While Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas, Vice City and the original Liberty City were decent approximations of iconic American cities, the debut GTA IV video hints at an incredible level of realism for the PS3 and Xbox 360 iteration - not just in terms of the buildings but also their geographical positioning and sense of scale.
New York will still be referred to as fictional Liberty City but it seems feasible from close examination of the trailer that an aerial view of the environs will match the authentic Google Maps version far closer than the one seen in GTA 3. In many ways it's approaching the whole city thing in the same manner as The Getaway did for London.
What does this mean for the gameplay? Everything points to a less cartoonified visual style and a more mature subject matter with the Eastern European character mentioning people smuggling as one of his past crimes. Then there's the austere orchestral music, a far cry from the funk and hip hop of San Andreas and the 80s ballads of Vice City. Could this be suggestive of a major change? To look at it another way: are we looking at the first 'serious' GTA?

Rockstar's lips were tightly sealed this morning, following last night's debut trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV.
When we asked it about rumours that the PS3 version would contain more content than its Xbox 360 counterpart, the publisher informed us it couldn't say anything at all about the title, declining to reveal any further information than was presented in last night's footage.
Grand Theft Auto IV will be set in New York, and looks to follow an eastern European man, possibly Russian.
"Life is complicated," he says in the trailer, walking over the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan. "Perhaps here things will be different."

Microsoft's release of the Xbox 360 Elite is unlikely to improve the company's market share in 2007, according to IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon.
Although the company is aggressively challenging rivals Sony and Nintendo in the gaming market, Pidgeon sees software, not hardware, as the key driver for new consumers.
"The Xbox 360 Elite may sway some gamers waiting to decide on a new system, but I don't expect the Elite to have much an effect on the 360's market share this year," said Pidgeon, speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz.
"The higher price and the 120GB hard-drive upgrade should increase revenue for Microsoft and for retailers, but system-selling games such as Halo 3 will increase the 360's position more significantly."
Although Nintendo and Sony insist their consoles are a different offering and therefore in different markets, Microsoft is not afraid of acknowledging and tackling the console competition.
"Microsoft is very aggressive in seeking market share. The 360 is in more direct competition with the PS3, but Microsoft is going after first place and sees Nintendo as a competitor as well," commented Pidgeon.
The online space for home consoles has always been a focus for Microsoft's Xbox brand, and the release of the 360 Elite further confirms the company has its sights set on dominating the area.
"With the 360, Microsoft is extending the online capabilities of Xbox Live including downloads of long form video as well as games and game add-ons, and the point of increasing the hard-drive to 120GB is to enable 360 Xbox Live gamers to download more items more often," offered the analyst.
"Extending Live to Vista systems will also increase Microsoft's online audience, which is an important metric now and going forward," he added.
Pidgeon estimates that Microsoft may soon lower the Premium Xbox 360 console to the same price as the Core model, and he also questioned the USD 179 price of the new hard-drive, to be released at the same time as the Xbox 360 Elite.
"It'd be better for Microsoft to sell through existing Core systems before lowering the Premium SKU to the Core price, which would achieve both a price cut and a value add," said Pidgeon.
"It will be interesting to see how the 120GB hard-drive will do as an upgrade options for current Xbox 360 owners. Uptake on the larger hard drive will increase the potential for Xbox Live downloads, but the price is a bit steep."

There's been a bit of hustle and bustle surrounding the release of BioWare's Mass Effect this afternoon, as several European websites report a June 22 exit for the RPG stunner - though Microsoft is keeping quiet.
Italian site Spazio Games (we can't read it without giggling either) first reported the date, penning the European release alongside a US exit on June 5.
Other European news ops have since claimed the dates as real, though Microsoft expectedly refused to comment when contacted this afternoon.
Whether they turn out to be right or wrong, the sci-fi effort has long been expected sooner rather than later - especially seeming as the official website has gone into media overdrive.
Fuel was added to the fire when BioWare co-boss Ray Muzyka told IGN that Mass Effect would be absent from this year's scaled-down E3 in July - blatantly because it'll already be out by then.
We recently had the pleasure to sit down and watch the entire first hour of Mass Effect in action and couldn't be more excited. Look for our full write-up on that soon.
We will of course be the first to shout from the rooftops when Microsoft starts jotting on the Xbox 360 release calendar.

Last month Ubisoft announced that Player's Pack Red Edition, new download content for Rainbow Six: Vegas on Xbox 360, would be released at the end of March and we're now here - so where is it?
Still in the development bowels of publisher headquarters, that's where, Ubisoft confirming that it's been delayed. A little late on the announcement there, but it's promised that it'll "communicate on its new release date as soon as we can".
Content featuring in the download hasn't changed since its announcement, the company added.
Player's Pack Red Edition includes three brand new multiplayer maps, two 'relit' multiplayer maps and two new multiplayer game modes.

