CNET reports that Grand Theft Auto Online, the biggest entertainment release of the year with more than $1 billion in annual sales, is having some trouble getting the gamers online. The title, which launched on game consoles Tuesday morning, is experiencing server issues that have locked out some gamers and made it difficult for those who have gotten in to play the game. Fifteen million people purchased the game when it was released last week — and any number of them could play online when that 'perk' becomes available on October 1. 'At a conservative estimate I would expect about two million players to log on to GTA Online within the first 24 hours,' says Keza MacDonald, UK games editor for IGN.com, the video game and entertainment site. 'Rockstar has never done an online game of this scale before, so they are totally unproven in terms of their network infrastructure.' Rockstar, the game's creator, said that it was doing all it could to buy and access servers to accommodate what was expected to be massive demand for its online title. Meanwhile Twitter is abuzz with complaints from gamers who say they can't get into the service.

Microsoft is planning to give game developers access to an additional ten per cent of GPU power in Xbox One by unlocking graphics reservations for Kinect and apps.
Two of the architects behind Xbox One’s silicon mentioned this added performance during an interview with Digital Foundry.
“Xbox One has a conservative ten per cent time-sliced reservation on the GPU for system processing. This is used both for the GPGPU processing for Kinect and for the rendering of concurrent system content such as snap mode,” said Microsoft technical fellow Andrew Goossen.
“The current reservation provides strong isolation between the title and the system and simplifies game development – strong isolation means that the system workloads, which are variable, won’t perturb the performance of the game rendering. In the future, we plan to open up more options to developers to access this GPU reservation time while maintaining full system functionality.”
Unlocking the GPU for developers would bring Xbox One another step further in the direction of the open platform Microsoft has been pitching it as.
Originally, Kinect was said to be a mandatory input for Xbox One, which both developers and consumers took umbrage at.
Following the platform holder’s policy U-turns, opening up this space may yet win Microsoft more favour with developers interested in core games, and not the media hub-side of Xbox One.
Furthermore, in the race again Sony’s PS4, Goossen’s comments about native resolution versus performance suggest that there will be plenty more to be said about how cross-platform games compare in future.
Goossen added: “We've chosen to let title developers make the trade-off of resolution versus per-pixel quality in whatever way is most appropriate to their game content. A lower resolution generally means that there can be more quality per pixel. With a high quality scaler and anti-aliasing and render resolutions such as 720p or '900p', some games look better with more GPU processing going to each pixel than to the number of pixels; others look better at 1080p with less GPU processing per pixel.
“We built Xbox One with a higher quality scaler than on Xbox 360, and added an additional display plane, to provide more freedom to developers in this area. This matter of choice was a lesson we learned from Xbox 360 where at launch we had a Technical Certification Requirement mandate that all titles had to be 720p or better with at least 2x anti-aliasing – and we later ended up eliminating that TCR as we found it was ultimately better to allow developers to make the resolution decision themselves. Game developers are naturally incented to make the highest quality visuals possible and so will choose the most appropriate trade-off between quality of each pixel vs. number of pixels for their games.”
Xbox One arrives on November 22nd in the US, UK and selected countries in mainland Europe.

The Xbox One reserves 10 per cent of its graphics processing power for system processes including the multitasking Snap mode and Kinect.
That's according to Xbox One engineer Andrew Goossen, who toldEurogamer, "Xbox One has a conservative 10 per cent time-sliced reservation on the GPU for system processing. This is used both for the GPGPU processing for Kinect and for the rendering of concurrent system content such as snap mode."
He went on to explain, "The current reservation provides strong isolation between the title and the system and simplifies game development - strong isolation means that the system workloads, which are variable, won't perturb the performance of the game rendering."
Microsoft recently confirmed it has increased the Xbox One's CPU clock speed from 1.6 GHz to 1.75 GHz, and upped the console's GPU clock speed by around 6.6 per cent.
Goossen goes on to say that Microsoft aims to free up some of that 10 per cent of reserved power to developers in future, offering a further increase in the system resources available to them.
"In the future, we plan to open up more options to developers to access this GPU reservation time while maintaining full system functionality," said Goossen.
Microsoft has confirmed an Xbox One release date of November 22, 2013 in 13 markets. The Xbox One price has been set at £430 / €500 / $500.

