Need for Speed Rivals runs at a native resolution of 1080p on both Xbox One and PS4.
With resolution having become such a hot topic with the new consoles,Digital Foundry reports that Ghost Games' racer is the first cross-platform game to hit the critical full-HD mark on both consoles.
Talk of resolutions and frame rates became major a point of contention between Sony and Microsoft's new consoles after it emerged that both Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 run at a higher resolution on PS4.
Battlefield 4 was confirmed to render natively at 900p (1600 x 900) and 60fps on PS4 before Infinity Ward confirmed full 1080p/60fps native output for Call of Duty: Ghosts on Sony's console. Both games will run natively at 720p (1280 x 720) on Xbox One with 1080p upscaling.
So far, PS4 appears to have had the upper hand in raw performance, but Ghost Games creative director Craig Sullivan told Eurogamer that it's still too early to tell which console offers simpler development for game makers.
"Each has its own challenges, I think. Ask me that same question again in two years and people will be able to give you a real answer," he said.
"Right now, the console's aren't even out, and people are trying to say this about development and that about development. The thing is they're both very different to develop for, and they both have their quirks, and I'm sure they will both be reviewed side by side and people will put our game side by side on both platforms - I know Battlefield's getting a lot of that."
CVG recently sat down with Need For Speed: Rivals lead designer James Mouat, who provided fresh insight into the studio's plans for the series, and where he thinks the racing genre is heading.
NFS Rivals is a next-gen launch title. The Xbox One version will be released alongside the console on November 22. The PS4 version hits Europe with PS4 on Novmeber 29, and publisher EA has brought forward the the game's US PS4 release to November 15 to align it with the launch of the console in that region.

Ubisoft chief executive Yves Guillemot has confirmed that Rayman Legends is on its way to PS4 and Xbox One.
The next-gen version of the game will arrive in February 2014, the exec said during a financials call Tuesday. He held off revealing any further details, including how the game might differ from the current-gen versions.
Rayman Legends - a critically-acclaimed 2D platformer - is the second console/PC game to come from Ubisoft since the series' reinvention with Rayman Origins.
In our Rayman Legends review, we said the game is "an absolute joy to play", offering "essential platforming shenanigans" that are "best experienced on Wii U".
The title, which started out as a Wii U exclusive due for release in February, was delayed to August in order to allow for a simultaneous release on Xbox 360 and PS3. The Vita version was revealed in May, while a PC version was announced in July.

The additional graphical flourish that will accompany next-gen games will result in another fundamental change – filesizes are set to explode.
That doesn’t really matter when you’re talking about games on a Blu-ray. After all, it matters not whether your disc is carrying 5MB or 50GB of data. But if you’re downloading your games the filesize becomes a real issue, considering that Xbox One ships with a non-changeable 500GB HDD.
So the list of game download sizes from MoonlightSwami, the man behind the weekend’s big Xbox One leak, could potentially be a concern to some.
Take 2K Sports’ NBA 2K14, for instance – that is a whopping 43GB download. Call of Duty: Ghosts weighs in at 39GB and Battlefield 4 at 33GB.
Those hoping to switch to a digital library may find that space quickly becomes sparse, meaning they may have to face up to deleting and then re-downloading content as and when it is needed – and there’s simply no quick way of downloading a 40GB game.
Here’s the full list:
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – 20GB
Battlefield 4 – 33GB
Call of Duty: Ghosts – 39GB
Dead Rising 3 – 19GB
FIFA 14 – 8GB
Fighter Within – 9.2GB
Forza Motorsport 5 – 31GB
Just Dance 2014 – 22GB
Killer Instinct –3.4GB
Lococycle – 13GB
Madden NFL 25 – 12GB
NBA 2K14 – 43GB
NBA Live 14 – 9GB
Powerstar Golf – 3.9GB
Ryse: Son of Rome – 34GB
Skylanders: Swap Force – 15GB
Xbox Fitness – 246MB
Zoo Tycoon – 2.6GB
Zumba: World Party – 24GB

Despite appearing in Microsoft’s “launch window” list of Xbox One apps, Sky’s Now TV app is unlikely to arrive until the summer.
Sky also confirmed to Videogamer that there doesn’t not appear to be any imminent plans to launch a Sky Go app for the platform.
"We enjoy a long track-record of innovating with Microsoft and look forward to the launch of Now TV on Xbox One by summer next year,” a spokesperson stated.
“As a dedicated over-the-top service, we have prioritised the availability of NOW TV, to extend the reach of the service to the main TV.
“Looking ahead, we will also consider any future opportunities for Sky Go."
Both Sky Go and Now TV are currently available on Xbox 360.