Next time your pop your Crackdown disc in (and you are connected to Xbox Live) you’ll get prompted for a title update. According to what I am told, The update ‘addresses several minor technical issues to ensure a smoother online gameplay experience’ and ‘increases the number of ambient gang vehicles that populate Pacific City.’ That last one should held with the ‘Repo Man’ achievement.

From the read me
gentoo-xenon-minimal-2006.1
***************************
This is a liveCD for Linux on the Xbox 360. It is based on the official gentoo
minimal installer named install-ppc64-minimal-2006.1.iso with a few changes to
boot on the Xbox 360 (codename xenon).
Currently, Samsung drives aren't supported, but it will work if you can load the
enable0800 ISO just before loading the cdreader binary via serial.
How does it work ?
==================
Burn gentoo-xenon-minimal-2006.1.iso.
Upload the cdreader binary via serial, this will open the xbox dvd drive.
Put the gentoo-xenon-minimal-2006.1 CD in the drive.
cdreader will automatically start the xell bootloader located at lba 0x20 on
this cd and boot the Linux Kernel.
Where to find more info on Linux for Xbox 360 :

nothing would be possible.

Bit more details about what you'll need. As this uses the Hypervisor Vulnerability You'll need Xbox360 kernel 4532 or 4548 (downgrade is not possible atm as Microsoft blew-up an eFuse in CPU to prevent kernel downgrades, if you got a lower kernel version you'll need to find the CD/DVD burnable HD-DVD addon software update called HD_DVD_10-2006.zip (md5 cd4db8e2c94266ab73513c361dd5b8f6) that will upgrade your console to 4532).
You will also need the King Kong Xbox360 game, make an iso of it, apply the above new shader hack that include cdreader and burn it ... and to run this modified gamedisc on your 360 will will need to flash your Xbox360 DVD-ROM drive with a modified firmware of course. And you'll also need to burn the 'xenon modified' gentoo minimal 2006.1 LiveCD that includes the XeLL Loader. Then just boot your modified King Kong, press start on the main menu and when the drive opens, insert the gentoo xenon LiveCD.
Download new LiveCD
Download new shader

Lee Schuneman, head of production at Rare, had some time to sit down with GamesIndustry.biz and talk about the upcoming Banjo-Kazooie game for Xbox 360. The first thing he does is assure us that the game is in good hands, stating that the team working on the title is very passionate about it, like Gregg Mayles, the Creative Director, who had the same position for both the original Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. That being said, Banjo's latest outing will bring new elements to the table, and are noted to be unexpected by fans of the series.

Friendly tipster Evan M wasn't too stoked to see an Xbox 360 Elite headed for store shelves after he'd just purchased a Premium 360, especially considering the fact that his TV has a whole HDMI port twiddling its thumbs, just waiting to get its game on. After informing Microsoft of his displeasure through what we're sure was a politely worded email, Evan claims to have received a slightly encouraging response from a Microsoft support person, promising an upcoming HDMI to component adapter for the 'box to make his situation perhaps a bit more bearable. Unfortunately, the support person also mentioned that "we do not have information as of the moment if the cable will be sold separately," which might mean such an adapter is only destined for sales with some sort of updated Premium SKU, at least for the immediate future. We'll keep our eyes peeled.

Eidos is viewing the success of its naval combat game Battlestations: Midway as reason to warrant a sequel, it's emerged.
In a recent financial report, the company has stated, "After the period end, in February 2007, we released Battlestations Midway on PC and Xbox 360. This product immediately entered the UK charts at No1 in both the Xbox 360 and All Formats charts. We are continuing to build this franchise and have a sequel in development".
It was also reaffirmed in the report that a Just Cause sequel is in development.
Eidos was unavailable for comment on either sequel at the time of writing, however the producer on Battlestations: Midway, Klaude Thomas, did hint and potential content for a follow-up when we interviewed him at the end of last year.
It's likely that the sequel will be returning us to WWII, Thomas explaining at the time that the Battlestations development team "has a lot of ideas about what they'd like to see in the future and there's a lot of great history we could go into".
He said that one thing that "would be really cool" for future games in the series are "full-scale landing invasions" - like D-Day - and when questioned about co-op in the single-player campaign in Midway replied, "You know, that would have been a great feature, and for the future perhaps".
So, that's Battlestations: D-Day with full-scale landing invasions and co-op play in the single-player campaign then. Maybe.

Canada's little brother to Best Buy, Future Shop has a release date listed for Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. Apparently the game will release on May 8th, 2007, but you can never tell with site just trying to nab pre-orders. In any case, it looks like Command and Conquer 3 will be joining the ranks of the other major titles coming at the cusp of summer. Will you be looking to get your Real Time Strategizing on in a couple scant months?

According to Evil Avatar, GameStop and EB Games will not be taking pre-orders for the upcoming Xbox 360 Elite. The decision not to take pre-orders apparently stems from an uncertain number of consoles being allocated to each store. EvAv notes that there is no confirmation about whether or not customers will be able to pre-order the fabulously expensive 120GB hard drive.
So, if you want to snag an Xbox 360 Elite, you'd best be prepared to wait in line for one. Well, that or you could pre-order it somewhere else. Has anyone out there pre-ordered an Elite?

