What prompts a giant like Microsoft -- amidst layoffs and studio closures -- to purchase a Vancouver-based developer that's barely two years old? Aside from boasting a collection of 20-year industry veterans that have had their hands in franchises like Need For Speed, SSX and NBA Street, BigPark Inc. benefited from having its ideas being "very compatible" with those of Microsoft.
That's according to BigPark CEO and co-founder Hanno Lemke, who spoke to us regarding Microsoft's recently announced plans to acquire the studio and its "extremely talented group of people." BigPark's titles (including free-to-play tower defense game, Wizard Defense) focus on online social play, digital distribution and a direct-to-consumer model. Lemke suggested that his company's upcoming Xbox 360-exclusive game, which has been in development for more than a year, would be in line with what it had released before. Resulting from a fortuitous "meeting of the minds" between BigPark and Microsoft, the game is unlikely to be a typical product aimed at the Xbox's hardcore audience (no space marines here!), instead fitting in with Microsoft's "big push to broaden the audience." A casual, free-to-play title would certainly fit the description, if one were to speculate.
Though Lemke refrained from offering much detail, he confirmed that the "very new and different" title would be playable at next month's E3 -- and that it would break some rules. "[It's] pretty innovative in how it's delivered to consumers," he remarked. And if there's any doubt that the game plays a pivotal role in an audience expansion strategy, consider just what prompts a giant like Microsoft to purchase a Vancouver-based developer that's barely two years old. "It obviously goes beyond one game, right?"

You'll never forget how much some 720p videos cost on the Xbox 360 Marketplace.
Fans of the fighting arts may be wondering, like me, why some videos on the Xbox 360 Marketplace are so expensive. They have easy-to-remember price points, but those price points are high.
Want to watch an hour of Ring of Honor pro wrestling, brought to you by HD Net? The official listing shows that that will cost you 480 Microsoft points for standard definition, 720 points in high definition.

Microsoft honcho and screamer Steve Ballmer gave a speech today in Dallas as a guest of the Dallas Regional Chamber to deliver a speech at the Dallas Convention Center.
The topic: "The Role of Innovation in a Challenging Economy". The game connection: During his speech, Ballmer is quotes as saying, "Pay attention to the stuff we're announcing in the next month on Xbox." Ballmer did not elaborate more than that reports Victor Godinez from The Dallas Morning News.
Of course, next month is E3, and of course Microsoft will be announcing things for its Xbox 360 platform — things like the rumored motion controller. If it doesn't, Steve Ballmer still wants your undivided attention.

Official event tie-in set for PS3, PC and 360 this summer; Wii edition to hit later in 2009
Ashes Cricket 2009 for PS3, 360 and PC is set to be one of this summer’s key sporting titles, says Codemasters.
The game will go up against a raft of big summer sports titles including EA Grand Slam Tennis, Tiger Woods, Wii Sports Resort and Virtua Tennis 2009.
“The Ashes is set to be the sporting event of the summer and it’s great to be producing the official game of the Series,” said Codemasters producer Jamie Firth.
“In partnering with the development team at Transmission Games, Ashes Cricket 2009 is a cricket title with an unprecedented heritage that comes from two companies that know and love the sport. The Brian Lara titles became the number one cricket gaming brand for over ten years and it’s a reputation that we fully intend to continue with Ashes Cricket 2009.”
Ashes was first revealed on Gamespot earlier today, and is set to follow-up the firm’s hugely successful Brian Lara series. The title is fully licensed by cricketing bodies ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board), the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) and Cricket Australia, and features all official players, kit and stadia.
ECB commercial director John Perera added: “The Ashes is one of the iconic challenges in world sport. With cricket set to dominate the sporting calendar this summer we're delighted to be able to give cricket fans the chance to follow in the footsteps of their heroes and try and win back the Ashes for England.”
“Cricket as a sport lends itself extremely well to this type of treatment and we are pleased that with Codemasters technical expertise we will be providing gamers with the next best thing to be playing out in the middle. We are sure it will be a great success."
Ashes Cricket 2009 will be released this summer on PS3, 360 and PC, with a Wii edition scheduled for later in the year.

