Xbox 360 owners wanting to get the best possible experience from Battlefield 4 are going to need plenty of spare hard drive space.
EA has revealed that the game will kick off with a mandatory 2GB install, regardless of whether the multiplayer or single player disc is inserted.
As well as this an additional 6.6GB install is recommended from the multiplayer disc and a 5.8GB install from the single player disc. This totals a sizable 14.4GB.
“In addition to the required installation, each disc has additional content you can install to your hard drive for better performance,” EA stated. “We highly recommend performing these additional installations to make sure you have the best experience possible in Battlefield 4.”

Project Spark to be accessible to all Live users on Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC
Microsoft may be lifting its restriction barring non-Xbox Live Gold members from free-to-play games if its stance for Project Spark is anything to go by.
The platform holder's community Mike Lescault confirmed on Reddit: “You will not need a Gold subscription to play Project Spark for free on any platform.”
Free-to-play titles previously released on Xbox 360, such as Happy Wars and Ascend: Hand of Kul, have required an Gold subscription even to access offline modes.
Upcoming game-creation title Project Spark is coming to Xbox One first, with 360 and PC (Windows 8) versions to follow.
In the game, players can use Kinect and Xbox SmartGlass to build environments such as mountains, rivers and towns. Users can also create events such as inter-character battles, while user-created items and objects can be shared with other players.
An Xbox One beta is set for January 2014 and the game expected to be almost complete by then.
Based on Kodu Game Lab, Microsoft’s own crack at a consumer-facing, game-creation package differentiates itself from Sony’s own LittleBigPlanet by claiming to give users the means to control the game design down to minute in-game object actions.

Are you a friend or a follower? In the world of the Xbox One, the distinction is based on reciprocation. Xbox sage Major Nelson has broken down the forthcoming console's Friends app, detailing the distinction between the two groups. As previously stated, friends are a finite resource on the app -- limited to a mere thousand -- while you can have as many followers as your heart desires. A follower becomes a friend when both parties sign on to follow each other, a process that unlocks additional information like when you're online, real-time achievements and other Xbox One related activities. As with social networks like Facebook, you'll be able to control what your followers see.
Friends from the 360 will automatically be ported over, though the gaming luddites on that system will appear as grayed out, smaller icons. An activity feed on the right side of the screen, meanwhile, shows off precisely what your friends are up to in real-time. Check out a video break down of the app from the Major himself, just after the break.

Microsoft can win the next-gen console war, and here are some strategies it might use
The battle for the title of "number one selling next-gen console" has already begun, and Microsoft faces a huge challenge from Sony. Yes, both companies can be successful with new consoles even without being the sales leader in either the US or worldwide. But there's always bragging rights to consider, and game company employees tend to be more competitive than most. We're going to see companies keeping score over the number of consoles sold this holiday season, and telling the world about it.
Both Sony and Microsoft are, of course, already well into their strategies for success. Both companies have finalized the engineering of their consoles and are in manufacturing right now. Game development has been under way for years, and the development schedule is pretty much set for the next year or so. Marketing plans have been drawn up, materials created, and marketing is already rolling out. Given all of that, what can Microsoft do over the next year to improve the Xbox One's chance to be the number one console?
Here are some strategic ideas that Microsoft could implement over the next year in order to boost the numbers of Xbox One consoles getting into the hands of consumers. While some of these ideas might be difficult or unlikely, keep in mind that Microsoft has already displayed unusual speed and flexibility this year in changing policy for the Xbox One on more than one occasion.

Microsoft VP Phil Harrison has tipped Titanfall to be Xbox One’s killer app.
He told MCV that Xbox One is beating its rivals when it comes to games, calling out the reception Titanfall received at E3. The EA-published game is exclusive to Xbox One and 360 (there is also a PC version).
“The most important thing is the games. And coming out of E3, we had almost twice as many ‘game of the show’ nominations than our nearest competitor,” he said.
“The industry, journalists and the media are voting our games as the strongest. We have an exclusive relationship with EA and Respawn on Titanfall, which is the most heralded game in E3 history.
“I had a chance to get in front of Titanfall at Gamescom, and there is a really incredible thing that Respawn has done. The verticality and change in level design from six-foot tall to 40-foot tall is inspired, it is a really magical video game moment. It’s something new, impactful and I’ve never seen before.
“I am very confident that this is going to be a big, big system seller. Every generation sees a new IP explode in a powerful way, and right now I would say Titanfall has a big chance.”

