Microsoft hopes to make a small profit on each Xbox Oneconsole sold at launch this November.
Xbox chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi said at the Citi Global Technology Conference yesterday: "We're looking to be breakeven or low margin at worst on hardware and then we make money selling additional games, the Xbox Live service and other capabilities on top.
"And as we can cost reduce our box as we've done with 360, we'll do that to continue to price reduce and get even more competitive with our offering."
Mehdi also said Xbox One is currently in full production after Microsoft boosted the system's CPU from 1.6 GHz to 1.75 GHz.
"From a market demand perspective we've been sold out on pre-orders of Xbox for couple of weeks now," Mehdi continued. "We've built more than we've built for an Xbox launch. We are on track to have the biggest launch we've ever done by a wide margin for a console. I expect there will be multiple millions of people enjoying Xbox through the holiday."
Microsoft said last month that Xbox One's launch had been delayed to 2014 in eight European countries due to Kinect localisation issues rather than supply problems. Xbox One will now launch in 13 markets this November priced at £430 / €500 / $500. The Xbox One release date will be announced later today, a pair of UK retailers suggested this morning.

Microsoft will continue to support Xbox 360 long after Xbox One launches this November.
Xbox chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi said at the Citi Global Technology Conference yesterday: "If you look at Xbox 360 that platform [has] lasted for seven to eight years and it's going to go for another three years. It's incredibly profitable now in the tail."
Mehdi went on to assure consumers not yet ready to jump on the next-gen bandwagon that there will be plenty of new games released for Xbox 360.
"We are going to continue to invest in Xbox 360 and the two devices can work in concert," he said. "So it isn't just like the day we ship Xbox One, Xbox 360 won't work, we will continue to support it. In fact, we are going to ship over 100 new games on Xbox 360, so you will still be able to play your games, just not on the same exact box."
Mehdi also said Xbox One is currently in full production after Microsoft boosted the system's CPU from 1.6 GHz to 1.75 GHz.
Xbox One will launch in 13 markets this November priced at £430 / €500 / $500. The Xbox One release date will be announced later today, a pair of UK retailers suggested this morning.

Microsoft senior director Albert Penello says "that has to be part of the experience" eventually, along with subsidized console promotions
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft scrapped its original plans for "family sharing" Xbox One games back when it reversed the system's original DRM scheme, but the company expects to see it return, along with trading of downloaded games, at some point in the future. That's according to aGameSpot interview with Xbox senior director Albert Penello conducted at last week's PAX Prime event in Seattle, Washington.
When asked about reselling digital games, Penello said, "We were trying to implement the ability to trade [and] loan digital games with your friends, which is something that no one else was doing," Penello said. "I believe, in retrospect that people have calmed down and gone back and actually looked at what we said, people are starting to understand, 'Wow, they did want actually to allow me to loan and trade' which other digital ecosystems don't want to do. And so, yeah, I think we need to do that. That has to be part of the experience. Right now, we're focused on launch and we switched the program back to discs, because that's what customers wanted. "
Penello added that the "family sharing" feature, which would have let users share their license rights to play an Xbox One game with up to 10 family member accounts on any Xbox One system, was a good idea, and one Microsoft will revisit "when the time is right."
Penello was also asked about possible partnerships with TV providers to get subsidized Xbox One systems into homes at a smaller upfront cost to consumers. Last year, Microsoft offered Xbox 360 systems for $99 if customers committed to a two-year Xbox Live Gold subscription.
"I think there will be a time and place to bring that back," Penello said. "I think at launch, most people are saving up and they're going...they want in. The subsidized model really makes a lot of sense towards the end of the life. People are more price sensitive. They are more cost conscious. It's a model I like; I'm sure we'll bring it back. But not right now."

Kinect being at the heart of Xbox One will lead to its eventual acceptance among even its most ardent critics, Microsoft believes.
That Kinect was an optional extra with Xbox 360 meant that its implementation was sporadic and unreliable. The fact that Kinect 2.0 shipping with every Xbox One eradicates that issue, Xbox One planning and marketing director Albert Penello told OXM.
"One of the biggest challenges with Kinect is that the people who are the most vocal against it, often haven't used it," he said. “It is the constant struggle of being the people who conceptualise these things. And it's hard to break past that.
"We're aware with Kinect – everything [critics have] said, particularly outside of the US, with smaller homes and things like that, where people have to move furniture and so on. But with the new Kinect, I don't believe [those things] are going to be an issue.
"I firmly believe that the experiences will sell. If it's there, now that everybody can rely on it, now that we're not burdening developers [with the task of making] trade-offs with games that use it, that means more people are going to experience it.
"I think they're going to discover the same thing that everyone else discovers, which is, you're going to use it. I mean, people just went straight to some flailing-arm Halo idea, which is never going to happen, but now that, you know, it's always there, I think there are some really cool ways it can be used."

