Revealing FUEL's unique GPS system, which calculates routes through the game's diverse 5,000 square mile world on the fly, Codemasters has released the new 'GPS' gameplay video, now available to view and download from the game's all-new online destination at www.fuel-game.com.
With a succession of flowing arrows, that guide gamers from checkpoint to chequered flag, FUEL's elegant solution calculates routes dynamically and constantly updates according to vehicle position, in conjunction with a mini-map which pinpoints each racer's location.
However, in FUEL the suggested route is not always the quickest. As players master their vehicles they can take on riskier – and potentially more rewarding – shortcuts, veering off the suggested line. The GPS system can also be turned off for the ultimate man and machine versus Mother Nature challenge.
Gamers can view the video and find out more about FUEL by navigating their way to the newly launched, www.fuel-game.com. On the site, each of the game's 19 regions can be explored across an interactive map that enables players to zoom in and out of the largest racing environment ever. Information on the multi-class vehicle roster, extensive online options and different events can all be accessed. Visitors can also download the latest screens and videos and register to have the latest FUEL news and updates sent directly to their in-boxes.
Coming this May, FUEL is the ultimate racing sandbox where players can race and explore a stunning world, mapped from satellite data of the United States, in a range of on and off-road, two and four wheeled vehicles. Set in an alternate present where the accelerated effects of global warming have driven people from their homes, the huge, abandoned areas become a playground for a new breed of extreme racers.
A full day/night cycle and dynamic weather effects including snowstorms, thunderstorms, blizzards, rainstorms and tornados brings this world alive. Players take on hundreds of race events in a wide range of customised vehicles, including quads, bikes, roadsters, trucks, dragsters and more, that all share rewarding and exhilarating arcade handling.
With extensive multiplayer options including 16 player multi-class racing, online free-ride and a powerful yet intuitive race editor to share races with friends, FUEL is set to revolutionize open world multi-terrain racing when it launches on Tuesday, May 26th for the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games For Windows.

In a not totally surprising -- yet still kind of striking -- turn of events, Microsoft is reporting that its sales have fallen for the first time in 23 years. You read that right, 23 years. According to numbers that the company has just released, sales fell 6 percent year-over-year, while overall net income dropped a staggering 32 percent. Those numbers are significant, but what's more telling is where those losses are coming from. Namely? Netbooks. Apparently, in the midst of a global downturn consumers really are buying cheaper, especially when it comes to tech, which puts a fairly significant crunch on Redmond's bottom line. A CNN reports suggests that the presence of Linux on those devices has contributed to the hurt here, but it's more likely that the combo of a market still unwelcoming to Vista and the wide popularity of XP on the low-power systems has more to do with these dipping profit margins. Oh, and that general, awful market depression. Still, it should serve as some kind of wake up call to Microsoft that just being the biggest doesn't guarantee that the money will keep rolling in the way it has in years past -- clearly the big picture isn't as sharp as it's always been. Hey Windows 7 -- no pressure, right?

Most fighting games are pretty badass, but fighting games that feature giant robots? Overwhelmingly badass. Such was Virtual On, one of Sega's most beloved (and seemingly most quickly forgotten) franchises, where two anime-themed (and frequently Saturn-wearing) virtualroids duked it out in full 3-D and blew our minds with great graphics and a humbling dual-stick control scheme (push both forward to run ahead, apart to jump, together to crouch, etc.). With the game making its triumphant return to action on the Xbox 360, a Japanese gamer has created the above monstrosity by wedging a couple of candy packages onto the controller's analog sticks, then wiring up weapons buttons. With a little paint they'd almost pass for the arcade's controller, but we're not entirely sure that thin plastic would hold up to repeated deploys of Grys-vok's ICBM attack.

Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division is back in the red, after reporting it's first two profitable quarters ever last year.
The Xbox division (which is also comprised of Windows Mobile and Zune) fell from a profit of $106 million to a loss of $31 million, for the third quarter ended March 31, 2009.
Despite the drop Xbox 360 was the division's strong performer, with console sales up "almost 30 percent" to 1.7 million units, says MS.
Microsoft as a whole reported overall revenue of $13.65 billion, a six percent decline from the same period last year and the first year-on-year revenue fall in the firm's history.
Expectedly, the company put the hiccup down to the world recession, in an interview with The Guardian.
"We remain more cautious than most about the state of the world economy," said Microsoft's chief financial officer Chris Liddell. "While we'd all like to think the recovery will be soon and painless, we believe it will be slow and gradual."

A single-player demo for Volition's Red Faction: Guerrilla went out today on Xbox Live, giving players the opportunity to blow stuff up on Mars. As protagonist Alec Mason, you fight alongside the Red Faction contingent against the oppressive Earth Defense Force for control of the planet. Using a variety of weaponry and vehicles, you can blast apart nearly every man-made structure in the game world.
The download is 770.50 MB in size. As for its availability on the PlayStation Network, PS3 users will have to wait for an update later this afternoon, as Volition's site lists it for both XBL and PSN.
If you're interested in reading more on how to dismantle the world Volition created for this third-person action game, we recently posted a feature detailing how a number of the weapons available in the game work and how they're upgraded.

EA studio reveals game is built on same engine as traditional retail releases
Electronic Arts' Swedish studio DICE has this afternoon confirmed that its new game Battlefield 1943 will be sold for $15 when it launches later this year.
The game, one of EA's first download-only/digital distributed titles, is a sequel to DICE's famed Battlefield 1942 and is built with the same engine as more recent Battlefield titles.
It will be available for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC and will not be released as a boxed product.
EA and DICE are referring to the game as a 'premium download title'.

