Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser has said "blood and gore and gruesomeness" are key to Red Dead Redemption and its portrayal of the Wild West.
"We didn't want it to feel like those old Saturday afternoon TV shows, matinee movie Westerns where people kind of get shot and crumble and die very quickly, very carefully off-camera," Houser told IGN. "We didn't want it to feel like Little House on the Prairie.
"I think there was a certain amount of blood and gore and gruesomeness [that] was vital for the game to have the weight that we wanted it to have. It's not generally something where we didn't think it was being gratuitous at all. We thought it was vital for it to properly depict these kind of characters and this kind of world, the violence had to feel slightly raw and unpleasant.
"You don't feel these are just people being shot and dying with dignity," he added. "They're not. They're being shot and they're dying scared and miserable like everyone else would die. And I think that's what we wanted to try and capture."
It's not just the violence of the late 1800s in the southern United States and northern Mexico that Houser wants to capture, but also the racial discrimination, although this will be handled tactfully
"We didn't fully represent era-appropriate racial attitudes because it's too unpleasant to deal with, but we touch on those issues," he said.
"Not tensions, just attitudes. Tensions we did want to include. Within our research, the language - not that we shy away from too much, and we didn't really shy away from it - people use to describe other races is insanely offensive to modern ears, and we hint at that but we maybe don't do it with quite the vibrancy that people use in some of our research.
"I mean some of the stuff you find is unbelievably simplistic and offensive," he added, "and we can hint at that and hint at these people's attitudes but we're not going to have them screaming these words at each other or displaying such complete ignorance. We have some characters like that but we tend to make them look somewhat ridiculous."
Similarly, there will be a "little bit of swearing" but also in a "period-appropriate way".
Red Dead Redemption, announced in February, follows the life of John Marston, a reformed bank robber and outlaw who tried to turn his life around but is coming to see that that is impossible, a bit like Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven.
Action will take place across three zones, and stories and missions will be handed out much like in GTA, although there will be less of them. "Our main goal with a game like this, or with any game, is giving the player freedom over what they do next," said Houser.
Some missions will feature "long rides" that Houser is trying to make as fun as possible, but which can be skipped via a mission checkpoint system if things go wrong and need redoing.
And like GTA, there will also be miscellaneous tasks to occupy explorers of the world, such as hunting around 40 types of animals to earn money and eventually an outfit.
"You get various rewards to your appearance once you reach the various tiers of achieving the various sets of things you can do one of which is hunting," said Houser, varying his choice of words.
Rockstar will be implementing a Wanted-like system in Red Dead Redemption where NPC characters will call out posses to hunt you down if you stand around discharging your six-shooter in public. Your fame goes up in tandem with your wanted level, apparently, and the world reacts to this.
Mini-games and side activities will be a central part of Red Dead Redemption, and include activities such as Five Finger Filet, drinking, card playing, fighting and running in a posse. Duels are in, too, but girlfriends and friends are out.
Character interaction and dialogue will be as important as ever, however.
"We love doing dialogue at Rockstar. We tend to put many, many multiples of tens of thousands of lines of dialogue into these games, and this one will be no exception," said Houser, who is aiming for a similar level or production value to GTA IV.
"A vast amount of pleasure in any game is just sitting and watching the world go by, and that's something that we've really tried to push in this world. In parts of the map where appropriate you'll see soldiers grab hold of people, just line them up along a wall and shoot them. So there'll be hopefully tons of that kind of stuff and you can sit and passively observe the world without you having to cause all the trouble."
Houser revealed that Red Dead Redemption will have "an interesting twist with the [endgame] compared to what we've done in the past" that will keep us playing after the story is finished and the 100 per cent completion status earned.
There's also going to be multiplayer, where players will be "charging around on horses and stagecoaches and trains". "It's pretty epic, but it's not finalised to talk about in any more detail than that," concluded Houser.
Red Dead Redemption will be out this autumn on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Mommy's Best Games has announced its latest game, Grapple Buggy, which mixes 2D driving and swinging around with a grappling hook on an uncharted planet.
Grapple Buggy is due out this holiday season - i.e. in time for Christmas - and developer Nathan Fouts told Eurogamer to expect "an unusual yet satisfying blend of exploratory driving, chest dropping swings, and mega-monster fighting action!"
Fouts, who used to work at Insomniac, is best known for his debut Xbox 360 Community Game, Weapon of Choice, and the follow-up shares that game's 2D perspective and colourful take on alien flora and fauna, as you can see in the screenshot gallery.
Players take control of Nova commander Javeya and her alien co-pilot Drozo, exploring the newly discovered planet VALD-END 317 in search of faster-than-light travel fuel called Vald, and one of several, story-driven game endings.
Judging by the first gameplay trailer, there's a fair amount of combat and platforming along the way, and we're told to expect collectable upgrades including new wheels, jumping abilities and additional grapple arms.

