Activision secures 'the most prominent single ad spot ever utilised' for games in the UK
The game might not hit retail for six months, but Activision is kick-starting the UK hype for Modern Warfare 2 today - with a premiere for the game during tonight's Champions League final.
The game, sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - one of the best-selling games of all time, arrives in November.
Activision and developer Infinity Ward has closely guarded many secrets surrounding the game's release, only drip feeding trailers out to consumers and the industry. First hints of the title were given in March at GDC with a recent follow-up trailer debuting earlier this month.
Tonight's promotion is the single most prominent single ad spot ever dedicated to a video game debut in the UK, according to Activision.
"Premiering the new Modern Warfare 2 trailer during such a high profile event presents a great opportunity to reach Infinity Ward’s fans and gamers throughout the UK,” explained David Tyler, Activision's UK marketing director.
“This promotional placement for Modern Warfare 2 is the most prominent single ad spot ever utilised by a video game to be revealed to the British public, and is indicative of the impact this title will have when it launches on November 10th.”

Publisher THQ has announced a brand new intellectual property – a first-person shooter called Homefront – to be shown at E3 next week.
The game has been developed by Kaos Studios and is set for release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
"Kaos Studios is using powerful narrative and environmental storytelling to create a plausible, near-futuristic setting where the people of a once mighty nation must fight to maintain their existence," commented Kevin Kraff, vice president of global brand management at THQ.
"This harsh backdrop will be the foundation for an emotionally-charged single-player campaign and an intense multiplayer experience."
Kaos Studios developed Frontlines: Fuel of War, and will be using NaturalMotion's Morpheme animation middleware for the title.

Rumours suggest that Microsoft could be about to announced a partnership with BSkyB for video content on the Xbox 360.
The exact nature of any deal is still unclear, but website Rapid TV News claims that the two companies have been seeking to cooperate for almost two years.
The site suggests that a full BSkyB service via a console is still some way off, but that Microsoft is still looking to make some content available in the near future.
Microsoft has a press event schedule for tomorrow entitled 'Experience the Vision', where the announcement is expected to be made. Microsoft already provides the technology for the BT Vision service, which is also due to be available via the Xbox 360.

Microsoft has confirmed plans for a "next generation" of hardware for its Zune portable media player, in the form of the much rumoured Zune HD.
Available only in the US, the new player will be launched this autumn and will include a built-in HD Radio receiver, HD video output, OLED touchscreen, Wi-Fi and an Internet browser.
Microsoft has still not announced plans to release any Zune hardware in Europe, but the brand name will become the "premium partner" on the Xbox Live Video Marketplace in both North America and Europe.
Users will have the chance to stream video content or download it, as either limited time rentals or lifetime ownership. Although the US is already well served by Netflix on Xbox Live, there is no equivalent service in Europe and the selection of video content much smaller as a result.
"The Zune experience is growing beyond a music player in the US. Zune’s international expansion starts with video on Xbox Live; eventually we’ll offer the full digital entertainment experience spanning screens, devices, platforms and geographies," said Chris Stephenson, general manager of consumer marketing for Microsoft's TV, video and music business.
"Delivering on Microsoft’s connected entertainment vision; this news marks a turning point for Zune as it brings cross-platform experiences and premium video content to living rooms around the world."

Rockstar and Take-Two have announced the next Grand Theft Auto IV expansion, The Ballad of Gay Tony, will be available digitally this autumn over Xbox Live. It will also be released bundled on a disc with the game's previous expansion for release through retail.
The expansion will be available in two formats - as a downloadable expansion that requires an original Grand Theft Auto IV disc, and as part of a retail disc titled Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City. This disc, according to Take-Two, will contain both The Ballad of Gay Tony and the game's previous expansion, The Lost and Damned, and will not require a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV to play.
"Liberty City is the most vibrant game world we've created yet. The episodic structure has allowed us to interweave stories, gameplay and atmosphere in a whole new way," said Rockstar Games founder Sam Houser. "The team at Rockstar North have yet again surpassed themselves, and made something that is both epic and very innovative. This episode's focus on high-end night life contrasts with the biker gangs portrayed in The Lost and Damned, whilst giving us a lot of new gameplay possibilities."
The Lost and Damned broke Xbox Live download records during its debut. In March, analyst Michael Pachter estimated that GTA IV's downloadable content will reach 2 million sales by the end of the year.

