Titanfall developer Respawn has confirmed the existence of a pre-launch test - although you probably won't be taking part in it."As some of you are asking, we are doing a limited technical test," the developer wrote onTwitter. "It is NOT a beta, and we don't have any beta news at this time."If you received an e-mail invite from EA and followed the instructions, you have a chance to be a part of the tech trial. If you did not get an e-mail you will not be selected for the tech trial."All emails have now been sent out, Respawn added. Only a small amount of people have been selected, and those who have won't be able to talk about or capture gameplay from the game.Standby for Titanfall.
ORIGINAL STORY: It appears there will be some kind of pre-release test for upcoming Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC multiplayer shooter Titanfall.NeoGAF users were sent emails from EA suggesting they register their interest for a test on the Titanfall website. At first there was concern the emails represented a scam, but the current thinking is it's legitimate.After logging in with your Origin account details, you get the following message:"FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS: Your application to participate is complete. If you are selected to take part in our upcoming test, you will receive an email in the coming days with a unique code and instructions on how to download and access the game on Xbox One. Thank you!"Titanfall developer Respawn and publisher EA are yet to announce a test of any kind. When asked about this latest development on Twitter the official Titanfall account replied: "We have not announced any official beta information."

Action puzzler Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is next up in the Games with Gold program, and Xbox Live Gold members can download it for free on their 360s right now.
Raid the Joystiq tombs and you'll see we gave LCatGoL (catchy) four and a half stars. In the words of one Mr. Ludwig Kietzmann, "Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light introduces an unexplored social element into a franchise that I've come to adore for its sense of isolation and discovery. A second player, acting as Aztec guardian Totec, necessarily disrupts that atmosphere, but also facilitates unplanned moments of creativity."
Developer Crystal Dynamics is hard at work on a new Tomb Raider to follow on from last year's reboot, and a follow-up to Guardian of Light isn't in the works (as far as we know!). That said, the Californian studio made sure it never said never...

Electronic Arts is now sending out alpha trial invitations for the Xbox One version of Respawn Entertainment's upcoming mech-combat FPS Titanfall. Competitive console shooter resource Beyond Entertainment reports thatBattlefield 4 players who are registered with EA's Origin service are being randomly selected for the alpha.
EA's invitation encourages players to "take part in an exclusive trial for an upcoming title on Microsoft's Xbox One." The e-mail then leads Origin members to submit an alpha application here, warning that "availability to this trial is extremely limited."
Speaking to Joystiq, an alpha participant notes that players do not receive immediate access to the Titanfall test version upon registering with EA. Instead, accepted players are told to wait for further details after filling out a brief application.

Announcing that it has completed today's scheduled maintenance, Rockstarrevealed that it is removing counterfeit in-game currency distributed withinGrand Theft Auto Online over the last several weeks. The studio is now taking corrective measures to punish players who actively engaged in cheating and other balance-breaking exploits.
Rockstar assures that players who did not actively exploit the game's progression system will not be targeted during its search for cheaters. Counterfeit GTA$ received from others will be removed from player accounts, and all previously purchased items will remain available for use. Players who purposefully cheated the system, however, are subject to punitive actions ranging from assignment to cheater-specific player pools to full bans fromGrand Theft Auto Online.

Diablo 3 may yet roll onto Xbox One, if listings spotted at two major retailers are anything to go by. Best Buy Canada (via IGN), and UK outlet Argos listed it for Microsoft's console in the last 24 hours, and while Blizzard isn't confirming the port, it isn't denying it either.
"One of our goals is to bring Diablo 3 to as many players as possible," reads a Blizzard statement given to Eurogamer, "but we don't have any other platform announcements to share at this time."
That sounds a bit like what Blizzard said when it unveiled the Xbox 360 version to go alongside the PS3 one. Perhaps we'll see the same deal with the upcoming PS4 version, which is due for release some time this year.
Altogether more confirmed is the March 25 release date for Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls - that's for PC and Mac, although Blizzard has confirmed the expansion for PS4 as well.

DICE began rolling out an update for Battlefield 4 on Xbox One today. The update offers similar changes to the game seen in the patches issued to thePC, PS3 and PS4 versions earlier this week, such as the damage dealt by the stealth jet cannons.
Of the issues addressed in today's update, DICE fixed a map and minimap flickering problem players encountered during the Rogue Transmission and Operation Locker stages. Additionally, the patch "reduced the risk of single player campaign save file becoming corrupt," according to the full update notes, which can be found after the break.