October 14th, 2013, 22:45 Posted By: wraggster
Last week was a big week for Xbox One in the UK.
Microsoft, desperate to escape the shadow of its botched Xbox One announcement, visited Eurogamer Expo to let UK consumers play its new console.
In the opening keynote, Phil Harrison, the firm’s corporate VP, confidently told fans that Xbox was ‘winning the games message’ over its rivals, pointing to its plethora of E3 awards. So confident is he in Xbox One’s success that he predicted it will last for more than ten years.
And it is confidence in the face of a resurgent PlayStation eager to claw back market share, plus the news that PC giant Steam will launch rival living room devices of its own.
MCV sat down with Harrison to talk ten-year life spans, Steam, the future of retail, and why he can’t stop talking about Titanfall.
MCV: You say Xbox One will have a life cycle longer than ten years. What makes you so confident of that?
Harrison: Well Xbox 360 has been getting close to that. When we think about an entire life of a generation, it is going to be measured in decades because of the way these devices are going to be sold around the world. We have seen that already with other consoles.
But when a cycle reaches a certain point, say five years in, we start to see a decline. Ubisoft for one doesn’t want another long console cycle.
The way in which you keep the market fresh is keep the technology fresh and keep the development ecosystem growing so that new and exciting experiences are coming out. And with Xbox One using the power of cloud we can add features, we can add functionality, we can have performance increases over time. I think that will keep the platform very fresh over a long period of time.
"On a macro-global scale, the world is clearly moving
in a digital direction. It is, I think, an unstoppable,
inexorable momentum. We are going to see the world
be truly digital. But with Xbox One we quite correctly
give people choice. They can consume and play
games on disc, and get all the benefits of that. Or
they can consume games digitally. Remember our
games will launch day-and-date on both digital and
physical, so it’s up to the user to choose which medium
they want and have the benefits of either method." Phil Harrison - Corporate VP, Microsoft
Before you joined Xbox, I recall a talk you did called 'Daddy, What's a Disc' at the London Games Conference. It was about the move to digital and the death of physical. So were you surprised when fans reacted negatively to the digital plans you had for Xbox One?
On a macro-global scale, the world is clearly moving in a digital direction. It is, I think, an unstoppable, inexorable momentum. We are going to see the world be truly digital. But with Xbox One we quite correctly give people choice. They can consume and play games on disc, and get all the benefits of that. Or they can consume games digitally. Remember our games will launch day-and-date on both digital and physical, so it’s up to the user to choose which medium they want and have the benefits of either method.
Sony have been offering day-and-date on digital releases for a while, even Nintendo does it. What's taken Microsoft so long?
There are certain technical reasons and policy reasons for it. But we've made it a clear statement for Xbox One that we will be day-and-date for digital and retail platforms.
How do physical retailers survive in your digital world?
I think if the medium is shifting that does not mean the business model has to shift. From research we have done, consumers like to buy things from retail stores. What they might be buying is a time card or a store value card. Retailers have a very important part to play in the future of the ecosystem, but what they merchandise might shift slightly.
In May it was mentioned that your cloud service would be integrated into retail systems. That excited me, because I saw a future where stores could sell a digital game, and have that title sent directly to a customer's Xbox One, where it could be downloaded before he or she gets home. Is that the vision? Or am I getting ahead of myself?
I don’t think you are getting ahead of yourself. I am not going to make any specific promises about what technology solutions will or won't be available. The idea of a console that is connected to your network means that it can update itself. It can check in with the internet, the cloud, and download content while you sleep. So that when you wake up, there’s something new to play. So it’s certainly a possibility.