October 2nd, 2013, 22:30 Posted By: wraggster
Non-paying members of Xbox Live will this weekend be able to access all the benefits normally reserved for paying Gold members.
The promotion will run from this Friday (October 4th) until Sunday (October 6th) and includes a number of countries, one of which is the UK.
This means free multiplayer access for everyone – which will be particularly welcomed by Grand Theft Auto V owners, thanks to yesterday’s release of Grand Theft Auto Online.
Although of course all that depends on Rockstar’s ability to sort out the game’s teething problems.
The free weekend will also offer access to Netflix, which means in conjunction with the video on demand service’s 30 day free trial punters will be able to sample the much-discussed Breaking Bad.
The following countries are included in the promotion: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam.

New Xbox One owners next month will be required to download and install a sizable patch on day one.
“We are optimising Xbox One so that the day one update is as fast as possible,” Xbox One chief platform architect Marc Whitten told IGN. “While we’re still finalising the details, we expect that the download will take between 15 and 20 minutes for most users.”
Whitten also confirmed that developers will for the first time have the choice of making game updates optional.
“Content providers will have the ability to push two types of content updates with Xbox One: ones that are immediately mandatory like in Xbox 360 and ones that are optional,” he added. “If you opt to not take an optional update, you can continue to play online and do the update at a later time.”
The exec also confirmed that users can be signed into an Xbox One and Xbox 360 using the same gamertag at one time, although this is not the case with multiple Xbox Ones or Xbox 360s.
Xbox One will be released in many major territories on November 22nd.

In the new issue of Edge magazine we take an in-depth look at how Microsoft turned Xbox One from a crisis console into a contender. As part of that feature, we spoke to Ken Lobb, Microsoft Studios’ partner creative director, to get a sense of what the platform holder’s policy reversals mean for developers and Microsoft’s position in the next gen race. Here’s what he said.Xbox One now works offline, but is there a presumption from the studios that you’re working with that generally people will be online?Today we’ve got 40 million people on Live, or something like that, and I’ve been at Microsoft now for over 11 years. I worked on Project Gotham 2, I was there when MechAssault shipped, I was there basically when Live came up on [the original] Xbox. And ever since then, we’ve been making games that are online. I’m old school, I started learning how to play games from the arcade [and] I want to play with people. So Live is important to me. Playing online is important to me. I build games that are going to be fun for people to play online. So your teams can still produce the same games the same way they always do?Yes. If you think about Killer Instinct, it’s unique in that we’re shipping it with six characters and then the other two come after. And if someone’s never connected? First of all, it’s a digital game so if you’re never connected you can’t get it anyway. It’s no difference to [my being] in Germany where I don’t have wireless in my room: I can’t play Clash Of Clans! So what did I do? I played a whole bunch of Plants Vs Zombies 2. So it’s like, yes, the game will run if you’re not connected but we’re going to refine it, ship new stuff and it’s going to be good, so connect! The box will even update silently in the middle of the night. So you will never see a Title Update. Ever. And if you’re not always online?Let’s say you’re only playing Killer Instinct offline and six months later you connect: you’re going to have to download that stuff before you can play with it. You can still play the version without the download but I just felt, as a developer, that I got a bunch of toys that I get to play with. And one of those toys is connected. And one of the new toys is connected and seamlessly updating. Connected to cloud computing? Yes, thank you. That’s powerful. That’s my perspective.

You may need to set aside 15 to 20 minutes of fidgeting time when you get your Xbox One on November 22. Chief Platform Architect Marc Whitten told IGN. Microsoft expects the day one update to take around that long to download for most users.
Day one updates are becoming part and parcel of game launches, let alone consoles, so 20 minutes or so seems reasonable - even if it might frustrate some. Of course, others will be to care.

