Yes, you can unplug the Kinect sensor without your Xbox One turning into a useless brick. In an update to an ask-me-anything style Q and A hosted by IGN, Xbox OneChief Platform Architect Marc Whitten was asked if the console would still work if the previously mandatory Kinect sensor were to fall onto a hardwood floor and break. Whitten responded that "like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn't plugged in, although you won't be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly used the sensor."
Whitten also detailed that you can turn the sensor completely off in the One's system settings. "When in this mode, the sensor is not collecting any information," Whitten said, adding that it's still in use for IR blasting in this configuration. He added that "entering into a required Kinect experience" with the sensor off will prompt you to enable it before proceeding. Like earlier announcements concerning daily DRM check-ins, indie self-publishing and headset inclusion, Microsoft is backpedaling on unpopular news from the Xbox One's launch.

Fable creator and ex-Microsoft Studios creative director defends the console maker
Former Microsoft studios boss Peter Molyneux has defended his former employer from the waves of abuse it suffered in the wake of the Xbox One reveal.
"Whether as consumers we like it or not, just like every form of technology interaction, there's an inevitability of online,” he told TechRadar. “We know that online is so much a part of our existence now that we're going to be in a world very soon where we have to be online all the time.
"It's quite an unfair thought that Microsoft are trying to control our gaming, they're trying to force us to be online all the time. [People] didn't really think that through.
"I know Microsoft, I know they were only doing things because they thought they were long-reaching and long-thinking. But the world we live in now is that we have to realise, especially if you're a big corporation, if you make one step wrong, the world will leap on you, and unfairly, very unfairly, they will judge you."
"Like everything else in our world, when something turns slightly bad it goes very bad and you have to make big correctional steps to get yourself back on track."

Let's say that you decline an Xbox One pre-order, buy the Xbox 360 version of a big game this fall and promptly regret that you haven't gone next-gen. Are you hosed? Not necessarily: GameStop is launching a promo that will let you upgrade to an Xbox One edition of a game for $10 or less. Provided you're a PowerUp Rewards member, GameStop will offer at least $50 in credit if you trade in an Xbox 360 copy of Assassin's Creed 4, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14 or Madden 25 and buy its Xbox One equivalent at $60. There are additional catches, of course. You'll have to buy a given Xbox 360 title within 30 days of its launch, and you'll have to use the credit before the end of the year. Even so, the promo could minimize buyer's remorse -- and save some Xbox One buyers from waiting until November to play the titles they want.

The Xbox One game console will enable all users of a single console to enjoy the benefits of a single users' Xbox Live Gold account, Microsoft announced this afternoon. This initiative, called "Home Gold," includes online multiplayer, various streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, NFL), Game DVR and the One Guide -- services that arespecifically enabled through Xbox Live Gold membership ($60 a year). That also includes digital games that any user of a single Xbox One purchased as well, a variant of functionality that Microsoft previously promised with Xbox One and subsequently rolled back after consumers reacted negatively.
Microsoft's Xbox VP Marc Whitten announced as much on the company's Xbox news site, Xbox Wire, where he wrote:"It means that your account and your gamertag are truly yours. You don't have to share your gamertag for multiplayer gaming with others in your home, or see recommendations for your kid's cartoons next to the recommended first-person shooter for you. It also means that you can introduce new games and enjoy multiplayer with friends while they are at your house. Last but not least, it also means that when you buy one Xbox Live Gold membership, multiple people can enjoy the best benefits of Xbox Live Gold on your Xbox One at no additional charge."
Apparently the same XBL Gold account can be signed in on both an Xbox One and an Xbox 360; as expected, Xbox 360 Gold accounts carry over to Xbox One, though this is the first we're hearing about peaceful co-existence between the two consoles. We'll surely hear more from Whitten and co. in Cologne, Germany during Gamescom 2013 in just a few weeks.

Remember when Microsoft said that you could soon buy Xbox Live content using real money? Well, check your Xbox 360: following an update to one of our consoles, we're now seeing content available in local currency. It's unclear at this stage how many gamers are seeing the change, although Microsoft has already mentioned that the next update will flip the switch. We've reached out to the company for confirmation of the rollout. If you get the update as well, don't worry about your account balance -- as Microsoft mentioned before, any existing points will be converted to their cash equivalent.
Update: Microsoft says that real money purchases are still limited to beta program participants, and you'll have to wait until the fall to see the currency change -- false alarm, folks.