Turn 10 Studio’s creative director Dan Greenawalt will talk about the brutal, complicated maths that underlie Forza’s handling model for days, if that’s what it takes to prove the necessity of next-generation hardware for making Forza Motorsport 5 work. “The things we’re doing in physics now are simply impossible on last-generation hardware,” he says. “The amount of power to do the calculations we’re doing was just not available, and we didn’t have the knowhow as an industry to do some of the things we’re now doing.”Greenawalt offers an example: “We did good suspension in Forza 4, but there was more to be done. We’re adding open-wheel [cars] in Forza 5, like the 1976 Ferrari and McLaren from the movie Rush, so we wanted to reinvestigate what it takes to do a race suspension model, and that benefits all our cars. Now we have more accurate movement as we’re doing a reverse-kinematic model. Basically we’ve measured all movement – the length of the swingarm, the length of the A-arm – we have all that modelled.”“Tyres,” Greenawalt says, with a full stop. Forza 4 simulated tyre flex using variables ported directly into the game from Pirelli’s own test data, but Greenawalt wanted more.“I was asking Pirelli, ‘These tyre curves you have, this data… how are you isolating camber from wear from pressure and so on?’” he says. “Pirelli’s take was, ‘We don’t and [you can’t]’. So we found a new partner for Forza 5: Calspan. Calspan is not a name that anybody knows, unless you’re an engineer. The testing that Pirelli was doing on their tyres is called Calspan testing; that’s what all the tyre manufacturers use. [Calspan’s] take was different to Pirelli. It said, ‘We’ll need palettes of tyres,’ so we bought palettes of tyres and sent them to Calspan and [it] did two weeks of testing – morning, noon and night – isolating these variables. We now know things about Pirelli tyres that Pirelli doesn’t know about Pirelli tyres. We know things about Toyo and Yokohama that are going to help write the textbooks in two or three years.”

Phil Spencer hints that Xbox maker could open up play between console, PC and mobiles
Cross-platform play between Xbox One, PC and mobiles could be coming to Microsoft’s next generation console in future one its senior heads has hinted.
Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Studios, told AusGamers that he believes cross-platform play is the “future of gaming”, and previous Xbox titles have already laid foundations for what the game publisher may do next.
“This connected ecosystem across all the different devices is definitely where I think the future of gaming is going,” said Spencer.
“You don’t have to do it as a developer, but you have the capability and I think a system like Xbox Live across all those screens where you know who someone is and who their friends are, what their Achievements are and their progression is really critical to that.”
PlayStation has made cross-platform play a priority, making sure that, in theory, all PS4 games can be played remotely from PS Vita. And there have been hints that this could yet be extended to mobiles through the Sony-owned Gaikai cloud gaming service.
But the Xbox team has dabbled with cross-platform play itself, as Spencer explains: “I’m not allowed to leak things [smiles]. But I think what you’re talking about makes a lot of sense. Now you have differences in Windows gaming and console gaming around control and input... in fact if you go back to Shadow Run on Xbox 360 – something I worked on – we had PC players playing against Xbox 360 customers.
“We didn’t have tremendous success with that, but we learnt a lot from it. And then earlier this year we released Skulls of the Shogun, which was a game we launched on all three platforms on the same day, and you could start on one platform and then save the game to the Cloud and play across any of the screens and progress. And then Halo: Spartan Assault has some links between Halo 4 and Spartan Assault, even though they’re very different games.”
Spencer also said that Microsoft has reach out to hundreds of developers and was “surprised that [its plan] hasn’t leaked more than it has”, and added that discoverability will be a major factor in making its new ID@Xbox programme a success.
“[Independent developers] wanted full access to the platform, not just a development toolset that gave them some limited access… so we just wanted t make sure we had the right story and we were telling the story through the lens of the people that were really going to impact,” He said.

