Microsoft is giving away all the Killer Instinct characters to select Xbox users, effectively unlocking the game in full (minus costumes and accessories it seems). Hundreds of social media users are reporting their Christmases have come early, after they received emails from Microsoft telling them they'll get the full roster of fighters as a freebie.
The Xbox One launch game is otherwise a free download with one character unlocked. The seven remaining characters are priced $5 each, and there's a $20 all-in-one bundle that unlocks all eight fighters, including two extra ones not initially available.
The giveaway isn't limited to Killer Instinct, because a seemingly much smaller group of users is getting the console itself completely free. Just a few Twitter users at the time of writing, including some MicrosoftMVPs, are reporting they've received a code today that entitles them to a free Xbox One - just like that.
For the record, Microsoft MVPs (Most Valuable Professionals) are not company employees, but people who've been recognized by Microsoft for "their exceptional achievements in technical communities."
Microsoft's official Xbox Support Twitter accounts haveconfirmed the emails for both the Killer Instinct and the Xbox One freebies are legit. We've reached out to Microsoft to confirm the specifics of what's going on, and who exactly is entitled to receive what. We're not seeing any obvious rhyme or reason to the people receiving the Killer Instinct freebies, but if you were one of the lucky ones, please let us know in the comments. If not, come give us a hug, becausewe'll get through this.

Earlier today, social media was abuzz with reports of individuals claiming Microsoft had gifted them the entire Killer Instinct roster, free of charge. Others, including OperationSports writer Bishop Tart, mentioned that Microsoft has even promised a free Xbox One console.
But what makes one eligible for such a gift? Without going into too much detail, a Microsoft representative told Joystiq that, naturally, selection was fueled by individuals' Gamerscore and length of time on Xbox Live. Being an Xbox customer also helps.
In a statement to Joystiq, the Microsoft representative said the company "considered a variety of things including Gamerscore and Xbox Live tenure, as well as other factors in markets where Xbox One is available." Some MicrosoftMVPs, non-employed evangelists of the Microsoft brand, have been selected, but it would appear even regular schmoes are also eligible too. "Through this program, we're rewarding some of our biggest fans around the world," the statement added.
Unfortunately, Microsoft couldn't offer us any more detail on the program or just how many individuals have been selected to receive a gift; however, some "customers have received email messages with additional information" on how to claim their gifts.
The Xbox One launches across 13 different markets on November 22.

Microsoft has published the Xbox Live Marketplace release schedule for the next few weeks.
In addition to the Xbox Live Arcade releases of Final Exam and Contrast, there are game add-ons for Bioshock Infinite, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, Saints Row IV and WWE 2K14.
Late last month, Microsoft confirmed that Xbox Live Arcade titles A World Of Keflings and Iron Brigade will be the two free games featured for November as part of the Games With Gold programme
Announced at E3 in June, Games With Gold gives subscribers two free games to keep each month, with a new title available on the 1st and 16th of each month.
Originally planned to be a limited campaign to run until the end of 2013, Microsoft recently confirmed that Games With Gold would be an "ongoing benefit" with no end date planned.

Microsoft detailed its DLC plans for the Xbox One launch title Forza Motorsport 5, revealing that it will offer a $49.99 "Car Pass" that collects the game's first six batches of add-on content.
Developer Turn 10 will release a selection of new cars for Forza Motorsport 5monthly, and players will be able to purchase vehicles either a la carte or via discounted "Car Pack" bundles. Microsoft notes that the Car Pass offers an 18 percent savings over buying each pack individually, suggesting that Car Packs will be priced at around $10 apiece.
The LaFerrari hypercar, pictured above, headlines a 10-vehicle Car Pack launching alongside Forza Motorsport 5 on November 22.

