Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox One launch title Ryse does not natively run in 1080p.
The company’s chief of staff for devices and studios group Aaron Greenberg said earlier this week on Twitter that “I know Ryse and Forza will be native 1080p”.
However, in a Twitter correction issued in the early hours of this morning the exec clarified that “Forza 5 is native @1080p, Ryse is native @900p, but Xbox One upscales all titles to 1080p & they look amazing”.
By reducing a game’s native resolution and allowing the console to upscale the image, devs can typically increase the performance of a title. In reality it’s unlikely that this slightly sub-full HD resolution will have any noticeable effect on the game’s visuals, which certainly look impressive.
However, this rationale is unlikely to dull the reaction online from a buying public keen to see the next generation of consoles ushering in a fully 1080p future that – don’t forget – was once the promise of the previous generation.

As well as taking retail by storm, Grand Theft Auto V has also dominated social networks.
Twitter UK has revealed that in the last 24 hours alone Rockstar’s game has been mentioned more than two million times on the service.
GTA V has also been gaining wide attention across the UK media. PCGamesN’s James Binns was on BBC Radio 5Live this morning discussing the game’s impact (with its somewhat sceptical hosts, it must be said) while a GTA feature is currently sitting on the front page of the BBC News website.
There’s been some less positive coverage too, of course.
The Telegraph is currently running a story about a 23 year old gamer who was mugged on his way home from an Asda store last night having attended a midnight launch.
The Daily Mail, meanwhile, reports on the curious phenomenon of the game being listed on eBay for prices well in excess of its RRP. Why there would be any demand for this on the day the game comes out is beyond us – is it really selling out?

Those wanting to buy both the current and next-gen versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts have a number of options open to them.
The process is slightly different depending on which version you opt for you, according to Eurogamer.
PS3 copies of the game, which is out on November 5th, will include a code that can be redeemed on PSN to download the PS4 version for just £10 when that arrives alongside Sony’s console on November 29th.
Alternatively, those buying the game digitally on PSN will automatically find a discount applied to the PS4 game, reducing it to £10.
Microsoft has yet to reveal its UK plans, but they will likely mirror its US offers, which are as follows.
The Xbox Game Ahead Program allows gamers to buy a dual-licence digital version of the game for $69.99, which entitles gamers to download both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions.
Alternatively, the Xbox 360 versions can be purchased digitally for $59.99 and users will find an automatic discount then applied to the Xbox One version on their account, reducing the cost to $10.
In addition, signing up to the £34.99 Call of Duty: Ghosts Seasons Pass will entitle the user to a free next-gen upgrade, as well as all the additional DLC already included.
Don’t forget, too, that GAME is offering a guaranteed £40 trade-in credit on a number of physical current-gen titles when handing them over in exchange for the next-gen version.

Grand Theft Auto 5. We reviewed it. So did other outlets. Opinions differ slightly.- Edge (100/100): "Everything works. It has mechanics good enough to anchor games of their own, and a story that is not only what GTA has always wanted to tell but also fits the way people have always played it. It's a remarkable achievement, a peerless marriage of world design, storytelling and mechanics that pushes these aging consoles to the limit and makes it all look easy."
- Game Informer (98/100): "Open world games are often weighed down by "errand boy syndrome," tasking players with menial jobs that seem beneath the ability of the protagonists or outside the cause of the narrative. ... The majority of the tasks feel more important because you can often see the direct benefit. For example, running weapons across Los Santos may increase the amount of money the airfield you purchased generates. This also applies to the heists serving as the game's centerpiece."
- Destructoid (90/100): "Though aspects of the game remain old fashioned and more could have been done to switch things up, the end result of still a game of spectacular scope and density of content. And while the narrative is as morally reprehensible as ever, the underlying intelligence backing up the wanton immaturity manages to keep GTA Vtreading the line of acceptable."
- Escapist (70/100): "Driving is forgiving, and your inevitable crashes have a low chance of tossing you through the windshield or flipping over your car permanently. Not only can you nab the fastest or best-handling car on the road for a more pleasurable ride, but you also level up each character's driving skill as you play. Franklin starts out as the most expert driver, and he has a special ability that slows down time for a short period to allow you to navigate around corners and between cars. Using the ability to win races and escape cops is very fun, and the RPG-lite mechanics of leveling provide some structure to the experience."