As gamers gear up for the release of the Xbox One and the PS4 in November it’s not just the consoles themselves that they’re looking to get their hands on – there’s also an array of gaming accessories coming out that retailers can stock.
“The line-up of first party accessories are looking strong and I am confident that we will see excellent sales during the peak period,” Gem Distribution’s head of category, Jonathan Sutherland, told PCR.
“The third-party accessories, particularly the Turtle Beach XO headsets, also look excellent and I am sure they will perform well.”
Gem offers various Xbox One accessories, including two Turtle Beach headsets at £100 and £150, a wireless controller for £45, a chat headset for £20 and a Play & Charge kit for £20, with the kit and a controller bundled for £60. For driving fans after a racing wheel, Gem offers the Thrustmaster T80 RS for the PS4, costing £90 for both the standard version and the DriveClub edition, and the Thrustmaster TX Ferrari 458 Italia Edition for £350 on the Xbox One. Players who prefer to fight can instead grab the Mad Catz Arcade Fightstick.
Chris Bradley, Meroncourt’s e-commerce and creative marketing manager, commented: “Accessories will always be important to gamers, as they look to upgrade, add to or enhance their gameplay so we need to match and exceed their needs with these products before they even realise they want them.”
Here’s a quick look at some of the hottest Xbox One and PS4 accessories gamers will be eager to get their hands on in Q4:
PS4
Thrustmaster’s T80 DriveClub Edition steering wheel is the first to be created specifically for the PS4. Named after the upcoming PS4 racing game DriveClub, the wheel features 11 action buttons, multi-directional D-pad and wheel-mounted shifters, as well as a large pedal set.
The PS4 DualShock 4 wireless controller features a new multi-touch and clickable touchpad. The feel, shape and sensitivity of the dual analog sticks and trigger buttons have been improved to provide a greater sense of control.
Sony’s PS4 Camera can be combined with the DualShock 4 wireless controller’s light bar, enabling it to precisely track a player’s position in the room. It has two high-sensitive cameras with 85-degree diagonal angle views. Features include navigational voice commands to control the PS4’s user interface and facial recognition of players.
XBOX ONE
Turtle Beach’s XO headset range is built specifically for use with Microsoft’s Xbox One and offers surround-sound quality audio. The headsets are fully compatible with the console’s multimedia services, meaning players can chat in-game using party chat or make video and audio calls on Skype.
Microsoft’s Xbox One wireless controller features over 40 improvements to the Xbox 360’s award-winning wireless controller. The controller has new impulse triggers and streamlines thumbsticks, D-pad and contours for improved precision and comfort whether you’re driving, shooting or just navigating through menus.
The official Xbox One Play and Charge kit features a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery pack and charging cable. Using the kit, controllers are fully charged in under four hours – so users can say goodbye to disposable AA batteries. The kit can recharge your wireless controller while you play and even when your console is in standby.

Double Helix Games has no plans to force periodic downloads on players to keep the Killer Instinct roster balanced. Instead, these changes will be delivered automatically through the cloud.
"All of our variables that go into how a character behaves are going to exist basically in the cloud," said producer Torin Rettig in an interview with Game Informer. "Without having to content update or patch the game at all, we can just go in on the cloud and tweak these variables without the player having to know."
"Our vision is for it all to be behind the scenes, so it won't require any official title update download," added Rettig. "Basically the game checks for the latest version of the gameplay's parameters and automatically updates if it's a new version. No download or confirmation dialogue necessary and the files themselves are so small you'd never notice the difference."
Despite this, Rettig notes that there will be larger patches for Killer Instinct.New characters, for instance, will require that players manually download a chunk of data too large to be pushed through the cloud.

Microsoft Studios VP Phil Spencer thinks cross-platform play between Xbox Oneand PC "makes a lot of sense." In an interview with AusGamers, Spencer said a "connected ecosystem" across a wide range of devices is where he sees "the future of gaming."
"I'm not allowed to leak things," Spencer told AusGamers. "But I think what you're talking about makes a lot of sense." Spencer pointed to Shadowrun, a cross-platform multiplayer game that launched on the Xbox 360 and PC in 2007, as something that Microsoft "learnt a lot from" despite its inability to find financial success.
"This connected ecosystem across all the different devices is definitely where I think the future of gaming is going," Spencer elaborated, bringing up multi-platform game Skulls of the Shogun and the Halo 4 rewards players can earn by playing Halo: Spartan Assault as prime examples. "You don't have to do it as a developer, but you have the capability and I think a system like Xbox Live across all those screens where you know who someone is and who their friends are, what their Achievements are and their progression is really critical to that."
The Xbox One launches in 13 different markets on November 22. The console includes an improved Kinect, headset for voice chat, HDMI cable and aredesigned controller. All who pre-order the special Day One bundle in Europe, available for the same price, will net a free copy of FIFA 14 or Forza Motorsport 5.

