Shoppers are currently paying through the nose to secure Xbox One and PS4 consoles on eBay.
PS4 consoles are typically attracting closing bids of £500 and above, while Xbox One is finishing a little higher at around the £530 mark. So Xbox One is generally selling for more than PS4, but the mark-up on Sony’s machine is higher considering its lower UK RRP.
On the higher end of the scale limited edition white Xbox Ones are attracting bids close to £700 and Buy It Now Xbox One bundles priced up to £900 have been successfully selling.
Excluding the one bizarrely priced PS4 that currently has a bid of £2,500, Sony’s machine had until recently been selling at prices of over £1,000, with some auctions closing at anything up to £700.
Sony told MCV yesterday that it hopes to get a “substantial” number of PS4 units into the UK soon. There’s been no update from Microsoft regarding stock, although both Xbox One and PS4 remain out of stock online at GAME, Amazon, ShopTo, Simply Games, Tesco and Asda.

Freestyle footballers, zombies, Romans and Plan B took Leicester Square by storm last month to usher in the Xbox One.
It was certainly a pretty spectacle, with a giant Xbox dome, fast cars and musicians doing their best to help passers-by, industry types and fans forget about the chilly November cold. And retailers got in on the act, too. Over 300 GAME stores opened at midnight, while Tesco was branded with the Xbox logo online and across over 100 of its biggest stores.
“It feels like a very big event,” says Phil Harrison, corporate VP at Microsoft, “And because this launch is in the era of social media, it feels massively amplified by that.”
But amidst the festivities, another games retailer announced it would be shutting its doors, and earlier in the month, controversial games analyst Michael Pachter predicted that Xbox One and PS4 would be the last of the consoles. On top of that, Ubisoft and EA have told MCV they think eight years was ‘a bit long’ to wait between Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
So now the glamour of launch night is over, what does the future of Microsoft’s console business hold? MCV caught up with Harrison ahead of the Leicester Square launch event to discuss just that.
It’s a night for celebration, yet it’s also a troubling time for retail with Blockbuster on the brink. Do you feel we need to do more to support our shops?
I think we do work very closely with retail and we work carefully with them and invest in promotions. We saw Tesco run TV ads for Xbox One, and this relationship is multiplied dozens around the country with different retail chains, indies and majors.
The situation is disappointing, but it reflects the changing make-up of retail in entertainment in the UK. I don’t think we are necessarily surprised by any of those changes.
"If you compare it from launch until now, 360
is a totally different machine. I think the
entertainment streaming revolution that
happened in the middle of this life cycle has
definitely extended its life." Phil Harrison, Xbox
A regular release of products helps. But after Xbox One and PS4 is on shelves, there’s a real lack of new games for the first few months. Why is that?
It’s not a deliberate thing. But not everyone who buys an Xbox One at launch will be playing it right away, some will be going under trees for December 25th and Titanfall at the beginning of March is not so far away. Plus we want our release schedule to have some breathing room in it.

It looks like an improvement. And as long as you aren’t actually using it, it is. The Xbox 360’s sprawling, multi-layered, ad-splattered interface, crammed as best as the engineers could manage into hardware that was never designed to support it, has been replaced by an elegant three-pane view. Home shows recent activity, Pins shows user-created shortcuts, Store holds everything you might want to buy.Advertising, though present, is less obtrusive. Three blocks on the main screen are apparently targeted based on user activity, and even if they aren’t then it’s hardly the obstruction that it used to be. Not having a social feed in the main interface, like PS4, is a missed opportunity, although to Microsoft’s credit it takes only a single button press to launch the quick-loading, Facebook-like activity feed. It’s when you try and do anything from here that problems arise.Mindful of its prior issues updating the functionality of Xbox 360, Microsoft has elected to make almost every system function an app. This might make more sense from a development point of view, enabling more rapid updates – and for Microsoft’s sake, let’s hope so – but Xbox One’s debut user experience is stuttering, clunky, and a serious challenge to Xbox Live’s long-held status as the premier console service. Bluntly, they take too long to load, don’t offer the functionality that Xbox Live was built on, and are, inexplicably, badly handled by the OS.The most perfect example of Microsoft ruining its prior work is Achievements, and the number of hoops you have to jump through to view them. Rather than the quick tap of yore, you have to spend several seconds holding the button down. This, incredibly, then reboots the Achievement app – even if it’s already running – in order to display some challenges, which you have to skip past to view an Achievement list built not around charmingly crafted icons but a slew of previously-released screenshots, which take several seconds to appear and then have to be selected to show what you did to unlock them.