Microsoft just detailed how the Xbox One's "Home Gold" will spread the Xbox Live Gold love across multiple users of a particular system, but what about those with the current generation's Xbox Live Family Plan? The folks in Redmond stopped accepting new subscribers to the $99 / year package back in March, and now users are receiving an email (included after the break) with details about what happens next. First, the good news: As of August 27th, if you have the family plan then each one of your activated subaccounts get full Xbox Live Gold status for the duration of your remaining subscription, plus three extra months. Prior to the conversion, you can still add sub accounts to the maximum total of four, and if you're set to auto-renew prior to conversion then that will still happen. The conversion may not happen exactly on that date, but subscribers can expect another email a week before it actually occurs.
Now the downsides: Activity reports and Microsoft Points allowances are going away, with reports disappearing at the time of conversion and the latter with the next system update. Another issue will apply to those who used it to game on multiple consoles in or across multiple households, since they'll need multiple individual XBL Gold subscriptions to do so -- one of the big problems the Family Pack resolved when it launched back in 2010. That could make sticking with the Xbox 360 or upgrading to an Xbox One more expensive going forward, check out the FAQ for all the details and run the numbers for yourself.

All models of new console will come with a headset as standard
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft has reversed another of its policies for the Xbox One, and will now include a headset with all versions of the console.
The reversal was revealed - though not acknowledged - by Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb in for the Xbox One's Day One edition. Though the Day One edition is a special version of the console only available at launch, Hryb confirmed that, "both the Day One and standard editions of the console include [a] mono-chat headset."
The new headset has been improved over the Xbox 360 for both comfort and audio quality.
Initially, Microsoft did not intend to pack-in a headset, though it was going to sell them as separate peripherals. Instead, in a statement issued to the press, it placed emphasis on the functionality of the new Kinect.
"Each Xbox One includes the new Kinect sensor, with a highly sensitive multi-array microphones designed to enable voice inputs and chat as a system-level capability, both in-game and with Skype and other experiences. For gamers who prefer a headset, we have a variety of offerings that you can find on the Xbox Wire."

Capybara reveals that its next indie production will eventually come to other platforms
One of the key indie titles revealed at Microsoft Xbox One E3 show is not in fact exclusive to the console.
Developer Capybara, which is also the creator of Sword & Sworcery and Clash of Heroes, has revealed that the game is only a timed exclusive on Xbox One and will be released on other platforms at a later date.
“Because of the way the game was announced and discussed in the press, there was naturally a little bit of confusion after the dust settled,” the studio said on its blog. “And that confusion stuck around. So, to clear things up, we wanted to take a quick second and answer your number one question.
“Like many games on stage at E3, Below will be available on the Xbox One first. Then, after a period of time, CAPY can bring it elsewhere. It’s always been this way.”
The developer went out of its way to praise Microsoft, however.

Unlike with its first console transition, Microsoft is adamant it will stay committed to supporting Xbox 360 'years' into the Xbox One's life.
That's according to corporate VP of Microsoft Studios Phil Spencer, who told Official Xbox Magazine UK that the firm is in no rush to ditch its outgoing machine.
PrevNext1 of 8
When asked how long Microsoft will support Xbox 360, Spencer responded, "Years. Last generation was different for us, we moved pretty quickly. This time, you will see us staying committed to the Xbox 360."
He went on, "I think it's a great platform. In certain areas, like trying to switch apps quickly, it shows that it was built in a different era, but in terms of the price point, the content library - I don't have the stats, but I bet it's the largest content library ever created in the history of the game space.
"So it's a great time even now to get into the Xbox 360 ecosystem. It's something we'll remain committed to on the content side as well as the platform itself."
Given the popularity of Xbox 360 this generation - particularly in US and UK - its not unfeasible that Xbox 360 could continue to be seen on shop shelves for several years to come.
Sony managed to string out the PS2's life for almost the entire duration of PS3's reign, the old console only just having been discontinued worldwide in January 2013 - more than six years after the November 2006 debut of the PS3.
Xbox One will be available in 21 markets this November. The Xbox One price has been set at £425 / €499 / $499.