Microsoft has confirmed it does not plan to make a Halo movie.The company issued a statement to Eurogamer after recent reports suggested Alien director Ridley Scott had signed up to produce a feature-length digital Halo movie."The Halo franchise encompasses many elements, including games, action figures, novels and more," a Microsoft spokesperson told Eurogamer."As always, we have many projects in the works that offer us the opportunity to bring in new audiences to the franchise, as we did in the past with Halo Legends and Halo: Forward Unto Dawn."We plan to continue telling the Halo story through innovative channels, but there are no plans for a Halo motion picture at this time."The latest Halo movie rumour was sparked by tweets by Production Weekly. Perhaps it was talking about the confirmed Halo TV series, which Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg is working on alongside Microsoft and Halo developer 343 Industries.Halo has had an on again off again relationship with the movie world. Hollywood scribe (and occasional Ninja Theory collaborator) Alex Garland wrote the first script, which was pitched to studios by couriers dressed as Master Chief. Halo IP owner Microsoft supposedly asked for unreasonable terms from Hollywood before 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios partnered to produce the film and Garland's script was reworked.District 9 director Neill Blomkamp signed on to direct with Peter Jackson, of The Lord of the Rings fame, producing, but the project collapsed in late 2007 and the film rights returned to Microsoft. Blomkamp went on to make sci-fi movie District 9 instead.Blomkamp's still up for making a Halo movie, incidentally.Halo for Xbox One is expected later this year.

A new update for GTA Online, version 1.09, has eradicated a number of cash and player progression glitches, on top of strengthening overall anti-cheat measures in the online multiplayer side of GTA 5.
Rockstar hasn't said which exact exploits have been taken care of in the patch notes, nor has the studio offered any context. We've followed up with Rockstar for more information and will update this post accordingly.
Rockstar issued three updates to GTA Online throughout December. The first unlocked creation tools for deathmatch and race variants back on December 11. A week later, Rockstar added capture the flag and then, shortly after Christmas, Verified Jobs – special curated online match variants chosen by Rockstar itself. Co-op heists are due sometime later this year.

The Xbox 360 was the UK's best-selling home console in 2013, figures shown to Eurogamer reveal.
The data from UK numbers company Chart-Track indicates that Xbox 360 beat both next-gen consoles, but that 3DS - when you lump together all models in its hardware family - was top.
[h=2]2013 UK hardware chart[/h]- 3DS (including 2DS, XL) - up 4 per cent
- Xbox 360 - down 30.7 per cent
- PS4
- PS3 - down 31 per cent
- Xbox One
- Vita - down 41 per cent
- Wii U - up 41.5 per cent
- Wii - down 72 per cent
PlayStation 4 came third in 2013's console race, despite being released for the least amount of time.
Xbox One could only manage fifth place, behind PlayStation 3.
Individually, sales of the original 3DS plummeted 69.9 per cent, but this was counteracted by sales of the 3DS XL model (up 51 per cent) and the launch of 2DS.
Counting all 3DS incarnations altogether, Nintendo's handheld was one of only two existing systems to show positive growth (combined sales were up four per cent on 2012's totals).
The other console to show positive gains was Wii U - although this is more due to it only launching right at the end of 2012.
Looking just at last year's figures, Wii U was out-performed even by PlayStation Vita, despite Sony's struggling handheld itself falling 41.5 per cent in sales compared to 2012.
In total, 2013 hardware sales were up 5 per cent on 2012 (although 38 per cent in revenue) thanks to the launch of PS4 and Xbox One.
The two next-gen consoles accounted for around a third of all hardware bought last year - even though they only launched in November.

