Normally, patent applications have us guesstimating at future implementations, but not so with this particular Microsoft filing. The USPTO doc, which surfaced just today and dates back to February 2012, has a very direct purpose: it uses two cameras to capture an environment, process the images and then spit 'em back out as a "integrated interactive space," or projection. Sound familiar? We thought so. It's called Illumiroomand it works with Kinect. Outside of a few gaming-centric demos earlier this year, Microsoft hasn't really detailed too much about the in-development tech, nor its destiny outside those research labs. But if this patent app is related, it bodes well for fans of full-body gesture control and immersive AR environments. Because as we all know, a life less real is a life worth living. Right?

Microsoft has changed its mind again and confirmed that a headset will be included with the Xbox One.
The news was revealed in an unboxing video with Microsoft’s Major Nelson, which can be seen below.
Specifically, the Day One edition includes a liquid back version of the console (housing amongst other things both HDMI in and HDMI out ports as well as three USB 3.0 connections), a Kinect 2.0 sensor, the new Xbox controller with chrome d-pad, power cable, external power brick and an HDMI 1.4 compliant cable (meaning full support for 4K displays and 3D).
And of course the mono-headset. Nelson confirms that both the Day one Edition and standard Xbox One will now include a headset in the box.

DigitalDNA on the era of the indie and why backing old publishing models isn't enough
Microsoft must ensure the Xbox One adapts to a publisher-less world if it wants to succeed, says the owner and CEO of XBLIG developer DigitalDNA Games.
Speaking to Develop, Thomas Steinke, who has created games such as CastleMiner and Avatar Warfare, questioned whether Microsoft really understood what it meant to have a platform not dominated by publishers, given its waning support for XBLIG.
He said the success of the Xbox One depends on the firm understanding how to support indies and that he didn't believe "old publishing models would be enough to carry this box", labelling the current industry landscape as the "era of the indie".
"Microsoft created a great publishing system with XBLIG, but then sort of chose to ignore it, and stopped supporting the platform tools that their most loyal developers were using," said Steinke.
"Their messaging on this topic in the past few months has been both confusing and bipolar. This is combination with how they gave such poor support to XBLIG still makes me wonder if they really 'get' what is means to be a player in this new publisher-less world. The reality is, which I don’t think they understand yet is that they have to get this right, the success of the platform depends on it.

Several Xbox One features will require users to have a £39.99 per year Xbox Live Gold subscription ($59.99 in the US), and an Xbox spokesperson has told PCR that more details will follow after Gamescom.
Microsoft has listed the Xbox Gold-only features on theXbox.com website for its upcoming console Xbox One.
These include watching NFL in the US (which could possibly be football in the UK), accessing OneGuide, which lets users get a customised view of what's on TV including trends, and using Skype.
Those who pay £39.99 per year will also have a access to Game DVR - which allows players to record game footage and share it with their friends online - and SmartMatch, which promises to pair gamers up smarter for online matches.
Xbox One owners with Xbox Live Gold will also get the same benefits that current Xbox 360 users receive, such as the ability to play multiplayer games, access premium entertainment apps, view Internet Explorer through their TV and get exclusive offers and discounts.
An Xbox spokesperson told PCR: "At the moment all we’re doing is confirming the Xbox Live Gold features that will be available on Xbox One.
"Certainly not at the moment [we don't have anything else to add], maybe once we’re outside of Gamescom we can talk a bit more about Gold on Xbox One."
Xbox One launches in the UK this November priced at £429.

Microsoft's Xbox One won't allow users without Xbox Live Gold subscriptions to access its Game DVR, touted as one of the game console's most important features. The console also won't allow access to services like Skype, One Guide (the TV guide-esque software built in) and a variety of other internet-based services should its owner not pay the requisite $60 per year for Xbox Live Gold membership. An Xbox.com page lists the features (seen above), while OneHitPixel reportedly got confirmation from Microsoft on the Game DVR not working without XBL Gold.
Of course, the Xbox 360 version of Xbox Live Gold membership enables basic internet-based functionality like streaming Netflix / Hulu / etc., and multiplayer gaming. By contrast, Sony's PlayStation Plus membership on PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3 offers free games each month (Microsoft started doing something similar recently as well), though non-members on both consoles can use various online services (including online play and content streaming); that's changing on the PlayStation 4, where PS Plus membership is required for most online games.