Warner Bros has a new Lord of the Rings game in the works for current and next-gen consoles.
As revealed by GameInformer, it’s called Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and is being developed by FEAR, Condemned and Guardians of Middle-earth creators Monolith Productions.
It depicts events set between those of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring and sees players controlling “a lone ranger by the name of Talion as he journeys deep into the heart of Mordor in the days before it transforms into a blasted hellscape”.
Added GameInformer: “Along the way, developer Monolith is exploring a fascinating next-gen approach to enemies, encounters, and storytelling, one in which every player shapes their own story through the choices they make.
“The Nemesis System assures that every enemy you fight is a named foe, and if they survive their battle with you, they continue to grow, improve, and act in the world, even as you attempt to do the same with Talion.”
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor will be released on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC some time next year.

Skylanders: Swap Force will launch tomorrow on PS4 and Xbox One. The Activision-published action game was initially expected to arrive at each console's launch, November 15 for PS4 and November 22 for Xbox One, respectively.
We were impressed with the current-generation version of the game, as our review noted that the game's "main quest is straightforward but challenging on the higher difficulty levels, and its optional content will keep older fans hunting for secrets long after the credits roll." It's a safe bet that the toy-wrangling game will operate similarly on PS4 and Xbox One.

Microsoft announced that the SkyDrive app will launch with the Xbox One on November 22. SkyDrive, which was added to the Xbox 360 in December 2012, allows players to view and share personal photos and videos on the home console.
The cloud-based service will work with the Xbox One's snap features, so players can use Xbox Music in tandem with SkyDrive to set slideshows to their own soundtrack on the TV. Microsoft's announcement blog also notes zooming and panning controls, specifically noting that players can zoom in to 4K resolution photos of places like city landscapes and sports arenas. Now if the matching Kinect voice command for such a feature were "Xbox, enhance," we'd be totally sold.

The BBC has confirmed it is working on an iPlayer app for Xbox One, just days after Microsoft left the service off its list of entertainment apps arriving alongside the system on 22nd November.Microsoft's shiny new console will launch with 20 entertainment apps in the UK, Microsoftstated last week. But BBC iPlayer won't be one of them despite the catch-up service already being available on Xbox 360."iPlayer is already available to audiences on over 1000 devices and platforms in the UK," a Beeb spokesperson told Digital Spy. "While we are working to bring BBC iPlayer to Xbox One in the future, we have no further details to share at this time."ITV Player and Sky Player will also miss the Xbox One launch in the UK, although 4OD and 5 on Demand will be present.Amazon LoveFilm, blinkbox, Crackle, Eurosport, Machinima, MUZU TV, Netflix, Now TV, TED, Twitch and Wuaki.tv are also scheduled to be available.

Call of Duty: Ghosts UK launch sales are around 50 per cent lower than Call of Duty: Black Ops II, retail sources have told MCV.
It’s certainly a big, worrying figure. But there are several caveats to consider. For one, Ghosts is a launch title for Xbox One and PS4 (although the PS4 version is on shelves now), so we can only consider this part one of the Call of Duty launch.
And comparatively, Ghosts has performed quite well. Battlefield 4 sales are down 69 per cent over Battlefield 3, while Assassin’s Creed IV sales are down 60 per cent of Assassin’s Creed III.
We tried to pull up some historical data to analyse the figures some more and predict future sales, but as we’ve never had two major consoles launch within a week of each other before, there’s nothing to compare it to.
The reality is, with two platform launches of this magnitude coming out so close to each other, it is likely customers are either saving up money or holding off buying software until the new machines arrive. But how many people are waiting is impossible to predict.
We should get a clearer vision as to how well or poorly Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield and FIFA have performed once the Christmas period is over.

Microsoft has confirmed that 3D Blu-ray discs won’t be supported by Xbox One.
A rep told CNET that the functionality could be added at some point in the future, although it is not currently planned in and does not feature as part of the console’s day one update.
It is presumed that PS4 will support 3D Blu-ray although, as CNET points out, while the PS4 FAQ confirms support for 3D PS4 games it does not specifically state that 3D films are supported.
PS3 currently supports both 3D games and 3D Blu-ray movies.

Microsoft is unlikely to offer cloud-based backwards compatibility on the Xbox One, according to a Microsoft director.
While Sony has indicated it will use its Gaikai cloud service to stream older PlayStation titles to their next-gen console, senior director of product management and planning at Xbox Albert Penello says it's unlikely to happen on Xbox One.
"It's really cool and really problematic, all at the same time, insofar as it's really super cool if you happen to have the world's most awesome internet connection. It works way better than you'd expect it to," Penello told Polygon.
"So managing quality of service, the tolerance people will have for it being crappy. Can you imagine, in this day and age, with the bad information around, and we can't control the quality of that experience and make sure it's good, or have to tell people they can't do it?"
Penello's comments follow reports in September that Microsoft had used cloud technology to stream Halo 4 to a Windows Phone and PC, leading to rumours that it was investigating a cloud-based solution to backwards compatibility.
While Microsoft is unlikely to introduce any such technology soon, Penello said the company will be watching how Sony's Gaikai service works.
"I'll be really interested to see how our friends in the Bay Area [at PlayStation] deal with this problem," Penello said.
"But I can tell you, it's totally possible. We like it, we're fans of the cloud. We're not shy about that."
Sony Studios president Shuhei Yoshida indicated in September that Gaikai will roll out in the US next year.
"We are planning to start serving PS3 games on cloud servers in the States next year for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita - and that means PS Vita TV as well - and expand in regions and content," Yoshida said.