Critical Consensus: Rockstar's latest reveals bad people in a beautiful world
It might not be the highest-grossing franchise any more, or even the first name the reactionary media reaches blindly for when looking to hang a blame on video games, but a Grand Theft Auto release is still the industry's equivalent of a new Spielberg film, JK Rowling book or HBO TV series. There will be controversy, there will be excess, there will the frantic baying of fans, but most of all, there will be expectations.
Rockstar knows this. It knows that its poster-boy IP is a system seller, a public event, a release which puts gaming on the radar of all but the least engaged potential customer. GTA is big. GTA is special. GTA is famous. It's the series that editors love, igniting weeks worth of editorial and news coverage, reaction pieces and analyses, paeans, homilies and unnecessarily grandstanding introductions like this one. It doesn't matter if you're one of the adoring masses or the vocally uninterested minority - there's always something to talk about.
We've had plenty of speculative pre-amble already, but with the global review embargo now lifted, the disassembly begins in earnest. Who'll post the inevitable outlying low score? Who'll be the first to accuse them of 'click-baiting'? How long will we spend over the next few days discussing whether a '10' means a game is perfect or not? Is anyone actually going to read any of the reviews before buying anyway?
See? Always something to talk about. But that's not why we're here. Let's take this to the meta-level and discuss what other people have been writing in their reviews, starting with Eurogamer's EIC Tom Bramwell, who opens the bidding at 9/10 in a review which expresses clear admiration at the world which Rockstar has wrought and the sharp, acerbic humour displayed in the deconstruction of its subjects, but some disappointment that the great lens of irony never turns upon itself as subject.
"GTA4 took a few swings at fear-mongering 24-hour news, right-wing neo-cons and reality TV, but GTA5 is spoiled for choice and the gag writers go for the jugular"
Tom Bramwell, Eurogamer
"Los Santos takes the basic geography of Los Angeles and files it down into something tight and entertaining to navigate," Bramwell writes. "Where every street has its own story etched in phony colonnades or chain-link fences and landmarks are lifted from real life (Grauman's Chinese, Chateau Marmont) or the silver screen (the house on stilts in Lethal Weapon 2 springs to mind), then woven together with practised ease.
"Layered on top of that is Rockstar's trademark cynicism. GTA4 took a few swings at fear-mongering 24-hour news, right-wing neo-cons and reality TV, but GTA5 is spoiled for choice and the gag writers go for the jugular, skewering TV talent contests, self-help gurus, social media, internet trolls, political hypocrites and our obsession with sex, sex, sex."
The big gambit for this instalment in the series is the introduction of multiple characters, which can be jumped between on the fly. For Bramwell, the tired, frustrated ex-con Michael and the gang-related hood-rat Franklin are the pick of the trio, with late introduction Trevor engendering next to no empathy or engagement at all.
"The problem is that Trevor is an asshole," says Bramwell, leaving little room for misinterpretation. "When you first meet him, he does something so unpleasant that you wonder how you're ever going to empathise with him, and before long you're rotating an analogue stick so he can pull a tooth out of someone's jaw with a pair of pliers. These are serious and intense moments, but Trevor is too shallow and unconvincing to justify them, and instead his antics derail the narrative."

One thing you can never accuse the Saints Row series of is taking itself too seriously.
Developer Volition is probably all too aware that the game’s ongoing charts success is unlikely to continue beyond midnight tonight so has seen fit to prepare a cheeky bit of DLC for its wildly successful superhero sandbox.
CVG reports that one of the two bits of upcoming DLC for the title is called ‘GATV’.
Which is, need we point out, a play on GTA V.
In reality the download is simply a bunch of Johnny Gat related items such as clothes, hair and weapons.