Microsoft's latest refresh of its 2005 console has hit shelves, and Best Buy is helping it hop off those shelves with a gift card worth enough to cover a fresh new game. Naysayers may warn against buying a console that's soon to be outmoded by the Xbox One in November, but bear in mind that you'll need a current-gen console to play the ballyhooed , which comes out September 17. Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 lack backwards compatibility, and GTA V is only coming out on current systems.

Klei Entertainment's excellent 2D stealth game Mark of the Ninja is getting its first bit of DLC with the Special Edition add-on, due 16th August on XBLA and Steam. [Editor's note: We were originally mistakenly informed that it would be coming out the 15th. We apologise for the error.]For $4.99 / 400 Microsoft Points (about £3.25), this expansion will add one new prequel level, two new items, and a new costume that focuses on items and non-lethal takedowns.Furthermore, it will add an optional developer's commentary track to every stage, including the new one. Game director Nels Anderson told me "it's a ton of commentary. it's about 25 pages written out from a bunch of different members of the team. Commentary is something I wish more games did, so I'm super excited to get this out there."We at EG were very fond of Mark of the Ninja. Our Dan Whitehead called it "an embarrassment of riches," in his Mark of the Ninja review. "A game that never rests on its laurels and offers ample replay value, Mark of the Ninja is a much-needed shot in the arm for Live Arcade's lacklustrer summer offering," he concluded.

The Xbox One's game DVR functionality will playback at a fixed 30 frames per second in 720p resolution, it has been confirmed.
According to chief Xbox One platform architect Marc Whitten, the DVR function - which records in-game footage straight to the Xbox One cloud - will feature a fixed resolution and frame rate irrespective of the game's native settings.
"Game DVR captures beautiful clips at 720p 30fps," Whitten told IGN. "The first thing you'll see with our game DVR is the integration of our Upload service on the console."
Whitten also specified where in the Xbox One menu system these videos will be accessible. "You'll be able to see these clips in the Xbox One Guide, in your own game DVR collection, and when you are looking at gamercards on the system.
"You'll also see games take advantage of this platform capability and do interesting things to integrate captured game footage into the game experience itself."
Xbox One will automatically record the last five minutes of a user's gameplay, Microsoft Game Studios' Ken Lobb confirmed last month.
Xbox Live Gold members will also be able to stream their gameplaydirectly to Twitch.

Bungie hopes that clever game design in its new online-only shooter Destiny will encourage positive player interaction and prevent trolls from ruining the fun.
Destiny leads the charge in a new wave of online-persistent shooters that blur the lines between story-driven single-player campaigns and online multiplayer scenarios.
Bungie technical director Chris Butcher has told Edge that the studio wants to "make sure the social experience is one where if the players aren't co-operating or communicating effectively it doesn't ruin anyone's experience."
Butcher elaborated, "If you look back at online multiplayer gaming for the last ten years I think the dominant thread has been adolescent males shooting each other in the face and squatting on each other's corpses.
"And that emerges from design decisions, some of which were intentional, some of which were not, but the community gets attracted towards that, and that is popular to a lot of other people and so it kind of tends to exclude others."
Without going into specifics, Butcher says that Destiny will be designed in a way that the developer hopes with encourage positive behavior and render trolls irrelevant.
"I don't think you can ever design toxic behaviour out, you can't ever stop players from being toxic," Butcher admits, "but what you can do is prevent them being able to ruin other players' experiences."
He goes on, "You give people these tools that encourage them to interact positively with each other and then if someone is interacting negatively with you, well, they can't ruin your experience."
Bungie's publisher Activision is incredibly optimistic of the former Halo studio's latest work. Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg said last week that Destiny has the potential to become Activision's third billion dollar franchise, alongside Call of Duty and Skylanders.
"We strongly believe we are on pace to set the all-time pre-order record for a new IP," said Hirshberg.
The Destiny is due for release in 'early 2014' on PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

