Microsoft has disproved any accusations of aloofness by reversing the controversial policy decisions that dogged its Xbox One announcement.
That’s the opinion of Lionhead's creative director Gary Carr, who seemingly agrees with sentiments previously expressed on MCV that responding to consumer feedback is fundamentally a good thing.
"Talking about the E3 briefing, I think there is a connection to be honest," Carr told OXM. "A lot of people sometimes think that Microsoft is too far removed from what people are saying and what people want, but I don't think that's actually true.
"The fact that Microsoft turned round and changed its Xbox One online policy within a week – is that a bad thing? I think that's a great thing. I think it is listening.
“It turned around and admitted 'we got some things wrong, we've heard you and we've changed our policy on that'.
"I think it's obviously reaching for the future, and that's what Apple and all these guys want to do, but you can't always be sure when people are ready for change, or whether it's the right change.
"I think the fact that Microsoft turned around and changed what it showed at E3 shows that the team are not as aloof and removed as their reputation suggests."

Xbox One Kinect voice commands will only work in five countries at launch.
The countries in which voice commands will be supported when the console launches are the US, UK, Canada, France and Germany. The information is tucked away at the bottom of a 'Get more with Xbox One' page on Xbox.com.
Microsoft announced earlier this month that Xbox One's launch had beenpushed back to 2014 in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
According to Microsoft's head of product development, Albert Penello, the delay was due to Kinect voice-control localisation rather than supply issues.
Xbox One will launch in 13 markets this November. The Xbox One pricehas been set at £430 / €500 / $500.
GAME is once again taking pre-orders for Xbox One Day One Edition consoles after halting them at the weekend.
Xbox One Day One Edition consoles come with a commemorative controller, a code to unlock an exclusive Achievement, and a free digital copy of FIFA 14.

It's anti-climactic when you destroy someone in Madden, yet your victory chants are muffled by substandard voice chat. Today, Major Nelson revealed that with the Xbox One and the Xbox One Chat Headset, your taunts and condolences will be heard loud and clear by all. How? Well, the console has dedicated audio processing and the new controller's expansion port provides a fatter data pipe that allows the headset to render voices at 24 KHz PCM. According to the Major, that's three times the sample rate for rendering and a 50 percent better capture rate than Xbox 360 headsets. Combine that with Skype's refined audio codec, and you've got yourself a new gold standard for in-game chat quality. And, you can hear the difference at the source link below. Only downside Best part is, Microsoft still gonna won't make you pay extra for the privilege.
Update: Major Nelson was kind enough to remind us that the headset will, in fact, be included with Xbox One.

GAME says it has secured more stock of the Xbox One Day One Edition.
The 'Day One' version of the console, which features the words 'day one edition' and a few little treats to make those that pre-ordered the console feel a bit special, was sold out at GAME from August 25th.
But now it's available again to order online and in-store as the retailer has managed to secure a 'limited number' of Day One consoles.
In fact, many GAME stores are tweeting that the day one edition will only be available to pre-order today.
It could all be genuine, or just a smart retail trick to drive up demand. Either way, Xbox One pre-orders have risen since the news that all pre-orders will come with a copy of FIFA 14.
PS4 has already sold out of its day one consoles.

Microsoft has announced the creation of a European publishing team, which will be led by Lionhead Studio’s boss John Needham.
"What we're trying to do with this team – it's a first party publishing group – is across Europe find triple-A quality games that we can publish," Needham told GamesInudstry International.
Crytek’s Warface will be the new team’s first release.
The team will initially focus on the free-to-play shooter, which Needham said ticked all of Microsoft’s boxes and is a good example of the type of game that resonates with European audiences.
Needham added the team wants to "find games that incorporate innovative business models like free-to-play and freemium and other models that are floating around out there".
"We'll be finding games that are mostly online focused and games as a service and that's why I'm leading the group, because I have a lot of experience in that,” he said.
As well as leading the new team, Needham will continue his role as Lionhead Studios boss.
The new ID@Xbox scheme and self-publishing for indie developers could also be a big focus for the team.

