With only two weeks until the Xbox One hits the shelves, Microsoft's marketing blitz continues with a 12-minute video demonstration of its next-gen console in action. Xbox executives Yusuf Mehdi and Marc Whitten highlight some of Kinect's new features, showing how users can switch to their personalized dashboard using just their voice, or use its 1080p camera to engage in a live Skype video call. We're also treated to some real-world examples of the Xbox One's snappy multitasking features, which we first saw in the "Meet Xbox One" video late last month, reinforcing the speed at which the system can switch between the dashboard and a paused game (in this case Forza Motorsport 5). These features, of course, are just a few of the several fascinating abilities we got to witness this week -- you can digest it all right here.

November 9th, 2013, 00:25 Posted By: wraggster
The Xbox One's DRM policy reversal was unprecedented, and will have lasting impacts for the lifespan of Microsoft's next game console. When the console was originally announced on Microsoft's Redmond, Wash., campus back in May, conflicting reportsfrom Microsoft execs during interviews throughout the day portrayed the Xbox One's digital vision as a scrambled mess. Some execs said the console required an online check-in once every 24 hours; others mentioned different periods of time; some said you could sell used games "for a fee"; others said it wouldn't cost a thing. You get the idea -- there wasn't a clear message, and the reaction from the most vocal of consumers was overwhelmingly negative.
Microsoft Senior Director of Product Management Albert Penello lived through the saga. "I always have to be really careful what I say here," he said, prefacing his comments, clearly burnt by the experience earlier this year. Before saying anything else, Penello wanted to reiterate that Microsoft is wholesale committed to the console's current vision:"The thing I want to be super explicit about, because I do think people are worried about, is once we made the decision to go to physical disc security, we're not unwinding that decision. We're committed to the physical disc; we're committed to trading and loaning. This is my official: 'We're not going back on that.' I don't want anybody to think we 'got' them, and then tomorrow I'm gonna go back to the old stuff, 'cause that's not gonna happen."
All that said, Penello and the team at Microsoft haven't completely given up on the original vision of a digital future. And some of that vision is even still in the Xbox One arriving on November 22nd.

Microsoft's Xbox One will not be able to play even disc-based games on day one without a mandatory update to the system.
The $499 machine, which goes on sale November 22 worldwide, will require a patch not just for online services and apps, but also retail boxed games and other functions due to shipping with an outdated operating system.
"Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update," Microsoft's senior director of product management Albert Penello told Engadget.
When asked what consumers could with the console straight out the box, he replied: "Nothing. You need the day one update."
"A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn't have even been done," detailed Penello. "You're gonna need to take this update. It's not gonna be really an optional thing."
Microsoft's online services for the Xbox One have been the subject of scrutiny and criticism since they were first revealed at E3.
That disasterous showing forced the company to backtrack on a number of requirements, but the fact remains that the Xbox One is essentially a console that requires near-constant internet connection to function as it was originally designed.

November 8th, 2013, 23:08 Posted By: wraggster
The design director of Xbox One launch title Ryse: Son of Rome has said that gamers should stop fixating on the “non-issue” of game resolutions.
"People are kind of grasping onto things that are really non-issues. For us, it was far more important to have artwork that looked beautiful,” Patrick Esteves told TechRadar.”
"It's all apples and oranges. The part I'm more interested in is what people are going to do with the Cloud because that has far more implications on gameplay than resolution.
"Currently on your iPhone you take a picture and the picture is sent off into the cloud, it computes it using multiple computers, it ages you thirty years, and it sends you a picture back in 30 seconds that lets you know roughly how you're going to look when you're 70 years old. That is essentially like cloud functionality.
"Now imagine what we could do with games if we had that kind of focus. Maybe we can have ten thousand units on the screen. Ten thousand AI running around and fighting. That's the dream. If you can do 60fps on 720p with ten thousand enemies, that's awesome."
The comments echo those made yesterday by Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer, who claimed that “games should be defined by more than their framerate and resolution”.

