Goodbye, Microsoft Points. Hello, local currency. A new Xbox 360 update, debuting today, has finally made official the long-awaited switch from Microsoft's own virtual currency, allowing you to spend your hard-earned pennies on Xbox Live content. If you've still got Microsoft Points laying around, never fear. As we've previously reported, existing point balances will be converted to their equivalent cash value. According to the company's FAQ, prices are now listed in whatever your local currency happens to be, plus tax. It's worth noting that purchases made with converted money will not be taxed for the time being, and said currency is good until June 1, 2015. For more details, check out Microsoft's breakdown of the switch at the source link below.

The game creation sandbox Project Spark will launch its Xbox One beta in January 2014. A Windows 8 version of the beta is due to arrive in late October 2013.
According to Digital Spy, Microsoft Game Studios general manager Dave McCarthy claims everything will be fully playable during the next-gen console beta. You can register for the beta here.
"You'll be able to either use that Crossroads mode to build something really quickly through story choices, you can do the blank slate editor, or you can take games that other people have built and then just edit them for yourself," he said.
Project Spark is coming to the PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The Xbox One version will include exclusive features, including the recently announced ability to use the software and Kinect as a living room "mocap studio."

Rare's Simon Woodroffe has said the studio is keen on bringing 'older Rare IP' to Xbox One using its new and improved Kinect sensor.
Woodroffe says that the new Kinect's inclusion with Xbox One - and in turn the lack of a need to validate it as a worthwhile secondary purchase - has lowered the pressures on the developer to utilise it for every function of a game, allowing them to be more strategic with its use.
"When we launched Kinect obviously there was a big focus on 'everything must be Kinect'," he told Official Xbox Magazine UK.
"Now it's in the box, [we can] use it where it make sense, don't where it doesn't. It can be used in some really - not gimmicky ways, which is what I think you'll see a fair amount of - but ways that actually really enhance the game. We've got some ideas for how to use it in the right way," he went on.
When quizzed on older IP such as Perfect Dark coming with Kinect functionality, Woodroffe responded, "Maybe! We've got an idea for that. It would be controller plus Kinect.
"We've got ideas for most older Rare IP, you won't be surprised to hear. There's quite a lot of desire to do that, and Viva Pinata, Conker... Banjo's very popular internally, a lot of people want to do stuff with Banjo," he said.
"We're all about giving people new experiences, that's what we want to do. It's a very technical studio ... We want to find that thing that nobody's ever done before and make a game out of it. We should be inventing new genres, inventing new ways to play. And this sensor gives us new opportunities to do it, with the fidelity it has now."
Rare is developing Kinect Sports Rivals, a Kinect-centric game for release on Xbox One in early 2014.

Gaijin Entertainment confirmed that it will be releasing its free-to-play aerial combat MMOG War Thunder on PS4 in time for launch earlier this week, with “easier socialising tools” plus support for video sharing and streaming on the platform. The game is currently in open beta on PC, and will be playable across platforms. We asked War Thunder developers Anton Yudintsev and Kiril Yudsintsev why they chose to bring the game to PS4, and if they had considered bringing the game to Xbox One this week at Gamescom. Why PS4?Anton Yudintsev: Well the main thing is you need a lot of people in the game for online gaming to make your game successful. And Sony allows us to make cross-platform games for PS4 and they allow us to make simultaneous updates. We have a digital agreement; we can make simultaneous updates on PC and PS4. That means there will be a lot of players playing from day one. They will be on PC but [playing] with PS4 players. This is one thing. The second is that PS4 is so powerful, and the architecture is similar to PC, so it’s much easier to maintain simultaneous updates.Did you assess Xbox One as a potential platform?AY: Microsoft… they have yet to decide how they’re doing online free-to-play and self-published games. They’re pretty far from that, even with their latest initiative.Does any of the things they’ve been saying in the last few months about self-publishing and patching and so on, does any of that change your attitude towards Xbox One?AY: They need to stop talking and start basically doing something. Because right now you need to certify your servers with Microsoft, you need to make… it’s not yet clear if there will be updates. If you can’t make updates without Microsoft [approval] they ruin the idea of online gaming, basically. They’ve said there’ll be some kind of opportunity [for that] but haven’t yet said quite exactly how it’ll be working.

