Xbox 360 does have a future beyond the launch of Xbox One, says Microsoft.
The firm gave up very quickly on the first Xbox when it launched the 360. And compared with PS3’s line-up, there’s been a lack of 360 exclusives this year.
The only exclusive titles left for 360 in 2013 are Fable Anniversary and World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition.
But Xbox Europe boss Chris Lewis told MCV that 360 has a “multi-year future”, highlighting the strong third-party line-up, plus its new Xbox 360 SKU. Both of which will be heavily promoted by Microsoft this Christmas.
“We remain very committed to our Xbox 360 business,” said Lewis. “It is an important part of the ecosystem, for our retailer partners, for our third-party developers and indeed for our own economics. So you are going to see us marketing Xbox 360 very strong.
"There is fantastic content coming to 360. GTA V and FIFA 14 will be out towards the end of September. Both of our consoles from our point of view will have a very healthy future for multiple years.
“In my own team I have a lot of people worrying a lot about that Xbox 360 plan, making sure that it is robust, that we have good healthy space in retail outlets, that we have a value proposition through Christmas, and that we harness some of that content I mentioned to you earlier. We see a genuine concurrent and healthy existence for both 360 and Xbox One.”
Xbox 360 is the UK’s best-selling games console of the generation, with 8.4m consoles sold to-date, just ahead of Nintendo Wii.

Simultaneous digital and physical launches on Xbox 360 are almost a reality.
Payday 2 was available to buy on Xbox Live Arcade just a week after it was launched at retail. Microsoft had previously insisted on a three-month wait between the physical launch and its digital release.
It’s still not quite day-and-date, which is what the firm says it will start doing from the launch of Xbox One. Day-and-date digital releases are already a reality on Wii U and PS3.
Microsoft had insisted on the gap between retail and digital in a bid to protect the High Street from the digital threat.
But this has seen the company fall behind its rivals. PlayStation and Nintendo already allow consumers to buy their games digitally and physically at the same time.

Publisher 505 Games is releasing digital hit Terraria in a box because it’s missing out on sales.
The 2011 PC action construction game was launched on PSN and XBLA via 505 Games this year.
It has sold over 2m copies, but now 505 is releasing the game in a box to boost sales in retail-centric markets.
“Different territories have different digital acceptance,” said head of global brand Tim Woodley. “We’re releasing Terraria in a box in September as we think the lack of digital uptake in France, Germany, Italy etc is prohibiting sales. Terraria has done incredibly via digital, but most of the numbers are from the US.
“The game has done 110,000 in Japan. But in Japan we put it in a box, and most of those units were retail sales. We think the same thing is happening in mainland Europe.”

XCOM: Enemy Unknown's expansion, Enemy Within, will be issued as DLC on PC and Mac for $30, but the only way to get it on consoles is through a new Commander's Edition – a retail re-release that includes the XCOM: Enemy Unknown game, the Slingshot and Elite Soldier add-ons, plus the Enemy Within expansion.
The reason for issuing the Commander's Edition is because Enemy Within is simply too large a file to patch into the console game as DLC. "For the expansion on the PC, it was fairly straightforward," Garth DeAngelis, senior producer at Firaxis Games, said during a PAX Prime interview. "But when it came to the consoles, it was too big. If we wanted to deliver the same content to the console players, we had to do it this way as a standalone expansion on a disc. We couldn't simply just patch it in."
DeAngelis added that Enemy Within includes so many changes to the baseXCOM: Enemy Unknown experience – new unit types, upgrades and even skill changes – it necessitated an entire re-issue of the game. "These things are tied deeply into Enemy Unknown so we wanted to release [the Commander's Edition] as sort of the ultimate edition, with all the previous DLC on this one disc. It was either deliver it this way or not deliver it at all."
XCOM: Enemy Within, announced at Gamescom nearly a week ago, launches on November 12.

Ellie's review of Fighters Uncaged, Ubisoft's ill-advised launch game for the first Kinect, has passed into Eurogamer legend. Look, it was a difficult time, OK? She's better now.So it was with a mixture of incredulity, fear and glee that we reacted to Ubisoft's announcement that it would be once again walking Microsoft down the aisle with Fighter Within, a launch title for Xbox One and its new all-singing, all-dancing, actually-working Kinect. Will superior hardware enable Ubisoft to make a game that actually functions, never mind manages to be enjoyable? Ellie's limbering up for round two, but in the meantime, over to our video editor Ian, who spoke to the devs, filmed some gameplay and tried the game out at Gamescom.

Xbox Live director of programming Larry 'Major Nelson' Hyrb said on his latest podcast: "The Xbox One will ship with a 500GB hard drive, all of them have that. The future plan is definitely to support external storage, much like we do on the Xbox 360. My understanding is that feature will not be there at launch because the team's working on some other things, but it's definitely on the list, I don't know when it'll come in though."
Xbox One head of product planning Albert Penello said in May that the console will have a non-removable 500GB hard drive. External storage solutions will be used through the console's USB 3.0 port.
Microsoft said last month that Xbox One's launch had been pushed backto 2014 in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland. Penello said the delay was due to Kinect voice-control localisation rather than supply issues.
Xbox One will launch in 13 markets this November. The Xbox One pricehas been set at £430 / €500 / $500.
GAME is once again taking pre-orders for Xbox One Day One Edition consoles, having previously halted them.
Xbox One Day One Edition consoles come with a commemorative controller, a code to unlock an exclusive Achievement, and a free digital copy of FIFA 14.

