IGN took a microscope to yesterday's announcement and came up with some with some ideas on what to expect from Rockstar's latest GTA IV DLC episode. We already know about Tony's fall from financial grace in the main GTA IV campaign, so IGN surmises that this latest episode will focus on Tony's attempt to reclaim his lost riches through the exploits of his assistant, Luis.
When The Lost and The Damned released, it included updates to Liberty City's LCHC and Liberty Rock stations, and IGN expects the same to happen for K109, Electrochoc and The Vibe, which hold Liberty's club-dwelling populace's interest.
There's a good chance that The Ballad of Gay Tony will mostly take place in Algonquin, IGN writes. Considering that Lopez's Dominican friends operate out of Northern Algonquin, and Gay Tony's empire spanned most of the south eastern part of the island, it's a safe bet to assume Luis will be handling business in the area when the DLC releases this fall.

Format-holder trying to break records with number of simultaneous players on 360
Microsoft is trying to make history with a new 360 title, it seems - but developing a system that allows for 300,000 players simultaneously.
A job posting released by the firm has called for "an experienced server developer to help develop our server architecture. We are building an extremely high performance system to extend console games to the server in new ways; creating a completely new set of web services to support dynamic programming information of games and scheduling data".
That includes a new gameplay scheduler for Xbox Live - which presumably lets players agree times to meet online - and this new massively multiplayer game.
Requirements for the role include "building a backend capable of hosting a 300,000 player game in real-time with real money on the line (anti-cheating, etc)" the post ing says.
300,000 is a massive number of simultaneous players in real-time. Most MMOs use multiple servers to distribute their higher quantity of players. The only single-server game, EVE Online, has 300,00 players total - but only ever had over 50,000 playing in real-time at once.

Having struck up a very profitable Olympic-based partnership last year, Sega has turned on old rival Mario to take him on at his own game with the announcement of Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing.
The game, which is in development for Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii takes place in your typical assortment of colourful locations and features many of the Sonic and Sega universe’s favourite characters, including Tails, Dr. Eggman, AiAi (Super Monkey Ball) and Amigo (of Samba De fame).
Expect comic attacks, hidden short cuts and character-specific ‘All Star’ moves.
“Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is no ordinary racing game,” Sega Europe’s marketing director Gary Knight stated. “Its huge variety of characters and vehicles, plus the ability to play both online and off set it apart from other games of this type.
“The team have pushed the boundaries on what you would normally expect and created a different and unique party racing title whereby you really can’t take anything for granted.”
Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing will be released in early 2010.

That's right kids -- Ballmer himself whipped out the newly minted Zune HD for us during D7 and showed of a few of its finer features... including its ability to play a Pixar movie on its gorgeous OLED screen. Also of note, Steve off-handedly mentioned that the device would be shipping in a month, though we can't confirm that that's accurate. Anyhow, these pictures say far more than a thousand words, so just hit the gallery.
Update: Microsoft just pinged to let us know that the Zune HD is still set for a Fall release, not next month.

Xbox 360 console sales have exceeded 30 million worldwide, Microsoft has confirmed.
The number was reached after what MS is calling "the biggest year" in Xbox history - 2008 - which saw console growth swell up 28 percent.
The Xbox Live community has grown to more than 20 million active members, it says, making it "the world's largest global entertainment network", putting the online service in more homes than "any satellite television provider".
Before the end of the year, the number of Xbox Live members will surpass the number of subscribers to the largest cable provider, the company says. It's not afraid to boast this afternoon, is it?
In more stat news, over the course of this console generation US consumers have apparently spent $14.5 billion on Xbox 360 at retail and MS claims to hold the best game purchases per console with an average of 8.3 titles each.
Since the launch of the New Xbox Experience in November MS claims a 136 percent rise in new Xbox Live members, with purchase of game content up 70 percent.
"We've always been confident that Xbox 360 offers more entertainment value than any other console on the market, and these latest numbers show that consumers agree," said Xbox man Don Mattrick.
"We expect our growth to continue to accelerate. Our news at E3 next week will underscore our commitment to bringing blockbuster entertainment experiences to everyone and to growing the Xbox entertainment brand globally."

THQ and Company of Heroes developer Relic Entertainment have announced new title Space Marine, set in Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 sci-fi universe.
Relic has considerable experience with the license already, through the Dawn of War series of real-time strategy games. According to a preview by sister site Eurogamer.net the new title is an action role-playing game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but not PC.
The game will see players controlling as single space marine, with Relic staff describing it as "high action" and "RPG lite". The game is currently in the early stages of development, with THQ confirming only that it will not be released this year.
Although it shares the same name, the game is not the same project as the leaked footage seen online last September. Although the footage of what appeared to be a more straightforward action game was received positively by fans, the action title was being developed by THQ Studio Australia. It is unclear what the fate of that game might be and whether it will be repurposed for another title.

Disney Interactive has announced Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned, a new open-world action RPG in development at Turok dev, Propaganda Games. According to Disney, the game will take place before the events in the films, with "moral and character choices" promised that shape both the player's character and the game's world.
Beyond this, not much is known, though Armada of the Damned isn't scheduled to set sail until fall 2010 on both the PC and "next-generation" consoles. Still, after posting a considerable $45 million loss earlier this year, who can blame the company for diving back into its treasure chest for the few remaining doubloons left at the bottom.