Stephen Elop, the former Nokia boss reportedly in the running to replace Steve Ballmer as Microsoft CEO next year, is said to be thinking about selling the firm's Xbox business.
Elop would consider refocusing the company’s strategy on bringing Microsoft Office software to a host of mobile devices, reports Bloomberg. Elop's apparent idea is that by doing this, Microsoft could boost sales of Office rather than by using it to aid sales of Windows-based devices.
Part of this plan would involve preparing to switch off Microsoft's search engine Bing and consider selling strong businesses like games console brand Xbox if "they weren't critical to the company's strategy".
Elop would also probably cut jobs and lower budgets to create smaller teams, Bloomberg's sources stated. While at Nokia, Elop cut 40,000 jobs and reduced operating expenses by 50 per cent.
It was announced that Elop will transfer to Microsoft in 2014 following the news that Nokia's mobile phone business will be sold to Microsoft.
Ford CEO Alan Mulally is also said to be one of the Microsoft CEO candidates.

When Battlefield 4 hits the Xbox One, it will bring with it a few new Kinect options that make your own body movements part of the virtual firefight.
Most novel are the device's head-tracking capabilities. According to Polygon, if your Kinect senses your head tilting far enough to the left or right, your in-game character will mirror this action, carefully leaning out of cover to line up a shot (or have his or her fool head blown off). Voice commands are likewise supported, allowing players to call for more ammo, medical assistance or a ride from any characters currently driving a vehicle.
Though the Xbox One (and PS4) iteration of Battlefield 4 launches on November 19, the Xbox One itself won't debut until November 22. Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC versions of the game are currently available.

Come November 12, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and the rest of their black-clad New World Order cronies will wreak havoc in WWE 2K14, much as they did in WCW all those years ago.
Included in the pack are Nash, Hall, the "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Curt Hennig, Scott Steiner, Syxx and The Giant. Most of these wrestlers are already in WWE 2K14, but this DLC specifically adds their New World Order incarnations from the mid-to-late 90s. "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan is notably absent from the NWO DLC, but that's only because his NWO persona is available in WWE 2K14 by default.
The NWO pack will set you back $9, unless you have purchased the WWE 2K14season pass. In that case, the DLC (and the two other packs slated to follow over the next few months) are totally gratis.

A limited-edition white Xbox One console has sold for an astounding £5,000 (approximately $8,000) at auction following an intense bidding war that resulted in the console being pulled and relisted.
Originally put up for sale earlier this week, the console was donated to charity by an anonymous Microsoft employee, and is emblazoned with a unique Gamertag and the text "I Made This." The console's original auction was yanked after sellers noted "suspicious activity" among bidders, resulting in a secure buy-it-now relisting that subsequently sold for its £5,000 asking price.
Proceeds for the auction benefit GamesAid, a UK-based charity that helps disadvantaged and disabled children.

Slightly Mad Studios, the British development house perhaps best remembered for Need for Speed: Shift, is working on a new racing game calledProject Cars. Today the developer has announced three new platforms for the game: Xbox One, PS4 and SteamOS.
Project Cars, which was originally due to launch this year on PC and later on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U, has now been pushed back to Fall 2014. This delay also means that Xbox 360 and PS3 have been left by the wayside - those ports have been canceled - and so the updated platform list includes Xbox One, PS4, Wii U, PC and SteamOS.
The "Cars" in Project Cars stands for "community-assisted racing simulator," a nod to Project Cars'crowd-funded and community-driven development plan. Those who have committed cash to Slightly Mad Studios have had access to frequently-updated builds of Project Cars and have helped steer the game's progress since late 2011.