Looking into Microsoft's ID@Xbox program for independent developers? You'll be happy to hear that the company won't be placing any restrictions on your desired distribution model. Speaking to Joystiq at PAX Prime, Microsoft portfolio director for digital games Chris Charla explained that independent developers are free to utilize "every business model that any other game on Xbox One has." This means that independent self-published games won't be restricted to a different price structure than games from mainstream studios, opening up the possibilities for indie games with premium pricing, micro-transactions or free-to-play models. Charla explained it as a fundamental tenet of the program, clarifying that ID@Xbox titles have access to all the same features as any other game. "They have full Gamerscore, full Achievements, can take advantage of SmartGlass, Kinect – if you can do it with an Xbox One game, you can do it with anything that comes through the ID@Xbox program." It's a smart policy, one that takes full advantage of the growing popularity of the indie gaming scene. Check out Joystiq for more PAX Prime coverage.

Microsoft has seemingly altered its position on free copies of FIFA 14 with the Xbox One.
The platform holder had previously stated that all pre-orders for the console would include a digital version of EA’s football game.
Indeed, the official Xbox Twitter account categorically statedthat both standard and Day One editions of the hardware would include the giveaway.
Whether that was an error or Microsoft has changed its policy is unclear, but either way that is certainly no longer the case.
“FIFA 14 will only come free with Xbox One Day One Edition pre-orders, while stocks last,” Xbox Europe’s social marketing manager Graeme Boyd said today on Twitter. “If you have already pre-ordered a Day One Edition Xbox One, or pre-order one from now on while stocks last, you will receive FIFA 14 free.”
The result is, ultimately that there will be fewer free copies of FIFA 14 going around as the Day One Edition is in far more limited supply than the vanilla SKU.

The ditching of Microsoft Points has led to a re-launch for Microsoft’s Xbox Live Rewards offer.
OXM reports that players will now earn what are called Reward Credits by completing an array of tasks. These include renewing your Xbox Live subscription, completing surveys or playing a new game for at least ten hours within its first month of release.
Those who earn 5,000 Reward Credits will see them translated into account credit. 5,000 Credits equates to £3.35 in the UK.

Tech would likely cost thousands of dollars for consumers, says Penello
Microsoft’s impressive illumiroom tech will not be available to consumers as it’s too expensive, says the firm's senior director of product management.
The tech, revealed last year, projects the peripheral vision in a game beyond the confines of the TV and into the rest of the living room, with the aim to create a more immersive experience.
But speaking to Ausgamers, Penellio said he doesn’t expect consumers to see Illumiroom available on the market, as it would cost thousands of dollars to set up.
"I wouldn’t expect you’ll see that,” Penello said.
“It’s very, very cool tech but it’s, like, for a consumer, it requires projectors and things. It’s really super-neat if you’re in the lab and you’ve got Microsoft money and you could totally set up this awesome lab, but... we looked at it, but for an average customer it’s, like, thousands of dollars [for the set up]."

We also noted some very sad news with this release:Now that this is complete it is time we announce the disbanding of TeamFSD. We as a team have lost a lot of members and come to the point where its time to move on and grow. We will still be involved in the scene and around for discussions and such, but TeamFSD will be no more.
Team xecuter would like to offer our thanks and support to our colleagues at TeamFSD who have done some truly superb work for the 360 homebrew community. The scene owes you a great debt of gratitude !

Microsoft outed some technical details about the XBox One SoC today at Hot Chips 25.

Microsoft outed some technical details about the XBox One SoC today at Hot Chips 25.
XBox One SoC and some details
Physically, the system-on-a-chip at the heart of the Xbox One is 363 square millimeters. But the real whopper is the amount of logic integrated within it: 5 billion transistors. Although Wikipedia isn’t necessarily the final arbiter, the Xbox One is possibly the largest chip manufactured to date, with a comparable number to Intel’s 64-core Xeon Phi coprocessor for supercomputers, and easily topping Intel’s 8-core “Poulsen” Itanium that the chip maker launched in 2012.
Unfortunately, Microsoft didn’t disclose how much power that chip will consume. However, the chip will be power gated down to 2.5 percent of its power, said John Sell, a hardware architect at Microsoft who gave the Xbox One silicon presentation at Hot Chips. It will be manufactured in 28-nm process technology by TSMC, Microsoft’s foundry partner.
Nor did Microsoft disclose how fast the chip will run. All told, the Xbox One system contains 500GB of storage, 8GB of DDR3 memory and 47MB of on-die storage that can be used as cache memory.
The system CPU is based on the AMD Jaguar processor architecture; the system uses eight cores with 32 KB of instruction and data cache, with four of the cores connected to a shared 2 MB shared level-2 cache.
The Xbox One chips are highly customized, Sell said. One significant change from the previous-generation Xbox 360 is that the graphics core is integrated with the CPU, as are most of today’s PCs chips. Sel referred to the GPU chip as a “DirectX 11.1+” chip, as it contains optimized graphics processing unique to the Xbox One. “There’s more than a CPU’s worth of processing in there,” Sell said.

