It's obscure game week on Xbox Live Arcade, with Wednesday seeing the release of Gastronaut Studio's Gel: Set & Match and Vector 2 Games' Blazing Birds.
Gel: Set & Match is a puzzle game which features multicolored blocks that melt as you match them together, with an Action mode that adds a little side-scrolling to the mix. The game has both online co-op in Puzzle and Action modes, along with a Battle mode that allows for competitive online play.
Meanwhile, Blazing Birds is a badminton game played between two robots. Robot...badminton. It really doesn't look that bad, judging by the trailer I snagged from Vector 2's website below.
Both games run 800 Microsoft points, and both seem to have their own special sort of charm. After the recent Days of Arcade promotion, it's nice to see a couple games pop up on Xbox Live Arcade that haven't been hyped to death. Either strike your fancy?

KOEI has announced that Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires will be released for PS3 and Xbox 360 on 26th June.
The game adds tactical elements to the hack-and-slash mix. There's the choice between being a ruler or an officer, for example, where the former uses a mixture of politics and power to unite ancient China while the latter acts as a freelancer, whose renown and responsibility increases with each battle.
Cards can be acquired along the way that improve the state of your population and force your followers to do what you say.
You'll be able to create your own hero, too, or become a new character not seen in Dynasty Warriors 6. Six of the existing heroes have also been given new weapons and moves, plus there's extra levels and stages to explore.

DJ Shadow reckons the amount of freedom DJ Hero offers players over licensed music will "raise some eyebrows" this autumn.
"I don't think a lot of the people that made some of the music we're involved with have ever allowed their music to be so freely messed with, you know what I mean? And I think that this game - I definitely think it will raise some eyebrows on that level," DJ Shadow told Game Informer.
DJ Hero is in development for PS2, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360. And, like Guitar Hero, the game comes with its very own peripheral - a plastic turntable.
We've not see the device in action, but DJ Shadow said any eight year-old kid will be perfectly happy with it.
"Well to me the best way to answer that would be, 'Would this make some eight year old kid who got it for Christmas want to try the real thing?' And I think in that respect the answer is yes," said DJ Shadow.
"Because, you know, it's not the real thing, obviously - but to me when I played it, the first couple of times I was kind of like sensory overload trying to figure out, 'Wow, OK, so this does this and that does that.'
"I mean I've heard people say that with Guitar Hero it's the same thing, like just because you're virtuoso, just because you're Joe Satriani doesn't mean that you're going to be able to kick right into Guitar Hero and be an incredible game player. It's the same with DJ Hero, it takes practice to kind of not look like an idiot," he added.
DJ Shadow lent not only his name and likeness to the project, but also his opinion, which he described as a "bulls***-proof radar". That entailed suggesting the music and mixes to use, as well as checking various samples had been cleared. He's been quite hands-on, apparently.
As for gameplay, players will have to simulate what's being heard with two records and sample track, he said. But don't expect lots of previously unheard DJ Shadow music, as Activision caught him at a time when he didn't have "a lot of new material sitting around".
"So there isn't going to be any of my new stuff in the game, at least not in the first version, maybe in a subsequent version or in download form or something like that," he said.

Stephen Toulouse, in charge of Xbox Live Policy and "Enforcement", has explained Microsoft's stance on dealing with those dirty, Gamerscore cheats.
Speaking on Major Nelson's podcast, he explained that "through a combination of profile resigning - which is against our terms of use - or what's known as glitching," people would "try to trade profiles as fast as you can to confuse the console and it might pass an achievement."
But if you earn an achievement while you're not actually playing the game, that's against MS's terms of use.
When asked if Gamerscores could be reset over just one game, Toulouse said, "I'm going to go ahead and admit that the bar is a little bit higher than that, because we are a little bit conservative. It resets your score to zero but it also puts a tag that you've been caught cheating on your Gamercard. Since that's a pretty big scarlet letter, we want to make sure that we're absolutely sure."
You've been warned kids. Play nice.