PopCap "mischaracterised" time of its release, will hit Xbox Live in time for Christmas
[h=3]PopCap Games[/h]popcap.com
Popcap's Peggle 2 is the latest game to slip from a launch day release on the new generation of consoles.
Peggle 2 was intended to be a launch title for Xbox One, but PopCap has confirmed that it will no longer make the November 22 deadline.
In a comment issued to GamesBeat, PopCap's senior director of PR, Garth Chouteau, said, "Peggle 2 is a 'launch timeframe' title. but [it] will not launch day-and-date with the Xbox One. Instead, it will become available a few weeks later in December."
Microsoft announced Peggle 2 as an Xbox One launch title at Gamescom in August - as a post on the Xbox blog clearly indicates. However, PopCap now insists that it was never the case, with Chouteau admitting that it may have "mischaracterised" the timing of the game's release.
In the last month, several next generation launch-day titles have slipped, most prominently Sony's PS4 exclusive Drivecluband Ubisoft's eagerly awaited multiplatform title, Watch Dogs. Indeed, the Watch Dogs delay was so keenly felt it directly contributed to a 20 per cent slump in Ubisoft's stock value.

November 5th, 2013, 11:14 Posted By: wraggster
Call of Duty: Ghosts developer Infinity Ward has at last explained the reason for the resolution discrepancy of the game between PS4 and Xbox One.
It was revealed last week that the game will output in full HD 1080p on PS4 but in HD ready 720p on Xbox One.
The reason, executive producer Mark Rubin has toldEurogamer, is not necessarily hardware based but is instead linked with the two console’s development software, which in itself is still evolving.
“I don't know if I can point to one particular cause,” he claimed. “Early on, we didn't know where exactly the resolution of anything would fall because we didn't have hardware or the software to support it. We tried to focus in on 1080p, and if we felt like we were on borderline of performance somewhere.
“It's very possible we can get it to native 1080p. I mean I've seen it working [on Xbox One] at 1080p native. It's just we couldn't get the frame rate in the neighbourhood we wanted it to be.
“And it wasn't a lack of effort. It wasn't that it was like last minute. That call wasn't made until a month ago.
“There's no specific, oh, well, the VO chat on Xbox took up so much resources that we couldn't do 1080p native. There's no definitive one to one per se cause and effect. It's just an overall thing.
“I definitely see/hope both platforms will look way better the next time we get a chance at it. As an obvious analogy – and if people are not sure about this it's pretty simple – look at Call of Duty 2 versus COD 4. It was a massive leap forward in graphics, and that's just because it takes time to get through this.
“First launch, first time at bat at a new console is a challenging one. That's just the way it is. For people fearful one system is more powerful than the other or vice versa, it's a long game.”

Celebrated French composer Olivier Deriviere (Remember Me, Alone In The Dark) has created a unique musical score for Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Freedom Cry, the latest chapter in Ubisoft's historical action-adventure open world video game series. Set in the Caribbean at the dawn of the 18th Century, Freedom Cry is a stand-alone story about Adéwalé, a former slave-turned-assassin who attempts to save his enslaved people in Haiti. To immerse players in the game, Deriviere's sweeping emotional score features performances by a world-class symphony orchestra as well as live drums, a cappella soloists and choir performed in the tradition of Afro-Haitian ancestral music. The Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Freedom Cry Original Soundtrack will be available for digital download on iTunes and other digital music sites to precede the release of the game.
Composer Olivier Deriviere recorded his original score for Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Freedom Cry with the The Brussels Philharmonic (The Artist) andLa Troupe Makandal, the internationally acclaimed ensemble dedicated to traditional Haitian music and dance. The troupe's distinctive drumming and vocals were recorded at Avatar Studios in New York with multiple Grammy® award-winning engineer Silas Brown. Driven by his passion to provide players with a unique musical experience that truly reflects the game, both musically and historically, Deriviere blends the orchestra with traditional Afro-Haitian musical elements to deliver an authentic score that reflects the Afro-Haitian struggle for freedom as told through Adéwalé's story. Preview samples of the score are available at SoundCloud.
Classically trained multimedia composer Olivier Deriviere has scored numerous animation, film and video game soundtracks including the widely acclaimed interactive scores for Remember Me, Alone In The Dark, Of Orcs and Men and the Obscure video game series. An alumnus of Berklee College of Music (Jazz and Film Scoring) and the National Conservatory in Nice, France (Composition and Orchestration), Deriviere has recorded with the GRAMMY® award-winning choir The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices, Philharmonia Orchestra, The Boston Cello Quartet, The Boston String Quartet, The Children Choir of the National Opera of Paris. His music has also been performed by the Cannes Symphony Orchestra, Monte Carlo String Quartet, and Utrecht Metropolitan Orchestra and Choir.
Born a slave, Adéwalé found freedom as a pirate aboard the Jackdaw where he became Edward Kenway's second-in-command. Now, 15 years later, Adéwalé has become a trained Assassin who finds himself shipwrecked in Saint-Domingue without weapons or crew. He starts to meet locals in an effort to assemble a crew and steal a ship. The more he helps, however, the more he is drawn into the Maroon slave community. Forced to face his past, Adéwalé sets out to free the slaves and bring death to their captors.