That's right folks, the Zune HD is real, and it's coming this Fall. Microsoft officially announced the next iteration in their Zune line today, making it less of a tripped out pipe dream, and more of a totally tubular reality. The specs, which look exactly like that leak we saw, go like this: 3.3-inch, 480 x 272 OLED capacitive touchscreen display, built-in HD Radio receiver, HD output (utilizing a new dock -- not on-board), and... not much more right now. Microsoft is doing away with the famed squircle in favor a full multitouch device, and they seemed to indicate that some new touch-friendly apps and games would be headed our way, though they were fairly mum when it came to details. The device will boast an IE-based, customized browser, but little else was said in the way of software.
Details are also scarce concerning storage capacities, CPU performance, and other crucial numbers, but it seems like they've got more in store come E3... and that's the next big piece of news. Zune integration is coming to the Xbox and Xbox Live, as the Zune marketplace will step in to replace the current Live video resources, expanding the library and offering all kinds of new perks, like Zune's first foray into international waters. According to the company, at E3 "attendees will see first-hand how Zune integrates into Xbox LIVE creating a game-changing entertainment experience" -- we're not entirely sure what the means right now, but it sounds sweet. Try to contain your excitement.

An update for the Xbox Live version of Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram is in the works. The patch includes online match viewing for everyone invited in your party lobby. Players and spectators can also chat with each other during the match.
The update also has some graphic tweaks.
Sega also tweaked the shadows which makes the mechs appear brighter. These updates are optional and players can toggle them with an options menu.
The Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram update doesn’t have a set release date, but it is being tested at Sega now. Afterwards it will be sent to Microsoft.
The VOOT blog also mentions the decision about the Xbox 360 twin sticks is coming the future.

Major video game magazine Famitsu published a list of recommended games as part of a “We Support Xbox 360″ ad campaign. Last year the titles would have been easy to pick since there was a heavy line up of RPGs like Tales of Vesperia and The Last Remnant. This year the Xbox 360 has a light selection of JRPGs.
Since Magnacarta 2 is the only (partially) Japanese developed RPG slated for release this year it’s on the list. The other games are: Bayonetta, Dream C Club, Time Leap, Memories Of 6: Next Relation, Tayutama: Kiss on my Deity, and Gears of War 2. The common thread between these titles and their genres is they have captivating characters.
About half the games on Famitsu’s list are visual novels. Not sure if this is a good sign since it shows niche Japanese developers are taking an interest in the Xbox 360 or if this is a bad sign since there isn’t anything else on the market for Famitsu to recommend.

While we’re finished sailing through the galaxy, Europe still doesn’t have Star Ocean: The Last Hope. PAL territories won’t see the game in stores until June 5, but they get two versions.
The Star Ocean: The Last Hope Limited Collector’s Edition comes with the game, a 32 page mini-guide, five character cards using “rare artwork not officially released in Europe”, a Star Ocean compilation soundtrack CD, and a limited edition box with digistack packing. The package has a suggested retail price of £54.99 ($87). A standalone game runs for £44.99 ($72). Most online retailers have a price break for both versions.
On closer inspection the “rare artwork” on the character cards is actually the anime style character designs Square Enix used in Japan. The digistack packing sounds kind of nice considering the US packing has three games stacked on top of each other.

Sega of America confirmed today that Aliens vs. Predator will be demonstrated during E3 2009. The company also reiterated that several titles it previously announced for the show would still be in attendance.
We eagerly await getting our hands on the "xenomorph vs. human vs. whatever the Predator species is called" title and are taking it as a good portent for the game's projected Xbox 360, PS3 and PC release in "early 2010."

If your house loses internet, or you're taking your 360 on the road, connecting to Xbox Live can be a hassle. Oh, unless you have a 3G phone and follow this handy guide!
It'll show you how to configure your phone, a laptop and your 360, then use them to commandeer an AT&T 3G signal and route it to your console, enabling you to connect to the service and even play games online. You won't get the best performance, it takes a little fiddling to get it running and apparently voids a warranty or two, but hey, some people are so desperate for this kind of thing that warnings will mean nothing.

