The Financial Times reports today that Microsoft has replaced the sci-fi dedicated channel Syfy as the backer of a rebooted Blake’s 7.
The original announcement of the new thirteen-part series came last April from Fremantle Media. At the time, Fremantle outlined the show scenario as so: ‘The year is 2136, Blake wakes up on one side of the bed. He reaches for the other side. There’s nobody there. As reality sets in, this handsome ex-soldier sits up, and looks at a photo of his wife Rachel. Beautiful. Deceased.'
The new series is to be written by Joe Pokaski, who has previously produced and written for Heroes and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and directed by Martin Campbell, director of James Bond outings GoldenEye and Casino Royale.
Blake’s 7 was originally broadcast in four series from 1978 to 1981. The popular low-budget space opera was created by Terry Nation, best known as the creator of the Daleks for Doctor Who.
The new series will debut exclusively on Xbox Live, reports the FT. However, any further details such as the cast and release date, and whether the series is to be a direct sequel, are yet to emerge.

The GTA series has been about the most popular video gaming franchise in history. The original Grand Theft Auto started out on the PC and PSOne in 1997, and has since spawned many spin offs and sequels. All of which feature to some extent car jacking, sandbox (or the freedom to run around the game world as you please), and guns. Lots of guns.
GTA 5 release date
GTA 5 is set for release on September 17th on PS3 and Xbox 360.
It was initially widely expected that the PC version would come significantly later, perhaps early 2014. However Nvidia recently stated in an earnings call that Grand Theft Auto V will be released for PC this autumn (fall for American readers).
There is no word as yet as to whether GTA 5 will be available for PS4 and Xbox One.
GTA 5 multiplayer
Rockstar has released a video detailing a multiplayer version of GTA called Grand Theft Auto Online.
Technically this is a standalone game, but it will be given away with GTA 5. It will be available on its own on October 1st.
Watch it in full below for all the details below:
GTA 5 gameplay
GTA V is set in a made up place South Californian city called of Los Santos. It seems to essentially be a parody of Los Angeles of sorts, much like Liberty City was supposed to be New York.
GTA games have always seen you either follow a set of missions, such as stealing a car, chasing a car, getting into mob tear ups or a a million other things, and exploring the sandbox world with abandon.
It’s not unfair to say that this exploring usually ends up involving a gun or a car chase too – but in the gaming world there’s not much to touch it in terms of virtual freedom. Want to spend an hour tearing around in a helicopter? Cruising downtown in a sports car? Enjoying a rocket launcher from the top of a building? Well, you can.

The Xbox One will automatically detect if it is overheating and will make adjustments to cool the system down, General Manager of Console Development Leo del Castillo told Gizmodo. As is common with some PCs, Castillo said the development team can "dial back the power of the box considerably," forcing the system into a low-power state to correct issues.
Of course, the primary method for cooling the system down revolves around how the fan inside the box operates. "The way we designed the box, we don't actually intend it to ever have to go to maximum speed under normal environmental conditions," Castillo said. "But there is overhead. So we'll allow the fan to go all the way up to its maximum speed and if that solves the condition without the user having to do anything."
The Xbox One will launch this November in 13 regions, but will arrive in eight others in 2014.

After I ask Infinity Ward executive producer what it is about Call of Duty: Ghosts, exactly, that is innovative, he makes a "hmm" sound and thinks for a while.I can tell he's toiling over his answer - not that he can't think of anything that's innovative about Ghosts, the next game in Activision's gargantuan first-person shooter series, but because he finds the term somewhat problematic."That's always a tough one," Rubin tells me, bleary-eyed and exhausted after hours of back-to-back interviews at yesterday's Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer reveal event in LA, "because we have to innovate within our realm. Other games innovate within their realm. Other games games have added stuff that we've had in our game for years, and they'll add it to their game. And we'll do the same. So innovation becomes a weird word when you say it that way."I was toiling with the idea of what some gamers might think about it, which is, show me something I've never seen before. Anywhere."The reaction to Ghosts' multiplayer reveal, from what I've seen, has been mixed. The impressed point to the new Squads system and its associated game modes with pleasant surprise, and nod in excitement at the prospect of dynamic maps with their traps and destruction. The unconvinced suggest Squads mode is nothing more than a noob-friendly experience and, therefore, not worthy of further investigation, and believe the dynamic maps idea is too little too late, particularly now Battlefield 4's "Levolution" appears to be doing mid-match mayhem on a much grander scale.Whatever your reaction, most agree that Call of Duty: Ghosts' multiplayer looks a lot like the multiplayer in past Call of Duty games, even with the addition of mid-match map-destroying orbital strikes and collapsing gas stations. Having played Ghosts extensively yesterday, I can say it feels a lot like the multiplayer in past Call of Duty games, too.But is there more to Ghosts than meets the eye? Rubin casts his mind back before continuing. "If you remember, when Modern Warfare came out, one of the big, innovative changes, if you want to call it innovative, to Call of Duty was adding a progression level and adding perks. The word perks, which is used in a bunch of games now, came from Modern Warfare."We look at Modern Warfare as one of the biggest changes to Call of Duty ever. And what we've done with this game is go back and tear apart every system and rebuild it in a way we feel compliments our philosophy for this game."