Ubisoft has sentits online pass program to Davy Jones' locker following players' complaints over gated content in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. Before, if players wanted to access the game's online multiplayer features, companion app and related bonuses they would have to input a single-use code that came with new copies of Black Flag. Not any more, though. The French publisher has completely scrapped the Uplay Passport system from all upcoming games and is providing free codes via Xbox Live and PlayStation Network for players who don't have one (e.g., because they bought a used game or borrowed it from a friend). With Electronic Arts dropping its online pass system earlier this year, Sony doing the same for its first-party software and Ubisoft finally following suit, one of the game industry's more awkward experiments could finally be behind us.

The Xbox One will stream media from your home network and play audio CDs, Microsoft tells Penny Arcade Report. In that way, the One is much like the Xbox 360. When it comes to MP3 playback, however, it's a little trickier. The Xbox One is a Play To device that supports Redmond's PC and mobile ecosystem, but not much else. This comes just days after Sony released its massive FAQ that said, among other things, that the PlayStation 4 wouldn't do any of the above. If you're looking for a new do-all device for your A/V rack, the Xbox One could be it.

Electronic Arts says FIFA 2014 on Xbox One and PS4 is the best football game it has ever made.
The title will launch alongside both machines next month and producer Nick Channon says the game is a great base from which to launch more products in the lucrative football franchise.
‘’The philosophy for us over the last five or six years has been how do we make significant innovation each year in gameplay?’’ he told MCV. ‘
’How do we make the game more authentic and more fun at the same time? We need to get the balance right between authenticity and fun – we are making a video game at the end of the day. What we have right now with FIFA 14 is a great base, a fantastic game and moving forward it is a huge opportunity.
‘’When you are working with new technology you learn more about it as you go – you have more power, more memory and these are the things you can play with. It’s about maintaining that philosophy of deep innovation in gameplay. For me the opportunities are huge. It’s really exciting.’’
FIFA games that launch alongside consoles have a chequered history in terms of quality. But Channon insists this will not be the case this time.
‘’This is the best FIFA we have ever made. We wanted to make a next-gen game that is fully featured, which has not always been the case, and that has significant innovation in gameplay and presentation. The feeling when you play the game is entirely new. We’ve been very fortunate in our success with FIFA and we are translating that to a new platform.’’