Atari has released the first set of changes for Xbox 360-exclusive driving game RACE Pro.
The title update - automatically downloaded from Xbox Live - fixes a slew of single- and multiplayer issues. Most of them are minor and technical bugs that make the list too long and boring to reproduce here. And we normally quite like lists - oh look, a train!
This update is a response to the requests of the community, apparently, which also explains why so much of it focuses on multiplayer.
If you're still pondering a RACE Pro investment, why not revisit our review and mull it over? You can probably add 0.0001 to the score now these fixes are in place.

We've always enjoyed SNK Playmore's long-running fighting franchise (the aptly named King of Fighters series), though we often find ourselves stuck with an inexplicable desire to see the series' adroit brawlers fly effortlessly through the air while shooting bullets out of their hands.
... No, you know what? We're not going to lie to you. We've never thought that. Nobody has, ever. Until now, that is -- Famitsu recently outed SNK's latest, and arguably most bizarre project ever: An Xbox Live Arcade shoot 'em up based in the KoF universe, tentatively titled King of Fighters Sky Stage. Based on the early screenshots we've seen, we're still trying to decide whether the game is going to be awesome or too awesome. Maybe you haven't heard: People. Flying. Shooting. Bullets. Out. Of. Hands.

Newly released today:
Death Smiles is a shooter that combines cute girls and a gothic horror environment. Windia is a normal 13 year old girl who warped into Gilbaland, a fairytale place that was not on the map. The beautiful and peaceful kingdom, however, was constantly at war with monsters and demons.
Since Windia and three other girls have been taken in by an elderly man who sold his services to the king for a living, to return the favour, the girls, using their newly acquired powers, flew into the sky to face off with the demons.
Cute characters, beautiful graphics and delicately drawn backgrounds, the game was a huge hit when it came out in the arcades. Take your arcade game home, published for Xbox360, the game retains its visuals excitement and gives you the comfort, or relief of playing the game in your own living room.

Ubisoft is adding to the H.A.W.X. fleet this week, bringing six new planes to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game that bears Tom Clancy's name via the downloadable European Assault Pack.
The new aircraft includes the Dassault Rafale, Saab-37 Viggen, Mirage 2000N, Mirage 4000, FB-22 prototype bomber and the experimental XA-20 Razorback from Tom Clancy's EndWar. Ubisoft also blew its DLC load a little early, showing off a hell of a lot more than it probably planned to.
In addition to releasing screen shots from the European Assault Pack, it also (we assume inadvertently) released screens from the "US Eagles" and "Russian Falcons" downloadable plane packs. Go ahead, look at all those screens. Even someone as ignorant to military aircraft as myself can tell there's more than just a half-dozen European fighters in here.

Microsoft’s Xbox Live is well established as one of the most successful digital download networks in the world and now a new release in the Community Games section of site hints at a possible app-related future for the service.
Developed by a user called MatthewM, the 1080p optimised Ping Time download is a clock based on arcade classic Pong.
The press release explains: “Created on a whim while half asleep one night, Ping Time transforms your Xbox 360 and TV into an expensive retro wall clock. Watch in awe as the two AI opponents bounce a ball back and forth endlessly (or until you quit, whichever comes first), carefully maintaining their score to represent the current time.
“Ping time boasts HD Black and White graphics, and the intriguing sound of silence, efficiently packed into less than 200 KB, making it currently the smallest product on Xbox Live Community Games.”
The arrival of the download throws up an interesting prospect for the Community Games portal, and it will be fascinating to see if similar non-game downloads appear over the coming months.
Ping Time costs just 200 Microsoft Points and is available to download now.

Disney's UK racing studio Black Rock reckons that its 2010 game Split/Second will help spark a turnaround for the driving game genre.
Speaking to Develop as part of a in-depth feature looking at the creation, production, and technology of the title, studio head Tony Beckwith and the game's director Nick Baynes both asserted their view that the racing genre is in an unhealthy state.
“If you look at the sales figures, the racing genre is in many respects dying out – take Mario Kart out of the equation and the category is in a dire way. I think this genre is ripe for something new and inventive to give it a kick start," said Beckwith.
The new 360, PS3 and PC game puts players in the role of a race car driver starring in a TV show who can trigger explosive special effects to eliminate racing competitors.
“We’re all fans of street racing here, but as a genre it is relatively stale – the evolution is only coming from how you customise cars, which can only serve to remove you from the action – I think Split/Second will do the opposite," added Baynes.
This approach stretches throughout the production through to the design - from things like technology to the on-screen design.
So the game features an almost HUD-less display, and asks players to pay attention to the environments they are driving through - rather than just racing lines.
Technical director David Jefferies said the production had been “a huge transfer of ideas, which is a little different from other productions where the different coding, art and design teams can be ghettoised and ordered to just shut up and get on with it.”
Baynes added: “If you look at screenshots of racing games, they all kind of look the same. [The minimal HUD is] another example of how we’re trying something different, and really want to reject a lot of the things that are established or expected of a racing game.”

Sometimes you can't beat the classics. The gentleman who brought his old NES Advantage to bear on his Xbox 360 is back, this time working his magic on the Super Advantage joystick. This bad boy is wireless, runs off an internal battery (charged via standard USB), and sports an LED player indicator. If you've never been able to get used to the standard Xbox controller, keep an eye out for this bad boy on eBay. The modster in question has stated his intention to let this one go to the right bidder, but not before he makes another one for himself. The next trick, he says, is to add cross-platform compatibility with the Wii and SNES. Video after the break.