If shots from the barrel of Mr. Blurrycam just aren't legitimate enough for you, how's about corroboration from The Wall Street Journal? A breaking report has confirmed that Microsoft is indeed "developing a new videocamera for its Xbox 360 videogame console that will allow players to control games with the movement of their bodies," or at least that's the good word from the all-too-supposing "people familiar with the matter." It's noted that unlike Nintendo's Wii, the Microsoft camera won't require gamers to "hold any hardware in their hands to control in-game action," but in the same vein as The Big N, it seems as if the device will debut at E3 only to sit around in a lab for a year before shipping to consumers. Boo.

Fable II's second and latest DLC package, See the Future is now available for download on Xbox Live Marketplace.
"See the Future returns to the beloved world of Albion, where a set of cursed items from Murgo the Trader unleashes new challenges for players to overcome, including encounters with kooky ghost hobbes, bloodcurdling necromancers, a cursed knight and the Coliseum, where only the greatest heroes will emerge victorious to claim the ultimate prize," Lionhead explains.
In addition to new items, hairstyles and expressions, three new "alter egos" for your dog are also included; Dalmatian, Bloodhound and Husky.
It's (rather specifically) 560 Microsoft Points (£4.70).

As far as we can tell, there are two types of people who care about whether the North American version of Final Fantasy XIII has a Japanese voice track (in addition to an English one) -- RPG-loving hipsters who strive for complete, unwavering authenticity in everything they say and do, and ... well, people who speak Japanese and live in America, we suppose. Unfortunately for both these groups, it seems the Japanese voice track might only appear in the PS3 version of the highly anticipated Squeenidos title.
In a recent Q&A with IGN, FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase explained that without the kind of memory available on Blu-ray, there's simply not enough room on the 360 to implement two vocal tracks. He added, "Are there many people who would like to play with Japanese voices?" Well, gang? Are there?

Black Bean Games has told Eurogamer that Superstars V8 Racing will be out on 26th June, costing GBP 30 for PS3/360 and GBP 20 for PC. There's also a demo planned for June.
The first official screenshots were released last week, accompanying the scraps of information offered so far. This is often a worrying sign so close to launch.
"You are absolutely right, this does have the hallmarks of something worrying," a spokesperson for Black Bean games retorted. "It is, however, simply a case of this being the first game in a franchise from a smaller publisher known for bike racing, and we wanted to ensure we released quality assets we could honestly say were from the title."
Fabio Paglianti, senior producer for developer Milestone, added: "The game has very high quality, but the licence is not so famous. So we start with a mid-price so we can show to the audience we can do a very good game, a very beautiful game, to play, to see, to watch, with a good price. Because a mid-price game with that graphics, that content is a very good game for the audience."
Paglianti said Superstars V8 has around 80 per cent of the content of a full-price title like SBK, the motorbike racing series Milestone is noted for - although the studio's racing heritage goes right back to 1995 and Screamer on PC.
Superstars V8 will be a friendly simulation racer, according to senior producer Fabio Paglianti, that will be "easy to start" and feature racing aids that can be turned on and off. One of the special features is an Orbit mode, where races can be paused and a camera flown freely around to assess positioning.
The game is based on the real-life Superstars V8 championship, where well-known racers show what road cars are capable of around a track, a bit like Top Gear but less hairy, fat and obnoxious. "The hook for the audience is to see their own car [in action]," explained Paglianti.
Superstars V8 Racing has quick-race online multiplayer for up-to 12 players, who can be substituted for bots if needs be. This is Paglianti's favourite part of the game. "It's really, really fun," he said, "it's easy to play, it's aggressive."
The AI will be no push-over, either. "The AI have the same behaviour as the human," explained Paglianti, pointing out that different drivers have different skills as well as different cars.
"It's a very good game, but we have absolute faith that in the future we can improve Superstar a lot," said Paglianti, who would like a bigger championship mode and a racing school mode in the future.
He also said the real-life Superstars V8 event "can become a very interesting championship for the audience", and he hopes the game - via annual releases - can grow with it.
That's the benefit of a licence like this, he argued, although he isn't allowed to smash cars up more than mildly, front and back, and has no customisation. So is a licence more important than creative freedom?
"I don't think the limits a licence can have are so high," said Paglianti. "In our view the licence is, every time, a very good opportunity to give to the players a branded game that he or she already knows. "

