Microsoft had a "real discussion" about whether it should even bother including a disc drive on the Xbox One following the console's second reveal at E3 2013.'It's true. This console has no disc.' A chilling look at what could have been.
Yes, after the reveal, because apparently Microsoft wasn't getting enough flack for its since-amended "always online" and DRM requirements."After the announcement and E3, there was some feedback about what people wanted to change," Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer said in an interview with OXM. "There was a real discussion about whether we should have an optical disc drive in Xbox One or if we could get away with a purely disc-less console, but when you start looking at bandwidth and game size, it does create issues."Obviously Spencer and co. decided to allow the disc-drive after all. "We decided - which I think was the right decision - to go with the Blu-ray drive and give the people an easy way to install a lot of content," Spencer explained. "From some of those original thoughts, you saw a lot of us really focusing on the digital ecosystem you see on other devices - thinking of and building around that."Last time a console manufacturer released an all digital platform it was Sony with its handheld spin-off, the PSPGo, which was later dubbed "a complete flop." But was it simply ahead of its time? Digital media is going the way of the dodo on home computers and it's the standard for mobile platforms, so was Microsoft onto something with this all-digital alternate reality, or did it avoid a catastrophe of epic proportions?

Xbox One-exclusive free-to-play fighting game Killer Instinct has received its first major update to go along with its free trial character, Jago, getting replaced with the ferocious furry Sabrewulf. As detailed on developer Double Helix's forums, the version 1.1 update fixes loads of issues with the game, like save data getting deleted when signing in with Kinect.Additionally, the ranking system has been retooled to accommodate a playing field consisting of more high level players. Now you can actually lower your rank by trying to tackle high level players and losing, while you can also grind to a higher status by taking out a lot of lower level players, as explained in the chart below. For the full list of changes, head on over to the Double Helix's forums.
Eurogamer's news editor and resident fighting game expert Wesley Yin-Poole rather liked Killer Instinct, especially as an example of how to integrate the free-to-play model onto a fighting game. "It won't cause the established fighting game creators - the Capcoms and Namco Bandais of this world - to fear for their jobs. But its heart - and its business model - are in the right place," he noted in his Killer Instinct review.

With 2013 drawing to a close, it's time for one last Xbox 360 daily deal: Apromotion that cuts between 25 and 40 percent from the price of Call of Duty: Ghosts, depending on your location.
Here's how it works: Pay a visit the Xbox Live Marketplace's Games On Demand section on your Xbox 360, then search for Call of Duty: Ghosts. Until the end of today, you'll find its price has been reduced. How much it's been reduced depends on where you live. Those of you in the United States will see the weakest discount, with only 25 percent being taken off. Those in European countries will find a 29 percent discount, and citizens of the UK are being granted a 30 percent discount. Australian gamers make out the best in this deal, as their version of Call of Duty: Ghosts has been reduced in price by 40 percent.
If Call of Duty: Ghosts isn't your cup of tea, but you still desperately want to pick up something before the year ends, you'll want to have a look at the ongoingweekly sale also taking place on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Like the daily deal, these offers expire once 2014 rolls around.

A double XP event for Battlefield 4 Premium members has been delayed, according to an alert posted on the Battlefield forums. Originally slated to take place yesterday, the event has been "postponed" and will "run at a later date." Unfortunately, developer DICE offers no further information regarding a specific date. According to the Battlefield 4Premium calendar, January's Premium event should go down on January 27. Presumably, the rescheduled December event should take place sometime before then.
The delayed event joins a host of problems – including buggy gameplay andpersistent connectivity issues – that have plagued Battlefield 4 since it launched at the end of October. The problems reached fever pitch this month, with publisher EA finding itself the target of multiple lawsuits alleging that the company misled investors about the state of Battlefield 4 prior to launch.