Those playing Grand Theft Auto V on Xbox 360 should not install both of the discs that come in the box.
That’s according to Rockstar’s Twitter feed, which says that "for optimal performance, we recommend not installing” the second disc found in the box.
Buyers of the 360 SKU will find two discs in the box – one labelled ‘install’ and one labelled ‘play’. An 8GB mandatory installation from the first is required. Users can choose to install the second, too, although it seems that this will actually reduce the overall performance of the game.
Obviously this does not apply for the PS3 version, which comes on just the one disc, although that also requires an 8GB mandatory installation.
Whether this has any implications for the digital-only PSN version remains to be seen.

A new version of DashLaunch has been released with some minor bug fixes.
ChangeLog
================================================== ==============================
V3.09
- fix in update server for corona 16M consoles (thanks Danny Lane!)
- added exception logging to installer
- fix some minor bugs
- *known issue* some situations are causing a black screen when starting installer, it somehow seems to
be related to USB devices and/or signed in profiles. If you run into this issue, try the debug
version of installer – it's slower because it's logging to disk but apparently works fine. (thanks again Danny!)
V3.08
- tweak xelllaunch, see it's readme for how it's changed
- all patch sets updated to support xebuild update server full use
- added xebuild update server and related options
- fixed a bug with signnotice on 13604 (and probably older)
- changed farenheit to fahrenheit everywhere it wasn't before
- added 16537

Microsoft's Major Nelson is embarking upon a tour of the United States and Canada, opening new Microsoft Stores and visiting existing ones in order to show off the Xbox One to the general public. Obviously we're too scared to go outside too cool for large groups, but if you live in Massachusetts, Florida or Alberta, you'll get the opportunity to play Forza 5 and Killer Instinct about a month ahead of launch.
The first two events take place on September 19 and 20 at Microsoft Stores in Burlington and Boston MA, respectively. Nearly a month later, Nelson and his entourage pop into Orlando, FL on October 23 before heading up to Edmonton, Alberta on October 27. A fifth event is also planned for Scottsdale, AZ, although that won't take place until December 6.
Nelson says that more locations/dates will be added to the list in the coming weeks – complete location information can be found here.

Though the PS4 and Xbox One are far from finalized ahead of their retail debut this November, developers have told Edge anonymously that the PS4 is currently in a better state of performance.
With launch about two months out, "the hardware isn't locked" yet. These sources claim the PS4 is more capable: The same game, running on both consoles, is at 1080p at 30 fames-per-second on PS4, but runs at a lower resolution and frame rate on Xbox One as of right now.
Sony and Microsoft are continuously updating their graphics drivers for each console, which seems to be the point of contention amongst console developers right now. Microsoft "has been late on their drivers and that has been hurting them," another source claimed. The PS4, which has the speedier GDDR5 memory over the Xbox One's DDR 3, also currently yields faster read/write times than its competitor.
Last week, Microsoft announced a raised CPU speed for the Xbox One and, in August, the GPU got a bump, but these sources were quick to downplay the improved speeds. "The clock speed update is not significant, it does not change things that much," a developer source told Edge. "Of course, something is better than nothing."