November 8th, 2013, 20:50 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft Senior Director of Product Management Albert Penello called the reveal of the Xbox One "the dark days," when the company didn't present a clear message to customers and it saw a wave of backlash to an all-digital, DRM-tuned console.
"I do feel like we never got a chance to have a rational conversation about what we were trying to do," Penello told Engadget.
When Microsoft revealed the Xbox One, it didn't have consistent answers to basic questions: Was it always on? Would it allow used games? Eventually, Microsoft announced Xbox One would require an internet connection onceevery day, and that didn't go over so well. Microsoft reversed its DRM features a few weeks later.
"Sometimes the customer just says, 'No. I look at it this way, I'm done, I've made up my mind,'" Penello said. "And we go, well, we've gotta fix it. It's not worth it. And that's where I think we were on the digital stuff. We'll get back to some of the cool stuff, and we have a lot of the cool stuff still in there."
Penello said Microsoft hasn't given up on a fully digital future. "We just think that's the way the future's gonna go," he said. "We may have been right. What we were wrong about was that it's just too soon. People just weren't ready to make that leap right away."

The Xbox One has eyes and ears in the living room, more observant and more attuned to the human voice than ever before. Its Kinect camera can track multiple skeletons (usually inside people) and study your face for a post-workout pulse. It will understand you when you talk to it, and stop listening if you wish. And yes, you can unplug it.
The new Kinect camera is not so sophisticated, however, as to detect the tinge of awkwardness that comes with press demos – this one in a San Francisco loft reserved for demonstrating the Xbox One as a platform. I sit on a couch between Xbox's Corporate VP, Marc Whitten, and Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer Yusuf Mehdi, who will show me a product intended for a living room, quite unlike the cold approximation we find ourselves in. I face a giant television as they walk me through the system's standout features, never wavering in politeness and concision. They probably wince invisibly the few times a vocal command fails to register, because goddammit that's probably going into the article, isn't it?
The Kinect quickly recognizes Whitten by his face and signs him into his Xbox profile. It does the same for Mehdi, and now they're both signed in on the system. Either one can summon their personal content by speaking, and the Xbox One will know which items to roll out without having to ask, "Sorry, which one of you said that?"

Back in September, at a Microsoft company meeting, cloud-based games streaming was demonstrated using a copy of Halo 4, which was seen running on a PC and a Windows Phone with attached Xbox 360 controller. Albert Penello, lead planner on Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Kinect, said the technology is simultaneously "really cool and really problematic" to pull off.
"It's really cool and really problematic, all at the same time, insofar as it's really super cool if you happen to have the world's most awesome internet connection," Penello told Polygon. "It works way better than you'd expect it to. So managing quality of service, the tolerance people will have for it being crappy. Can you imagine, in this day and age, with the bad information around, and we can't control the quality of that experience and make sure it's good, or have to tell people they can't do it?"
Penello went on to say this specific demonstration was "a grand experiment" but it's all a matter of improving the Xbox Live network before going forward with any kind of feature launch. Penello also didn't rule out the possibility of streaming Xbox One games. "I know we did a lot of work behind it, and we said this is one of the things where the network just has to get better before we can do it. When that happens, you're going to have a really interesting conversation around that, can I actually run Xbox One games that way as well."
While backwards compatibility is clearly on Microsoft's mind now, that wasn't always the case. When the Xbox One was announced back in May, it was originally going to do away with backwards compatibility entirely. Don Mattrick, who was Xbox head honcho at the time, then famously said, "If you're backwards compatible, you're really backwards." Mattrick wasn't at Microsoft much longer after that, taking over as CEO of Zynga just a few weeks later.

While the Xbox One reboot of Killer Instinct will launch with local and online multiplayer modes, players will need to wait until Microsoft launches all of its planned Season One content before they can grapple with AI-controlled opponents in a forthcoming Arcade mode.
The series' traditional Arcade mode -- which pits players against all of the game's fighters in a series of one-on-one matches -- will unlock after the full roster of eight Season One characters is released, Microsoft Studios game designer Daniel Fornace revealed in an interview with OXM this week. The game will include six characters when it premieres on November 22, and two additional characters will round out the Season One lineup post-launch.
As consolation for Arcade mode's omission, players can beat up on endless waves of CPU opponents in a score-based Survival mode when Killer Instincthits the Xbox Live Marketplace as a free-to-play download later this month.