Activision has confirmed that Onslaught's 28th January release is exclusive to Xbox Live, of course.Furthermore, it's detailed exactly what the add-on entails. Onslaught will include four new multiplayer maps, the all-new Maverick dual-purpose Assault Rifle/Sniper Rifle, and the first episode in the four-part alien-based Extinction story arc, Nightfall.Featuring two new characters and a couple of new species of alien, Nightfall is set in the Alaskan wilderness where soldiers are tasked with eliminating an extra-terrestrial menace. It's said to contain a three-story tall monster, so look out for that.The new maps include: Fog, a slightly smallish stage set in a misty mire; BayView, a smaller battlefield comprised of a California boardwalk; Containment, another smaller map set along a South American dry river bed; and Ignition, a stage set around a Florida space facility where players can trigger rocket launches on their enemies.Each of Call of Duty: Ghosts' DLC packs will be priced at $14.99 (about £9), or can be purchased at a reduced price by buying the season pass for $49.99 (about £30).

via http://www.aep-emu.de/
A new version of the multi-system emulators RetroArch (formerly known as SSNES) is released for Windows, XBOX, WII, PS3 and XBOX360.
SSNES is called RetroArch from now on, and ´libsnes´ is called ´libretro´ from now on.
What is RetroArch?
RetroArch is a modular multi-system emulator system that is designed to be fast, lightweight, and portable. It has features few other emulators frontends have, such as real-time rewinding and game-aware shading.
What platforms does it support?
RetroArch sets the standard on cross-platform portability right now.
Linux (x86 and x86_64)
Windows (32bit/64bit)
Mac OSX (PPC/Intel)
Playstation 3 (PS3 SDK/PSL1GHT (WIP))
Xbox 1 (XDK)
Xbox 360 (XeXDK/Libxenon)
Wii
Raspberry Pi
OpenPandora
Why is it special?
Right now RetroArch is unique in that it runs the same emulator cores on multiple systems (such as Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC, etc).
For each emulator ´core´, RetroArch makes use of a library API that we like to call ´libretro´.
Think of libretro as an interface for emulator and game ports. You can make a libretro port once and expect the same code to run on all the platforms that RetroArch supports. It´s designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind so that the porter can worry about the port at hand instead of having to wrestle with an obfuscatory API.
The purpose of the project is to help ease the work of the emulator/game porter by giving him an API that allows him to target multiple platforms at once without having to redo any code. He doesn´t have to worry about writing input/video/audio drivers - all of that is supplied to him by RetroArch. All he has to do is to have the emulator port hook into the libretro API and that´s it - we take care of the rest.

