Look, we fully understand that September 5th is a long ways out, but don't think for a second that Microsoft isn't inking every last detail of its Zune HD launch in stone. That said, Windows expert and all-around good guy Paul Thurrott has been "told" that this very player will ship exactly on the fifth day of the ninth month of this year. Needless to say, that jibes with Microsoft's official line ("this fall"), but sadly, we've no other information to go on at the moment. In other words, feel free to pencil this one in, but keep that eraser handy -- cool?

We get the feeling this isn't the motion sensing surprise that's likely in store for Xbox 360 fans at E3, but it's still great to see this controller moving beyond the hype stage. After being spied late last year and detailed around two months ago, the Gametrak Freedom motion controller is now listed at GameStop with an October 15th ship date. The controller, which will come bundled with Squeeballs: Island Party for the Xbox 360, is already up for pre-order, promising gamers who shell out $69.99 a grand total of 11 motion sensing party games. Unfortunately, there's no word on how much extra Freedom sticks will run, but based on the price of this kit, we'd wager not much.

Yesterday we got dropped that image of a Bungie forums search menu, which tipped something called "Halo: Reach." Such things are easily faked, and I couldn't run it down. Well, now someone's found a cache of since-deleted Bungie forum posts on this subject.
As you can see, for a brief time there was a forum for something called "Halo: Reach." A 2001 novel called "Halo: The Fall of Reach" is official, canonical, and functions as the prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved. It was also the basis for a spec script Stuart Beattie wrote for a Halo movie. Also, back in September, Phil Spencer indicated four Halo "things" were in development, two being Halo Wars, the Halo: Chronicles project said to be linked to Peter Jackson. A third can be assumed to be Halo 3: ODST, announced about a month after that interview. So is Halo: Reach the fourth thing?
The anonymous guy who gave us the search menu image yesterday claimed Halo: Reach is slated for Fall 2010, and this forum plus an ODST forum will go live June 1. Take that with a truckload of salt, but I guess it could point to an E3 announce for this Reach thing.
The site Skoar! has posted links to cached forum posts, on Bungie.net, referencing the slip-up. I took a screen shot (below) in case the cache has been cleared out by the time you read this. There's also discussion of it on Halo.Bungie.Org.

"Up until now, the portable media player and its online iTunes Store equivalent, Zune Marketplace, have only been available in the US. From early Autumn, however, a revised service, Zune Video, will be available on Xbox Live in the US, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Ireland and Spain (with more countries coming aboard later). Xbox 360 owners in these territories will be able to go online and access video content and play it via their console. A variety of access options will be available, including instant streaming, download to rent and download to own. However, no Zune portable music players will be launched outside of the US - at least not yet. This is about the online service only."
It's still fairly difficult to determine what Microsoft's strategy around an international release will be. So far they've been tight-lipped about their specific plans with regards to launching the Zune services outside of North America or Western Europe, and even the Zune HD doesn't look like it'll make it outside of the US. This seems like a poor strategy, and one I really hope they fix before the HD launches in the fall.

"Having just played with a prototype for a few minutes, I'm really impressed with the Zune HD. I've got a video, too, showing off how well the animations work. The device is tighter and more physically beautiful than the iPod Touch and it's got a better UI, the main menu's scrolling so natural through the swipe gestures."
The boys at Gizmodo got a chance to check out the Zune HD in person, and managed to not only snap a bunch of geek-lust-incuding photos, they also managed to get it on video - and their camera person understood the whole "focus" thing a bit better.

With just days to go before the gaming world goes wild at E3, the hotly anticipated DJ Hero is now spinning on its very own website. Granted, a few of the sections are still labeled as "coming soon," but we're given a few more sneak peeks at the hardware, the gameplay and even a duo of handy links to pre-order it. According to listings on both GameStop and Amazon, the software and turntable are slated to ship on October 27th, with the bundle priced at $119.99 for all four of the major consoles (yes, new games are still being made for the PS2). Better still, the latter e-tailer has the Jay-Z Special Edition Bundle listed for Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's Wii, though neither of those are accompanied by MSRPs or expected ship dates. And to think, those are just two of our 99 problems...

