While avoiding the juicier questions surrounding the mystery of Project Pink and its potential ties to Verizon for maximizing Pink's launch, a Microsoft spokesperson has issued new comments that reiterate the stance Redmond has held from time immemorial: there's no Zunephone, and furthermore, there won't be any Microsoft-branded phones.
Of course, the devil could lie in the precise wording, and the exact quote was as follows: "Microsoft is not going into the phone hardware business. Microsoft is not building a Zune-specific phone." Just because there's not a "Zune-specific phone" doesn't mean you can't steal some Zune tech for the phone business, and we have every reason to believe that Microsoft would want to be building Zune-esque features into Windows Mobile -- you can start to see tiny slivers of that in 6.5 with the home screen design, for example -- so we're still pretty confident that Pink (or another project) will ultimately marry portions of the technology and branding. In other words: Zunephone, no; Zune on Windows Mobile, though? Yeah, sure, why not?

Continuing the onslaught of Capcom news today, Eurogamer reports that Lost Planet 2 producer Jun Takeuchi said the game will not only be playable at E3, but that folks at home looking to get their hands on the game should be able to download a demo from Xbox Live Marketplace at some point during the show. So, you'll get to read our impressions right away, and then offer some unique insights of your own through the comments section. Neat!
The Capcom Unity blog has dropped a new trailer and several screens for us to gawk at, as well as some new details on the game, to add to your excitement for an impending demo. The title will feature 6 different episodes, and allow players to take up the role of their own unique snow pirate. As the snow pirate factions fight for control of the newly tropical EDN III, the game will change "depending upon the actions of the players involved." Capcom says players should expect to see the plot evolve from multiple characters' perspectives. The publisher also discussed the the four-player co-op and confirmed the presence of a ranking system.

Microsoft has said that Xbox Live Primetime quiz game 1 vs. 100 will be free to everyone with an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
Based on the TV show of the same name, 1 vs. 100 pits a single player against a mob of opponents, and the object is for "the one" to get enough answers correct to outlast the others, who are eliminated and therefore thinned out somewhat if they get their answers wrong.
Players will be represented by Avatars, and according to IGN there are real prizes to be won, including Xbox Live Arcade games and Microsoft Points.
1 vs. 100 is due out this spring for Xbox 360.

It's official, Marvel VS Capcom 2 is coming out for PSN and XBLA!
Source: http://www.capcom-unity.com/sven/blo...s_mvc2_is_real
In what will inevitably go down as the worst kept industry secret in recent years, I’m very happy to finally be able to confirm that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will be coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this summer.
The deal took a good while but it’s probably our most requested title to bring back, so Marvel and I and a few other people here at Capcom rolled up our sleeves and got it done. I can’t stress enough, if you ask for something loudly enough and long enough, we’ll work very hard to make it happen.
So while you may have been able to surmise that something was going on with MvC2, we do still have a few surprises up our sleeves. Let me tell you a little more about how and why this version of MvC2 will be the definitive version.
1. It’s based on the Dreamcast code base – While the PS2 and Xbox versions of MvC2 were great, there are a few niggling issues in them that have caused the competitive community to continue using the Dreamcast version of the game. We wanted to bring you the very best version of the game, so we listened to the community and started with the Dreamcast.
2. There is online – With the game being developed by Backbone, we are using largely the same, critically acclaimed net code that we used in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix and with that will come our player match quarter mode/lobby system that has proven so popular. Naturally leaderboards and some form of stats tracking (details to be provided at a later date) will also be in the mix. So on the net code side, you’re pretty much assured the best fighting game net code ever created for consoles.
3. HD upscaling options – Given that most people play Xbox 360s and PS3s on HD TVs, it’s important to help make the game look better. We’ve refined our real-time sprite filtering to use even more advanced techniques and we’re providing two upscaling options for the sprites… one we’ve termed “Crisp” the other we’ve termed “Smooth”. It’s a matter of personal preference for which one you’ll enjoy more. For purists, if you’d like you can use the “Classic” setting, which leaves the sprites completely unfiltered. Because the filtering is applied in real-time, you can change these settings on the fly, mid-match if you choose. Our producer will be showing you some comparison screenshots in the coming days to better clarify the differences. The backgrounds in MvC2 are all 3D, and when rendered at higher resolutions look fantastic. The original textures and assets from the Dreamcast were actually much higher quality than the Dreamcast could really display at the time and when shown in HD, the impact is really quite amazing.
4. Widescreen – Again, with most people playing on HD displays, we wanted to figure out how to implement widescreen support. To do so, the camera field of view was widened (which we’re able to do because of the 3D backgrounds effectively running off the “edges” of the 4:3 scenario) and there are a few camera tricks that minimize any impact on the gameplay. Play area is unchanged, and this is not a zoom and crop like HD Remix was. To put it simply, the gameplay area will be in a 4:3 field, while the viewing area will be widescreen. At the same time, for purists and competitive play, a 4:3 option (with vertical bars on the left and right) still exists.
5. No unlocking – While we love giving people unlockables in games, for this outing, there’s not a lot of surprises in terms of what characters are in the game. All 56 characters will be unlocked at the start for immediate play, again great for tournament play where players won’t need to mess with save game data or hacked versions (/shame).
6. Music Options – We love MvC2 but the original “jazzy” music has long been criticized even by ardent fans. Independent music volume controls and support of custom soundtracks on PS3 and 360 we deemed an important feature. Purists will still have what they love and fans of customization are also served.
And as an added bonus, some of you will get to play it sooner than you think. The US PlayStation network will have the demo available for download this week (Europe’s PSN should follow not far after). Surprise.