New Windows update aims to strengthen ties between Microsoft's PC, Xbox and mobile operating systems
Microsoft is planning to bring its Windows, Phone and Xbox operating systems closer together, a new report has claimed.
The company has typically preferred to keep its Xbox OS totally separate from Windows for fears of its console being branded an “under the TV PC”.
But ZDNet has word of a new initiative called ‘Threshold’ that “will include updates to all three OS platforms that will advance them in a way to share even more common elements”.
News of Threshold supposedly emerged from “an internal email about plans for his unified operating-system engineering group” and refers to “the wave of operating systems across Windows-based phones, devices and gaming consoles”.
So what is it actually all about? Microsoft apparently wishes to “support the same core set of ‘high value activities’ across platforms” such as Office, documents and search.
This has lead some to speculate that the company’s Office suite could potentially make the move to Xbox One.

Switching on your next-gen console you might be surprised to notice it lacks some of the most-used features of its eight-year old predecessor. But that is the case with Xbox One, whose operating system trades many of the Xbox 360's system features for a leaner interface. But rather than moan about it - or, at least, as well as moaning about it - early adopters have begun compiling suggestions for Microsoft to implement. And the company has taken notice.XboxFeedback.com houses a list of issues and missed features which Reddit users have worked together to compile. It was even spotted by Microsoft mouthpiece Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, who commented to say that its suggestions had been passed on to the relevant people. [h=2]Top Xbox One feature requests[/h]- Xbox Guide functionality to return
- Friends as a tab on the home screen
- Notifications when friends come online, you receive a friend request
- Hard drive management screen
- USB support for storage/media
- View (and easily rate) recent players
- Smarter Kinect phrases ('Play Forza', with disambiguation for duplicates)
- Party chat to be simplified, on by default in parties
- Set game chat to TV, headset (or both)
- Controller battery indicator
- System-wide controller options (rumble off, layout save)
- Avatar store
- Voice messages
- Background music
- Custom backgrounds
- Ability to see Xbox One games/achievements on Xbox 360
The company has already stated that the Xbox One interface is just its first version and, like the Xbox 360, it will be refreshed throughout the console's lifespan. But the console's operating system seems aimed towards further homogenisation with Windows 8, and away from successful Xbox 360 features such as the Guide button. And this is where things run into problems.Rather than having the system's features laid out in the Guide's single, simple interface, core pieces are now spread across separate apps. You must now return to the Home screen to individually load these features (your Friends list, Achievements, system settings) or snap these features using Kinect voice commands (although this doesn't work with everything).Even within these apps, previously easy-to-reach features are now hard to find. Want to see which of your friends are online? You now need to load the Friends app, select "Friends" and click through to the system's confusing list of your acquaintances. Small green dots indicate who's actually online and who's not. This used to be on the Guide button, but was also part of the core desktop - accessible with a simple click of the right bumper. The Guide could also be used to view recent met players - a feature which has been removed entirely. It's a shame, as it makes Microsoft's much-lauded player ratings system pretty much impossible to use without it.Other missed features are even more inexplicable - there's no way to see your controller's battery life, there's no way to get notifications when a friend comes online, and you don't get a notification when other users add you as a friend.A number of applications seem unfinished or lacking functionality which would make far more useful. The Xbox One's Upload Studio is a great addition, but viewing other people's content feels oddly passive. The console has an activity feed but no way of commenting or "liking" content from friends. And while the option to export videos to SkyDrive is nice, PlayStation 4 lets you share content directly to social networks and take static screenshots.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 were reportedly the top selling consoles at Target and Walmart during Black Friday, accounting for 61 per cent of hardware sales between the two retailers.
The figure comes from an InfoScout report spotted byPolygon, which notes that hard sales figures weren't provided by the organization.
InfoScout points out Xbox's success was influenced by limited availability of PlayStation 4 stock, along with Walmart’s $99 Xbox 360 Black Friday deal.
The PS3 and PS4 ended up combining to make up 30 per cent of the console sales for the period, while the Wii U claimed just six per cent of the total (with the Wii also making up an additional percentage point).
The report included a chart for the top 20 software titles between the two chains as well:
- Call of Duty: Ghosts
- Disney infinity
- Skylanders: Swap Force
- Grand Theft Auto 5
- Madden NFL 25
- Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag
- Batman: Arkham Origins
- NBA 2K14
- Lego Marvel Super Heroes
- Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
- Call of Duty: Black Ops
- FIFA 14
- NCAA Football 14
- Super Mario 3D Land
- WWE 2K14
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- The Last of Us
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
- Killzone: Shadow Fall
- Batman: Arkham Origins