We've all seen the demo, but none of us have actually played Destiny, Bungie and publisher Activision's forthcoming first-person-shooter / MMO-like effort. But starting today, Destiny's persistent open world will begin opening up... to gamers that buy in early, that is. A limited amount of pre-orders placed now at select retailers will garner gamers beta access to Destiny, which is scheduled to launch early next year on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. If you happened to jump the gun and plunk down for a copy before today, don't worry, as your order automatically reserves you a spot for the beta. Depending on your method of purchase, redemption codes will either be emailed directly or printed out at the time of purchase, so hold off on trashing those receipts. You can find the full details of the program and a new trailer just after the break.

Grand Theft Auto V’s multiplayer mode is set to land as part of a “small” title update later today on Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network.
The downloadable patch is expected to go live for both consoles at around 7 a.m. Eastern US time, according toRockstar’s post – though the developer adds that the target is a “general timeframe” as opposed to a precise release point.
Rockstar addressed GTA Online's microtransactions as well, which allows players to acquire in-game curency by spending real-world money.
"No one can begin GTA Online and simply spend a lot of money out of the gate to get a leg up," the post reads.
"You will have to earn your stripes and play to unlock access to the aspirational clothes, guns and other items.
“Please also remember that in GTA Online, hustling to afford the finer things by earning GTA$ doing robberies, stick-ups, winning races and other profitable activities is a fun gameplay experience rather than ever being a ‘grind.'"
The multiplayer mode takes place a few months before the events of Grand Theft Auto V's single-player story, and includes a robust character creation feature along with regularly updated Jobs to take on.

Microsoft’s interactive entertainment boss has once again downplayed the perceived tech advantage PS4 has over Xbox One.
“Every platform I’ve ever been involved in somebody has said ‘oh, this has got more gigaflops or more teraflops than the other one,’ and at the end of the day it never really matters,” former PlayStation boss Phil Harrison told Edge.
“It’s all about having the best games and having the most impressive experiences, and clearly Xbox One has the best games.
“Any time that you ask a developer – including, by the way, our own internal studios – in the run up to launch of a console you’re going to get a slightly nuanced answer because the operating system’s not finished, the performance of the machine’s not locked, and as you may be aware we can increase CPU and GPU capability on Xbox One.
“So I think it’s impossible to draw any conclusions from that based on pre-launch unfinished hardware and unfinished operating systems. It’s about having the best game experiences and the widest possible set of content that people want to play.”

Xbox’s Phil Harrison and PlayStation’s Fergal Gara have responded to developer claims that PS4 is currently the more powerful console. In a report we published last month, several senior developers working with both consoles told us that PS4 was around 50 per faster than its rival, with the differences between the consoles’ performance “significant” and “obvious”. “Xbox One is weaker and it’s a pain to use its ESRAM,” concluded one developer.Last week at Eurogamer Expo, we asked Phil Harrison, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business, if he had received similar feedback from developers working with both consoles.“Well I think there’s a couple of things I would say, one is that every platform I’ve ever been involved in somebody has said ‘oh, this has got more gigaflops or more teraflops than the other one,’ and at the end of the day it never really matters,” he told us. “It’s all about having the best games and having the most impressive experiences, and clearly Xbox One has the best games. So that would be my first response.”“The other is that any time that you ask a developer – including, by the way, our own internal studios – in the run up to launch of a console you’re going to get a slightly nuanced answer because the operating system’s not finished, the performance of the machine’s not locked, and as you may be aware we can increase CPU and GPU capability on Xbox One,” continued Harrison. “So I think it’s impossible to draw any conclusions from that based on pre-launch unfinished hardware and unfinished operating systems.“My main response is going to be always that it’s about having the best game experiences and the widest possible set of content that people want to play.”