Ubisoft has detailed the long list of changes made to FarCry 2 on 360 via a fairly hefty patch today.
Most notable is the fixing of an issue surrounding saved games becoming corrupted, although if you've already encountered the problem you won't be able to recover your data; you'll have to start again. Soz.
Ubi's also introduced a Hardcore mode that ups the damage on all weapons to more closely imitate real life - if you like games to be mental hard. Here's the full official lowdown:
Single Player
Fix some random crash occurring during specific Malaria attacks
Fix health damage not following the difficulty level when switching difficulty during player's walkthrough
Fix some camera issue when using a mortar near a rock
Reduce significantly the probability of having a corrupted save game*
Multiplayer
Add Respawning time in Host - Advanced options - player match
Add Starting rank in Host - Advanced options - player match
Add min players in the host option
Add deaths in scoreboard
Balance current damage model
Show VIP on Scoreboard (for your team only)
Players can stay on the same host for consecutive matches in Ranked match
Add a Quick match button when selecting a map in the Map community
Fix vehicles spawning on their initial position immediately after being destroyed by an explosion
Fix client being disconnected from the host randomly and not being able to see it after that
Fix death message does not appear randomly
Fix some issues when interacting with objects
Fix bandolier doesn't always unlock extra ammo
Fix some bug when healing another player and getting wounded at the same time
Fix diamond gain in rank mode
Fix players don't get a request to keep a map after playing on a IGE map
DLC Fix some issues when using the crossbow
Extra features
Add a "hardcore mode" that will provide a new damage model where all weapons do much more damage to increase realism.
Add the possibility to play Rank matches on a selection of user maps**
Many of the new features were requested by members of the community and we would like to thanks everyone for taking the time to communicate with us, we hope you will enjoy the improvements.
* We are very aware of the problems some people have been experiencing and have been doing everything within our powers to resolve these issues as quickly as possible. We found out during our testing that several elements could cause an issue with the same consequences and therefore prevent certain players to finish the game. We have been able to provide solutions that prevent those corruption problems in most cases and we haven't encountered any problems now. We apologize wholeheartedly for the inconvenience that this matter has caused to some owners of the game.
** In answer to a growing demand we have developed a tool that enable us to mark user's created maps as ranked. You should already find a selection of those maps thanks to some of our active community members.

Recent Microsoft Tweet hints at major Zune announcement next month
A recent Twitter posting from Microsoft’s Office 2010 account has sent the pre-E3 speculators into silly season with the hope that Microsoft could just maybe be preparing to unveil a new gaming-equipped Zune at E3 next month.
Engadget reports that the Office Twitter thread recently posted: “June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers. New product launch, that's all I'm allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre.”
The mention of Apple iPhone, combined with an E3-coinciding June announcement, has sent some outlets into overdrive, with predictions of a new Microsoft gaming handheld now aplenty.
However, with the announcement emerging from the Office Twitter feed, could everyone be getting excited about nothing more than new Office functionality for the MP3 player? Bear in mind, too, that both Apple and Palm are expected to announce new devices in June.
The Zune MP3 player has yet to be released in Europe.

You've heard of Chevrolet, right? You know -- that struggling automaker underneath the General Motors umbrella? For those who've long given up their ties to muscle cars in favor of the kid-friendly minivan or Earth-friendly hybrid, you may not even know that a revitalized Camaro is just around the bend. Based on some hands-on time with a production vehicle at an undisclosed dealer, Microsoft's Zune integrates perfectly into the sound system, and said integration is supposedly a standard feature on the car. What's more is that we're told some 27 other GM models will also include Zune support from the factory as they launch in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia through 2011, though details beyond that are scant. Hope they cooked in support for the Zune HD, ya dig?

Microsoft has a new twitter account in support of its Office 2010 product launch. What's strange though, is that the people behind the account seem to care more about the future of the Zune than Office. Two tweets (of five) from this account have caught our attention. The first says,
June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers.
Then as a followup to the barrage of questions received, @officethemovie adds,
New product launch, that's all I'm allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre.
Naturally, we're expecting the launch of the Zune HD and/or the unveiling of project Pink. Whatever happens, the month of June is going to be historic with Apple's WWDC scheduled to kick off on June 8th and the Palm Pre rumored for release on June 5th or June 7th.
Update: It's worth mentioning that the big E3 gaming expo kicks off on June 2nd (press events on the 1st) -- could be important if there's any truth to the new Zune HD supporting some form of Xbox game integration.