It looks like the Xbox One won't be as widely available at launch as originally planned. Citing a need to meet demand, Microsoft said today that its new console will be available in 13 countries at launch, instead of the 21 initially promised. Instead, the remaining eight markets will get it sometime in 2014. All told, those 13 lucky countries include: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and New Zealand. The other eight --Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland -- will still sell it eventually, but for now Microsoft isn't committing to a firm launch date. For now, all we know is that it's promised to arrive "as soon as possible next year." As a "show of appreciation for your patience," to use Microsoft's words, people who placed pre-orders in those eight cut-off countries will receive a free game. Feeling consoled, guys?

If we may paraphrase a sacred text, Microsoft giveth and Microsoft hath taken away. Earlier today, the company announced that the Xbox One would be launching in only 13 markets (as opposed to the originally planned 21), but not all news out of Redmond is bad. To allay the concerns some Xbox 360 owners had over switching over to the new system, Microsoft has announced the Season Pass Guarantee. Basically, all it means is that season passes purchased on the 360 will carry over to the Xbox One, provided you own the same game for both consoles. Big names like Activision, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft are on board and have plans on offering exclusive content for season pass holders for games like Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 on both systems. The Xbox One may have gotten off to a rocky start, but Microsoft seems keen on smoothing the transition when the console hits stores later this year (for some of us, at least).

Activision and Infinity Ward have bundled expensive gadgets with the last few Call of Duty special editions, and they're keeping up this recent tradition with Call of Duty: Ghosts. Buy the Prestige Edition of the game on November 5th and you'll get a 1080p, water-resistant "tactical camera" with a 4GB memory card. While it's not clear which company makes the wearable cam, Activision claimed during its Ghosts multiplayer unveiling that the device should hold up against counterparts sold in stores. The Prestige Edition is appropriately expensive at $199, although you're getting a lot for your money -- besides the camera and game, the box also includes a carrying case, a Season Pass for downloads and a paracord strap. If you've ever wished you could record your adventures beyond your game console, this is certainly the bundle for you.

August 14th, 2013, 23:54 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has hinted at the possibility of Xbox One downclocking itself to protect itself from overheating.
This is very similar to how gaming PCs protect themselves from high temperatures. The first step such a machine will take if it feels that its components are getting too warm is ramp up the fans – be that the case fans, CPU cooler or graphics cards fans.
If that’s not sufficient then some components, such as quite often the GPU, will ‘downclock’ in an effort to cool down. That means the card will lower the speed at which it operates to reduce the amount of power it needs, thus losing heat.
This could well be what Xbox’s general manager of console development Leo del Castillo was hinting at when telling Gizmodo what measures an Xbox One will take if it realises it’s getting too warm.
“We can’t prevent misuse of the product but we can certainly anticipate it," he explained. “That's done by the Xbox being aware of the temperature it's running at, and having the capacity to cool itself down in a few ways.
"The way we designed the box, we don’t actually intend it to ever have to go to maximum speed under normal environmental conditions. But there is overhead. So we’ll allow the fan to go all the way up to its maximum speed and if that solves the condition without the user having to do anything.
"One thing that we have more flexibility with is that we can dial back the power of the box considerably. We had a little less flexibility with the 360. And so basically, if we couldn’t dissipate the heat, there wasn’t a whole lot of leverage we could pull to keep the heat from being generated, so we had a limited amount of time before it just shut down.
“Xbox One can actually dial it back to a lower power state, so low in fact that it can in a mode that uses virtually no air flow."
There’s one downside to downclocking, however – reduced speed means reduced performance. Could this result in games suddenly losing frames or visual quality?
Last month it was claimed that Microsoft has designed Xbox One to remain powered up for ten years, with heat control being one of its highest concerns.

August 14th, 2013, 23:52 Posted By: wraggster
The CEO of indie developer InXile has claimed that Microsoft has completely reversed its approach to indies on Xbox One in the space of just 90 days.
Microsoft last month reversed its policy on Xbox One indie games by deciding it would allow independent developers to self-publish digital titles on the console.
“It's been happening, and I've heard from Microsoft,” Brian Fargo told [a]listdaily. “I used to want to publish directly on the Xbox, and it was 'OK, how many retail SKUs are you going to put out?' I always felt there was there this huge disconnect – why do I have to put products on a retail shelf in order to be on XBLA?
“[Now] you're hearing Microsoft reaching out, they're saying 'Hey, we want you on the machine,' they're making the calls. You can use the hardware as a development kit, making it more accessible, because indies can't afford to buy [development kits].
“It used to be that if you shipped on Sony first you could never be on the Xbox. Now they're like 'Well, we're flexible, maybe there's features...' There's a different dialog there.
“They've come full circle in a matter of ninety days on every part of it, including the ability to be on the platform at all.”

