Peter Molyneux’s Milo may never see light of day, but a part of it lives on with Fable: The Journey.
Polygon reports that the skeletal tracking system that interprets player’s gestures.
But there’s plenty of new tech, too. For instance, the new Fable can be played sitting down – which was infamously a big challenge for Kinect in the past. And the coding included in this new title is a further evolution compared to similar tech found in Forza 4 and Gunslinger.
"With Forza you had to sit slightly on the edge of your seat. But they were a year ago, so we've got an extra year on that. In Journey you can slouch,” studio co-founder Marc Webley stated.
“It doesn't worry that you have your coffee table over there, you don't have to clear space. That was an important step change: people don't have to re-jig their living space.
Creative director Gary Carr added: "I think that with Kinect there are going to be some step changes that will make the games come through. And one of those things is seated gameplay. Because I think a lot of developers were just waiting for that kind of technology.
“It's easier for us to develop it because we're first party, we've got Microsoft supporting us. It's not fair on third parties to write this kind of technology. It takes time and it's probably taken us the best part of two and a half years to write it. Now I think once this is released back to the industry, we'll just see lots of long-play games where you can sit down and play."

As video game leaks go, it's one of the strangest we've ever seen. The below video, posted to YouTube by one Skid Kid, shows plenty of Halo 4 multiplayer gameplay. The only problem is, Skid Kid filmed off of what looks like a 20-year-old standard definition telly, playing a VHS, in a barn. Really. Also, the music isn't safe for work, or your ears. We advise you turn your speakers down, or, preferably, off. While the video is of terrible quality, it does divulge some new gameplay details. It looks like it shows a Slayer match on the Warehouse map, and reveals a faster pace of movement and weapon switching than in previous Halo games.Halo 4's Sprint ability, which developer 343 Industries has confirmed is attached to Spartans by default, looks like it lasts a lot longer than Sprint did in Halo: Reach. We get a feel for the new instant respawning. In past Halo games, you'd have to wait for a countdown to expire before respawning. We also get a glimpse at the Railgun weapon, sword work, new assassination animations, Personal Ordinance and the Promethean Vision armour ability, which allows players to see through walls.Microsoft's statement on the video leak is as follows: "We are conducting an internal beta test of Halo 4 which is a standard development practice for most video games. We have no plans for a public multiplayer beta for Halo 4."Expect more on Halo 4 during Microsoft's E3 press conference next week.

Microsoft's PlayXBLA site posted two "Secret Squirrel screenshots" depicting an unannounced Xbox Live game to be announced for real at E3. Of course, even without the title or any real details, we can get a pretty good idea of what the game's like: it's Avatar-shaped people racing and doing stunts on motorcycles in exotic, dirt-track environments.
With screenshots named "AMX_Mystery," the name "Avatar Motocross" seems like a safe guess. Regardless of the name, Xbox fans have proven definitively that they think bikes are neat – a trend that likely motivated the development of this mystery game.

Engineers in Surrey are using Kinect technology in a pair of satellites, hoping to make them dock together, in orbit, using the peripheral's motion-sensing capabilities.
Surrey Satellite Technology Limited's STRaND 2 satellites will use components of Kinect tech to scan their immediate surroundings and gather spatial awareness from all directions: They are planned to launch, separate and perform safety checks, and then dock with each other again. In space.
In-orbit docking has so far been reserved for the rich kids at space camp, only available in multi-billion-dollar ships. The STRaND 2 satellites will be the smallest yet to link up in orbit.
We think this raises the Gaming vs. Miscellaneous Uses For Kinect tally to 36-5,690, or something in that area. Space points count as triple, because seriously, that's awesome.

Living-room soldiers looking to team up with a real-life buddy for some Ghost Recon: Future Soldier couch co-op may be sorely disappointed once they discover that split-screen multiplayer doesn't exist for the game's campaign mode, despite various online retailers (including Ubisoft's own UbiShop) purporting the game's support of that very feature.
"We've been made aware of the presence of outdated information on UbiShop and several retailer sites stating split screen, cooperative play is available inGhost Recon: Future Soldier's campaign," Ubisoft forum manager EvilPixieGrr said in an update on the publisher's forums. "We have ensured the information has been updated on the sites affected by this."
Luckily for Ubisoft, Future Soldier's actual retail box art does not sing the praises of local campaign co-op.

What the hell is Bungie working on? Unfortunately that's not a question it'll answer at this year's E3.
Bungie's millions of fans will just have to make do with what 343 Industries is showing of Halo 4, because the original Halo-makers have confirmed they won't be doing any official business at this June's expo."We're not going to be at E3 in any official capacity this year," it confirmed on its official blog.
"Some of us will be there, lurking from booth to booth, but don't expect any announcements."
And so the wait continues, despite reports that Bungie is "making incredible progress" with its new top-secret game for Activision.