One of the many uses for Microsoft's vaunted 300,000 Xbox Live servers for the Xbox One is to power the Game DVR, which lets you record, edit and re-visit your many exploits. Platform chief Marc Whitten told a panel that the resolution will be limited to 720/30p video, even if the game itself is higher resolution (Forza Motorsport 5 is 1080/60p, for instance). The console will automatically record the last five minutes of your gameplay, and can even save the last 30 seconds of action on command without interrupting play. Whitten added that all of that footage would be stored in the cloud, letting you edit and share content via Upload Studio. Games will create "magic moment" videos from such footage, which you can view from the Xbox OneGuide, your personal DVR collection and the gamer cards of other players. That sounds like a lot of footage, even for 300k servers -- which may explain why Microsoft limited the resolution to 720p.

Microsoft has revealed a number of new details about Xbox One, including a significant upgrade to avatars.
Chief Xbox One platform architect Marc Whitten told IGNthat the company is upgrading Xbox Live avatars to allow for full-body HD gamerpics. In fact, the old 64x64 gamerpics are being ditched altogether in favour of a full-HD alternative.
“They are beautiful,” Whitten reckons. “You are going to see some really cool hero moments, like when you login to see personalized views of your games and other content.”
The exec also confirmed that Xbox One’s DVR functionality, which will constantly capture gameplay footage, records footage at 720p and 30 frames per second. This footage can then be edited and uploaded directly from the console.
There’s more too – Whitten has revealed that games released on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One will have separate Achievements on each platform. So for instance, an owner of both consoles will be able to buy Call of Duty: Ghosts on each and earn two sets of Achievements.
“But on the Xbox One version, you’re getting a much richer set of features, such as seeing your achievements progress on the Xbox One console, being able to unlock new achievements throughout the year, and earning real prizes inside and outside of the game,” he added.
“Xbox One also enables a new concept of challenges, where games will be offering special time-based opportunities to earn various goals and collect the rewards.”

Assassin's Creed 4 director Ashraf Ismail has revealed that Ubisoft has a rough idea for the ending of the franchise.
Speaking with Eurogamer, Ismail confirmed that there "is an end" to the Assassin's Creed franchise.
Ismail explains that among the multiple development teams, there is a brand team that "sits on top and is filled with writers and designers concerned with the series' overall arc. So there is an overall arc, and each iteration has its place inside this."
"There is an end", Ismail says, but nothing is set in stone, and there is room for changes.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot announced that Assassin's Creed would adopt an annual release strategy, so with a game being shipped each year, Ismail says that "depending on the setting, depending on what fans want, we've given ourselves room to fit more in this arc. But there is an end."
The latest in the series, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is set for releaseon PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U October 29 in the US, October 31 in Australia, and November 1 in the UK.
Ubisoft detailed the Assassin's Creed 4 PlayStation exclusive content last month, and for more on the swashbuckling adventure, check out thelatest screenshots.

August 5th, 2013, 19:43 Posted By: wraggster
Game designer and professor Jesse Schell has argued that Microsoft’s big mistake with Xbox One was one many global companies make – it listened to its customers.
"Your customers want you to stay the same, even if it drives you into the ground," Schell told Games Industry. "The problem is that the hardcore folks always want the same thing: 'We want exactly what you gave us before, but it has to be completely different.'
"Somehow, Microsoft didn't seem to think that would be a reality, or even a problem.
"The reality is that they can't do what the customers want. They came out and said, 'We're gonna do this new thing.' And the customers said, 'No, we don't want that, we hate that' - even though it's what they really want and what they will ultimately buy.
“So now Microsoft has had to say they won't do all that stuff, but someone will. That's how it always goes. This is the lesson of the innovator's dilemma.
“Why is it that big companies fail when the technology changes? It happens in every industry, so what's the pattern? What are they all doing wrong? Everyone says, 'Oh, it's because they're stupid. Big companies are stupid.' They can't be stupid. How did they get that big and stay that big if they're stupid? Microsoft isn't stupid.
"There's one mistake that they all make, and that mistake is listening to their customers."
Last week Codemasters founder David Darling also criticised Microsoft for bowing to pressure and reversing its Xbox One policies.