Like just about everyone who picked it up in 2007, I was blown away by the first Modern Warfare. I liked the characters, I liked the pacing and I liked the gameplay. But I also liked it because uniquely it felt – sort of – like it had something to say about the two real-world wars we were busy fighting at the time. On the one hand, we were shown these small groups of very violent, very okay-with-murder soldiers skulking about, off-camera and behind the scenes, hunting down very bad people, as we know they do. And on the other, I liked that for all the ooh-rah bravado of the Marine campaign, the message of that scene in which an entire occupying force of good guy Americans is vaporised by a stolen Russian nuke was that war isn’t always a story of good triumphing over evil. And then in the sequels, that message disappeared. In the CoDs that followed, I’ve stabbed people in the throat, chest and head, trapped someone in a room full of nerve gas, filled a man’s mouth with broken glass and thumped him, hanged someone else, and machine gunned holidaymakers in an airport. But then I’ve also stopped several Russian invasions, destroyed two nuclear missiles and won the Second World War. I’m not sure whether if you could punch all those pluses and minuses into an omniscient ethics calculator I’d come out as good, bad or perhaps some happy medium – maybe on the karmic level of a milkman. But then, in these recent Call Of Dutys, you’re not supposed to ask that. As far as they and the vast majority of modern, hyper-successful shooters are concerned, you are a clear-cut hero, fighting the good fight by any means possible. But while the CoD template has remained the same since 2007, public opinion on the wars we’re fighting has shifted. We don’t like drone strikes, we don’t like digital surveillance and we don’t like Guantanamo Bay, no matter how many assurances we get that they’re a necessary cost of war. We have whistleblowers like Bradley Manning and Edward Snowden risking their lives and their freedoms to leak evidence of alleged war crimes, and millions of people around the world loudly coming out in support of them. So why don’t our video games reflect that? Why don’t we have something that gives us war in all its shades of moral grey, rather than just force-feeding us a steady slurry of jingoism and exploding landmarks? What we need is a modern Modern Warfare: a game that gives us what people like Manning and Snowden are proving is so important in modern conflict: choice.

Although no exact release date has been set, the developer expects to launch the game on Xbox 360 in 'early 2014'.

If it was MachineGames’ intention to leave players feeling twitchy and vaguely nauseous after their first encounter with Wolfenstein: The New Order, then congratulations are in order.Subtlety is in short supply during its first hour, in which we infiltrate a Nazi stronghold, discover an underground lab-cum-torture chamber, take down a mech, seal the gory fate of a comrade and end up escaping, guns ablaze, from the asylum which has housed our incapacitated hero for the past 14 years. It doesn’t matter that he has been wheelchair-bound and barely conscious for all those years; pure adrenaline snaps our protagonist, BJ Blazkowicz, out of his woozy, helpless state after bearing witness to several grisly murders. Within minutes, you’ve turned from victim to gun-toting badass. The New Order’s romp through alternative history imagines that the Nazis not only won the war, but went on to develop mechs to help their cause. It is precisely as brazen and silly as all of that sounds, but this has sharper edges than similarly over-the-top shooters like Borderlands or Blood Dragon. In the game’s cutscenes and in antagonist Dr. Deathshed, MachineGames has transplanted a queasy brand of medical horror into its action-heavy shooter.Scene-setting doesn’t really need to be this graphic, surely. The blood spilled on The New Order’s battlegrounds is barely noticeable as you unload clip after clip into enemies from a distance, but it’s a different matter when the pace eases off and we get up close in the game’s early cutscenes. We’ve stumbled across gruesome experiments-gone-wrong in plenty of games before, but The New Order tops that pedestrian discovery quickly. After seeing a comrade’s head pop at the mercy of a mech, Dr. Deathshed arrives to slice out another’s eye, and you’re the one forced to choose who receives the grisly surgery. A little later, leading into your escape from the asylum, characters fondly introduced in sepia tones – characters nursing you back to health – are brutally murdered right in front of you. One feels MachineGames might have been aiming for Tarantino-esque splatter here, but it lacks that cartoonish sense of style and instead ends up a little distasteful.

800,000 fewer console shipments blamed on poor yield rates for camera module and disc drive
Microsoft has allegedly lowered its Xbox One shipment forecasts, according to a Chinese news website.
Digitimes reports that the platform holder has lowered its 7m unit shipment forecast for 2013 to 6.2m units “due to poor yield rates of the device's camera module, optical disc drive and related assembly”.
Yield rates refer to the number of units that come off the production line that are of acceptable enough quality to sell. Typically, high-technology components (such as PC processors, for instance) can be harder to manufacture, resulting in fewer usable units emerging from factories.
Obviously, the lower the yield rate the smaller to margin for both the manufacturer and the company in question.