Xbox One is hitting the road! SMASH! Bits and pieces everywhere - snap-chat your way out of that.Oh, no, I mean Xbox One is going on tour in the UK before it launches so you can play, think and then maybe sell your car to afford one if you really like it.Have a smashing time!

The notoriously strict German ratings board has banned Capcom’s Dead Rising 3.
The move seriously dents Microsoft’s Xbox One launch plans in the country, robbing it of a key exclusive title. It’s not really a surprise, however, seeing as the first two games suffered a similar fate.
"Dead Rising 3 will not be released in Germany as part of the Xbox One launch line-up on November 22nd having been unable to attain an age-rating upon review by BPjM, the country’s entertainment software self-regulation body," a Microsoft rep told Destructoid.
"While Microsoft is disappointed with this decision, we respect the views of the review panel and have withdrawn Dead Rising 3 from Germany’s Xbox One launch line-up.
“Dead Rising 3 will still be available in all other launch markets on 22 November 2013. Beyond that, we have no further comment.”

A new form of story-telling is about to be invented, and Xbox is at the heart of it.
That's according to Elan Lee, the award-winning chief design officer at Xbox Entertainment Studios. Lee is best known for his work on Alternate Reality Games, most famously the I Love Bees project that supported Halo 2.
He's joined Xbox to create 'cross-media' projects, and told MCV ahead of a talk he is giving at the Power to the Pixel conference next week, that gamers are lucky to be alive today because we are about to witness a revolution in how stories are told. Using both consoles, tablets and other screens to convey a narrative.
He said: "There’s this notion that throughout history there has been very few times that a new form of storytelling has been invented. You can almost count them on your hand – the western theatre, the motion picture camera, and the printing press. All of these big things that changed the way we are able to tell stories, because suddenly we had this incredibly powerful and robust tool to convey a new kind of emotion and a new kind of emergence to an audience.
"And here we are, so lucky to be alive right now, because there is a new one coming into play. We don’t even have a name for it yet. It is something like the internet, or connected networks or interaction, or whatever you would like to call it. Once we have figured out how to use it properly the name will soon follow. It is significant and important and everyone is tinkering around with how we might use it to tell stories. I feel like it is a really good indicator for us as storytellers to be able to acknowledge when we have actually arrived, when we are able to take a motion picture camera and tell the first story that looks like a sitcom. When we are able to take a printing press and tell the first story that looks like the novel. And take the internet and tell the first story that looks like whatever it is it is going to look like.
"A good indicator is, I will be able to explain to my mother what it is I do for a living. Her eyes will widen and she will say: “Oh. I get it now.” That is why it is really important for me to eventually get there, but it is also important to acknowledge that I am not currently there."
Lee joined Xbox this summer after winning awards for interactive TV concepts. He is not ready to announce the projects he is working with Xbox on at the moment. We can expect to hear more in a few months, he says. And these are projects that are likely to works across Xbox One, Xbox 360, Surface and indeed across multiple media.
But, he insists, the sector is very much still in the experimental stage.
"We are very much in the experimental stage and we should be. If you look at our predecessors, and again I will reference things like the motion picture camera. The motion picture camera is invented, released out into a wide market: do you know how long it took to tell the first story using it, when the first sitcom came out? It was a massive span of time. 85 years of tinkering. There was 60 years between the printing press coming out and when the first novel was released. It is a huge, huge amount of trial and error, really brilliant thinkers building on the successes and failures of those who have come before you. And wild experimentation for people to figure out how to use these things.
"That is where we are with this new thing, right in the middle. I don't know when to plant that flag in the ground when the internet and connected networks were properly invented, but we are somewhere in the ten to 20-year range right now, depending on who you ask and how we measure it. So we are very much still in the experimental stage, but also very ripe for someone to step forward and say: “Here is the next big thing, here is how it works. Here is something that is way better than anything that has come before it.”
Elan Lee is the keynote speakers at next week's Power to the Pixel Cross-Media Forum. Which you can read more about here.