Call of Duty (COD) Ghosts will have its own servers that gamers can use for online multiplayer on Xbox One and PC.
Developer Infinity Ward made the announcement at Gamescom 2013 in Germany, which should come as welcome news for many COD fans, considering Infinity Ward dropped dedicated servers in Modern Warfare 2 in exchange for a peer-to-peer system.
However, it's not clear whether the PS3, PS4 and Xbox 360 versions of COD Ghosts will have dedicated servers or not.
Call Of Duty Ghosts developer Mark Rubin told NowGamer: "Well, we're having to not talk about all of it right now.
"We did mention dedicated servers on Xbox One. We're also doing dedicated servers on PC.
"Dedicated servers is definitely one of those things that we think will help [control the game's online multiplayer]. It's not the silver bullet, but I think it's something that keeps in our philosophy of always trying to make the game experience better."
Call of Duty Ghosts launches on November 5th. It's the latest game in the mega popular Call of Duty video game war shooter series.

Microsoft Xbox corporate VP Phil Harrison isn't worried that making publishing open on Xbox One will flood the console's storefront with junk. In fact, he welcomes the impending flood. "I hope we have to deal with tens of thousands of games," Harrison told Engadget in an interview this week during Gamescom 2013.
Harrison and co. unveiled the Xbox One's indie-friendly publishing approach this week, dubbed "ID@Xbox" or Independent Developers @ Xbox, which allows game makers to self-publish on the upcoming next-gen console. After a short approval process, small studios or individual game creators can make their game available digitally via the Xbox Live Marketplace. "That will demonstrate that our platform is a really attractive place for creators to build games for," Harrison added, in reference to dealing with a flood of indie content potentially hitting the Xbox One. "We will measure success by whether new and exciting experiences come to our platform."
Head past the break for the full interview with Harrison, where we cover everything from his inauspicious gaming origins (he started developing games at 14!) to the future of Xbox One.

Capcom hopes to address the apparent technical struggles suffered by its Dead Rising 3 Xbox One gameplay demo at Gamescom.
Videogamer reports that the playable short, currently on display at the Cologne games expo, struggles to maintain 30 frames per second with significant dips suffered when the number of zombies on screen is ramped up.
Admitting that the game’s development team "had many questions over the [game's] performance”, senior producer Jason Leigh told the site that things should improve prior to the game’s November release.
"This demo is actually several weeks old and we've made a lot of ground,” he stated. “We've got a little bit more ways to go before we release the game.
"We're targeting 30 frames a second. Because we're based in Vancouver, and Seattle is where Microsoft is based, we're only three hours up the road so we constantly have tech people driving back and forth and they're helping us to make this a very smooth running game at launch."
Dead Rising 3 has been named as an Xbox One launch title.

Reiterating that Microsoft has no intention of releasing anXbox One without Kinect, corporate vice president Phil Harrison has told CVG the next-gen peripheral offers a "magical" and "personal experience" that "makes you think about your relationship with technology in a slightly different way".
In a newly published Xbox One interview, Harrison said: "Xbox One is Kinect. They are not separate systems. An Xbox One has chips, it has memory, it has Blu-ray, it has Kinect, it has a controller. These are all part of the platform ecosystem.
"What we have shown really well at Gamescom is the magic of games that use Kinect," Harrison said.
"We have shown the power of voice control. I'm probably going to piss off your readers unintentionally when I say this; I have an Xbox One at home, and being able to walk in and say 'Xbox on', and for the system to recognise me, launch and load my profile, and put my choices of content on the font page is a very magical experience.
"It makes you think about your relationship with technology in a slightly different way. It's personal. It makes you think, I wish more devices would do this."
In May, Microsoft responded to privacy concerns by confirming the abilityto turn Kinect completely off. The company also assured prospective buyers that it was prioritising their privacy by releasing a series of details on how users can control the functionality of Kinect.
Xbox One will launch in 13 markets this November. The Xbox One pricehas been set at £430/€500/$500.

So, you want an Xbox One? Do you really want one though... like, really? How do you know? Maybe the interface is terrible. That's something you'll just have to ponder until you play one. Well, that's only partly true, we sat down with Microsoft today at Gamescom for a bit of a tour. The bad news? Microsoft wasn't quite confident enough to let us show you the interface with photos or video, due to its pre-release nature. The good news? We're going to paint you a word picture instead! The results await after the break.