2K Games has announced that it has signed on Digital Extremes to develop the multiplayer game for BioShock 2. The group is said to be working closely with 2K Marin, the team responsible for the single player game, in the effort to develop a "substantial element that enhances the lore and fiction of the BioShock Universe."
The multiplayer game will take place during the fall of Rapture as players take on the role of Plasmid test subjects for Sinclair Solutions. This game will reportedly expand the BioShock fiction and reveal more about the fall of Rapture.
As far as gameplay goes, little has been revealed aside from a leveling system. Experience points will be earned during matches that will give players access to new weapons, Plasmids and Tonics. Locations will include the Kashmir Restaurant and Mercury Suites, built from the ground up specifically for multiplayer.
2K president Christoph Hartmann said, "The fans asked for a multiplayer experience and we answered. With Digital Extremes delivering a multiplayer experience for BioShock 2 that features all of the things that make BioShock unique, we're holding ourselves to a high standard so that we can deliver the depth and variety that fans of the BioShock universe demand."
Digital Extremes is best known for its work on the Unreal franchise. Most recently, it developed Dark Sector for Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3.

demo of two-wheeled racer SBK '09 is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Go mental.
The 2009 version boasts all the Tracks, teams and riders you'd expect from the official license, plus "for the first time ever" in a motorbike racing game, SBK09 features visible damage on fairings and rider leathers. Excellent.
"With SBK09 Superbike World Championship, we try to reach both new motorbike enthusiasts as well as hardcore riders offering them a real championship whenever they fancy jumping on a virtual bike, improving their performance and competing against turns and time," explains Black Bean marketing man Fabrizio Vagliasindi (say that 10 times quickly).
It's out on May 29 for PC, PS3, 360, PSP and PS2.

The first details on F1 2010 have emerged, and Codies is already claiming "we've got the best F1 game ever".
"Literally nothing less will do. F1 games haven't set the world alight over the last decade and we think that the sport deserves a game which really captures its excitement and glamour," exec producer Gavin Raeburn told OXM.
Codies' F1 effort, which will be released when next year's championship is in "full swing", uses the impressive engine and tech behind GRID.
Raeburn promises to make "the drama and rivalry" of F1 part of the experience, plus the obligatory technical stuff like handling that changes depending on grip levels and weather conditions.
"The online component is as important as the single-player experience," he added. "Key to this is enabling people to find and play with the right people. If you're an arcade fan playing F1 online you probably want to play with like-minded players in shorter racers, rather than end up in a hardcore sim session."
More details and concept art can be found in the latest issue of OXM, on sale now.

You can’t tell from a screenshot, but Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is a 3D game. Not just polygons instead of pixels 3D game, it’s Rad Racer 3D. When I played the game I was given a pair of glasses to put on. A few moments after putting them on the screen changed from a headache inducing blurry mess to Han Tao leaping towards me to grab a vine.
When wearing the glasses the Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao stands out from being just another kung fu themed beat em up. The catch is you need the right gear. I played the game on a 3D enabled TV and with special glasses — better than the red and blue ones packaged with 3D World Runner. You can turn off the 3D filter at anytime, but the faux holographic feel of Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is what really made the downloadable PlayStation Network / Xbox Live Arcade game different.
However, 3D enabled TVs and glasses aren’t common equipment. A Namco Bandai representative explained they are trying to get the 3D effect to work with as many TVs and for as many users as possible. I asked about bundling a download code with a pair of 3D glasses and selling Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao in stores. They aren’t sure if they can do that.
It would be a bummer if there wasn’t a simple way for the average gamer to play Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao in real 3D. Perhaps, resorting to the classic red and blue glasses would work? This is a neat trick for a downloadable game and since Blitz Games developed the technology they can also use it in the future too, that is if the Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is successful.