August 4th, 2013, 19:45 Posted By: wraggster
A Microsoft patent for a "head-mounted display device" has been discovered, once again suggesting the platform holder intends on augmenting the Xbox experience with gaming glasses technology.
The patent states the device is intended for "inviting a potential player to participate in a multiplayer game" and uses a combination of "eye-tracking information, depth information, facial recognition information, potential player head-mounted display device information, and/or potential player voice data" to do so.
The patent was discovered one year after aleaked document showed that Microsoft was internally developing Kinect glasses technology.
"The program associates the invitation with the potential player using the eye-tracking information, the depth information, the facial recognition information, the potential player head-mounted display device information, and/or the potential player voice data," explains the patent.
"The program matches a potential player account with the potential player. The program receives an acceptance response from the potential player, and joins the potential player account with a user account in participating in the multiplayer game."Online multiplayer games are typically played across multiple hardware devices in various locations. Such games may associate a particular user to a hardware device via an abstraction, and make a connection through the abstraction to the device. Additionally, some multiplayer games may be played through a hardware device, such as a gaming console, that is typically located in a fixed location, such as an entertainment room in a home.
To invite others to join a multiplayer game, a user may access and work through a menu system with his or her hardware device to send an invitation to another player. Using such a menu system may be time-consuming and may involve the user focusing on the tasks associated with sending an invitation. Such a menu system may also offer a stilted and limited user experience that discourages a user from making spontaneous invitations. Additionally, if the user is actively playing a multiplayer game, using such a menu system to send invitations mid-game may take the user away from the game action. Further, where the user's hardware device is located in a fixed location, the user's ability to make face-to-face invitations in other locations may also be limited.
To address the above issues, a multiplayer game invitation system including a user head-mounted display device and related methods for inviting a potential player to participate in a multiplayer game are provided. In one example, a method may include receiving user voice data from a user and determining that the user voice data is an invitation to participate in a multiplayer game. Eye-tracking information, depth information, facial recognition information, potential player head-mounted display device information, and/or potential player voice data may be received. The invitation from the user may be associated with the potential player using the eye-tracking information, the depth information, the facial recognition information, the potential player head-mounted display device information, and/or the potential player voice data.
The method may include matching a potential player account with the potential player. The method may further include receiving an acceptance response from the potential player, and joining the potential player account with a user account associated with the user in participating in the multiplayer game.
Eye-tracking information, depth information, facial recognition information, potential player head-mounted display device information, and/or potential player voice data may be received. The invitation from the user may be associated with the potential player using the eye-tracking information, the depth information, the facial recognition information, the potential player head-mounted display device information, and/or the potential player voice data."
Images attached to the patent show people engaging in activities such as dancing, playing tennis and sword fighting in a virtual reality setting, suggesting the device can be used for more than just connecting with other players for multiplayer.

Microsoft wants you to help protect Xbox Live. With the Enforcement United beta, Redmond is using its customers as a first line of defense against online miscreants. If you make it into the testing pool, you'll be giving your opinion on whether or not content on the service violates its code of conduct. At first it's just Gamertags, but givenXbox One's focus on user-made media, that'll likely expand. The united enforcers won't have the last word, of course. Once the query passes through them, it's filtered into an algorithm that determines the next step: either forcing a username change, or escalating the ticket to an actual Microsoft employee for review. What's in it for you? A (hopefully) friendlier Live, and XP that'll move you through the ranks of the Haloowner's gamified participation program, Xbox Community Level. If you get in, we'd appreciate if you went ahead and flagged all those handles with "69" and "420" in them -- trust us, they'll thank you later.