With the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation nearing their release dates, third-party peripheral makers are now working full force to launch gaming products that can be used alongside the new consoles. Mad Catz, for one, has already shown us its Arcade Fightstick, and now we can add the Force Feedback Racing Wheel to the company's lineup of Xbox One add-ons. The newly announced driving rig comes with twin Force Feedback motors, a replaceable wheel face and an adjustable pedal set, making it easy for gamers to fine-tune it to make it as comfortable as possible -- because you need to feel extra cozy during Forza Motorsport 5 time. Pricing and availability for the Force Feedback Racing Wheel are still unknown, but surely we'll find out those details as we get closer to the holiday season.

Phil Spencer says changes to Xbox One show the strength of Microsoft's "two-way conversation" with customer base
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Sony Computer Entertainment's Andrew House wrapped up the company's Gamescom presentation yesterday by delivering two things: the release date of the PlayStation 4 and a pointed takedown of Microsoft's reversals on the Xbox One.
"While others have shifted their message and changed their story, we were consistent in maintaining a message that is fair and in tune with consumer desires," House said.
Speaking with Eurogamer today, Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer responded to the jab, reframing as a strength the same thing House painted as a weakness, calling it a "two-way conversation we have with our customers."
"Certain people have tried to turn that into something that's a bad thing about what we're trying to do, and I just disagree," Spencer said, adding, "That two-way conversation with gamers has to be core to who we are as a platform. And if we don't have the capability of listening and reacting to what people are saying about our platform, then we're being too disconnected from customers who make investments in our platform and the games we build."
Spencer added that Xbox One is intended to be an ongoing service as much as a fixed piece of hardware, so changes should be expected. However, he did say there were some core parts of Microsoft's plan for the console that won't be changed.
"Now, we have a vision, and we've stayed on that vision around the digital ecosystem we want to put on Xbox Live," Spencer said. "It remains a core philosophy. We heard people valued some of the existing generation's disc-based DRM, so we said we're going to add that to the digital ecosystem we're building. It meant some delays in some of the stuff around digital so we could fit in the time to get physical done at launch, but our vision remains the same."

A bullish Phil Harrison has said that he thinks the Xbox One will launch with “the best line-up of games in the history of consoles”.
Microsoft’s corporate VP also says that, in light of his company’s many Xbox One policy changes, he wants his company to be seen as one that reacts to the demands of consumers.
“So we hope we are being seen as a brand that is listening to consumers, and one that gives consumers a choice,” he told CVG. “People can buy games physically on disc or digitally through our marketplace. Both can co-exist on our platform, which supports both very well.
“That's still a very important part of our strategy, but ultimately it's the games that make Xbox One stand out, and we have the best line-up of games – we think – in the history of consoles.”
23 games have been officially announced as launch titles for Xbox One.
The highlights are probably Dead Rising 3, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch Dogs as well as Microsoft’s first party offerings – Forza 5, Ryse, Project Spark and Killer Instinct.

There’s lots of positive noise coming out of Cologne today surrounding EA and Respawn’s multiplayer title Titanfall.
A new Gamescom gameplay demo, which can be seen below, shows off some more of the game’s vertically empowered gameplay that sees confrontations quickly switch between street level and rooftops.
It also illustrates how the battlefield will be shared between troops and the mighty robotic Titans.
Titanfall, remember, is currently only scheduled for release on Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC with a vague release date of 2014.

Xbox One title enables users to harness motion sensing tech to add personalised character animations
Players of upcoming world-building Xbox One title Project Spark will be able to harness the Kinect to crate the own in-game character and facial animations.
Revealing the news at Gamescom, developer Team Dakota revealed users could record motion capture in their living rooms, and capture facial animations, body motion, voice and sound.
Once captured and recorded, these can then be used to create custom animations, dialog and cutscenes.
Specific examples of how this could be used include creating your own attacks and movements, as well as applying animations to a character’s face to create unique expressions
Project Spark enables users to create their own landscapes and levels, which can be done through voice commands using the Kinect and through SmartGlass on tablets.

Starting August 24, Wal-Mart stores across the US will open up pre-orders again for PS4 and Xbox One consoles. Folks that show up to reserve a console will need to put a 10 percent down payment on their system of choice: $40 for PS4 and $50 for Xbox One.