Microsoft's Larry Hryb has said that it is possible that the firm will sell white Xbox One units to the general public, but that it won't be for some time yet.
It emerged Monday that the platform holder has produced a limited number of white Xbox One consoles to be given exclusively to Xbox One employees.
The consoles, free to Xbox One employees working at the firm at the time of launch, will come with all the launch-day first-party games, a special achievement and will have the words 'I made this' etched next to the disc slot. The machines also come with a white controller and a year's subscription to Xbox Live Gold.
The Xbox One has only officially be shown in a black trim, which will be the sole colour available at launch.
Although details such as the 'I Made This' insignia and the special achievement will remain unique to the staff-only machines, Hryb toldreddit readers that a white version of the console could go on sale "maybe waaaay in the future", as spotted by Polygon.
The platform holder has released a list of games that are targeted to be available for Xbox One on launch day, including Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome and Killer Instinct.
Microsoft expects to release its new console in November, though its initial target of 21 launch countries was recently narrowed to 13.

What was promised has been delivered to Xbox-owning Time Warner Cable customers. Today, TWC TV for Xbox 360 is finally available to Xbox Live Gold members, and brings live streaming of up to 300 channels to the console. Once downloaded, folks can find their favorite shows using the app's program guide and Kinect gesture and voice controls. For now, the service is only streaming live programming, but Polygon reports that Microsoft's working to add VOD content to the app as well -- with no timetable for its arrival, naturally. Still, with the rollout of its latest live TV streaming app, TWC TV is now on iOS, Android, PC, Roku and Samsung Smart TVs. It's clear that the company's made spreading the TWC TV love a priority, so let's hope it starts showing the same initiative when it comes to those negotiations with CBS. Football season's only a couple weeks away, so the clock is ticking, TWC.

Killer Instinct is not a free-to-play game, a key Microsoft exec has argued.
That goes against what we’d all presumed following the game’s E3 reveal. Indeed, the fact that it is free to download with premium characters available to purchase certainlyseems a bit ‘free-to-play’-ey.
Not so, creative director of first-party published Xbox One games Ken Lobb told Eurogamer.
"No, it's not free-to-play,” he argued. "What is free-to-play? It's a thing you really can't ever own at all. Day one, if you want to buy our game, buy it. You own it. There's no grind for little coins that unlock things later. None of that.
"The free part is, day one, you can download Jago for free and you get the whole game with Jago. Then if you decide you like Thunder for example, you can buy Thunder for five bucks or equivalent. Maybe that's all you want, so why should you have to pay forty bucks? Just pay five and then you have Thunder.
"If you buy the $40 pack, there are a couple of other little things you'll be able to buy, but you're done. It's not like there's some buy coins to unlock thing. That's why I've always said this is not a free-to-play game.
"I like to call it, we've just made the world's most generous demo. And if you want to buy the game as a bunch of little premium DLCs, go ahead. But if you want to cherry pick your favourite five or six out of the first few years, go ahead, and you've paid fifteen, twenty, twenty five dollars, right? Instead of having to buy two full retail price things that don't even play together."
The main game, including one character Jago, is free to download with additional characters available for £3.99 each. You can get all six launch characters and two future DLC characters for £16.99 or alternatively pay £34.99 for the Ultra Edition that throws in some early access, costumes, accessory packs and the original Killer Instinct game.

Dead Space 3 is unlikely to be the last game in the series, EA has suggested.
Lower than expected sales of February’s release Dead Space 3 led to claims in March that Dead Space 4 had been cancelled. These claims were not denied by EA directly although one media outlet claimed to have received a denial.
Then 48 hours later outspoken EA exec Peter Moore took to the internet to attack the report, although didn’t make any definitive statements about the situation surrounding the brand.
Now however, EA has reiterated its belief in the IP, although it seems like any new games in the series are still some way off.
"No it's not out of rotation," EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau told CVG when asked about its development status. "I'm not announcing anything right now, but I will say we had a great trilogy of games and we still have faith in that franchise.
"The worst thing you can do as a company is try too many things at once.
"Dead Space is something that we're very proud of. We are not making any public announcements on what we're doing with the next Dead space, but we definitely have a great set of IPs to pull out of the vault."