Kinect challenges
Each Xbox One will contain a Kinect depth camera, designed by Microsoft. (The camera used in the Xbox 360 was designed by PrimeSense, an Israeli developer)
Patrick O’ Connor, another system designer for Microsoft, explained that the chip can resolve players less than 1 meter away, and players at more than 2 meters away, with a 70-degree field of view. Microsoft also has to take into account a whole range of environments—from players that like to play games in the dark to broad daylight.
The Kinect on the Xbox One actually “illuminates” the room with its own modulated light. What the camera’s 512 x 424 sensor “sees” is the reflected light, which will be out of phase depending on the way it reflects from objects. The Xbox One then adds or subtracts their values to weed out the ambient light, determine the player’s location and motion, and what is the “active” image. Each Xbox One can distinguish up to six different players, O’Connor said, but exactly “who” is playing at any one time takes some figuring.
What the Xbox One can do, however, is determine, on a per-pixel basis, how best to “see” the object. Since the camera can’t actually lengthen its exposure or widen its aperture, it needs to use different shutter times, before picking the best one. Combining the Kinect’s own illumination with intelligent “reading” of the image eliminates common problems, such as sidelighting that can confuse the camera, O’Connor said.

Independent games will not have to adhere to a set pricing structure on theXbox One. During an interview with Joystiq at PAX Prime, Microsoft's portfolio director for digital games Chris Charla said the ID@Xbox program, an initiative that will allow independent developers to eventually self-publish on Xbox One, will enable "every business model that any other game on Xbox One has." So ID@Xbox games support free-to-play, micro-transactions and premium pricing.
"On Xbox One, games that come through ID@Xbox are no different than any other game," Charla said. "They have full Gamerscore, full Achievements, can take advantage of SmartGlass, Kinect – if you can do it with an Xbox One game, you can do it with anything that comes through the ID@Xbox program. That's like a fundamental tenet of the program."
The ID@Xbox program, an effort that will allow independent developers to use retail Xbox One consoles as developer kits, was first announced last week. Developers will not be able to self-publish on Xbox One at launch later this year, though Microsoft has said the functionality will be rolled out an unspecified later date.

Xbox Live Marketplace has been renamed Xbox Games Store.
Microsoft has rebranded the online marketplace as part of a wider revamp of the Xbox platform ahead of this November's Xbox One launch.
The Xbox Games Store website groups titles by platform, with sections for Xbox One, Xbox 360, Mobile and Web games.
Microsoft stopped selling PC games via the old Xbox Live Marketplace on August 22.
And earlier this week, the platform holder released the autumn Xbox 360 dashboard update, which replaced Microsoft Points with prices in local currency.
Microsoft announced earlier this month that Xbox One's launch had beendelayed to 2014 in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
Xbox One will launch in 13 markets this November. The Xbox One pricehas been set at £430 / €500 / $500.
GAME is once again taking pre-orders for Xbox One Day One Edition consoles after halting them at the weekend.
Xbox One Day One Edition consoles come with a commemorative controller, a code to unlock an exclusive Achievement, and a free digital copy of FIFA 14.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas and Magic 2013 have been confirmed as September's free 'Games with Gold' titles.
Microsoft announced the Games for Gold promotion at E3 2013 in June. Every Xbox Live Gold member receives two free Xbox 360 game downloads per month until 2014.
Magic 2013 will be first up, going free from September 1 until September 15. A day later Rainbow Six Vegas goes free through to the end of the month.
Microsoft notes that Xbox Live members in South Africa will receive Shadowrun instead of Rainbow Six.
Previous games to have been offered by the promotion include Defense Grid: The Awakening, Assassin's Creed 2, Crackdown and Dead Rising 2.
Microsoft has officially announced an Xbox One release date window of November 2013 in 13 markets and a price of £429 / $499 / €499.

The Xbox One release date is targeted for 'late November', according to words from PepsiCo, a promotional parter of Microsoft.
So stipulates the company in a terms and conditions document for an upcoming promo campaign for which PepsiCo and MS have partnered to give away 'an Xbox One every two minutes' between November 5 and January 17.
"Xbox One has targeted launch date of late November 2013," reads the text. "Therefore, the initial shipments may be slightly delayed; please allow 12-14 weeks for delivery," it adds (via NeoGAF).
Microsoft has so far only officially confirmed Xbox One's launch for 'November'. Sony has confirmed a US PS4 release date of November 15 and an EU launch of November 29.
This is the latest in an onslaught of Xbox One release date rumours, with recent retailer leaks heavily suggesting a November 8 launch.
The Xbox One will launch in 13 markets this November, with eight including Russia and Sweden delayed to a 2014 release.