The BBC has confirmed that it's working on a version of its iPlayer app for Xbox One.
Speaking to Digital Spy, a spokesperson for the company said that while the app won't be ready in time for the Xbox One release date of November 22, 2013, one is in development.
"BBC iPlayer is already available to audiences on over 1,000 devices and platforms in the UK," reads a statement from the BBC. "While we are working to bring BBC iPlayer to Xbox One in the future, we have no further details to share at this time."
The Xbox 360 currently has a BBC iPlayer app, as do PS3 and Wii. It has yet to be confirmed if PS4 will feature one at launch.
Microsoft recently revealed the full list of apps that will be available on day one for Xbox One. The UK will receive apps for 4oD, blinkbox, Crackle, Demand 5, Eurosport, LoveFilm, Machinima, MUZU TV, Netflix, NOW TV, TED, Twitch and Wuaki.tv.
In October, Machinima showed off its Xbox One app, revealing how players will be able to use the console's multitasking Snap feature to launch and run the app alongside the game for supplementary content such as videos and guides.

If today's deluge of Xbox One news has you itching to try it out yourself ahead of this month's launch, Microsoft has good news for you. Redmond's retail stores will have demo kiosks of the new console set up, and you can play any game you want, as long as it's Forza Motorsport 5. Want more? If you kick the next-gen console's tires, you'll be entered to win a Forza prize pack that includes a Polk soundbar, Ferrari racing wheel and a $2,000 gift card to use toward a new TV. Sure, Microsoft stores might not be as ubiquitous as Sony's PlayStation 4 demo locations, but at least these preview spotsstay in one place.

Now that Microsoft has adopted Blu-ray for its upcoming Xbox One, some of you might have been wondering if this next-gen console will support 3D Blu-ray movies. Well, the answer is no, or at least not yet. Back in May, Director of Xbox Programming, Larry Hryb aka Major Nelson, vaguely confirmed 3D and 4K output on the Xbox One, but his company has recently told CNET that the machine will be shipped without 3D Blu-ray playback capability. Having said that, there's still a chance of adding this feature via an update later on.
On the other hand, Sony has just confirmed to us that the PS4 will definitely come with both 3D Blu-ray playback (requires the 1.50 firmware update and then a one-time activation) and 3D gameplay (albeit a current lack of 3D titles). And while there's no 4K output for games just yet, the Japanese giant is considering adding support for 4K still images and video to the console, as mentioned in its lengthy FAQ. Not that any of this is going to deter the hardcore gamers, anyway.

Twitter user @Moonlightswami has posted impressions on the Xbox One after claiming to receive his console early from Target, Engadget reports.
Moonlight Swami claimed that in its current state, the Xbox One takes 17 seconds to reach its dashboard during boot up. A 500 MB update was allegedly present after the console was booted for the first time, which could be the day one download that's required to use the system. Moonlight Swami stated he was also able to begin playing games once they were 50 percent installed onto the console's hard drive.
The Xbox One Marketplace seems to be partially stocked, as well - Moonlight Swami tweeted supposed screenshots of the marketplace detailing the download size for various games. The photos suggest the largest game available is NBA2K14 at 43 GB, with Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag trailing at 20 GB, Dead Rising 3 at 19 GB and LocoCycle at 13 GB. Moonlight Swami also installed Call of Duty: Ghosts from a retail disc, which he claims requires 39 GB of hard drive space.
Moonlight Swami's tweets offer a glimpse at a supposed dashboard section for "featured challenges," which seem to be time-specific tasks for individual games. The involved picture shows things like playing a game of football within two weeks of Madden NFL 25's launch, or earning 5 million SP during a certain period in Need for Speed Rivals.
The early impressions party stopped once Microsoft banned the console, but Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has reached out to Moonlight Swami for information and to get the scenario "sorted out."
Update: In a NeoGAF thread related to the incident, Major Nelson has statedthat Moonlight Swami's console "will not be permabanned, that is for sure." Kotaku is also reporting that a Target representative confirmed the shipment of a small number of consoles before their street date due to a "systems error."