We released our original Xbox 360 RROD repair kit during Christmas 2008 - and after over 100,000 sales it has proved to be a superb success.
Of course there were still many consoles that it could not fix, and 360 modders were using an X-Clamp kit along with the Xecuter RROD kit to do a more robust repair. Naturally we wanted to make sure that our customers had the very best solution possible so we took the time to investigate the many many X-Clamp kits available and found that no two were the same, with many giving varying opinions and methods.
So we spent a week or so testing the ass out of many many different fix designs and after finding what we think is the absolute perfect solution we can now launch the Xecuter RROD PRO Repair Kit for the Xbox 360.
Not only have we included our specially formulated K-Pads for the memory chips, we have custom designed our own X-Clamp and have manufactured the bolts so that the length is the absolute precise length and thickness to offer the very very best solution.
We also include perfect sized washers and the best quality silicon paste to enable you to repair both the GPU & CPU all in one kit. All other tools are of course included.
As a test, we purchased exactley 100 RROD consoles from a games store and applied the fix to all of these. After bench testing for 7 days we have 87 consoles working perfectly with just the RROD Pro Fix, 6 others needed a DVD drive replacement and 7 could not be repaired at all - so were returned to M$ for replacements
We are very pleased with the results and believe this kit will be the definative repair kit available anywhere for the XBOX 360.

Activision's Call of Duty: World at War has spent half a year in the UK's top ten best-selling games chart.
The game was released on November 14 in the UK, and went on to take the number one spot in the charts and stay there for five consecutive weeks, narrowly missing out on the Christmas number one to EA's FIFA 09.
Downloads of the games DLC content – Map Pack 1 – have topped two million over PSN and Xbox Live, with a new set of DLC due next month.

Sega's given out a list of retro titles coming to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network this summer. PSN gets the short straw though, with only one being confirmed for Sony's online service.
Here's what Sega says about each:
Gunstar Heroes (XBLA/PSN) - The classic side scrolling shooter from the SEGA Mega Drive returns to captivate fans new and old with its non-stop action and cooperative play.
Altered Beast (XBLA) - "Rise from your Grave" as the original Mega Drive launch game is reborn and comes to a new generation of gamers. Fight hordes of undead warriors and monsters as you return to battle in order to save Zeus' daughter Athena.
Shinobi (arcade) (XBLA) - Battle your way through the "Ring of Five" as you save hostages with your ninja abilities.
Comix Zone (XBLA) - The game features an innovative art style that transports players directly into the panels of a comic as they fight their way to save a world from destruction as Sketch Turner. Everything from the speech bubble text, level design, and the revolutionary graphics scream COMIX!
Phantasy Star 2 (XBLA) - SEGA's classic RPG which expanded on the success of the first with its epic storyline and battle system.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (XBLA) - The game that introduced Knuckles the Echidna comes to a new generation of gamers as Sonic explores Angel Island and discovers the true power of the Master Emerald. Speed through each level at lightning speeds as either Sonic or Tails as you foil Dr. Eggman's in his new Death Egg station.
Sonic and Knuckles (XBLA) - Picking up where Sonic the Hedgehog 3 left off, players can now play as Knuckles for the first time. In addition, if players already have Sonic the Hedgehog 3 or Sonic 2 in their library, they will be able to access the lock-on bonus content for each game for the very first time since the days of the SEGA MEGA DRIVE!
New Features Include:
Re-worked for High-Definition
Online Leaderboards
Network Play (Excludes Phantasy Star II, Shinobi, Comix Zone)

It's been a while since the release of Hitman: Blood Money on PS2, PC and Xbox, which was quickly followed by a touch-up job on Xbox 360. But IO Interactive is now known to be working away on a brand new Hitman game. Hopefully for release this side of Christmas.
Speaking in a recent interview, Eidos 'life president' Ian Livingstone revealed, "It's being worked on, but there's been no announcement on the release date yet. We haven't even announced the game yet, so everything you hear about the next Hitman game is purely speculation at this point."
That'll be everything we hear except the fact that you just said it's being worked on then.
Livingstone only added that IO Interactive would again be developing the title. More on this at E3 hopefully