Enemy Within’s big question is just how much you’re willing to monkey with your soldiers before they’re no longer human. Certainly, your troops seem more human now – each responding to orders in their native language and wearing armour appropriate to their roles – but XCOM’s expansion is about taking your pawns and tearing them apart until they’re as abominable as the alien threats they face. It’s all for the good of humanity; ours, not theirs.Enemy Within is a director’s cut of sorts – the same story with new beats, the same systems with new mechanics, the same missions with new maps. “The Civilization expansion packs [are] one-third, one-third, one-third,” says senior game designer Ananda Gupta. “It’s one-third new stuff we dream up for this new title, one-third modifications of existing systems, and then one-third fan-service fixing. We’re taking a similar approach [with Enemy Within].”New stuff includes XCOM’s Cybernetics and Genetics labs, where XCOM’s soldiers are filled with alien goo and riddled with robotic components in the name of winning this new, more difficult war. Powerful cyborg MECs can be deployed with flamethrowers, grenade launchers and cover-shredding special attacks, and while they can’t take cover, they can be cover when locked down. Fighting alongside them are genetically augmented comrades who can be modified with alien tech to add passive cloaking systems, psi-cancelling implants and other abilities.

The FIFA 14 update is out now for Xbox 360, EA Sports has announced. It'll be released on PS3 soon.Is it safe to play?
ORIGINAL STORY: EA Sports will this week release the much anticipated FIFA 14 patch to consoles that should make it harder to score a goal.Following complaints from players, EA Sports has tweaked key gameplay techniques, including lofted through balls, attacking headers and finesse shots. There are also bug fixes. Here's what the patch does: - Balancing lofted through balls.
- Balancing attacking headers.
- Balancing finesse shots.
- Improved defender switching during crosses.
- Freezes while making substitutions during gameplay.
- Freezes while entering and exiting Leaderboards.
- Improvements made to Dynamic Camera.
- Corrected crowd sections in Signal Iduna Park.
- Corrected "Any" and "GK" filters in Pro Clubs.
- We've responded to the community and upgraded FIFA 14 cover star Stephan El Shaarawy to 4* Skills in Online Seasons, Head to Head, and Career Mode using EA SPORTS Football Club Match Day. Since the FIFA 14 Ultimate Team ratings and database are separate from the Match Day Update, he will be assessed and potentially upgraded in FUT at a later date.
The patch is live now for PC, and will be released to consoles this week, EA Sports said."We've located some of the issues causing freezing throughout the game, but not all of them," the FIFA team wrote on the EA website."Please continue to let us know about specific instances on the EA forums as your feedback has helped immensely. There are a small percentage of remaining crashing/freezing instances and the team will continue to investigate and address them as needed. Thanks for your patience during this time."

Department store giant John Lewis has predicted a next-gen win for Xbox One.
“We are expecting more interest in the Xbox One,” head technology buyer at John Lewis Jonathan Marsh toldTrustedReviews.
“We are stocking both the PS4 and the Xbox One but if we were to back one, we are thinking that Xbox One will appeal a bit more to our customers in terms of the experience it creates.
“The software that the Xbox One launches with will really appeal to our customer base based on what we’ve experienced in the past. If we had to edge one I would favour the Xbox One.”
Although John Lewis is not the only retailer to report greater interest in Microsoft’s machine – MCV has certainly been told the same by others – it’s fair to say that the majority of retailers are currently experiencing more demand for Sony’s console.
However, Xbox One has certainly experienced a strong recovery after its difficult summer and there’s no way to know which device will enjoy the stronger launch next month.
Stock levels will likely prove the deciding factor.

A new report from Exponential Interactive paints a very different picture of the average Grand Theft Auto V player than you might expect.
The data was sourced from the anonymous cookies from 2m UK internet users who have expressed an interest in Grand Theft Auto. This was then compared with data from the wider video game audience.
It found that those interested in GTA are 33 per cent more likely to have kids and twice as likely to be married as those with a general interest in games. Amazingly, it also found a peak in interest in the 55-64 year old age group above the normal gaming demographic.
Also whereas most gamers are apparently interested in gambling themed holidays, GTA fans are more likely to be interested in adventure and trekking breaks.
In addition, GTA fans have a 63 per cent increased likelihood to be interested in running and are 6.8 per cent more likely to be interested in arts and literature.
Those working from home and those on job seekers do indeed take up a high proportion of GTA players, but a number of professions also seem to take a strong interest – construction (47.6 per cent) and finance (39.8 per cent).