id Software co-founder still has problems despite hardware improvements
[h=3]id software[/h]id – defined by Freud as the primal section of the human psyche; id Software, located in Mesquite, Texas,...
idsoftware.com
id Software co-founder John Carmack has addressed the "fundamentally poor" interactions offered by Kinect, and casting doubt over its relevance for game development.
In the opening keynote of Quakecon 2013, Carmack acknowledged that Kinect was targeted at a "broad consumer base" with different demands and expectations to his own. However, he argued that even the new iteration of the hardware - on paper, a big improvement over the launch version - has obvious flaws.
"I think Kinect still has some fundamental limitations with the latency and frame rate on it," he said, as reported by Polygon. "Interacting with it is still ... when you interact with Kinect, some of the standard interactions - position and hold, waiting for different things - it's fundamentally a poor interaction.
"One way that I look at it is - I used to give Apple a lot of grief about the one button mouse. Anybody working with a mouse really wants more buttons - [they're] helpful there. Kinect is sort of like a zero button mouse with a lot of latency on it."
In recent months, the conversation around the Kinect has been dominated by concerns over the hardware's potential for data collection, and even spying. However, Carmack expressed his belief that such matters will be fleeting, akin to the debate over the inclusion of GPS capability in smartphones.
Carmack also threw his hat into the ring on another controversial facet of Xbox One: the now abandoned emphasis on digital media. While the veteran programmer stated no strong opinion, he described the public outcry as a "witch-hunt" and "a bit unjustified."
"The future is obvious right there," he argued, "and it will be good for us in general."

Pre-orders for Call of Duty: Ghosts are down compared to last year’s Black Ops II, Activision has admitted.
It would be easy (and quite possibly wrong) to label this as the beginning of Call of Duty’s decline. Indeed, former EA man John Riccitiello would likely toe that line.
However, Activision has blamed the uncertainties surrounded the transition from current to next-gen.
"As one might expect in this console transition year, pre-orders for Call of Duty: Ghosts are well below the record-setting pace set by Call of Duty: Black Ops II last year,” Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg told investors, as reported bySeeking Alpha.
“However, our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation amongst past club pre-orders is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition.
“It's worth mentioning that Ghosts pre-orders are over double those of Call of Duty: Black Ops, which is the last time we launched a new sub-brand for the franchise. It's also worth mentioning that our other key engagement metrics from the number of people playing per month to the number of people playing daily to DLC sales, to video views, to community engagement are all significantly ahead of past years.
“We also have in place the most aggressive marketing retail and digital programs in the history of the franchise. We've made substantial investments to make Ghosts a showcase for the next-gen consoles and also the best current-gen Call of Duty title ever.”
Activision isn’t alone in attributing blame for low pre-orders on the next-gen. EA last month blamed the same phenomenon on a decrease in pre-orders of its EA Sports titles.

The ongoing work fine-tuning the Xbox One hardware has resulted in spec increases, Microsoft has revealed.
Specifically, speaking on the Major Nelson podcast Xbox chief product officer has confirmed that since E3 the company has upped the console’s GPU clock speed from 800MHz to 853MHz.
“Since E3 we’ve dropped in what we internally call our ‘mono driver,’” he stated, as reported by Kotaku. “It’s our graphics driver that really is 100% optimized for the Xbox One hardware.
“You start with the base DX driver and you take out all parts that don’t look like Xbox One and you add in everything that really, really optimizes that experience. Almost all of our content partners have picked it up now.
“This is the time where we’ve gone from theory of how the hardware works – what do we think the yield is going to look like, what is the thermal envelope, how do things come together – to really having them in our hands. That’s the time where you start tweaking the knobs because either your theory was right dead-on or you were a little too conservative or you were a little too aggressive.
“It’s just an example where we really get close to the final performance envelope of how the box works and really making sure we have a great product for our developers to build great games against.”
How Xbox One and PS4 compare to one another in raw graphical terms remains a matte of debate. Id’s John Carmack, for instance, says the two are systems are “very close” and that both, incidentally, are “very good”.
Analysis from Digital Foundry, however, suggests that PS4 possesses around 50 per cent more raw visual oomph on paper, although other factors see this translate to a real-world gain of approximately 25 per cent.