Chart-topping PS3 thriller Heavy Rain was turned down by Microsoft over concerns about child abduction causing controversy for the publisher.
As reported by Digital Spy, Quantic Dream’s CEO and the creator of Heavy Rain, David Cage, said the publisher was “scared” of the controversy it might have caused.
“We had a very long talk and they loved Fahrenheit, and they really wanted to do something with us,” said Cage, during his talk at a BAFTA games lecture in London this week. “They got scared by the fact that Heavy Rain was about kids being kidnapped, and they said, ‘This is an issue, we want to change it’. Well, we could have kidnapped cats, it would be a different experience!
“For me, that was a very interesting signal. It was like, you know what, I don't think we can work together, because you don't understand what I'm to achieve here.”

Computing firm plans to attract mobile developers with cross-platform options
Microsoft is considering an HTML5 development solution for the Xbox One that would also make it easier for the company to attract developers to its Windows Phone platform.
Yesterday the company purchased Nokia's Devices and Services division – once the world leader in mobile phone sales – for £4.6 billion, and recently announced it was lowering the annual fee for Windows Phone development.
Taken together these moves reveal a company that is dead-set on becoming a major rival to Apple and Google in the mobile phone sector.
In a conference call with investors, Microsoft's EVP of operating systems Terry Myerson said making HTML5 available to developers across all the company's platforms was a big part of its plans.
"We want to offer the opportunity to build either HTML5 applications, or native applications that span all of those devices, enabling them to reach segments of users on those devices, users on a gaming console, and provide them with very unique opportunities to monetize their application investments," said Myerson.

The Xbox One will launch worldwide on November 22nd.
Microsoft’s next-gen console will be available in 13 territories including the UK, USA, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand and Spain.
The firm’s VP of Xbox marketing Yusuf Mehdi said the company had sold out of its pre-order supply “faster than at any other time in our history”.
He also revealed Microsoft would be making an additional number of Xbox One’s available for pre-order.
The Xbox One launch will compete directly with Sony’s PS4, which is set to release on November 15th in North America, and November 29th in Europe. This puts the Xbox One right in the middle of Sony’s launch dates.

The Xbox One will also arrive in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand and Spain on November 22nd.
To mark the date, Microsoft has also made extra Xbox One Day One Editions available to pre-order at retail.

Stock of Microsoft's Xbox One Day One Edition is now running low in the UK, a survey of UK retailers suggests. Many chains are now sold out of the console's Day One Edition, while stock of the standard version (which does not include the free FIFA 14 download) is not guaranteed for launch.£614.98.
GAME is only stocking the console's Day One Edition in a £614.98 bundle with Call of Duty: Ghosts' Prestige Edition. The special version of COD: Ghosts costs £179.99 on its own and includes a 1080p HD digital camera. It's a similar situation at ShopTo, where the Day One Edition is available only in a number of bundles. These range in price from £489 (includes Battlefield 4 and £15 Microsoft Store credit) up to £575 (includes Ryse, Watch Dogs, £10 Store credit and an extra Xbox One controller). We've found just four chains with the Day One Edition still in stock outside of a bundle - Currys, GameStop, Blockbuster and Asda - the latter two of which require a £20 deposit. You can also still reserve a Day One Edition through Microsoft itself.Amazon sold out of the Day One Edition a few weeks ago. Like GAME, you can pre-order a standard edition of the console but there is no guarantee of when it will arrive.Zavvi appears to be in the same boat, with no guarantee of launch day delivery for consoles pre-ordered after 19th August. Very shows the same message for orders placed after 23rd August.Tesco - which had stock up until last weekend - is now sold out, as is Toys R Us.Attempting to pre-order the console at Sainsbury's now brings up a removed item page, suggesting it has sold out there, too.Microsoft has yet to set a UK release date for Xbox One - we only know that it will be sometime in November.PlayStation 4 has been effectively sold out in the UK since 6th August. No retailer has been able to guarantee launch stock since that date.