In just under 7 hours, the Grand Theft Auto IV Trailer should be hitting the series of tubes. Hopefully you've properly prepared yourself for this. We're interested to see what kind of hype this will generate, with the logo having been showcased on FX for a half hour accompanied by the ticking count down. Also interesting to note is that the xbox.com Game Detail page showcases box art which could be placeholder, as it's just the "IV" logo slapped on the template for 360 Titles. That's not to say that it couldn't be official, but it greatly differs from all the box art since GTA III, which may actually be the point. In any case, we'll be closely watching Rockstar's game page this afternoon, will you?
The trailer will become available to view at 23:00 GMT here. Leave feedback via comments.

Albert Penello, director of global platform marketing for Xbox, has revealed in a little snippet of a quote to Reuters that Uno is the first game to be downloaded one million times from Xbox Live Arcade.
"What!?" screamed a flabbergasted CVG Xbox channel ed Andy Robinson, who then went on a d-pad crushing rampage through the Live Arcade menus shouting out all the games that he thinks are "miles better".
If it was humanly possible for him to download Lumines 1.2 million times in the next hour of work, you'd be reading a "We stand corrected" story tomorrow from Reuters.

via Games Industry
UK Xbox boss Neil Thompson has revealed more of the company's plans for 360, explaining the thinking behind the decision to offer consumers a range of hardware options.
Speaking in a recent interview with Eurogamer TV Thompson said, "The whole strategy with Xbox 360 was that the way we built it from the Core machine up to the pro machine is, we could do two things. One, we could offer consumer choice, so they could come in whenever they wanted to, and decide to add onto it.
"But also, that gives us some flexibility, in that we can make offerings that we can change and move within the context of the Core system. So over the next two or three years I think, yes, we’re in an evolutionary stage."
Microsoft yesterday announced plans to launch a new iteration in the Xbox 360 range in North America on April 29. Priced at USD 479, the Xbox 360 Elite will come with a HDMI port and 120GB hard drive.
But according to Thompson, the company's main focus will continue to be on the content available for the platform.
"The thing that really enables us to evolve the experience of 360 isn’t so much the hardware, it’s the software and the services," he said.
"The definition of the 360 is about the fact that we can make the machine you bought today different in a year’s time through the software and the services that we can deliver, and change what that machine can do and enhance it and make it better."
Following the unveiling of Xbox 360 Elite, Microsoft has been keen to emphasise that the Core and Premium packages will still be available and that consumers will have a range of options to choose from.
Thompson confirmed that the Core system, which doesn't come with a hard drive, is "doing very well", adding, "It’s actually doing slightly ahead of what our prediction was in terms of the split.
"I think more and more people are choosing how they want to use their 360, or whether they even get a second 360 for the home because they want to extend it to another room because of the kids et cetera," he continued.
"I think it serves the part of the market that we designed it for - we’re very happy with where that’s at."
The full interview with Thompson will be broadcast on Eurogamer TV soon.

Bioshock fans are a vocal bunch and went as far as to demand 2K Games create a collector's edition for their underwater adventure. So, a fan created an online petition to rally support for a Bioshock CE and possibly ruffle a few of 2K Games' feathers in the process. The online petition didn't go unnoticed, because 2K Games posted a response on the Cult of Rapture website stating they'd create a collector's edition if the petition received 5,000 signatures. And we're proud to report that as of this posting the petition has just gone over the 5,000 signature mark! We still recommend signing the petition if your inner fanboy yearns for a Bioshock CE, because more signatures can only help. Now we just have to wait for Gamestop to put up a Bioshock CE preorder page. The ball is in your court 2K Games ... you did make

So, a much bigger Xbox 360 hard drive is a good thing, right? Well ... not when it comes with some fairly crippling conditions. Wired has the skinny on some of the small print on Microsoft's new little "Elite" storage device:
You cannot put the data from two or more 20 GB hard disks onto one 120 GB hard disk. If you attempt to move multiple drives, only the last one you move will be stored.
You can only move data from the 20GB Hard Disk to the 120 GB Hard Disk. Transferring data in the other direction, or any other combination, is not possible.
Any data stored on the 120 GB hard disk will be automatically deleted.
Any data stored on the 20 GB hard disk will be automatically deleted after it is moved over.
Once you move the data over, it cannot be placed back on the original hard disk.
That first bullet point sticking out at ya, just a bit? It might rub a lot of people the wrong way, especially since Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg told everyone to buy two 20GB HDDs back when they released all of the TV and movie content, and people were worried storing everything. Zoinks.
It's hard to think about people not getting just a bit cheesed about this. If you have two hard drives, that Microsoft told you to buy, and then when they finally release the new bigger drive and then tell you that you can only put one drive's worth of good on it, that's a pretty bitter pill they're asking you to swallow.
We've contacted Microsoft to get some answers on how that data cable does its business.