Activision has confirmed the final Season Pass DLC drop for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, called 'Apocalypse'.
The new DLC pack will bring two brand new multiplayer maps, two re-imagined 'fan-favourite' maps, and the previously-teased 'Origins' Zombies experience.
The pack will be released on Xbox 360 on August 27. As usual, no other platform dates were released, but expect Xbox exclusivity to last four weeks.
Here's the official blurb for the four included maps:Pod: A failed utopian community from the 70's has left stacks of dilapidated residential pods nestled into an abandoned cliff side in Taiwan. Its residents long gone, the modernist compound now hosts frenetic combat as players must run atop the pods, as well as navigate their multi-tiered interiors for a strategic edge.
Frost: Fresh snow meets explosive gunpowder in this snow-capped European city, where the bridge over a frozen canal separates it into two sides, requiring players to employ multi-level traversal strategies to outsmart and ultimately outshoot their enemies.
Takeoff: Fans of "Stadium" from the original Call of Duty: Black Ops First Strike DLC will find themselves at home on "Takeoff." Marooned in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, this remote launch site is all about close-quarters combat, combining tight corners with open spaces for intense encounters.
Dig: An adaptation of the fan-favorite "Courtyard" from Call of Duty: World at War, where two archeological dig sites in Afghanistan become the perfect playground for combatants eager for hectic, unceasing confrontations. Treyarch, has retained the spirit of "Courtyard" with two major chokepoints, a wide open layout and raised platforms, but has provided fans with a fresh take on the multitude of paths.
And on the new 'Origins' Zombies level, Activision explains:Players will be deployed to Dieselpunk-stylized World War I-era France where they will encounter the return of the four original heroes from the very first Zombies map, Tank, Nikolai, Takeo, and Rictofen, as well as hordes of zombies that have overrun trenches and fields, as well as the ruins of a mysterious and ancient location.
Unleashed after the Germans unearthed the mysterious 'Element 115,' this next chapter in the Zombies legacy will explore the saga's origins as players reunite with an unlikely band of soldiers that come together to defeat the greatest evil the world has ever seen, using a period-specific arsenal that includes Wonder Weapons that harness supernatural powers, a diesel-drone and Mark IV tank, as well a new perk machine and power-ups.
DC and Marvel Comics illustrator and painter, Alex Ross, has provided original art for the Origins Zombies heroes, while Treyarch got rock band Avenged Sevenfold in to provide the song 'Shepherd of Fire' as its theme.
Apocalypse will cost 1200 Microsoft Points to those without the Season Pass.

There are still a few months until its November launch, but the Xbox One is already ready for primetime, apparently. One of the first Xbox One retail units -- among just 20 or so in existence -- made an appearance this morning in an unboxing video hosted by Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, director of programming for Microsoft's Xbox division. In particular, the video features a limited edition "Day One" version of the console, which is more or less sold out at every major retailer (at least Amazon, GameStop, and Best Buy). It's just below the break.
If you were one of the lucky few (thousand) to get in on Day One Edition pre-orders, you'll be getting the same stuff as standard edition pre-order folks, albeit with some extra "Day One Edition" branding flair -- the gamepad says "Day One Edition" on it and has a chrome d-pad, and there's an achievement exclusive to DOE owners. Both the standard and Day One editions cost $500, and both now include a wired Xbox One headset -- something that was previously excluded from the retail box.
Also of note, the video's subsequent blog post reveals that Xbox One gamepads recharge using microUSB rather than the proprietary cable used for charging Xbox 360 gamepads. Moreover, when the One's gamepad is plugged in, the internal wireless radio is turned off and it transmits data through the wire (which was not the case with the 360 gamepad). This has interesting implications for the One's gamepad in PC applications, which we'll assuredly explore more in the coming weeks as Gamescom returns to Cologne, Germany for another year of Euro-style game news.
Update: We've added some official press photos of the headset that comes in the box. Enjoy!