The Xbox One reputation system will not incorporate information from Xbox 360 users, meaning previous troublemakers will have a chance to make a fresh start.
As part of an IGN Q&A session, chief Xbox One platform architect Marc Whitten was asked whether everyone's reputation will carry over the two systems.
"We will not carry over any of the 360 reputation scores into the new Xbox One reputation system," Whitten replied. "The majority of members will start fresh at the 'good' player level."
Whitten also made it clear, however, that the more recent troublemakers will not receive this privilege. They will instead begin with a "needs work" reputation level.
"We will be working with the Xbox Live enforcement team that has identified a small subset of members that have recently had enforcement actions taken against them", Whitten explained.
"This will give those members a chance to prove they can participate on Live fairly, and are not automatically placed in the 'Avoid Me' classification where things like SmartMatch filtering will affect them."
Microsoft first discussed the Xbox One's 'advanced troll detection' in July, with Microsoft's senior product manager Mike Lavin explaining how it worked.
"There'll be very good things that happen to people that just play their games and are good participants," Lavin told OXM. "And you'll start to see some effects if you continue to play bad or, or harass other people en masse. You'll probably end up starting to play more with other people that are more similar to you."

Despite acknowledging a number of "challenges" in the run-up to this November's Xbox One launch, Xbox Live director of programming Larry 'Major Nelson' Hyrb insists the console hasn't been rushed to market.
Microsoft said last month that Xbox One's launch had been delayed to 2014 in eight European countries due to Kinect localisation issues rather than supply problems.
Xbox One will now launch in 13 markets this November, although Kinect voice commands will initially only work in five countries, while the console appears unlikely to support external storage upon release.
Responding to suggestions that Microsoft has rushed the console to market, Major Nelson said on Reddit: "The Xbox One program has been in development for years, so calling it 'Rushed' is incorrect.
"Did we have a few challenges between May and August? Sure. But we are working on our own schedule - not any one else's. At Gamescom, every game in the Xbox booth was running on final Xbox One hardware. Every. Single. One. That would paint a very different take on the being 'rushed.'"
Xbox One is targeted for a "late November" release, according to the terms and conditions section of an upcoming promo campaign for which PepsiCo and Microsoft have partnered to give away an Xbox One every two minutes. The Xbox One price has been set at £430 / €500 / $500.

Xbox One will not require third party developers to release demo versions of their digital games.
So confirmed chief Xbox One platform architect Marc Whitten to IGN in a Q&A on the various nuances of the new platform.
Games released for Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade digital store were required to have a demo version accompanying the full product, which meant gamers could rely on the option to try out any XBLA game before making a purchase. But this stipulation has been dropped for Xbox One.
"Not all games will have demos like Xbox Live arcade games have had on Xbox 360," confirmed Whitten. "That said, we are going to work on lots of ways to make it easy for you to find and try new games on the service," he added, without going into specifics.
Whitten also confirmed that, for the "majority" of players, the Xbox One reputation system will not incorporate information from Xbox 360, meaning previous troublemakers will have a chance to make a fresh start.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare will forego a single-player campaign to focus on multiplayer-only gameplay, PopCap has confirmed.
A spin-off of PopCap's popular tower defense series and revealed at E3 in June, Garden Warfare is a third-person shooter headed "exclusively first" to Xbox 360 and Xbox One in spring 2014, followed by PC.
Developer PopCap games has told Shacknews that the game will focus on multiplayer gameplay, adding to the list of upcoming multiplayer-only titles which already includes Destiny and Titanfall.
Creative director Justin Wiebe said, "We definitely want to build on the game once it's launched. We're definitely taking a cue from Plants vs Zombies 2. Using DLC and new content updates, we want to keep players engaged in the long haul."
The Xbox One version will retail at $39.99, with the Xbox 360 and PC versions promised to be $10 cheaper.
The Xbox One version will, however, feature an exclusive Boss modewhich lets you control Dr. Zomboss or Crazy Dave, and will use Kinect or SmartGlass to give players a top-down view of the battlefield, allowing them to use abilities like health drops, revive stations and artillery strikes.

It should be obvious by now that Microsoft is doubling-down on sports apps. The company recently confirmed that ESPN is coming to Xbox One, and it inked a dealwith the NFL to bring fantasy football to both Xbox and Windows. Until now, details have been scarce, except that Microsoft's partnership with the NFL would include not just fantasy games, but also Surface apps coaches could use on the sidelines.
Finally, though, Microsoft is giving us a proper walk-through: it's showing off ESPN and NFL for Xbox One, NFL for Windows 8, and not one, but two coaching applications. And according to company officials, that's just the beginning: David Jurenka, Director of Sports for Xbox Entertainment Studios, tells us his group would also like to port over Yahoo and ESPN's fantasy football apps, ideally sometime in 2014. In the meantime, those NFL and ESPN apps will hit the Xbox One in November, around the time it goes on sale, but we've got a sneak peek after the break. Oh, and even if you don't plan on upgrading, you might still want to pay attention: NFL for Xbox 360 and Windows 8 are both available now.