Microsoft has tonight confirmed that the Xbox One roll-out in Europe will now be staggered across the end of 2013 and start of 2014.
UK is still getting the next-gen console in November - butBelgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland have to wait until 2014.
At E3 the firm said the console would launch in 21 markets, but the firm has admitted this was "an aggressive goal".
It will now launch in 13 territories this year.
A statement on the news site Xbox Wire said: "The team has been working very hard to deliver Xbox One to as many markets as possible.
"Our priority is ensuring our customers get the best Xbox One experience the first day it is available. To do that, and in order to meet demand, we have adjusted the number of markets that will receive Xbox One in November to 13 markets, including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand, in November.
"We remain committed to launching Xbox One in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, as soon as possible in 2014.
"While we wish we could launch Xbox One simultaneously in these markets, there are many factors that determine the timing of specific market launches. This includes work to localise the Xbox One dash, incorporate additional voice and languages, and build partnerships to bring apps and meaningful local content to each country."
As compensation for those who pre-ordered in territories where the device is delayed, Xbox will offer a free pack-in game on launch.

An executive who manages the controller design team at Microsoft has suggested that biometric sensors would not be necessary on Xbox One because the new version of Kinect can fulfil that role.
Xbox Accessories general manager Zulfi Alam told CVG that Kinect can serve as its own biometric sensor - a claim that, if true, could pave the way for completely new gameplay experiences on Xbox One.
Biometrics has become a new line of inquiry for platform vendors. The theory is that sensors on controller pads could potentially read the player's state - either through heart rate or skin conductance - and thus tailor-fit gameplay in real-time.
Sony initially built a PS4 controller with biometric strips on the prongs, but eventually scrapped those plans for reasons unknown. In January, Valve company president Gabe Newell suggested that the upcoming Steam Box console would feature similar technology.
"I think you'll see controllers coming from us that use a lot of biometric data," Newell said at the time.
But Microsoft is not considering such controller add-ons because, Alam says, the Xbox One will already come bundled with technology capable of reading player states.
"We already have the ability to know what your emotion and heart-rate is, and that's through the Kinect camera," Alam said in a interview with CVG.
"Adding biometric sensors would drain battery life, and we've already got it via Kinect, so why do it?"

As Ubi explains, "Playable maps include Teensies in Trouble and A Toad Story, along with their Invasion Mode counterpart level, and a fan-favourite musical map themed to the song 'Black Betty'.
"The demo will also include access to the Gallery of Heroes where players can swap costumes of their character, and various trailers for the game."
Meanwhile, we have two new Rayman Legends videos below; the first a gameplay playthrough of the 'Gloo Gloo' music level, and the second a developer interview with technical director of art Benjamin Mouret, who discusses some of the additional content that's been built into the game thanks to its lengthy delay.