Computing giant also explains how developers and users can use facial expressions to control gameplay on Xbox One titles
Microsoft has detailed how the Xbox One motion sensing peripheral Kinect collects information and personal data.
In a new privacy statement, the firm said the tech is able to measure the distance between key points on a user's face to create a specific numeric value for that player. This information is then used to authenticate that user when they access the console.
Microsoft was keen to stress that it would not be possible for anyone viewing such data to know that it represents a certain person, as it only gathers numerical information.
The privacy statement noted that developers will be able to use facial expressions as a form of input to affect the game. This means that certain expressions could be used to control or influence gameplay.
Microsoft said data collected from this is not used to identify users, and would be destroyed after a game session.
Users will be able to control how their photographs taken during gameplay will be used by Microsoft, and whether any voice commands are collected by the company for analysis.
Microsoft also said that for certain titles, skeletal movements can be used to estimate exercise stats, but players will be able to decided whether this information is shared.
As for voice chat in games over Xbox Live, the firm said users "should not expect any level of privacy concerning your use of the live communication features such as voice chat, video and communications in live-hosted gameplay sessions offered through the services".
"We may monitor these communications to the extent permitted by law, but we cannot monitor the entire Service and make no attempt to do so. You understand that others can record and use these communications. Communications in live-hosted gameplay sessions may also be broadcast to others. Please note that Xbox does not listen in on Skype calls."
You can find more information on Microsoft's Xbox One and Kinect privacy policies here.

The latest game from Neuron Vexx, aptly named ‘Ultimate Drunken Warrior Master EX Alpha 2.5 Complete Edition: DLC to follow’, is now available on XBLIG. Clearly not taking itself too seriously Ultimate Drunken Warrior is a one on one fighter that offers players a post-pub fisticuffs simulation. In keeping with this theme players must fight their opponent while simultaneously struggling to maintain their drunken balance.
To imitate that drunk like experience game creator Zac Wootton comments “Players have direct control of their limbs which naturally leads to some pretty bizarre looking movement. The idea wasn’t to create a hard core fighting game but instead a fun game, even if a little silly, designed to hopefully give you a laugh.”
Key features of the game include:
- Directly control the limbs of your drunken warrior
- 5 levels of drunkenness that impact your balance
- Challenge and Quick Fight Modes
- Up to 16 player Tournament Mode
- The Mankini - for unrestricted fighting awesomeness

Bigger is always better, right Microsoft? In the lead-up to the Xbox One's launch, Microsoft's hype-making marketing machine's gone a bit mental and planted a larger-than-life Xbox One replica in a Vancouver, Canada parking lot. Why? Well, it's mostly to generate social buzz and secure your launch day dollars (be they Canadian or American, next month), but also because this is "the biggest launch in Xbox history." Get it now? This humongous Xbox One isn't just for show, either: gamers that pledge their gamertags online at Microsoft's One Source site, in-person at the stunt console or on Xbox Live will work towards unlocking rewards like a free Xbox One console and other special "experiences." We're not sure what that latter bit's about -- perhaps a giant statue of Steve Ballmer to float down the Thames? But if you're counting down the days to November 22nd, chances are you'll want in on this fabricated fun.

The Xbox One's launch is moving ever closer, but we still have yet to see many of itsvaunted software features running live in the wild. While there are a number of stories about why that is (unfinished / buggy software, licensing issues etc.), this video taken on a dev kit shows the console's "Snap" multitasking feature at work. Posted by Game On Daily, the video (embedded after the break) shows a user navigating through websites using Internet Explorer on a side window while taking a break from Killer Instinct. The description says it's from an Xbox One devkit, and it's not clear how recent the software build shown is -- according to Microsoft's Albert Penello it's an old build, games no longer get squished and current builds are "way faster." Things seem to work quickly and smoothly, flashing from the game, to the browser playing a YouTube video, to the dashboard and back again, although the game is unceremoniously squashed to the side.
For a more polished and packaged impression of what multitasking can do, there's also the demo video recently posted by Machinima (also included after the break), showing its "wingman" feature in action. A Snap feature that's apparently optimized for certain titles including Dead Rising 3, it brings relevant game tips and info to the TV screen while you play, and can be controlled by voice commands with Kinect. We'll have to get our hands on the final hardware to see what this feature brings to real life gaming experiences, so for now these videos will have to do.