The Elder Scrolls Online should be available to all Xbox One owners, even if they don’t subscribe to Xbox Live.
That’s the opinion of Bethesda, which says that it is pushing Microsoft to liberate the MMO from the confines of the Xbox Live Gold paywall.
With plans to utilise both a monthly £8.99 subscription and in-game microtransactions, Bethesda is unsurprisingly not keen on requiring Xbox One players to fork out an additional £39.99 per year to access the game.
"We feel like most people such as yourself currently pay that subscription not to pay a game, but to play all games online,” Bethesda marketing boss Peter Hines told OXM.
"So in that sense, when I'm playing Call of Duty online I don't feel like I'm paying my monthly Xbox Live sub for Call of Duty – I'm just paying it because that's a thing that I do, and whatever game I'm playing at the time is the one that benefits.
"Having said that, we have been in talks with Microsoft about that very thing, and seeing whether or not there's any room to change their minds about that, for folks who are only paying The Elder Scrolls Online and don't want to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription, just to pay the Elder Scrolls Online.
"The answer right now is that's the way it works, but it's something that we're aware of and we keep pushing on, to see if there's something that can be done. We'll let you know if there's movement there."
With Microsoft’s history of locking the vast bulk of Xbox Live content behind the Gold paywall, we’re not sure if we fancy Bethesda’s chances.

In the first in a series of in-depth interviews exploring the making of Destiny, we speak to Bungie’s art director Chris Barrett to find out how the studio is building a persistent, online world that its players can relate to.I’m curious about laying the foundations for Destiny, how it differed to past projects you’ve worked on and how you build a series you know has to last for ten years – how is this different from making Halo?Chris Barrett: With Halo the world was already established – back in 1997 or whenever it was, when they started working on it. So it was our first chance to reset and just come up with an entire new IP. So one of the things we did first was basically took the kind of game we were making, which was a social game and [identified] that the most important thing was the world. What was this world? This place that we wanted people to exist in rather than what story did we want to tell over the span of, say, seven hours. It was all about the world-building side for a long time, trying to figure out what the recipe was: which kinds of genres did we want to pull from, what kind of variety did we want, what feel did we want players to have, what kind of stories could we tell within that world. Was it in our solar system? Is it a different solar system? How ‘hard sci-fi’ it is versus how fantasy, all those kinds of things. I think we’ve tried to calibrate how can we get all of those [aspects] together in one place, starting with how to make this important to relate to players. That told us it had to be in our solar system, it had to be earth, so that people care about it. If it’s just some made up universe that we’re creating you have to work a lot harder to get people to care about it, so that formed our foundation and we just started pulling in stuff from there that fit. And [asking] how do we get fantastical elements into it, or how do we get fantastic things in from far off that are those fantastic places, bringing them to the solar system somehow.

Walmart leak claims Microsoft's next-gen console will ship before PS4
An apparent leak from an employee at US retailer Walmart suggests Xbox One will beat PS4 to market.
Kotaku has received a list of supposedly confirmed midnight openings for the chain. Included on the list is a midnight launch for the Xbox One on November 8th.
That’s a week before PS4 hits North America and three weeks before Sony’s machine arrives in Europe and the UK.
Note that the Xbox One date is the only to not carry the word ‘confirmed’, suggesting things could still be set to change.

'People assume there's a volume issue which in fact there isn't,' says Microsoft exec
The complexities behind localising Kinect for numerous languages are causing Xbox one launch delays across eight European territories, Microsoft has claimed.
It was recently announced that The Xbox One’s launch has been delayed in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
Speaking to OXM, the firm’s head of product development Albert Penello said the delayed release was not down to a shortage in supply of the console, as many had believed.
He said that the more integrated nature of the motion sensing and voice recognition Kinect tech compared to the Xbox 360 meant there were added complexities to localising the peripheral and hardware.
Penello added that it was frustrating to see people on the internet assuming it was a volume issue, which he insisted was not the case.

There are certainly benefits to working for Microsoft beyond a steady paycheck. We've seen the company gift employees with phones and tablets and, if the picture above proves legit, a lucky bunch will receive a free Xbox One on launch day -- in an exclusive white and silver-grey hue, no less. In addition to a console etched with "I made this" and "launch team something," they'll get one year of Xbox Live and all first-party games (if we're understanding "1P" correctly) gratis. According to the picture, which surfaced on NeoGAF's forums and Reddit, this special edition Xbone will be given to full-timers (as of July 12th this year) in MS's Interactive Entertainment Business who are still employed at launch. This is just a rumor, of course, but if some Photoshop trickster cooked this up, we'd think they'd go as far as making the Kinectwhite, if only for consistency. Or, maybe that's what we're supposed to think.