The evil bastards!
They want us to be connected to the internet ALL THE TIME? Indies can’t self-publish? They’re not giving us a free headset? Kinect needs to be plugged in for it even to turn on? HANGING’S TOO GOOD FOR 'EM!
Well, firstly I still find it very hard to believe that a significant number of those willing to lay down FOUR HUNDRED AND THIRTY SODDING POUNDS on a new games console don’t have a wireless network set up at home. But yes, I concede, some people use TalkTalk so will therefore not have a reliable internet connection and in those circumstances Xbox One might prove problematic.
The indie self-publishing thing? Yeah, that was utterly stupid. Thank god they reversed that. A free headset? The most boring story of 2013 to date. Kinect? As an optional extra I can see how it would appeal to people. It doesn’t appeal to me. I swap my gaming between the main screen and a monitor for when the other house humans want to watch TV so basing any setup on the static housing of a camera is a pain for me. I’d rather be rid of it.
So I was pleased when Microsoft this morning quietly announced another Xbox One U-turn when it admitted that Xbox One will now be permitted to function without Kinect being attached to it.
Yay.
After Microsoft’s catastrophic E3 reveal there was no doubt in my mind that I’d never own an Xbox One. Has my opinion changed now we’re two months down the line, the draconian DRM has gone and I’m free to leave Kinect in the box? Yeah, definitely. All they need to do now is shave £100 off the RRP and you can sign me up as an interested party.
But how can that be? Why on earth would I have changed my mind? Well, because Microsoft announced Xbox One alongside a number of ridiculous policies. Everyone told them over and over again that these policies were ridiculous so Microsoft has dropped them.
That’s a good thing. Surely that’s a good thing? How can that not be a good thing?
So why oh why do I read all this criticism of Microsoft every time another policy change is announced? Every time it proves that it’s willing to listen to consumers? Every time it gets rid of things we hated about Xbox One?
"So what is Microsoft to do? Stand by its
guns and prove that it doesn’t give a toss
what anyone thinks and try and sell the
Xbox One on the strength of principal,
hoping that a groundswell of respect for
its ongoing disregard for the views of its
target market slowly stokes up the pre-orders?"
Every time I dare ask this question on Twitter I tend to get more or less the same response. “Microsoft looks weak”, “Microsoft should have stuck by its guns”, “Microsoft shouldn’t have been so arrogant in the first place”, “Microsoft’s policies look muddled”.
No shit! Of course its policy is muddled. It revealed what it regarded as an innovative and forward-looking digital roadmap for the next generation of consoles and we all unanimously rejected it.
So what is it to do? Stand by its guns and prove that it doesn’t give a toss what anyone thinks and try and sell the Xbox One on the strength of principal, hoping that a groundswell of respect for its ongoing disregard for the views of its target market slowly stokes up the pre-orders?
That’s mental! Yes, it screwed up the launch big time. So now it is trying to make amends by doing all of the things that we all asked for.
Dear god, I even read a piece this morning arguing that the dropping of Kinect is bad because it might kill the accessory dead! Kinect will have a long and fruitful life provided it offers a suite of functionality that consumers are willing to buy into. If it doesn’t, it won’t. That’s how consumerism works and that’s how its fate should be decided.
Microsoft’s sole responsibility and sole reason for existing is to make money and please its shareholders. That’s an awful truth and it makes me despair about the world but that is how it is. If you don’t like it then there’s no point whining about Microsoft – join with me and together we’ll forge a new world order built on a blend of socialism and responsible capitalism.
But until then, to expect – or even criticise – Microsoft to reacting to what was a period of prolonged and forceful feedback is stupid. Just stupid. It demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding about how the current world operates. Microsoft needs Xbox One to succeed. Therefore it is duty bound to release a product that will appeal. A product that will appeal to all the people who hated always online, mandatory Kinect and the lack of a headset.
If you honestly can’t forgive Microsoft for the vision with which it announced the Xbox One then OK, you’re absolutely 100 per cent entitled not to buy the console. But when the dust settles and Microsoft launches a console in November that is far, far more appealing than the one we were presented with in LA, I do wonder how many people will decide to miss out because of a now rectified set of mistakes that were made five months ago.

Following its decision to allow the Xbox One to operate without requiring an always-on internet connection, it seems that Microsoft have also made a reversal on the system’s Kinect sensor requirement.
During an IGN user question-and-answer session entitled‘Ask Microsoft Anything about Xbox One’, one user asks what should happen if the Kinect were to break, citing Microsoft’s previous statement that ‘[the] Kinect must be plugged in for the Xbox One to function’. In reply, Marc Whitten, the chief Xbox One platform architect, explains that ‘like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in’.
While Whitten does mention that while the Xbox One is ‘designed to work with Kinect plugged in [in order to make] gaming better in many ways’, he states that any Kinect-required experiences or games will automatically notify the user and offer the chance to turn the sensor back on in order to continue.
Whitten goes on to reassure another user that, despite fears that the always-on Kinect sensor might collect private data, when the Kinect sensor is plugged in, it can also be ‘completely’ turned off, save for IR blasting, which is commonly used to allow set-top boxes to control other boxes (for instance to change the channel) and which collects no data.
For some the move may be seen as yet another reversal by Microsoft after the company removed the Xbox One’s always-online restrictions. Many commentators saw the move as Microsoft’s attempt to equal the freedom of Sony’s Playstation 4 platform, which was praised by many following its reveal and was

Cxbx correctness-fixes Git (2013/08/10) is compiled. Cxbx correctness-fixes is a branch of Cxbx. Cxbx is an Xbox emulator for the Microsoft Windows operating system developed by a group of programmers led by a hacker named Caustik and written in the C++ programming language. Cxbx's goal is to convert a game from an Xbox executable to a native Windows executable.
Cxbx correctness-fixes Git Changelog:
* Tweak support for D3D8::SetRenderState_MultiSampleRenderTargetMode() in XDK 5344. 5344 should really have own OOVP file given differences found to date -- they are currently aliased -- but duplicating the functions for now is fine
* Tweak support for D3D8::SetRenderState_MultiSampleMode() under XDK 5344, to not use an Xref (was troubesome)
* Support D3D8::SetRenderState_TwoSidedLighting() in XDK 5344
* Address duplicate OOVP pattern matching, to resolve problems with Futurama. This may adversely effect Whacked support