Speaking of budget publishers… you won’t believe who picked up the rights to Way of the Samurai 3. UFO Interactive will release Spike’s conversational samurai game in North America for $49.99 sometime in the future. (Thanks for the tip Hero of Legend!!)
Way of the Samurai 3 is only listed as an Xbox 360 game on their site even though a PlayStation 3 version is out in Japan. Maybe UFO Interactive isn’t a licensed PS3 developer yet? No word about the downloadable content that lets you dress your samurai as a spartan and in cardboard box armor either.
UFO Interactive also stealth announced a bunch of other games Wii games like Army Rescue, Domino Rally (aka Go! Go! Minon), Saint (aka Daisaiou which is based on Journey to the West), and Reversal Challenge (this is for the DS).
We also know Raiden IV’s price it’s $39.99, which is going to be a tough sale since Raiden Fighters Aces is half of that.

Sega is set to begin the second round of downloadable "vintage" games, starting with XBLA's Gunstar Heroes on June 10, with the PSN version hitting the following day. Gunstar Heroes appears to be the only title planned for the PSN from the seven announced titles.
Although the seven games have been "re-worked" for high-definition, with online leaderboards and network play, it's worth mentioning that many of the titles are also available on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

The original Nazi-killing first-person shooter returns next week, as Activision announces the release date for Wolfenstien 3D for Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network.
All 60 levels of Wolfenstein 3D will be hitting both consoles on June 4th, giving gamers something more constructive to do than refreshing gaming websites for the latest news out of E3. And while the original Wolfenstein 3D might not be as fun to play today as it was when it was originally released back in 1992, but Activision has included plenty of incentive take on Mecha-Hitler one more time. Perhaps taking a cue from the Fable II Pub Games, playing through Wolfenstein 3D on your Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 will earn you accolades and gold to pay for weapons upgrades in Wolfenstein, the next chapter in the series due out August 4. Very sneaky.
There's no mention of any upgrades to the game, so it looks like it's a straight port, and there's no mention of a price either, so we're just going to have to wait and see what's announced between now and next week.

Square Enix will be bringing a previously unannounced game to E3 this year. Front Mission Evolved, being developed by Double Helix Games, is a third-person shooter for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. It has no release window as of yet.
Front Mission Evolved is described as an "action-packed third-person shooter" that gives players control of the wanzer. What is a wanzer? Good question. Apparently it is a "massive humanoid war machine." I like to call those mechs. The game will feature a full single player campaign and online multiplayer.
Double Helix is also currently working on G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra – The Game.

Criterion Games has announced an 11th June release date for Big Surf Island on PS3 and Xbox 360.
This is the next beefy premium update for Burnout Paradise that finally offers a bridge out of the city to an area offering the biggest jumps in the game and a new sense of freedom. There's no word on cost, yet.
There's a lovely video of the content over on the official Criterion website.
Despite being released at the very beginning of 2008, Burnout Paradise continues to regularly expand as Criterion provides a shining example of what post-release DLC can offer.

Atari's latest financial results reveal that the publisher expects to release the Xbox 360 version of Cryptic's superhero MMO Champions Online this year, and follow it up with Star Trek Online before the end of March 2010.
The PC version of Champions Online recently had its release delayed from June to September 1st in North America and 4th in Europe.
Atari's earnings statement says the game will be released on "PC in September 2009, X-Box in Q3" of its 2009/2010 fiscal year. Atari's financial year runs from April to March, which would put release of the 360 version sometime between October and December of this year.
On Star Trek Online, also being developed by Cryptic, the statement says: "This game is expected to benefit from the success of the newest Star Trek film (release for the videogame is expected by the end of this fiscal year)." So that would be before the end of March 2010.
Cryptic's developers are clearly busy bees. "Cryptic Studios is working on the development of a series of new games based on Atari’s existing and historically successful IPs," adds the statement.