Do you miss Max Payne? For $15 (US) you can find out why the hard-boiled detective became popular in the first place with both brief but intense action titles. According to a press release, Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne should be available now on the Xbox Live Marketplace, joining the ranks of the Xbox Originals.
Max Payne was originally released as a PC game back in 2001, then later made its way to Xbox in December of that year. Max Payne 2 was released in 2002. Both games featured plenty of third-person shooting sequences and emphasized the use of 'bullet time,' a special mode of play that could be frequently triggered to slow down the game world, making it easier to spectacularly gun down Max's many enemies.
You can find more on Max Payne for Xbox here, more on Max Payne 2 here, and coverage of the other Xbox Originals here.

Banjo-Kazooie's long lost secrets have been exposed, via a video showing the illusive "Stop 'n Swop" feature that has been re-implemented into Banjo-Tooie for Xbox Live Arcade.
Stop 'n Stop was originally teased and intended for the original N64 Banjo-Tooie, but ultimately canned before release. The feature allows you to move items from the original Banjo-Kazooie into Tooie for special rewards.
"4J Studios have dredged the Banjo team's collective memory and implemented the original plan for Stop 'n' Swop, for the first time on any platform ever and after many long years of waiting," Rare promised in the XBLA game's announcement.
But, as the video reveals, we very much doubt a 360 Gamerpic and Dashboard theme were part of the "original" N64 plan (the other unlocked rewards were already in the original 'Tooie). What's the deal then, Rare?
Banjo-Tooie's out on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, April 29 for 1200 Microsoft points (about £10).
Thanks, RareWitchProject.

At a recent press event, Bethesda's VP of Marketing and Public Relations Pete Hines told attendees not to hold their breath in regards to a new game in the Elder Scrolls franchise. The team led by Todd Howard that is responsible for the Elder Scrolls games -- including Morrowind and Oblivion – as well as Fallout 3 will remain quiet for now. As Hines plainly stated, "The next big project announcement is not coming anytime soon."
Those hoping to revisit Tamriel in the interim can look forward to two books currently in the works, to be published by Del Ray books. The first, penned by Greg Keyes, is titled "The Infernal City" and picks up the story at the end of the events from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It is due out this fall.

HardcoreWare reports that the release candidate for Windows 7 contains improved video codecs, and does a much better job of streaming media to popular consoles out of the box. "No longer will you have to install special REG files to 'trick' Windows into streaming video to your PS3 or XBOX 360. And no longer will you have to use UPnP media servers like TVersity that transcode video, severely reducing quality and cause unnecessary CPU load on the server

Until now the rules surrounding what developers can and can't do with Xbox 360 Achievements has been a bit hazy, especially considering so much has changed since Microsoft's last official guidelines were released in 2007.
Thankfully for those of you losing sleep over it (and we know some of you are), a "credible source" has spilled the beans on Microsoft's Achievement rules to Euro outlet Xbox360Achievements.org. Here they are...
Maximum Additions: 1750 Gamerscore, 80 Achievements
"This explains Halo's mad jump to 1750 late last year, as well as Gears 2, Fable 2 and Fallout 3 passing 1250, and announced jumps for GTA and Saints Row 2. Obviously the old max of 1250 is smashed to bits, though the number is a bit odd. Why not 1500 or 2000? Regardless, we still have one rule-breaker with The Orange Box sitting at 99 achievements.
That will perhaps be the exception to the rule since it was apparently before these 'new' rules were set and since it is such a unique game overall. Valve swears they are going to add new achievements when (or at this point if) they release their Team Fortress 2 update. According to this, they are just talking through their teeth, because it won't be allowed. We'll see how that one plays out."
Maximum Additions Per Quarter: 250 Gamerscore, 10 Achievements
"This is an interesting stipulation, but it does explain some things. My source used Fallout 3 as an example, Bethesda only adding 100 points for each of the first two content packs, then going over 250 with the third pack, since it was a new quarter at that point. It also explains how Fable recently added 13 achievements from one single DLC, having only used up 3 achievements in its first quarter. Finally, Halo jumping straight to 1750 is also explained, since it had been over a year (four quarters) since the game's release when that happened."
Additionally, game developers are not allowed to provide new Achievements for DLC that's free, the site claims. This would explain why Left 4 Dead's just-released add-on pack is completely Gamerscore-free.