Microsoft and Warner Bros have announced Harry Potter Kinect for Xbox 360.
The game will recreate a number of the key scenes from the seven books (or eight films, if you prefer) and see players casting spells by mimicking the famous wand-flick action with their hands. Also expect to be calling out famous spells which will be recognised via voice recognition.
It will also allows gamers to scan their faces into the title to create their very own unique witch or wizard who will accompany stars Harry, Ron and Hermione.
It’s being developed by Goldeneye 007:Legends and Dead Space: Extraction studio Eurocom
“Harry Potter for Kinect will engage Harry Potter fans old and new by bringing them into the wizarding world as truly active participants,” Warner Interactive’s senior VP of production and development Samantha Ryan stated.
“Kids and parents will enjoy recreating their favourite Harry Potter adventures, from flying a broomstick in a Quidditch match, to battling pixies and duelling other wizards.”

May 27th, 2012, 22:04 Posted By: wraggster
Fez designer Phil Fish spoke this afternoon of how Fumito Ueda’s design philosophy on classic PS2 adventure Ico helped shape the final form of his revered XBLA puzzle-platformer.
Speaking at Nordic Game in Malmo this afternoon, Fish praised the people who inspired his approach to making games – naming Braun’s Dieter Rams as “maybe my favourite designer of all time”. A mark of good taste indeed.
But it was a 2004 GDC talk, during which Ueda coined the phrase ‘subtractive design’, that helped him get Fez, which was in development for over five years, shipped.
“In earler versions, [Ico] was much busier,” Fish explained. “It had villages, with villagers and shops. There were robots with lasers coming out of their eyes; human enemies too, instead of the dark shadows. They were all fully integrated, playable working features.
“Eventually he realised it was becoming unfocused. He chose to focus instead on the most important aspects of the game, reducing friction between the player and the game world.
“In the end, all that was left was a boy, a girl, and a castle, and it ended up being one of the best games of all time.”
Fish came to a similar point with Fez: feature creep was becoming a problem. There was a health system, with players collecting pieces of hearts, which Fish admits was due to him being “attached to the iconography” of a row of hearts at the top of the screen, an obvious nod to Zelda.
The game also required players to use water to fill vases to activate pressure-sensitive switches; there was another character who left the village and went on an adventure of his own, sending you messages as he went – recalling Luigi’s missives in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. All were “completely unnecessary and detracted from what we thought made the game.”
Instead, the game was really about rotation. “Pretty much everything in that game is a pivot, a valve, something you turn,” he said. “Things that had nothing to do with that core thing that you’re doing every two seconds in the game got cut.”
It harks back to Rams, who “boiled down objects to their absolute, essential forms.” But it comes at a cost, of course: in order to take things out you first have to add them in, and Fish was honest enough to say he doesn’t want to spend five years on a single game ever again.
Fish admitted that what he learned isn't universal, though. After praising Mass Effect 2 for stripping away the original's RPG elements, and Halo’s two-weapon limit and rechargeable health, Fish's attention turned to Max Payne 3 – health is fixed, with players topping up with the painkillers to which the protagonist is so addicted.
“It reinforces the idea that he’s a pill-popping junkie,” he said. “It puts the player in his shoes, makes them feel his addiction. You can’t just remove everything – in this case, it ties very closely with the story.”
Ico, of course, was also in development for five years, beginning life as a PS1 game. While Fumito Ueda famously takes as long as he needs – a philosophy that means The Last Guardian won’t be seen on PS3 until next year - if at all – Fez was made by a two-man team: Fish and programmer Renaud Bédard. The game had to ship, despite the limits of manpower, funding and Fish’s own sanity. Indeed, without the arrival of Trapdoor, which provided much-needed business support, Fish admitted Fez might never have come out.
“I could have kept working on this game forever,” he said. “But you work on something for so long, you have to tell yourself this game is done. It could have had more stuff, but we said, ‘let’s call it a day there’.”
One recurring theme in Fish’s talk was his obvious reverence for Japanese games – so clearly a source of inspiration for much ofFez, but which its designer apparently hates. Fish was devastated by the fallout from his GDC comments, by the reaction to a four-word quote presented in isolation that spread round the world. In the Q&A that followed his talk, of course the subject came up.
Understandably, he didn’t want to talk about it, but did admit that GDC – when Indie Game: The Movie was shown to great acclaim, and when his game was on the cusp of shipping and won the IGF Grand Prize – “should have been the best week of my life.” It turned out to be anything but.