Microsoft doubles number of potential players from 360
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Details of the Xbox One's controller have been published by Microsoft, revealing that the console will double the number of potential concurrent players to eight. Previously both the 360 and original Xbox supported just four.
Revealed via the controller's official product page, the news indicates that there are likely to be some games in the works which are very much focused on group play. This certainly fits with Microsoft's plans for Kinect, which is able to identify several different players in a room via facial recognition. Kinect will also pick up controllers via IR, meaning that player profiles can be properly assigned to the correct controller automatically.
Over 40 improvements have been made to Microsoft iconic device since the last generation, including an increased wireless range of 30 feet, new haptic feedback in the triggers and an improved D-pad.

When it comes to console transparency, Dennis Fong says Sony has been closed "almost to the point of ignorance"
[h=3]Raptr[/h]
The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are roughly a couple months away from launch, but many still aren't sure what to expect from the next-gen systems. One such person is Raptr CEO Dennis Fong, who toldGamesIndustry International recently that "it's just too early to tell" how the new consoles will work with the community-focused cross-platform gaming service.
[h=3]Fong's pro gamer past[/h]Known as Thresh in the competitive Quake and Doom scenes, Fong was a pro gamer from 1995 until his "retirement" in 2001. At the time, he didn't believe competitive gaming was a viable career field, but a couple things have since changed his mind: free-to-play games and livestreaming.
The livestreaming helps educate people on the games, which they can then try out on their own, which increases the player base, which makes the whole prospect of professional gamers more viable.
"For a sport to really be considered a sport, you need spectators," Fong said. "And for spectators to appreciate what people are doing, they have to really understand the game itself."
He added, "Excitement is infectious and the low barrier of entry for free-to-play means new people can try it out and get right into it," Fong said.
Whatever policies the two companies adopt regarding their online service's player profiles, Fong suggested they could represent Raptr's biggest strength or greatest challenge when it comes to the new consoles. One of Raptr's primary functions is to provide its 18 million users with a cross-platform profile that collects all of their Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Steam achievements and trophies in the same place, something which is only possible if the platform holders have set their user profiles up to be somehow accessible by a third party.
With Microsoft and Sony increasingly embracing social functions, live-streaming, and even things like self-publishing for independent developers, there seems to be a trend toward increased openness of all kinds in the console world. One might think that bodes well for Raptr, but Fong isn't about to assume their cooperation.
"It seems like it would be a no-brainer, but you just never know with big companies," Fong said. "Especially big companies that are going through massive upheaval, which I think both PlayStation and Xbox to some extent are going through that right now."
"I think overall Xbox has been way more progressive and open, just in general."
Dennis Fong
If history is any indication, Fong has reason to be optimistic about Xbox One.
"I think overall Xbox has been way more progressive and open, just in general," Fong said.
The executive said he'd met most of the key people behind Xbox Live, and said Microsoft as a whole tends to be more open, likely as a result of its history in the PC platform. Microsoft also provides Raptr with direct feeds of data to help them streamline the integration of Xbox Live information into the service.
"PlayStation on the other hand, has been very, very closed, almost to the point of ignorance, in terms of trying to control every little thing that goes through PlayStation and what their users see," Fong said. "So getting them to release any kind of data, user profile data and such, has been a lot like pulling teeth."
In the past, Fong said Raptr dealt with Sony through various committees including people from around the world. The result was a very slow process in which nothing ever got done, he said. Fong also chalked it up in part to Japanese Internet culture, which he described as different from the rest of the world, "less open, more controlling."
Despite that, there may be hope for increased cooperation with Sony on the PS4. Fong noted that Sony seems to have given its American arm, particularly Gaikai, more influence regarding the system's online elements this time around, "so it definitely seems more open."
One platform that seems a long shot for full support from Raptr is the Wii U. Fong said he's had discussions with Nintendo, but that the company's audience skews considerably younger than Raptr's target demographic. Where Raptr wants to increase the social connectivity of gamers, Fong said Nintendo has almost been discouraging interactions with strangers, pointing to the deliberately clunky Wii friend code system as evidence.

"Did we have a few challenges between May and August? Sure"
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft's Larry Hryb, better known as Major Nelson, has defended the Xbox One against the accusation that its development was rushed.
"The Xbox One program has been in development for years, so calling it 'rushed' is incorrect," he posted onReddit, during discussions about the console launching without support for external storage.
"Did we have a few challenges between May and August? Sure. But we are working on our own schedule - not any one else's. At Gamescom, every game in the Xbox booth was running on final Xbox One hardware. Every. Single. One. That would paint a very different take on the being 'rushed.'"
While Sony has announced the release dates for the PlayStation 4, Microsoft has yet to commit, leading industry figureheads like EA's Peter Moore to comment that they need to "cough up the date."
Industry sources currently suggest that the Xbox One will go on sale a week before the PlayStation 4.