RetroArch Windows megapack 20140103
===================================
===========
Changelog
===========
20140103:
- ...
20131013:
- RGUI has gotten a face lift in user friendliness.
* On first startup, a start screen is shown with the basic hotkeys for RGUI.
This should help new users use RGUI.
* Gamepad configuration can now be done from within RGUI. Not all hotkeys are exposed, but the most important ones are.
* The .info-file concept from OSX/iOS ports of RetroArch have been made mainline.
These files contain basic metadata which helps RGUI be more user friendly.
- When choosing libretro cores, more friendly names are shown instead of the raw dll paths.
- Load Game (Detect Core) is added to the menu.
This allows you do choose a ROM directly without having to switch the libretro core first.
If multiple cores can match to the extension, a list will be presented with relevant cores.
Even .zip files are supported in this way, as it will try to match against files within the zip.
====================================
General notes about the megapack (if you´ve used RetrArch before)
====================================
*Seriously* avoid these things:
- bSNES CPU filters (cannot be set from RGUI).
- XML shaders (cannot be set from RGUI).
- Phoenix GUI (deprecated, it should die).
If you absolutely *must* use these, you can set CPU filters and XML shaders in config.
They are very troublesome and ugly features.
They will not be supported in RGUI.
Phoenix GUI is not included. It is deprecated, breaks with xinput and should in general be avoided.
All config options are still available obviously. See retroarch.cfg.
If retroarch.cfg gets overwritten, see retroarch.cfg.clean for the default skeleton config. All relevant config options are explained.
All Phoenix features have their equivalent in either command line or config. It´s just a launcher, it doesn´t to anything magical.
See retroarch.exe --help.
Some RetroArch features like special ROM loading, netplay and ffmpeg recording are all accessible from CLI.
These features will probably eventually be added to RGUI, but it´s not top priority.
===============
libretro cores
===============
I´ve included all cores which built from libretro-super as of 20131013 with MinGW-w64 4.8.1 POSIX thread.
They´re placed in libretro/ directory.
Note that many of these cores are WIP-quality, and some are outright broken.
=========
Shaders
=========
I´ve bundled all shaders from common-shaders/ repo.
=====================
Input configuration
=====================
If you have an xinput-supported gamepad, you should not need to configure input at all. It should work as expected.
-----
RGUI
-----
You can do basic gamepad configuration within RGUI. Use Configure All to configure everything in one go. You can also bind the RGUI menu toggle.
Keyboard configuration inside RGUI is not supported yet.
----
CLI
----
If you want to configure input for obscure systems which don´t map well to the RetroPad,
it is recommended you create an autoconfig for your device.
retroarch-joyconfig.exe -a autoconfig/yourpad.cfg
Follow the instructions on-screen.
You can also configure input directly and update retroarch.cfg, but this is not recommended.
The reasoning is that you have to create configs per player if you have two or more of the same pad.
You also have to duplicate input configs if you have multiple configs which use the same config.
Autoconfigs can help avoid duplication in these cases.
retroarch-joyconfig.exe -i retroarch.cfg -o retroarch.cfg
To configure some of the most relevant hotkeys (save state/load state/RGUI menu toggle), add --misc.
If you don´t want to configure certain binds, there is no way to "skip" a config. A workaround for this is to use the --timeout option.
See retroarch-joyconfig.exe --help for more information.
=========
Logging
=========
To get logging in terminal:
retroarch.exe -v --menu
Dump log to a file:
retroarch.exe -v --menu 2>log.txt
================
Custom configs
================
Recently, support for changing config within RGUI was added.
You can also create new configs for complete flexibility.
If you want to go completely nuts with custom input autoconfig dirs, history lists, etc per config, you´ll have to hack in the config. As always, see retroarch.cfg.clean for reference.
=================
Notes on config
=================
I´ve set libretro config, system directory, shader directory, screenshot directory and config directory.
Note that I´ve used ":/libretro/". The : prefix is a special prefix which means relative to the retroarch.exe.
Relative paths would normally work fine, but in case the working dir is ever changed, it would break this.
When the config is saved back, it´ll probably have the actual full path, so beware of that.
config_save_on_exit = true
is also set, so the config will automatically be saved on exit by default.
==========================
System directory / BIOS
==========================
System directory is ./system/. I´ve put bSNES stuff in there as well as mupen64 .ini files.
Provide your own BIOSes as needed.

After losing her leg in a hit-and-run incident, Insomniac Games intern Ana Kessel faces mounting medical bills related to her treatment. In an effort to help Kessel, Insomniac has covered a new, Microsoft-donated Xbox One in signatures and put the console up for auction on eBay. The Xbox One is available for shipment worldwide and also comes with sealed, Day One Edition copies of Forza Motorsport 5 and Ryse: Son of Rome.
If you're already set for the new console generation, you can still help bydonating to Kessel's GoFundMe page. At the time of this writing, $58,196 has been collected out of a requested $150,000.
Epic Games also held auctions to benefit Kessel in November, offering up original, retro and gold-colored models of the Gears of War series' Lancer. The auctions resulted in a total of $3,000 going toward Kessel's medical bills. Here's to hoping Kessel quickly collects the remaining amount for her medical expenses and returns to work in the industry as a graphics artist.

GoPro is about to unleash its unique brand of action sport videos on Xbox Live for both the Xbox One and 360. We asked GoPro if it had further details on when the channels would be available, but apparently that date hasn't been confirmed yet. All we do know is that the channel will come to 360 first, before making the hop over to its younger brother. If you fly Virgin America, you can actually get the channel right now, but that's perhaps a little less convenient than shouting "Xbox on" when you need an instant adrenaline fix.
Missed our CES stage interview with GoPro creative director Brad Schmidt? You can catch it in full here.

Xbox Chief Product Officer Marc Whitten isn't worried about Steam Machinestaking up precious Xbox real estate in the living room. During an interview withEngadget at CES, Whitten said he's "not sweating" Valve's new initiative. He thinks "there's space for both."
Whitten admitted, "I personally don't know how to think about Steam Machines yet," which is becoming an increasingly more popular sentiment. "I'm not knocking it or whatever. I continue to think that PC gaming – the sort of uber configuration and I can change everything and I can mod – that's an important thing and there's a lot of people that wanna do that."
Whitten elaborated when a product is in the living room, however, players want to be instantly entertained – they don't want to spend time doing anything else. "When you get into that living room environment, you don't want to spend any of your brain cells doing anything but being entertained. I don't want to work on it; I don't want to feel like I have to know how it works. I would like to be blowing things up now, or watching a thing now. That's the fundamental thing that you want to do."
A total of 13 Steam Machines, from various manufacturers, have been revealed so far. The cheapest machines come in at $500, while the more expensive configurations can top out at $6,000. Each Steam Machine ships with SteamOSand Valve's new Steam Controller.

