Many of the most ardent Call of Duty players sit in what Infinity Ward terms the "casual game space".
These consumers play Call of Duty a lot, and sometimes it's all they play, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin told OXM.
Explaining why he doesn't expect the arrival of new console hardware to have much of an impact on Call of Duty's audience, Rubin said: "We have an enormous amount of players who are more in the casual game space, but they play a lot.
"It's kind of a weird, ironic thing to say. They aren't hardcore gamers, or even gamers, but they play Call of Duty every night. And those guys are going to continue to play regardless of platform. So I think not only will we continue to engage with that existing player base, but we'll take next gen and see how far we can go with it."
Likening Call of Duty to a sport, Rubin also told OXM that Infinity Ward "can't change too many of the core rules" if it wants to keep hold of the series' existing audience, from the casual players mentioned above through to pro gamers.
"There is the obvious truth that if this were football, and next year they decided we only want seven players a side and you can use your hands, I don't think people would want to go to many of those games.
"We can play a lot with the outside of how that works, and it's things like character customisation, making the movement through that world better, making the world itself more interesting, adding the new modes, adding the new dynamic maps.
"So there's still I think a lot to do," Rubin added. "Any time we ship a game - and this a non-Call of Duty statement, this is [applicable to] any dev you've ever talked to - is there's always a ton of features they wish they could have gotten to, before they shipped. So I think we'll always be able to bring new and interesting stuff. It's literally that we're just trying to make a better game than we made last time."
Publisher Activision has confirmed a Call of Duty: Ghosts release date of November 5 on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC. The game will also be a launch title on Xbox One and PS4 later in the month.

At August’s Gamescom conference Sony Computer Entertainment’s Andrew House gloated that “while others have shifted their message and changed their story, we were consistent in maintaining policies and a model that is fair and in tune with consumer desires”.The line garnered some laughs, but it ignored the very real effects of Microsoft’s responses to its dialogues with gamers over the months since Xbox One’s announcement. The company has worked hard to be seen to match Sony on every level, and in some respects may have even surpassed its competitor.“I think when you create a vision of the future, you paint the vision of the future that you are most excited about,” says Microsoft’s Phil Harrison. “But we got clear feedback that some of the things we were proposing were perhaps a little too far into the future. So we changed. We took feedback from the community; we changed our plans. We think that’s a good thing.”Microsoft’s policy reversals have been dramatic. Following a disastrous E3, it immediately cut Xbox One’s insistence on a permanent Internet connection and 24-hour check-in for digital titles, as well as the system’s region locking and restrictions on lending and reselling games. Negative feedback to an always-on Kinect – made especially troublesome in light of Microsoft’s cooperation with the NSA’s Prism programme – meant Kinect would no longer be required, even if you had no choice but to buy one with the console.

The disparate ecosystems of Windows Phone, Microsoft's traditional desktop and theXbox 360 left a generation of Redmond loyals aching for a more unified front. Now Dell seems convinced that one is on the way: according to a blurb on the company's online store, Windows 8 apps will be capable of being "run on and synced" to the Xbox One. "Now your phone, desktop, tablet and TV can all give you a unified web and entertainment experience," it says. Although this aligns well with some of thecompany's goals, we'd still take it with a grain of salt -- Microsoft has said in the past that the Windows 8 apps won't be cross-compatible with the Xbox One without extra tweaking. It's not clear if the Dell statement is a misunderstanding, or merely a suggestion that app data will sync across devices to provide a more seamless experience. Still, we've reached out to the company for clarification, and certainly wouldn't scoff better cross-platform support in either form.

Microsoft has announced that its Games for Gold programme is now "an ongoing benefit" for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox 360.
Announced at E3 in June as a limited-time promotion, Games with Gold gives XBL subscribers two free games to keep each month, with new titles made available on the 1st and 16th.
In the months since, Microsoft says over 120 million hours have been played with Games with Gold titles. These have included Fable 3, Defense Grid: The Awakening, Assassin's Creed 2, Crackdown, Dead Rising 2 and DR2 prologue Case Zero, Magic 2013, Rainbow Six Vegas, Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes and most recently Halo 3.
Despite switching focus to Xbox One in the run-up to the console's November 22 release, Xbox chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi said in September that the company will continue to support Xbox 360 for years to come.
"If you look at Xbox 360 that platform [has] lasted for seven to eight years and it's going to go for another three years. It's incredibly profitable now in the tail," he said. "We are going to continue to invest in Xbox 360 and the two devices can work in concert. So it isn't just like the day we ship Xbox One, Xbox 360 won't work, we will continue to support it. In fact, we are going to ship over 100 new games on Xbox 360, so you will still be able to play your games, just not on the same exact box."