There are no surprises in the Xbox Cyber Monday sale, with today's deals lining up as announced last week. That said, there are at least a couple of offers worth highlighting, including one for the most appropriate game this Cyber Monday: Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon. The standalone follow-up to Far Cry 3 is at 75 percent off, meaning you can gorge on all its 80s cyber-cheddar for $3.74.
That's the standout deal to us, but the excellent Dark Souls at just $5 is not far off it. Other nods go to Red Dead Redemption, The Witcher 2, and L.A. Noire, each of those going for $7.49, and to co-op beat-em-up Battleblock Theater, which is down to $4.94.
For the full list of one-day-only cyber-discounts, head over to Xbox.com.

I think one of our dev team may have figured out how to successfully install a bigger HDD to an XBOX ONE. Tested with a 1TB so far and it seems to work well – although I haven't seen it myself yet. It's Thanksgiving night and i'm shit faced
This is not a 100% confirmation but it's looking good so far. Will post more info as I get it.
Great for the scene to have the very first XBONE "hack" though
UPDATE:
OK Confirmed
Full credits to Juvenal for this little beauty – you rock bro
As always no guarantees are given and use at your own risk !

Xbox One HDD Tools
What this does
Given any HDD over 500GB in size, you can format it for use with you Microsoft Xbox One console
How
Instructions
All of this must be done as root! I HIGHLY suggest you do this on a livecd or usb booted system if you don't 'know linux' and would rather not wipe the wrong hard drive.
- Connect your HDD and take note of what its called (ex: sda, sdb etc)
- Run the script with the device name as the first parameter
- It will bitch about missing partitions etc, but write a file with commands to create said missing partitions
- Run the created script
- Copy the correct files to the newly created partitions
- Unmount the newly created partitions
- Run the main script again
Putting it back together
When you put the new HDD in your console for the first time and boot up, the console will go the the green "Xbox One" screen, pause for a second or two, then shut down. Boot the console again. This time it should pause at the green screen for a while longer, then go to a black screen for even longer. It can take several minutes before anything happens after this, the xbox is automatically creating temporary files during this time. If you copied everything correctly, it WILL go to the dashboard eventually, just be patient!
What is linux?
Wait for a windows version
Required Files
These can be gotten off your original HDD easily
We are working on a Windows app – maybe integrating with our already established HDD Hacker Tool that was used for the 360 or just something standalone. Stay Tuned

The Xbox One arrives with a 500GB HDD built-in, and in contrast to the PlayStation 4's easily-accessed storage, it's not meant to be accessed or replaced by the user, ever. While we'll probably leave ours in place to keep from voiding the warranty or risk a ban from Xbox Live, a few folks have already cracked open the console to see what else will fit. iFixit noted during its teardown that there's an off-the-shelf 2.5-inch Samsung HDD inside connected via SATA II inside, and swapping that out isn't much of an issue. Brian Williams has already tried out the system with two alternate drives: a 500GB Samsung EVO SSD, and a Seagate 1TB hybrid SSHD. As you can see in his video (embedded after the break) boot time from off to the dashboard only improved slightly, with the SSD loading in 46.1 seconds compared to 50.5 stock. A test with Call of Duty: Ghosts revealed similar results, with the SSD loading up in 27 seconds and the hybrid drive close behind in 27.7, compared to 33.5 seconds stock. We'll need tests with more games to be sure, but so far it's not showing the improvements seen after swapping the PS4's hard drive out for speedier options. The folks at Tested report doing so improved level load times in Killzone: Shadow Fall from 60 seconds to 39 seconds.
So, if it's not a ton faster, why would you want to take the chance of prying Microsoft's box open? To get more space. Brian's drives were simply copies of the original transferred by Clonezilla, but an individual named Juvenal1 has already worked out how to get the system to actually recognize and make use of drives bigger than 500GB. By copying files from your original drive and using their Linux-compatible tool to repartition the new HDD, you can be up and running with more capacity after just a reboot or two. Of course, this carries significant risks and we don't recommend it for most, as Microsoft's Albert Penello has alreadyrevealed support for external drives is coming in a future update, along with the ability to do crazy things like see how much storage you actually have left. Still, if you just need to live on the edge (or store every game released so far and record hours of clean Upload Studio clips) the instructions can be found here.