Call of Duty: Ghosts first dose of DLC, Onslaught, will be available to Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners on January 28, according to a photo Twitter user SeriousSix2010 claims to have taken at their local GameStop. The display notes that Onslaught will reach Xbox users first, which would align with Activision's E3 announcement regarding timed-exclusive DLC for the platforms.
The poster suggests that Onslaught will consist of new maps known as "Fog," "Bayview," "Containment" and "Ignition," as well as a "Maverick AR & Sniper Rifle" and the first episode of a four-part, episodic offering in the game's Extinciton mode. The poster does not display a price, but considering Ghosts' season pass is $49.99 and the prices of packs for recent Call of Duty games, $15 wouldn't be surprising.
We reached out to local GameStops and were told there is currently nothing in the system concerning Onslaught's release date.

Ubisoft has brought forward the Xbox One and PS4 Rayman Legends release date by one week to February 21 in the UK.
The next-gen versions of the game will feature enhanced graphics and reduced loading times, according to the publisher.
The Xbox One version of the title will boast ten exclusive challenges to unlock new time-limited Achievements, while PS4 players will be able to make use of the console's touchpad for select actions. The game will also support Remote Play on Vita.
Rayman Legends started out as a Wii U exclusive due for release in February 2013, but its launch was delayed to last August in order to allow for a simultaneous release on Xbox 360 and PS3.
The title also made its way to Vita, PC and Mac last year. Next-gen versions were announced in November.
In CVG's Rayman Legends review, we said the game is an absolute joy to play, offering "essential platforming shenanigans" that are "best experienced on Wii U".

Lionhead has announced multiple retailer specific Fable Anniversary pre-order bonuses.
The pre-order incentives listed below were revealed with the news that the game has gone gold, meaning physical copies are now being created in preparation for the Fable Anniversary release date of February 4, 2014 in the US, February 6 in Asia, and February 7 in Europe.
[h=3]Peiratēs Pre Order Pack[/h] - Peiratēs Outfit: Peiratēs was a famous plunderer, known for travelling uncharted waters to take entire cargo ships hostage for their most expensive items. He was also known by the name "Pete" in less formal circles.
- Peiratēs Cutlass: A weapon used at sea needs to be both practical and effective. Peiratēs spent years refining this weapon so that the hook could be used to catch fish, the tip could be used to eat fish, and the blade could be used to slit a man's throat.
[h=3]Snowspire Pre Order Pack[/h] - Snowspire Guard Outfit: Made from genuine horse hair, this outfit is said to calm even the most vocal of criminals.
- The Jackarse: An age-old popular pasttime was run by a chap named Jack, who used to slap people around the face with a dead fish until they fell onto their arse. The rest, as they say, is history...
[h=3]Apollo's Pre Order Pack[/h] - Apollo's Outfit: Apollo is the pseudonym for the leader of The Grey Company, the man responsible for monitoring Lady Grey's financial investments. As fearsome as that may sound, he had a reputation for being incredibly nice, often using his own money to bail out any villager that couldn't afford that months rent.
- Apollo's Crossbow: Based on a centuries old concept, Apollo wanted to create a modern crossbow with the feel of a relic from the past - and thus this crossbow was born. Dependable in combat, but also pretty tasty to look at.
Originally scheduled for release in 2013, Fable Anniversary is a remastered edition of 2005's Fable: The Lost Chapters, itself an expanded version of the first game in the series, which launched on Xbox a year earlier.
The high definition Xbox 360 update features new Achievements, leaderboards, an updated save system, and 1080p visuals with lighting and animation powered by Unreal Engine 3. Beyond cosmetic improvements, Lionhead is also planning to add content to Fable Anniversary, starting with SmartGlass functionality.