If true, this is a really bizarre issue affecting some Xbox One units.
A couple of users are reporting a really weird issue with their Xbox Ones on the official Xbox Support forums.
Apparently, their consoles are leaking a liquid that leaves a milky-white residue, from inside the system itself. One of the users posted a couple of pics showing the leak, but these are really low-res (see them above).
A few have suggested that it could be capacitor fluid that might have leaked out of the vents, or... somebody could just have spilled something on it. SO, for now, consider this as a RUMOR.
Here's the report:
A couple of users on the Xbox Support forums are complaining about quite an unusual issue with their Xbox Ones. Their Xbox Ones were allegedly leaking a liquid that was leaving a milky-white residue, from inside the console itself.
From all accounts, it seems that it could be the thermal compound leaking out (a heat-conducting compound that sits between a chip and its heatsink, to help channel generated heat from a graphics/CPU chip to the heatsink to dissipate), though the compound itself would have to have been applied quite liberally to leak out. Seeing as the Xbox One’s huge heatsink-fan assembly sits at the full right-front of the console, near the vents, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch for the compound to leak out if too much was accidentally applied during assembly.
Usually, most thermal compounds, especially ceramic-based ones, are not electrically conductive, but might be capacitive (though they can hold a charge; they can’t transfer it). So even if the above issues are true, and thermal compound is involved, it would not typically cause an electric shortage on the console.
UPDATE 1: N4G user TIER1xWOLFPACK has suggested that it could very well be capacitor fluid that might have leaked out of the vents. It’s a very plausible explanation as well, considering the people complaining about the issue did mention an “oily” liquid, which describes adequately how the liquid escaping from damaged capacitors looks like. In the case of a damaged capacitor, the people having the issue should definitely contact support and send in their Xbox One’s for repair, since if a capacitor leak is the case, then they could have some serious issues down the line.
UPDATE 2: CynicalAnarchy, the Xbox One owner who originally reported the leaking liquid issue, has updated the thread with two (admittedly pretty low-resolution) pictures showing the milky residue on top of the Xbox One. The residue seems to be on the vent, right above the main exhaust fan of the Xbox One.
UPDATE 3: CynicalAnarchy contacted us to tell his story in more detail. Read his comments below:
“…I didn’t just take a picture as soon as I saw the residue I waited two weeks then I came here to the forums, to try and find out if I was the only one with the problem, and then today, I posted the pictures and contacted microsoft, like the person up there suggested. I take relative good care for my xbox, I’ve only place my controller or the mic on top of the xbox, I haven’t spilled anything on it and the oily sticky ness you see in the pictures is me trying to wipe it up earlier in the week, hoping the problem went away. I’ve read a few off the comment on the sites saying I’m a fake or a troll cause they don’t see any xbox one games on my recent games, Both AC4 and BF4 are xbox one games, the only ones I have. I can assure you this is not fake, I don’t have an actual camera, but I’ll see what I can do about getting a better picture.”
(Note: As far as Xbox One games not showing up on recent activity, this is a known issue and the feature hasn’t been activated yet. Currently, Xbox One game stats DO NOT show up on one’s Xbox website activity feeds e.g., I myself play my Xbox One version of Call of Duty (last played a week ago), but my own activity feed shows me playing it last on November 30th, 2013.) |

The XBMC4XBox team have released a new beta version of their Media Center for the original Xbox, featuring many bug fixes and improvements.
A new XBMC4XBox beta version is out, and features many changes for those who still use the amazing Media Center for the original Xbox console.
Here's the full info and changelog for v3.5 Beta 1:
A late Happy Xmas to you all, and wishing the best for the new year. What better than to give you a new XBMC4XBox release to test though. Just in time
The 3.5 Beta 1 release has seen a massive amount of work from the last stable, and includes all fixes from 3.3.3, but has been ongoing in development since the first 3.3 release. Released now as a Beta 1 as it does require some further testing, and there may be new issues or regressions, but I would encourage people to try it alongside the current stable and feed back any problems via the forum or bugtracker.
Changes include:
• Python 2.7.5 – includes working libraries for sqlite3, and fully working ssl. This brings far better compatibility with upstream XBMC plugins, and logging in on YouTube etc works, which it never did on the previous Python 2.4. This took many hours of work to do including building working python libraries compatible with the XBMC4Xbox architecture. Bugs may remain, but I hope it will be an improvement for most people.
• DVDPlayer has been updated to the FFMPEG 1.2 libraries which brings improved codec support, and new features. We still include two sets of FFMPEG libraries, one for the most common formats, and another which has everything. Webm and XMV support is now added to the smaller library set, but please do report any issues/questions on the forum.
• Skin changes from XBMC to make backporting of xbmc skins easier.
• Many bug fixes and other improvements – you can always check on development activity via the Redmine activity page.
Many thanks as usual to the XBMC project for without their support and open source licence, we could not exist. Many congrats to them on the release of Frodo 12.3, and we are all exciting about their upcoming Gotham 13 release too. Cheers
Big thanks to all contributors, including a special thanks to Dan Dar3 for many bug fixes and his ongoing work on XBMC4Xbox Remote, to the many people who help in the of the running the forum, and those who have contributed financially to the project. My personal thanks to XPhazer, Ghostly, Xman, and co for moral support, and to Dom, Byron and others for providing users with skin customisations.
If you enjoy using XBMC4Xbox and want to show your support for the ongoing development please consider making a donation to the project. Please also do join in the discussions over at our Forum. |
You can grab it from the official XBMC4XBox website linked below!