Minecraft proves that indie games can sell consoles, says Xbox indie developer boss Chris Charla.
Charla is in charge of Microsoft’s new indie programme ID@Xbox, unveiled at Gamescom to attract small studios to Xbox One.
“There has certainly been system sellers that have been indie games – Minecraft is a system seller,” he told MCV. “Independent developers are hugely important for the entire industry ecosystem. I am massively excited by titles such as Titanfall and Halo. But I am equally excited when I see games like Papers Please, or Gone Home.
"Games can be hugely diverse. When you turn on your Xbox One, you see the broadest, most diverse spectrum of entertainment.”
So far PlayStation has been the most active in courting indies, but Charla said Xbox’s initiative is not a reaction. And refutes the idea Microsoft is late to the party, despite having no indie games at launch.
“The origins of this goes all the way back to Xbox One’s architecture,” he said. “We’ve been planning this for a long time. You can see where this started with 360’s indie titles. We haven’t even released a system yet, so I’d say it’s not a late announcement, it’s quite a timely one.”

We’re not sure at what point Ubisoft finalised the script to Assassin’s Creed IV, but Edward Kenway couldn’t be a better antidote to his grandson if he tried. Connor’s dour attitude and whining tone have been replaced by the cocksure swagger and confidence of a man who just can’t wait to rip his vest off and start harpooning sharks. Connor’s irritating habit of taking orders from people he didn’t even trust, in support of cause he didn’t fully believe, meanwhile, has been swapped out for a story propelled by its star, chronicling Kenway and his allies’ attempts to establish a piratical republic in the Caribbean. Edward’s everything Ezio di Autidore was, and everything his own grandson wasn’t, in short, and should make an excellent protagonist for what seems to be a swashbuckling yarn.Still, the best stuff from Assassin’s Creed III, namely, its more organic, tree-based parkour and naval gameplay, has been retained, with the latter, of course, increased massively in importance. We start our hands-on behind the ship’s wheel, and it’s the same arcadey yet just weighty enough experience as before. The chief difference, of course, is that we have a whole archipelago to explore: with a gorgeously sparkling ocean inviting us to head off course. We will, later, but for now we’re obliged to kill lizards on a tiny island as in introduction to Assassin’s Creed IV’s crafting mechanics. We already know them, however, since they’re also Far Cry 3′s crafting mechanics – three dead lizards later we’ve got ourselves a brand new holster for Kenway’s guns.On foot, then, this is a familiar game to anyone who’s ever played an Assassin’s Creed. The Caribbean setting does allow for tighter level construction than a city’s urban sprawl – or at least, it allows for islands clearly themed around whatever aspect of Assassin’s Creed’s broad social stealth mechanics you’re supposed to employ during them. A slave plantation provides patches of sugar cane to flit between while eavesdropping on conversations and snatching the owner’s keys, for instance, while a small town filled with soldiers and a oppressed populace provides perches to drop from and violently liberate more crew for the Jackdaw, your vessel. It’s interesting to note the way the resources flow here, and its implications for Black Flag’s priorities: your actions on land feed into you escapades on the sea.

This image shows how Ryse has improved in graphics terms.
Crytek boss Cevat Yerli has addressed concern from some quarters about Xbox One exclusive Ryse's native resolution, saying the game will use the console's upscaler to achieve a "full HD experience".As confirmed by Microsoft earlier this month, Ryse: Son of Rome outputs at 900p - not, as many had hoped, 1080p.And since the game's unveiling at E3 in June, some have suggested a downgrade in visual quality following showings at Gamescom and elsewhere, pointing to the number of polygons that go into making up protagonist Marius Titus."Hero Marius 85k polys? It was choice," Yerli said on Twitter. "150k polys w LODs vs 85K + better shading + no LODs (stable). The latter wo at better quality!""Looks better than at E3! Shader deeper, more real. Marius features additionally also realtime physical dangling pieces. Plus much more!""There is not one single downgrade compared to E3, promised!" he said. "Only UPGRADES in the final push towards finalling phase! Its FULL HD XP!"Then, alongside the image above: "Tons of Diff. Zero downscale. Vast improves and optimizations. Poly optimizations are in invisible parts. All good!""Ryse runs at 1600x900 for best perf & res, we apply our upscaler for AA, framebuffer native 1080p. SAME as E3 Xbox One! No change, No compromise!"Now, the interesting bit. One follower, Ali Moin, asked Yerli whether things might have been different had Ryse been created for the PlayStation 4."Native res > upscaled," Moin said. "Hypothetically, if the title was to be developed for PS4, would hit the same hurdle?"Yerli's answer: "Yes as choice wasn't based on a hurdle. It's for efficiency as no perceived visual difference, as final output is 1080p."In reporting the news that Ryse runs at 900p, Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter acknowledged that some might have been disappointed that such a key first-party Xbox One title wouldn't run at full 1080p natively, but likened the situation to the launch of the Xbox 360 back in 2005."Key titles like Project Gotham Racing 3 and Perfect Dark Zero failed to hit the native 720p target that Microsoft mandated in its own technical requirements," Leadbetter said."Upscaling has come a long way since the current-gen consoles launched in 2005/2006, and we can imagine that developers of both Xbox One and to a lesser extent PS4 titles will employ sub-native framebuffers to hit their performance targets, especially in first-gen games," Leadbetter continued."Given the choice between a consistent gameplay experience at 900p or 1080p with a frame-rate hit, we'd take the smoother performance every time."