This week's Xbox Live Arcade offering Arkanoid Live! may include a hidden charge that users must pay in order to finish the game.
Microsoft asks for 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60) for Arkanoid Live!, but Xbox.com forum members (as well as Eurogamer readers and posters on the Major Nelson blog) claim this only covers episodes one and two, and that a further 400 MSP (GBP 3.40 / EUR 4.80) is needed to unlock episodes three and four.
The "Full Game - Arkanoid Live!" listing on XBLA only mentions the initial 800 MSP charge.
We've contacted Microsoft to comment.
Arkanoid is based on the old retro game Breakout, where balls bounce off a Pong-style paddle into block patterns above. The DS version was appalling, although we've yet to tackle the XBLA attempt.

SEGA forum admin RubyEclipse claims Virtua Tennis 2009 has been pushed back a month to June.
The thread says polishing the Wii version, which features Wii MotionPlus controls, is the reason for the delay. The new US target for all versions - PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 - is 2nd June. We're waiting to hear back from SEGA about European plans.
That potentially sits the release of Virtua Tennis 2009 right next to EA's Grand Slam Tennis, which also has Wii MotionPlus controls. The latter will bundle the WMP accessory at launch on 12th June for an added tenner.
We served and volleyed with Virtua Tennis 2009 on Wii and PS3 recently, and were very impressed.

Ubisoft is releasing DLC for its aerial dogfighter HAWX on PS3 and 360 today. The US Eagles pack brings five new aircraft to the game and costs costs 400 Microsoft points (GBP 3.40 / EUR 4.80 ), or GBP 3.99 / EUR 4.99 on PSN.
The planes in question are the beautiful SR-71 Blackbird (otherwise known as the X-Men's ride), the F-111 Aardvark, the crazy flying wedge of the A-12 Avenger (a stealth bomber prototype), the F-15 Peak Eagle variant, and the F-4 Phantom II, a fighter that will be legendary to Airfix model-builders of a certain age.
There's no confirmation of the pack's availability, future or otherwise, on PC.

Disney's upcoming G-Force game will include 3D options.
G-Force, based on an upcoming film about guinea pig spec-ops, will use off-axis 3D with red/blue-lens glasses, Kotaku reports.
Apparently it's a system where - thank f*** for Wikipedia - "the optical axis of the aperture is not coincident with the mechanical centre of the aperture". Makes sense. A toggle will be available through G-Force on both PS3 and 360.
As previously announced, Wii title Toy Story Mania also uses 3D for some of its mini-games.

By now, this point should be drilled into game makers' skulls. The games industry has morphed into a service-based business. Downloadable content matters. Not only does it increase the longevity of titles both on and off the retail shelf--driving new game sales and preventing trade-ins--it is also an easy way to squeeze out some extra cash from that big-budget boxed product. Hell. A lot of cash.
Activision has announced that the first chunk of downloadable content for Call of Duty World At War, Map Pack 1, has now sold 2 million units. That $9.99 pack of four maps has generated nearly $20 million.
It's another sign that downloadable content is turning into a big business. John Riccitiello, chief executive of Electronic Arts, stated during the company's earnings call that all Electronic Arts titles would be open to digital expansions. Game downloads and microtransactions generated $80 million in revenues for the company last year, and Riccitiello expects EA's online business to exceed $500 million this fiscal year.
Some game players may grimace at the thought of spending extra cash for new maps, but it's a good thing for the industry as it's another revenue model it can turn to "boxed product" business begins to dwindle.

Ignition Entertainment is calling on King of Fighters fans to choose the box art for the upcoming Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release of The King of Fighters XII. After heated protests from the elaborately coiffed Ash Crimson fan contingent were thoroughly disregarded, Ignition has narrowed the choices down to two for each console. Fans can cast a vote for either heroic Kyo Kusanagi or his more scurrilous rival, Iori Yagami, on the official Ignition USA forums.
For the first time in its history, The King of Fighters franchise has undergone a complete graphical overhaul. The King of Fighters franchise celebrates its 15th anniversary in style with its legendary 3-on-3 format, fluid high-resolution animations and 100% hand-drawn backgrounds. The King of Fighters XII will be available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this July.