DICE posted an alert on its support forums for Battlefield 4 to warn players of ongoing connectivity issues across multiple platforms. This is the latest update in a string of problems the game has faced since its launch in late October, which has seen multiple patches go live in the past few weeks.
The game's support forums note that the developer is "continuing to monitor some intermittent connectivity issues affecting some players across various platforms." Though no other information is provided in the alert, DICE'sBattlefield 4issues tracker mentioned that it is investigating a bug that is "accounting for a large amount of crashes" on Xbox 360.
Among the other problems encountered by Battlefield players are reports that the game's China Rising DLC failed to carry over from PS3 to PS4, for players that made the switch to the next-gen system. As a result of its constant problems, multiple law firms have launched investigations into EA to determine whether the publisher intentionally mislead investors on the game's state leading up to its release.

The Chinese government has banned Battlefield 4 in the country following the release of the China Rising expansion, the Wall Street Journal reports. The game was banned over "national security" reasons.
EA declined to comment when contacted by the Wall Street Journal. We have also reached out to EA and will update this post accordingly.
The Battlefield 4 single-player campaign takes place during 2020, when a Chinese admiral initiates a plan to overthrow the government. The China Rising expansion features a variety of new maps, vehicles and an additional gametype, all set on the Chinese mainland.

A HUGE thanks to blargg for everything he did to help me with this.

Swizzy has posted a tutorial on how to dump Xbox One games using ImgBurn
Good news we have here. It seems that some clever user has managed to dump an Xbox One game and has written a tutorial about it.
According to Eurasia:
[QUOTE]
Swizzy has posted a tutorial over at logic-sunrise.com how to dump Xbox One games using ImgBurn. His first ISO, 'Forza Motorsport 5' (28GB), was dumped using a PIONEER BD-RW BDR-208D burner with original firmware 1.10 - ID61. Swizzy don't know if the security sector is included in the ISO dump or not [I'm guessing 'not'].

Call of Duty: Ghosts has issued a new update across all platforms. The update, which adds a new Heavy Duty game mode, is available right now on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC.
Heavy Duty is a new multiplayer playlist where each soldier spawns with additional health. On top of the new mode, this update adds additional weapon loadout options for Infected mode and your Squad will now earn extra squad points during their first five levels of progression.
This update also invalidates an invisibility exploit that was plaguing the Call of Duty: Ghosts online experience as well as instances where players could trigger unlimited perks when playing. There are also a multitude of platform-specific fixes addressed in this update, all of which you can read about in the full update notes over on the Call of Duty forums.

Halo: Spartan Assault is now available on Xbox One, just in time for the holidays. The top-down shooter is $14.99 and out one day earlier than it was expected to launch on the next-gen platform. The game is still coming to Xbox 360 in January after it already arrived on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices in July.
Developed by 343 Industries and Vanguard Games, Halo: Spartan Assault is set between the events of Halo 3 and those of Halo 4. In it, players take control of either Commander Sarah Palmer or Spartan Davis, completing more than 30 missions against Covenant forces. The game includes online cooperative multiplayer as well, though it will not be cross-compatible between Microsoft's two home consoles.

Drinkbox Studios is allegedly preparing a next-gen port of its latest,Guacamelee. This new version, which is said to be coming to Xbox One and PS4, will add new content and greater visual polish to the Lucha Libre-inspired 2D action-platformer.
The rumor comes via a piece that was published by IGN over this weekend but has since been pulled. In it, designer Chris McQuinn told IGN that the next-gen version of the game would include two additional worlds to explore, new enemy types, a "chicken-bomb ability" and updated visuals with better particle effects.
We contacted Drinkbox Studios and were told by McQuinn that the studio is "not ready to talk about any of our current projects but we'll be sure to reach out to you when we are." Guacamelee initially launched in April of this year, for both the PS Vita and PS3, and was later ported to the PC in August.