Sony's PlayStation might've outsold the Xbox 360 in September, but Microsoft wants to make sure that people know its system is still the number one selling console in the United States. The Xbox 360 has sold 1.6 million units in 2013 within the US and 80 million units worldwide since its launch in 2005.
September software sales for the Xbox 360 reached $401.2 million, the highest of any console in the US according to NPD numbers. The top five games on NPD's September 2013 chart are all on 360: Grand Theft Auto V, Madden 25, NBA 2K14, Diablo III, and FIFA 14.
November 22 marks the worldwide launch of Microsoft's next console, the Xbox One. The company says preorders for the new console are ahead of Xbox 360 preorders in the same time period.
"Looking ahead to Xbox One launch, we continue to see overwhelming demand for the console with pre-orders for Xbox One selling out quicker than any previous Xbox release; Xbox One pre-orders continue to outpace Xbox 360 pre-orders in the same time period. While we remain on track to honor all pre-order commitments, we do expect to sell every Xbox One we deliver to retail this holiday," said the company in its release.

Turtle Beach extends its hardware agreement with Microsoft, but its headsets are pushed back until 2014
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
[h=3]Turtle Beach[/h]
Gaming audio accessory manufacturer Turtle Beach has revealed that Microsoft will not release its Xbox One headset adapter for third-party headsets until early 2014. The new comes from Turtle Beach's announcement that it has extended its partnership with Microsoft to create accessories for the Xbox One. Turtle Beach has two headsets, the XO Four and the XO Seven, that will launch for the Xbox One in the first quarter of 2014.
For the Xbox One, Microsoft has a proprietary data port that's not compatible with most Xbox 360 headsets. Turtle Beach confirmed to CVG that Microsoft's headset adapter will also be needed for new headsets. The adapter will be included with every Turtle Beach headset.
"We are very excited about the coming Xbox One launch and expect to continue to work closely with Microsoft to deliver the best audio products and capabilities for the Xbox One through 2014 and 2015," said Turtle Beach CEO Juergen Stark. "I know we will excite consumers with our new headsets in the coming months and I am looking forward to the launch of the XO Four and XO Seven in early 2014."

The once limited-time Games With Gold offer on Xbox 360 is to remain a permanent feature.
GWG mirrors PlayStation Plus in that it offers free access to select titles for users who are subscribed to Xbox Live. The good news is that it looks like the promotion is sticking around for good.
“At E3 2013, we launched Games with Gold as a limited-time program to thank our Xbox Live Gold members,” Microsoft stated. “Within that short period of time, we've seen an overwhelming response, with more than 120 million hours played with Games with Gold titles.
“Today, as a part of the ‘Week of Xbox Live’ we're excited to announce that we are making Games with Gold an ongoing benefit for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox 360.
“Whether they are blockbuster AAA or popular arcade titles, Games with Gold continues to offer a diverse mix of games with two free Xbox 360 titles a month – yours to keep and at no additional cost. According to recent surveys, 97 per cent of participating members have given their stamp of approval for Games with Gold, and we're excited to continue bringing you great games every month as part of our ongoing commitment to providing great value on Xbox 360.”
There’s so far not been any suggestion of a similar offer making its way to Xbox One.

October 18th, 2013, 23:08 Posted By: wraggster
Xbox 360 owners are now able to buy a digital version of Grand Theft Auto V via Xbox Live.
The title appears in the Games On Demand section and costs £49.99 in the UK and $59.99 in the US.
The big question, however, is whether the game will suffer from the same technical issues that plagued the digital version available on PSN.
Shortly after the release of GTA V in September reports arrived suggesting that the PSN version suffered from the same technical issues that were plaguing users who chose to install both discs of the physical Xbox 360 game on their HDD contrary to Rockstar’s recommendations.
The problem was believed to stem from the title being designed to stream information simultaneously from both the disc and HDD. Installing both discs effectively limited the bandwidth through which the game could load assets.
By not having access to a disc, the PSN release was thought to suffer for the same reason. And logic dictates that this won’t be any different for the XBL digital version.
Rockstar has never officially acknowledged the issue and it should be noted that reports from users varied from those claiming to witness significant performance issues to those saying they were experiencing no problems whatsoever.

Gamers will soon be able to convert all their loose change into Xbox Live credit in the US.
Polygon reports that digital payment company Rixty is working with Microsoft to allow consumers to use Coinstar vending machines to receive credit for Microsoft’s console marketplace.
Users will be able to claim back either XBL Gift Cards worth between $5 and $100 or XBL Gold Memberships.
"Rixty is already an established alternative payment platform for online games, and we're proud to be selected as one of the few approved Xbox Live Gift Card and Gold Membership wholesalers," Rixty CEO Ted Sorom stated.
"By expanding our channels to non-traditional resellers such as loyalty and incentive programs, we're giving these partners access to lucrative new products and consumers more convenient ways to obtain their favourite entertainment content."