New report claims to scoop Thursday announcement linking Microsoft console to satellite broadcaster
Microsoft is partnering its Xbox 360 with Sky TV for a new media sharing deal, according to a new report.
Claiming to reveal the details of an announcement Microsoft teased last week and which will be made this Thursday, trade publication Rapid TV News has this evening posted that "the long-awaited link up between BSkyB and Microsoft’s X-Box [sic] is at last going to happen".
No real clarification of what the deal entails has been given, but Rapid points to 2007 comments from BSkyB’s COO Mike Darcy about using Windows Media to stream the broadcaster's content as a new means of delivery.
Xbox 360 is compatible with Windows Media streaming functions - and its Video Marketplace is by all accounts proving popular (with even more content deals on the way, MCV understands). Microsoft is also keenly pushing a message around media convergence in the home, so this deal would fit the bill.
"Providing some sort of BSkyB functionality for Microsoft X-Box/360 users could potentially deliver millions more users in the UK and Ireland to BSkyB," points out Rapid TV.
Last week Microsoft said it would this Thursday make an announcement regarding "a very special partnership, sure to keep TV fans glued to Xbox LIVE".
Official details will be made public at an event on Thursday morning - MCV will be on hand to provide a full report.

EA has assaulted our inbox in the most extreme way possible, unloading some fresh screens from upcoming bro-love simulator, Army of Two: 40th Day. So, what can we say about these new screens? Well, they feature two dudes working together in a warzone, so it's a lot of the same stuff you've come to appreciate from the franchise, but there seems to be a kid involved this time around. Sadly, these screens lack the appropriate amounts of fist-bumping, but we're sure EA is saving the best stuff for last.

There are currently 13 million unique Xbox Live users playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, according to a new interview with Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling.
Speaking to Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb in his latest podcast, Bowling commented that: "Call of Duty 4 on Xbox Live just exploded. I mean right now we're at 13 million unique users on 360 and that's insane."
In January, Bowling put the online total for the Xbox 360 at 10,006,606 unique users, suggesting a considerable increase over the last few months - despite the game having been originally released in November 2007.
The number of PlayStation 3 unique users, which naturally were not mentioned on Hryb's show, were put at 4,381,276 unique users in January. With a significant percentage of users likely never to have played the game online, the game's overall unit sales make it one of the most successful titles of all time.
The first direct sequel to the game, to be known simply as Modern Warfare 2, is due for released on November 10. It is widely expected to be the best-selling game of the year, with Activision even voicing hopes that it will become the best-selling title of all time.

Lately, wild rumors have dominated the Zune conversation. But what about the regular old player? The one that actually exists? Look! Someone's talking about it: behold the utterly believable, utterly boring Zune Upgrade Plan, as reported and/or theorized by ZuneScene.
According to their sources, starting in June, current Zune owners will be able to "upgrade" to a current unit at a discounted price. Discounted by how much? This much:
As you can see, these are pretty deep cuts, and, if true, would be an awfully nice gesture to loyal Zune fans. The upgrade plan, should it actually happen, will need to be requested on the Zune support line, though you shouldn't call them to ask for it now any more than you should call their sales line to ask for a Zune Phone HD.

As promised, Activision has released a two-minute gameplay trailer for Modern Warfare 2, which is due out on 10th November.
Earlier in the month Game Informer reported details on the game's story and new co-op Special Forces mode, but this is our first chance to put those details in proper context.
The trailer, which appeared on US TV over the Memorial Day weekend, jumps back and forth between various scenarios, including an airport shootout, street battles, sunny Rio and an assault on a snowy mountaintop fortress.
There's also some underwater action, snowmobiles, a one-armed man and lots of flash cuts to other things that fans will no doubt mine for further hints about what's in store. Antagonist Makarov broods over the top about how "revenge is like a ghost", among other things.
Activision also released three screenshots showing a couple of scenes from the single-player campaign and - to judge by its placement in the recent Game Informer piece - our first glimpse of the Special Forces mode.
The latter mode is a selection of co-operative missions divorced from the usual difficulty curve, and the shot in question is the purply locker room effort. Infinity Ward has yet to say whether Special Forces will be playable online.
The developer is also keeping quiet about multiplayer in general, but it was such a huge part of the first Modern Warfare's success - not to mention Call of Duty: World at War's - that we'd expect to hear more sooner rather than later.
The full game is due out on 10th November for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Microsoft has said to expect three new games on Xbox Live Arcade tomorrow, including the first of the Wallace & Gromit episodes from Telltale Games.
Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures: Fright of the Bumblebees, which came out for PC in March, will go for 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60).
That's also what you will be asked to pay for Square Enix's Yosumin Live, a puzzle game about making rectangles out of gem blocks, and for the Hasbro Family Game Night version of Boggle, also out tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Microsoft and Capcom have cut the price of Bionic Commando Rearmed to 400 Microsoft Points (GBP 3.40 / EUR 4.80) for Xbox Live Gold members - a good deal, no question, but a bit stingy considering the price cut is for everyone on PlayStation 3.