Call of Duty: Ghosts launch-day shipments were down on last year's game, Black Ops 2, and the console transition is to blame, Activision has said.
The publisher confirmed earlier today that retailers has spent $1 billion on Call of Duty: Ghosts stock for last week's launch - as oppose to using actual sales figures as it has done in previous years. Even this figure, however, is down on last year, and the publisher is blaming the volatility of the console transition.
"As we have said for more than a year now, console transition years a volatile and hard to predict and this year's proving no different," said CFO Dennis Durkin during a financials call Wednesday.
"Today we announced that we have shipped into retail more than $1 billion of Call of Duty: Ghosts globally on day-one, based on an average wholesale price. As expected, due to the console transition and digital distribution, this number is down versus last year," he added.
Durkin went on to predict, "This year, the sell-through curve will be different than in past years, due to the multiple launches of new hardware later in the month, and more days between our launch, and the high volume Black Friday at the end of the month."
Speaking earlier today, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said it was "too early to assess" sell-through to consumers, but suggested the game's release on Tuesday came at a time "when the franchise has never been more popular".
In CVG's Call of Duty Ghosts review critic Nick Cowen calls Activision's latest series instalment "fun and familiar". We collated current-gen and PS4 verdicts from across the games press in our Call of Duty Ghosts review round-up.

Canadian marketing head says new console is outpacing Xbox 360 preorders 2-to-1, no worries about a Red Ring of Death repeat
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
As evidenced by the 40-foot console constructed in a Vancouver parking lot recently, Microsoft expects Xbox One to be big. Speaking with GamesIndustry International at the X13 showcase event in Toronto yesterday, Microsoft Canada's Xbox director of marketing Craig Flannagan put the November 22 launch into perspective.
"I've been here for the launch of Xbox 360. I was here for the launch of Kinect. This is far and away the biggest launch we've ever done," Flannagan said. "It's the most hardware we've ever produced. It's the most we've ever pre-sold. We're preselling a little over 2-to-1 from what we did with Xbox 360. The momentum on launch has been really good. And we didn't have a 40-foot console at the launch of the 360, either."
As for how Xbox One will fare against the PlayStation 4 and Wii U, Flannagan pointed to Xbox Live and the company's focus on social integration as two differentiating factors that will give it the edge. He also said he was proud of the game lineup, saying Xbox One exclusives walked out of E3 with twice the awards of both competitors.
"Xbox One is going to start ahead, in terms of the experience we can deliver," Flannagan said. "And because we're built for the future, we're going to stay ahead. I think there is not a better experience you can buy this holiday, and there will not be a time this generation where there's a better experience you can buy than Xbox One...And it's probably going to be a pretty long generation. We're probably here for a while because we're built for the future. This is a console that will last you, conservatively a decade, if I had to put a bet down today."
The idea of a launch Xbox One lasting a decade brings to mind the Red Ring of Death and Microsoft's notoriously unreliable Xbox 360 launch hardware. When asked if he's heard consumers expressing concerns about the Xbox One's durability, Flannagan said, "Not really."
"We feel great about where the hardware is at right now," Flanagan said. "Our yields are good. It's allowing us to produce more consoles than we ever have for a launch. We feel great about how the hardware is performing."
While Flannagan expects the hardware purchased this month to keep running years into the future, he doesn't expect it to offer the same experience. Just as the Xbox One went through multiple different dashboards and overhauled feature sets over the course of the last eight years, so too will the Xbox One evolve.
"Much like 360, Xbox One's not going to look a whole lot five years from now like it does on November 22, 2013. I don't know where it's going to go, but that's kind of fun because we're built for the future. We do have a connection; we can change what things look like and how it performs."

South Korea's Game Rating Board classified Peggle 2 for PS4 and Xbox 360 this week, as well as Xbox One. The puzzler follow-up is set to arrive on Xbox One first, and there's no indication that's changed, even though it won't make the console's launch this month.
However, these ratings suggest it could trickle onto other platforms in the near future. PopCap has already said Peggle 2 will, much like its predecessor, be ported to "as many other platforms as possible."
PopCap's sequel is due next month on Xbox One. According to our PAX Prime preview, it doesn't ricochet too far from the tried-and-tested Peggle formula, but it still "looks like a game you'll play until your thumbs drop off."