Multiplayer titles on Microsoft’s next generation Xbox will be backed up by cloud technology
Xbox One is to have dedicated servers for all multiplayer titles, Microsoft has confirmed.
Speaking to Polygon, a Microsoft representative said the servers are part of Xbox Live Compute – the next-gen console’s cloud service.
Furthermore, Microsoft director of marketing Albert Penello told forum users on NeoGAF that all developers will have dedicated servers, cloud processing and storage for saves.
“If you want to do dedicated servers on other platforms, you have to prop them yourself,” Penello wrote. “But on Xbox One, while developers can choose to use their own methods, we make it available to everyone.”
“We offer Xbox Live Compute to all Xbox One developers for free,” an Xbox rep later confirmed to Polygon.
Microsoft is making a major push towards cloud services for game development. The introduction of Windows Azure, a service to stream social and fully-fledged core games through the OS, is one service that the software maker is using to bring developers over to its platforms.
Earlier this year, Microsoft’s Xbox incubation and prototyping group manager Jeff Henshaw said that cloud technology makes Xbox One at least four times more powerful than its predecessor.

Following a PlayStation 3 release on October 1, Blizzard has now issued the 1.02 patch for the Xbox 360 incarnation of Diablo 3.
Most notably, this patch fixes a number of relatively common in-game scenarios that have been causing the game to crash. It also improves the item-handling abilities of your character's Followers, ensures that proper gems can be found in higher difficulty levels and fixes an issue that would cause a player's controller to vibrate indefinitely.
As with all Xbox 360 patches, this latest Diablo 3 update will be applied the next time you fire up your online-enabled console. A full list of changes can be found on the official Diablo 3website. Just ignore the bit at the top stating the details only apply to the PlayStation 3 game; apparently Blizzard has yet to update that particular page.

Most of the information in this promotional Xbox One video is common knowledge, but a few interesting tidbits can still be gleaned. Albert Penello, lead planner for Xbox, reveals that using your profile on another Xbox One not only gives you access to your purchases, but also your own customized home screen and your game saves. "Basically, any Xbox One, anywhere in the world, is your Xbox," Penello says.
In terms of SmartGlass, Penello says the big appeal for Microsoft is discovery – being able to find content on the go, highlight it on a SmartGlass device, then come home and find it right there on Xbox One. "You can browse the entire catalog of games and entertainment on Xbox One on SmartGlass," Penello adds, and "you can navigate the dash; you can navigate your Blu-ray movies."
Ryse: Son of Rome and Dead Rising 3 are also specifically called out for their SmartGlass functionality. Ryse lets players customize their characters, set up multiplayer matches and comb through a bunch of other content while away from the console, while Dead Rising 3's integration is more literal – your real-life phone is treated as a phone, and Dead Rising 3 will dispatch mission calls with their own storylines and characters through SmartGlass.

In this age of games we play and pump money into all year round, developers have to be more careful than ever about how they handle change. Tweak things too little and fans may grow restless and hitch their wallet to another post. Tweak them too much, however, and those same fans may feel the rug has been pulled out from under them and reconsider their options anyway. This challenge must be particularly acute for the developers of FIFA. Whereas games like Dota 2 and League of Legends can evolve constantly and in measured fashion to keep players interested, EA Sports still ships a new edition of FIFA every September and charges a whole new cover price for it. The existing audience of players is then expected to move onto the new game and keep playing. As FIFA 14 demonstrates, however, that transition can be messy.A man running onto a through ball, yesterday.
As soon as the demo was released in mid-September, fans pointed out that several attacking styles were startlingly effective. Headers from crosses and corners resulted in goals far more often than anyone anticipated, while curled 'finesse' shots were extremely accurate and outwitted goalkeepers from unlikely distances. On top of that, strikers were sprinting onto passes lofted over the last line of defence using the through-ball button with surprising frequency. These attacks should all work now and then under the right conditions. If a striker is well-placed in the penalty area and evades his marker, while a winger with the ball has created enough space to cross it comfortably into his path, he should be able to direct it to an unguarded area of the goal. Similarly, a player with enough space in front of him and a clear line of sight to goal should be able to flight a finesse shot towards the top corner, and a defender or midfielder spotting the run of his team-mate should be able to send a lofted through-ball over the top to meet him. The individual stats of each player - such as the curve shot stat for people using finesse - and timing should play a part, but these attacks are not fundamentally out of place in the game.