April 27th, 2009, 17:07 Posted By: wraggster
Horror movie director James Gunn has condemned Microsoft's handling of original video content for Xbox Live, describing the platform holder as "the most dreadful, non-talent friendly company".
Gunn wrote and filmed a number of short movies for Microsoft as part of Xbox Live's Horror Goes Comedy series. When signing up to the project he was promised "a lot of freedom", but according to Guun his films soon became subject to conservative content cuts and rejections.
"I still love Xbox gaming, but I think their original content plans are DOA, precisely because of situations like the experience I and some of the other directors had on the Horror Goes Comedy series," Gunn wrote on his blog.
Gunn pointed to Grand Theft Auto IV and downloadable episodes of South Park as proof of the popularity of adult content on the console.
"Microsoft wouldn't let us get close to the extremity of that material, so I don't know how in the world they planned to create their own successful original content," he explained. "People didn't want to see our shows, which were barely a half-step removed from something you'd see on the Disney Channel.
"It's a shame. I really think Xbox could have been its own Network, as well as a gaming console, DVR, and way to buy movies. I saw them as the future."
He concluded: "Because of the small-mindedness of the Microsoft executives, who pre-emptively censored a lot of our scenes for fear of freaking out stockholders, they crushed the potential for something that would have kept them relevant for a long time to come. It seems, instead, the visionaries have landed at other companies."

Konami has decided to pull out of publishing Atomic Games' controversial Six Days in Fallujah game, which had originally been slated for release next year.
The decision comes following a significant public backlash, specifically in the US, led by the families of soldiers who died in the conflict.
"After seeing the reaction to the videogame in the United States and hearing opinions sent through phone calls and email, we decided several days ago not to sell it," a PR representative from Konami told Asahi. "We had intended to convey the reality of the battles to players so that they could feel what it was like to be there."
The game tracked events in November 2004, a month that saw heavy resistance from insurgency fighters against the US occupying force, with over 2000 people killed.
It's not known at this point whether or not Atomic Games will seek an alternative publisher for the title, or whether Konami owns the IP.

Imagine our surprise when we woke up this morning to discover Electronic Theatre reporting that Fallout 3's 'Operation: Anchorage' and 'The Pitt' DLC would both be released at retail in a single package. We made a quick check on Amazon and, sure enough, there it is. According to Amazon, the packaged will be released for both PC and Xbox 360 on May 26 (Electronic Theatre is reporting May 29 for the UK) for $19.99. Both packs are currently $10 apiece, so the retail package won't save you any money, but the box says it comes with a free Vault Boy poster, so that's something, right?
Curiously absent from the package is the upcoming 'Broken Steel' DLC. We would think a (presumably) $30 package that added 12-15 hours to Fallout 3 and made it open-ended would be a no-brainer, but apparently Bethesda has other plans.
We've contacted Bethesda for further details and will update this post when we have new information

Not sure what "free Gold membership for the weekend" means other than "free multiplayer" - and maybe taking advantage of the deal of the week. But all European gamers get it May 1-4.
The annual event promises to offer gallons (sigh ... Imperial gallons) of fun with all of your favourite Xbox multiplayer titles. In addition, a rush party staff spanning 10 countries and languages will be on hand to proselytize on behalf of Microsoft.

Time is running out for you to make your own DIY Virtual On stick, as Sega has announced that Virtual On will be available for download on April 29. Sega's press release made no mention of price, so we sent out our Joystiq Attack Dogs™ to track down someone at Sega and extract the info. They came back and confirmed that the game will be priced the same in North America as in Japan: 1200 ($15). And for those of you who say that price is too great, know that these are high-tech machines you're paying for here. They aren't made of cardboard!