As most everyone knows the Xbox One came out last week and if you were one of the lucky few to get one you might have noticed the headset is quite uncomfortable and covers only one ear. [octanechicken] has a possible adapter solution that lets you plug-in an older more comfortable chat headset like a Turtle Beach. It is being reported as a functional hack by others in the comments; however it may still be questionable. We say questionable because the first release of this Instructable clearly had a flaw in the wiring, but updated text seems to have fixed that problem. Using a female 2.5 mm stereo inline jack [octanechicken] was able to get the Xbox One headset controller to work with older Xbox 360 chat headsets having a male 2.5 mm plug.
The photos on the instructable are still incorrect so following the text instructions one simply unsolders the wires from within the ear piece and then solders the white wire to the tip connector, blue wire to the middle ring connector and the bare wire to the rear sleeve connector of the female 2.5 mm stereo inline jack. Remember to leave the black wire disconnected and covered with a bit of tape. If you cut the wires instead of unsoldering them, remember to scrape any varnish off before soldering. But what about that black wire?

Microsoft has dismissed complaints that eight years was too long between Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
Ubisoft and EA have told MCV this year that they felt the console cycle had lasted too long and said they would rather a five to six year gap moving forward.
But Xbox VP Phil Harrison told MCV that if they had released Xbox One three years ago, it would not be as powerful as it is today.
“Eight years is actually the right time,” he said?in an new interview on page 16.
“Xbox 360 continues to grow, over 80m units and counting. And the underlying silicon chip design innovations that allow Xbox One to be what it is, didn’t reach the performance level and price point that we needed until right now. So if we had come out three years ago with a new console, it would not be to the same degree of performance or price that we have now.
“And Xbox 360 had seven years of growth which I think is a record for a console.”

Ubisoft has a huge portfolio of games for Sony and Microsoft’s new machines, including a number of major new IPs.
MCV speaks to UK boss Rob Cooper on the publisher’s sky high expectations for the next-generation.
Ubisoft is supporting PS4 and Xbox One with some big new IPs. What are you expectations for the new consoles?
Both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are set to reinvigorate the market. They’ll attract current gamers, bring back lapsed gamers, and appeal to new audiences. Microsoft and Sony have both confirmed high pre-orders. Past market trends and our own internal estimates indicate that within 18 to 24 months the install base of next- gen consoles could double that of the previous generation over a comparable period.
Was the decision to delay Watch Dogs a difficult one to make?
It was a tough decision but the right one. The team has been working so hard to create a truly outstanding video game. The extra time is enabling the team to fulfill their vision and ambition.
The reaction to the Watch Dogs delay from the media was of huge disappointment. What do you think this says to Ubisoft’s role over the next-generation?
I disagree – yes, there was some disappointment, but the overwhelming majority understood the decision because it is in the best interest of the game. This game is a benchmark for next-gen: we won’t compromise on quality, and we want to exceed the expectations of people who are going to play the game. And I think that is what “players see as Ubisoft’s role in this new generation: consistently delivering the highest quality, most innovative games. With titles like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Just Dance 2014, The Crew, and Tom Clancy’s The Division coming, you can see why that’s the expectation.
Is it a problem that there isn’t much new IP at the launch of these platforms?
This year we’ll be going through a period of transition.
At least 30 new IPs have already been announced for next-gen – which will continue to attract new gamers and keep console owners happy. Ubisoft has a reputation for bringing innovative IPs to the market and we will continue to do so throughout the next-gen lifecycle. We know that consumers want new experiences.
You have three big new brands in The Division, Watch Dogs and The Crew. How much investment is Ubisoft placing in new IP, and why take the risk?
Current consoles have been around for eight years. The capacities of those machines has been more or less tapped and that’s why franchises like Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed have become the go-to purchases.
History shows that with new consoles, players are looking to try something new. It’s the right time to bring new IP like Watch Dogs and The Division to the market, since they have a better chance of becoming one of those go-to brands for the new generation. We are one of only two or three companies that have enough talented people on board to create these new blockbuster IPs and still keep our established franchises fresh.
Was the current lifecycle too long?
It has been a long one and there have been many advances in the industry and new gamers that have joined the market over the past eight years. The next-gen has the opportunity to take all of these factors and reinvigorate the market. We’re hoping that because of the long wait there will be pent up demand that leads to a faster transition to next-gen consoles.
How do you expect the way we sell games to change over next- gen? Will the role of retail diminish?
The market is evolving in terms of how games are delivered to players. Digital purchases and downloads will continue to grow and make up a larger part of overall industry sales. Customers will still go into stores, seeking advice and offers. Remember a high proportion of our consumers don’t use debit/credit cards. Retail is still a relevant channel.