Xbox One owners will not be able to identify themselves by their real names via Xbox Live when the system launches this November.
A Microsoft rep has confirmed that the implementation of new functionality to allow gamers to use their real names on Xbox Live has been 'postponed'.
"While real identities continue to be part of our plans for the experience on Xbox One, at launch, customers will continue to search for friends using their Gamertags," the rep told Kotaku.
"Our teams are working hard to deliver a quality experience for Xbox One. This means prioritizing some features and sometimes postponing others for a later update," they added.
Microsoft has previously stated that Xbox One players would have the option to identify themselves on Xbox Live by either their Gamertags or real names.
But a recent video demonstration of Xbox One's Friends app showed friends listed by their Gamertags only.
PS4 players will be encouraged to attach their real names to their PSN accounts on the console, which has an all-new interface that places a heavy focus on deeply integrated social interaction.
Microsoft has confirmed an Xbox One release date of November 22, 2013 in 13 markets. The Xbox One price has been set at £430 / €500 / $500.

Every Street United from Mandalay Sports Media to feature interactive components
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Xbox Entertainment Studios has signed up its first reality TV show for the Xbox One console, a football series titled Every Street United.
Deadline reports that the show will be produced by Mandalay Sports Media, with Mike Tollin and Jon Weinbach as executive producers and Jonathan Hock directing.
Mandalay Sports Media's back catalogue includes Coach Carter starring Samuel L. Jackson and teenage drama series One Tree Hill. Hock is primarily a documentary filmmaker and his most recent work is the series 30 For 30 for ESPN.
The report suggests the show will travel through America, Spain, Holland, France, Argentina, Brazil, Ghana and South Korea hunting down unsigned local football talent, with a finale at the 2014 World Cup. It's also "expected to feature interactive components."
Microsoft has already announced the Halo drama series, produced by Steven Spielberg, and entertainment and digital media president Nancy Tellem and CEO Steve Ballmer have reportedly been courting the big TV companies in LA in their hunt for content.

Crytek has risked the wrath of the development community after the Twitter account for Ryse: Son of Rome claimed the team had been crunching to ship the title in time for the Xbox One launch.
The game's Twitter account joked the team had worked through 11,500 dinners throughout development.
Another Tweet noted the development team had "been working into the nights" to ensure the game was shipped on time.
In response, dozens of developers hit out at the company through the hashtag #RyseFacts for poor project planning and management, and "stealing away developers' personal time".

EA took the wraps off Battlefield 4 this past week, offering players a chance to try an early beta. AMD has also been talking up Battlefield 4 in combination with their new Radeon R series line with a vengeance, highlighting the features of its new Mantle API and close partnership with DICE, Battlefield 4's developer. Sometimes, enough modest changes evolve into an entirely new product, and when you factor in the tessellation improvements, terrain deformation, Mantle API support, enhanced audio cues, and better particle effects, that's what BF4 is shaping up to be. And it appears likely the game is going to be a premiere title across all of the current and future consoles plus PCs. Battlefield 4 is going to be closely watched for a number of reasons; Mantle performance, comparisons between the Xbox 360 / PS3 and Xbox One / PS4 versions, and, of course, on its own merits.

Microsoft describes new Followers and Reputation systems, will allow digital content sharing for all Xbox Live users
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
The Xbox One's online service will offer players a more dynamic and malleable experience, including features for screening other players and sharing content among members of the same household.
The majority of community activity will be channeled through the new "Friends" app, which will offer immediate access to a real-time feed of your friends' activity, and a summary of your own recent activity, achievements and uploads.
With each user's friends list now capped at 1,000, Microsoft has developed several new ways to sort and select the people with which you interact. Friends that you play with regularly can be marked as "Favourites," allowing you to locate and communicate with them more easily, while the new "Smart Match" function will perform customisable background searches for online games.
Smart Match is tied to a new "Reputation" system designed to help users recognise and ignore troublesome gamers, while also locating and connecting with gamers whose interests and tastes match their own. Each person's Reputation level will be tied to their behaviour on the service, specifically the number of times other users have used the "Block" button to break contact with them.
This also represents a drive towards making Xbox Live a more hospitable and welcoming place to play. "It's not so much could I play with you, it's should I play with you," said Michael Dunn, Xbox Live's program manager.
In a nod to the emergence of Twitter, Xbox Live will also boast a more impersonal "Followers" feature. A particularly skilled Forza player, for example, can be 'followed' by any other Xbox Live user, giving them access to that player's activities, scores and uploads through their friends feed. That relationship will be one way only, and the feature can be disabled altogether at each user's discretion.
Achievements have also been improved. On Xbox One, they will be "decoupled" from the game, allowing developers to set new achievements based on the way people are playing. Developers will also be able to set community achievements, which will require collaborative effort to fulfil and be met with a suitably collaborative reward.
It also seems that traces of the sharing features touted at the Xbox One's survived the public backlash and subsequent back-pedalling. All Xbox Live users will be able to designate a "home console," so that all members of their household will be able to access their digital content. Gold members will be able to share the service's privileges in the same way.
"Your family members, friends that may visit your home, when they're logged in to that console, whether you're there or not, they will be able to access things like multiplayer and the other benefits you get as a Gold subscriber," said Kimberly Johnson, Xbox Live's lead program manager.