The good news: Zune Video, the expanded version of the Zune Marketplace that combines the current Zune download shop and the Xbox Live Video Marketplace, is coming to Europe. The bad news: according to The Guardian, there won't be any Zune HDs on which to play the stuff bought with Zune Video. At least, there aren't any plans to release the device outside of the US yet.
The other bad news: In a correction at the top of the post, Keith Stuart clarifies that "the service coming to Xbox Live is Zune Video NOT Zune Marketplace. Music is not part of the Xbox Live offering." This is still wonderful for European Xbox 360 owners hoping for expanded video offerings -- but less great for those hoping for expanded music offerings, or those hoping for expanded Zune offerings.

Telltale's first episodic game for Xbox LIVE Arcade, Wallace & Gromit: Fright of the Bumblebees, releases worldwide today. The first of four episodes comprising Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures, the English language game is available for 800 Microsoft points and includes subtitles in German, French and Spanish.
Today's Xbox LIVE Arcade release brings Fright of the Bumblebees to the living room where players can enjoy the interactive experience in the same comfy environment as a Wallace & Gromit film. Since its first release on PC, Fright of the Bumblebees has been well very received, with acclaim from outlets including London's Sunday Times, which stated: "There's enough mechanical madness, gentle humour and, of course, ripe cheese to please the most ardent fans." IGN honored the episode with an Editor's Choice Award, saying, "Telltale nails the look and feel of a Wallace & Gromit short film."
In Fright of the Bumblebees, scatterbrained inventor Wallace and his crafty canine companion Gromit embark on a new honey enterprise, "From Bee to You." When demand out-steps supply, Wallace tries to boost his worker bees' production using a home-brewed growth formula—with comically disastrous results. Playing as both Wallace and Gromit, you must unravel the mess and restore order to the duo's quiet Northern England neighbourhood.
The next three episodes of Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures will launch on Xbox LIVE Arcade in the coming months. Telltale's acclaimed Sam & Max games are also coming soon to Xbox LIVE Arcade.
Telltale is also announcing that the PC versions of Fright of the Bumblebees and the second Wallace & Gromit episode, The Last Resort, are now available for individual purchase for $8.95 at http://www.telltalegames.com. These were previously only available in a $34.95 series bundle. As with Telltale's other series, customers who buy one Wallace & Gromit episode for PC will be able to upgrade to the full season for $26.

Several readers have written to mention that Microsoft has confirmed and unveiled the Zune HD. It has a "3.3-inch, 480 x 272 OLED capacitive touchscreen display, built-in HD Radio receiver, HD output," and it makes use of multi-touch input. More details will be forthcoming at E3, including how the device interacts with Xbox Live. Reader johnjaydk notes a PCWorld article that asks whether the Zune HD will be capable of competing with the iPod Touch. Quoting: "... the real competition between the Zune HD and the iPod Touch will come down to software. The new Zune will be based on a custom version of Windows CE, while the iPod Touch runs on the already popular iPhone platform, for which thousands of applications are available."

Today's newly announced The Ballad of Gay Tony episode for Grand Theft Auto IV was only half of Rockstar's GTA news. The other half could usher in a new approach to downloadable content.
Rockstar Games announced that the fall-slated The Ballad of Gay Tony and the February-released GTA IV episode The Lost and Damned will be released as a compilation disc for the Xbox 360 this fall.
The disc, entitled Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City, will retail for $39.99. Unlike the downloadable versions of each episode, the disc-based Episodes will not require a copy of the original Grand Theft Auto IV to play.
Requiring that players own the core game has been the tradition for post-release DLC of major console games. Rockstar's announcement today signals the first prominent experiment with a second approach, one that treats add-on content as a standalone expansion playable on its own.

Microsoft is to release a second boxed title in its Lips series later this year as the franchise continues to wrestle with console-karaoke king SingStar for home gaming supremacy.
Lips: Number One Hits will, unlike the business model employed by Sony, include all of the debut release’s tracks on the disc alongside a brand new selection of tunes “that have graced the No. 1 position on major global charts”.
Songs on offer include Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, MC Hammer’s U Can’t Touch this, Culture Club’s Karma Chameleon, Roy Orbison’s Pretty Woman and I Heard It Through The Grapevine by Marvin Gaye.
There’s no word yet on SKU availability, but seeing as Number One Hits will include all of the content from the first title there may well not be a standalone SKU to compliment the bundled with microphones pack.

Details might be a bit sketchy, but Microsoft has today confessed that, yes, it wants in on the handheld gaming market.
After years sitting on the sidelines – despite much speculation – and watching as first Nintendo, then Sony and lastly its bitter rival Apple all marked their territories in portable games, the format-holder has told Develop that its new Zune media player will also play substantial games content.
It just won’t admit to when that strategy will come into play just yet.
Today, Microsoft confirmed the introduction later this year of the Zune HD, the latest in its line of media players. The device is billed as ‘the first portable media player with built-in HD Radio receiver, HD video output capabilities, OLED touch screen, wi-fi and an internet browser’.
For now, the device is a US-only product due for release in the autumn. Zune HD’s existence was confirmed as part of a new strategy that will see the Zune Marketplace’s video content available via the home console Xbox 360 Marketplace to users in Europe and North America.
Chris Stephenson, GM of consumer marketing for the TV, Video and Music Business at Microsoft told Develop: “We are launching and today confirming a fourth device. It’s a hyper competitive product in the top end of the media player market."