One of Microsoft's worst kept secrets, Forza Motorsport 3, has seemingly leaked yet again, via an internet listing for its official strategy guide.
The Forza Motorsport 3 Prima game guide appeared on Amazon.de today, and it's the latest leak pointing to a surely inevitable reveal at Microsoft's E3 press conference next month.
The listing follows the first official glimpse of the game via a slide that appeared during a Microsoft Brazil press briefing (skip to 6:58 in the video below).
The third instalment in the Turn 10 racing series is far from a secret though, as details on the game were leaked last summer, followed by yet another leak earlier this year with artwork from the game.
According to the smuggled details, Forza 3 will include over 100 tracks and 400 cars on a two-disc set. E3, here we come...

It's been awhile since we've heard from J Allard; the man who assumed responsibility for Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division (think: Zune and Xbox) in mid 2008 in an effort to unify the experience into a centralized package. Now Microsoft's CTO and CXO (that's, Chief eXperience Office) has co-signed a patent application for a "Magic Wand" first filed in November of 2007 and made public just a few days ago. The patent application reads very much like a Wiimote, hand-held controller,
"The architecture can utilize one or more sensor from a collection of sensors to determine an orientation or gesture in connection with the wand, and can further issue an instruction to update a state of an environmental component based upon the orientation."
It's worth remembering that Microsoft has been rumored to be working on such a controller since at least August 2007. Something they've apparently scrapped for a camera-based solution that will allow gamers to control the action with their bodies and hand-gestures without requiring a hand-held controller -- you know, if current rumors are true. How many days until Microsoft's June 1st E3 press conference again?

Though we're running this one under the "likely an error and probably not a hot scoop" category, a listing for Battlefield Heroes on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 has appeared on the EA press site. Pointed out by GOONLINE (their caps, not ours), the listing posits a June 2009 release date -- interesting considering the PC version of the game has been marred by delays. The site also pegs the PC version with a September release, a significantly more solid release date than EA has provided as of late.
At this point, however, we'd like to note that the game's developer, DICE, has stated before its lack of interest in console ports of the game, telling Videogamer.com a year ago, "We could port the engine and do it, I just don't know what we would gain from it. Everyone's who's [sic] got a 360 or PS3 also will have a PC that can run this game." We've reached out for comment from EA and will update you when we hear more

After ages of monopolizing most of its add-on market for the 360, it looks like Microsoft is letting up a bit. Datel just came out with two new MAX Memory cards that are compatible with the console, in 2GB and 4GB capacities. That's all well and boring, but the potential excitement here is that cards can also be augmented by a microSD slot, with support for up to 16GB cards, for some trippy card-within-a-card hijinks, and what might be one of the best portals for hackers yet. Or perhaps not, since it seems likely that Microsoft wouldn't open up what it knew to be a major security hole, and given the numerous other interfaces with the console, the 360 is still pretty well on lockdown for the average user, after almost four years on the market. At least this should provide a slightly more flexible hard drive alternative for folks who don't want to shell out for Microsoft's overpriced humps. The Datel cards start at $40.

It looks like SNK is already preparing to outfit King of Fighters XII with DLC. The upcoming fighting game will have additional purchased content available on the Xbox Live Marketplace (as uncovered by Siliconera) and, presumably, on PSN as well. What that content is exactly, we don't know just yet; however, we assume this means more costumes and game modes a la Street Fighter IV. Maybe it means more characters ... like all the ones missing from the roster screen.
In addition to DLC, KoF XII has console-specific online modes. The PS3 version features a "Clan" mode which is not found on the 360 version (check out the image above); however, the 360 version has a "Ranked Match" option while the PS3 version does not. Hmm ... you don't think SNK would charge for these modes as paid DLC now, would it?

- Ubisoft finally appears ready to start talking about Splinter Cell: Conviction again. Head over to this new man of conviction teaser site and you'll be treated to the first of three reveals. The other two are slated to go live on May 20 and May 28, a perfect lead-up to a possible E3 showing. The site asks the question, "What makes a man confront his past?"
The first teaser has a trailer with the voice of Michael Ironside, known to Splinter Cell fans as the voice of Sam Fisher, narrating. In it, you can see a satellite view of Earth while Sam Fisher recounts important plot details that lead up to the happenings of Splinter Cell: Conviction. Fischer recalls losing his daughter, shooting his best friend, and being betrayed by the agency he works for.
The trailer ends with the satellite camera zooming in on the island of Malta, just south of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea while Fisher talks about a deal made with the agency to each go separate ways. Apparently the NSA isn't going to "let sleeping dogs lie" as Fisher seems to believe since the top of the video shows the words "Target Acquired."