Battlefield 4's Open Beta is set to detonate on the PC, 360 and PS3 on October 1, EA revealed on Friday. The game's next-gen counterparts have also been given street dates: November 12 for PlayStation 4 and November 19 for Xbox One, three days before the console's release on November 22.
EA noted in the announcement that beta players will be able to "learn maps, unlock items and build stats" for use in the October 29 release of Battlefield 4. Players can also carry over stats, unlocks and awards from the 360 and PS3 to the Xbox One or PS4 versions once they launch in November. Those looking to upgrade should check into the programs that offer deals towards buying the next-gen version of games they already own.
Those that sign up forBattlefield 4 Premium, pre-order Battlefield 4 Digital Deluxe or that have purchased Medal of Honor: Warfighter's deluxe or limited editions will be granted access to the "Exclusive" Battlefield 4 beta. The Beta's FAQ lists that the Exclusive Beta will also begin in early October - meanwhile this EA help article says that the Open Beta comes after the Exclusive one. We've reached out to EA for more information.
Update: The text of this article has been adjusted for clarity, and to reflect that further information may be forthcoming.

Hello, Eurogamers! Welcome again to the pick of this week's videos from Outside Xbox. There are only three more sleeps until Grand Theft Auto 5 day, when you will be too busy playing the game to watch videos about it. Now is the time therefore to catch Show of the Week starring GTA5 and its sprawling city of Los Santos. In the show, we tour iconic Los Santos locations in both GTA5 and in 2004's GTA: San Andreas to see what a difference almost a decade makes. It's a trip down memory lane, but who knew your memories had such a short draw distance?
Not a GTA fan? If you prefer your autos faster, older and not grand thefted, consider the classic F1 cars of F1 2013 Classic Edition. In the video below, Mike appraises the game's landmark 80s and 90s models and presents the three best of the bunch.

One of the Xbox 360’s last big retail releases will miss its 2013 release date.Developer Lionhead has confirmed that the game will now arrive in February 2014.“We’ve been working hard for the past year to bring you the very best Fable Anniversary experience on Xbox 360,” it wrote. “We feel though, that we need a little more time in order to meet our ambitions and give you, the fans, the best game possible.“I know I speak for everyone at Lionhead when I say that we can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been up to, and it gives us great pleasure to let you know that you can expect Fable Anniversary to be both on-shelves and online via the Xbox Games Store in February 2014.“It’s not easy making these decisions and I know that us asking you to wait a little longer whilst we get to play test the game every day is downright unfair, so over the next few weeks we’re going to be sharing with you more screenshots, more game footage and perhaps even some… top secret announcements!”http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/fable...l-2014/0121015

Remember the days when getting hold of a game early was as easy as popping down to your local indie? These are not those days.
Unless you’re Spanish. A report on the Spanish version ofGamereactor reckons that a number of chains have put the game on sale today.
The validity of these claims can’t be verified, although a picture of said game on said Spanish shelves has been posted on NeoGaf. Discussions about its Photoshoppedness are ongoing.
Closer to home, members of the PlayStation Europe forumare getting very cross indeed about the game’s failure to become available for pre-load today as previously promised by PSN.
The thread comes complete with statements such as “If they give us false information I will take legal proceeding against them” so do enjoy the carnage.
Elsewhere on the internet punters are vigorously debating whether Amazon’s dispatch emails mean they’ll get their game tomorrow even though past experience suggests that either Royal Mail or Amazon will safely keep hold of the discs until the day before release.

Video game detrimental to the success of movie Star Trek Into Darkness, claims director
Hollywood director JJ Abrams believes that the poor quality of April’s Star Trek video game was detrimental to the success of movie Star Trek Into Darkness.
The digital Extremes developed game has a Metacritic average of just 42 per cent on Xbox 360, receiving harsh criticism from reviewers.
“The last game, which was obviously a big disappointment to me,” he told Xboxer360 at the film’s DVD launch party this week.
“[It] was something that we were actually involved in from the very beginning and then we sort of realised that it was not going in a place where we were going to get what we wanted, so we dropped out and they continued to do it despite… y’know.
“To me the video game could have been something that actually really benefitted the series and was an exciting, fun game with great gameplay and instead it was not and was something that I think, for me emotionally it hurt, ‘cos we were working our asses off making the movie.
“Then this game came out and it got, this isn’t even my opinion, it got universally panned and I think that it was something without question that didn’t help the movie and arguably hurt it.”