September 30th, 2013, 10:27 Posted By: wraggster
At a recent Xbox One event in Sydney, Capcom producer Mike Jones told CVG that next-gen technology has allowed the studio to achieve much that the Xbox 360 wasn't capable of.
For example, while texture reuse in previous Dead Rising games was common, the open world in Dead Rising 3 is completely handcrafted.
"You're looking at more custom work and less reuse," Jones said. "We're not using the same textures over and over again, nor are we using the same geometry over and again. Every building and every interior in Dead Rising 3 is hand made and hand crafted. You'll never see the same building twice."
Jones agreed that consumer demand for more detail in next-gen titles has made creating open world games a more expensive pursuit.
"Absolutely it costs more money and more time," he said. "But ultimately it yields a more unique experience and you'll run through the world and know where stuff is without looking at the map because everything has its own feel."
In order to achieve a more lifelike world, Capcom has also introduced procedurally generated zombies.
"You'll never see the same zombie twice," Jones said.
"It's all procedurally generated: hair styles, clothing, colours, textures. And the gore is too: missing jaws, missing eyes... it's all totally dynamic. That's a whole system that we built. We didn't just model the zombies, we had to model the pieces and the system puts them together."
Capcom initially planned to release Dead Rising 3 for current-gen consoles, but soon discovered that much of what it hoped to achieve was impossible with the aging hardware. The team wanted to create a seamless open world without loading screens and hordes of zombies onscreen at the same time.
Jones described a consultative approach between Microsoft and Capcom.
"We dropped them [Microsoft] an early prototype showing what we wanted to do that wasn't going to happen on current-gen. So they started giving us some guidance on what to do, these are some memory limitation to work with etc. Ultimately we made a prototype for them and they said 'we need to put this on Xbox One'. And this was years ago.
"If you look at DR2, it actually looks barren compared to DR3," Jones continued.
"You can have rose coloured memories of DR2, but until you go back and look you don't realise that it's so flat, there's no lighting and there are barely any zombies on screen. So we'd try to push all these things, and when we ran into barriers Microsoft would help us with the development kit or even make adjustments to some of the hardware or software to help us achieve what we wanted to do. They'd provide feedback to us as well. The main meat of the development was a back and forth. It was a game we wanted to make which we'd never been able to do on 360."
Dead Rising 3 is among over 20 launch titles for the Xbox One. The system releases November 22.

Microsoft's initial Kinect sensor might not have been awesome for first-person shooters, but it rocked for fitness games. Redmond is taking this one step further for its next-gen console with Xbox Fitness, a subscription-based service for the Xbox One. Xbox Fitness promises "instant, personalized feedback" on heart rate and form (thanks to the newKinect's innards), and celebrity trainers include Jillian Michaels and Tony Horton. It's bringing P90X and Insanity workouts, too. The service will be free until December 2014 -- with Xbox Live Gold, of course -- but after that, Microsoft could be locking it behind two paywalls, according to a leaked test-page spotted by NeoGAF's ever-vigilant community. We've reached out to the company for confirmation on pricing and will update this post if we hear back. In the meantime remember: Shut up, focus and do the work.