Lionhead has promised "a big presentation" during the Microsoft E3 conference, which runs on Monday, 1st June from 6.30pm UK time (BST). And we'll be reporting live from the event, remember.
"Lionhead is off to LA for this year's E3 and will give a big presentation at the Microsoft press conference on Monday! Watch this space," reads the company's Twitter.
This, we presume, will be the next project Peter Molyneux has been trailing. After all, he told us he had something ready to show when we talked to him at GDC, but that the revelation date was out of his hands.
"Two things need to happen before we can tell the world," he told us. "Microsoft has to see the sense in what we're doing, and we've got to absolutely have something to show you. This is the rule now, the rule I've set myself - I will absolutely not talk about anything, any concepts or ideas, until I've got something tangible to show.
"We're almost there on the tangible thing, and we've been showing it round internally. It's probably the best reaction I've ever seen to anything I've done.
"I would show you now if it was up to me. Right this second, on that TV there," he added.
Peter went on to describe the project as "insanely simple" and is puzzled why he took so long to conjure the idea. The Lionhead boss has also called the game "ridiculously ambitious" and likened its creation to a "scientific achievement".
A lot to live up to, but Molyneux promised that Fable II would cement his reputation which, thankfully, it did - and with flying colours.

EA's set to kick of a 'worldwide community challenge' for downloadable Battlefield game, 1943.
Players on both PSN and XBLA will be rewarded with a fourth, unlockable map called Coral Sea, once the community has achieved 43 million kills on either platform.
"Coral Sea is designed to showcase the intense battle in the skies, offering an all-new Air superiority game mode," says EA. "The legendary WWII action this map provides will have players dog fighting in this airplanes-only map, proving once again DICE delivers on a first class online vehicle warfare experience better than anyone else!"
Players will be able to track the progress of their respective console communities www.battlefield.com/1943. There's no word on how it'll work for PC.
Battlefield 1943 is set to appear on both console online services ($14.99, 1200 MS Points) "this summer". Read our recent hands-on for more info.

London-based developer Splash Damage has revealed that its secret project with Fallout 3 publisher Bethesda Softworks is an original IP named Brink.
Although a teaser trailer has been released to sister site Eurogamer.net, it reveals little about the game - with only a brief hint at a science fiction themed storyline. Splash Damage's experience though has so far solely been in first-person shoots such as Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz earlier in the month Bethesda's European managing director Sean Brennan confirmed the game was a FPS, saying: "That's a product that we believe is a genre-breaker, it's a real killer app."
"From a quality perspective we're pitching that along the same lines as Fallout 3. We've kept it under lock and key, there are so many innovative features in there we don't want to reveal them too soon. We've spent significant resources developing the title. And that's a great example of our European work," he added.
The game it is due to be released in spring 2010 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. It will also being demonstrated in more detail at E3 next week.
Bethesda and Splash Damage signed a long-term development partnership in May of last year, as part of the former's attempts to increase their influence in the European market.

US Americans, go ahead and enjoy your Netflix streaming over your Xbox 360, Brits are about to land a deal that'll put live football, TV, and films over Microsoft's broadband-enabled console -- a first live television service for Xbox 360 anywhere. Beginning in Autumn, Xbox Live subscribers in the UK and Ireland will gain access to Sky's Sky Player service that includes subscription-based live, on-demand, and pay-per-view access to your favorite shows without the need for an additional set-top-box or satellite dish. Unfortunately, specifics like prices and channel line-up have not been announced, though content is expected to be similar to the Sky Player service already available on Macs and PCs. Of interest, Xbox Live users will be able to watch sporting content together virtually and sling insults and taunts at one-another via avatars or virtual personas. Something that will lead to slurring songs in a fit of semi-social inebriation or fisticuffs, depending on the score.
