A Namco Bandai Europe community manager has withdrawn comments suggesting that Microsoft paid for Xbox 360 exclusivity on role-playing title Tales Of Vesperia, despite earlier claiming the opposite.
Junior community manager Charlotte Toci previously claimed via Facebook that Microsoft had paid to ensure that Tales Of Vesperia remained an Xbox 360 exclusive in the West and was not be released on the PlayStation 3 outside of Japan.
"Microsoft paid for the exclusivity the same way Sony paid for having Heavy Rain only on PS3," she originally said. "It's just one way the business works, sadly. Those decisions are made really high up y'know, we do try and give them the max of fan feedback, but sometimes it's just out of our hands."
Toci has now insisted she had no official information before making the statement and has retracted her claims.
"A few months ago I replied to a fan who asked me why Tales of Vesperia wasn't localised in Europe on my Facebook page. I replied that it was because of a Microsoft exclusivity, thinking that that was the reason why, even though I didn't have any official information on that," she claimed in a recent post.
"I was wrong to do so, and sadly my reply was relayed on many websites, thus sharing a false information to fans around the web."
"I would like to send my sincere apologies to all the Tales Series fans I have wrongly informed, and Microsoft and Namco Bandai for any damage that might have been caused with this."
Although lower profile exclusivity deals such as the one originally implied by Toci are still believed to take place within the industry they are rarely acknowledged by either publishers or console manufacturers.
Namco Bandai has not yet commented on why Tales Of Vesperia has not been released on PlayStation 3 in the West.

While Sony has dived right into 3D gaming with the PlayStation 3, Microsoft has been much more hesitant to dip its toes in the water.
Though a small handful of Xbox 360 games can be played in 3D if you have the necessary kit, it's not the same full 720p stereoscopic effect that Sony boasts with the PS3.
Speculation earlier this year pointed to an E3 announcement for additional 3D support, but that came and went without a peep. So what gives?
Well, Xbox senior product manager David Dennis told Eurogamer that Microsoft is still weighing up whether it's something consumers really crave.
"3D is an interesting space," he said.
"There was a big rush by some other folks in the industry to convince people they want to play in 3D. You can question the motivations of why they want to make everyone go buy a new TV perhaps, but I think 3D has to fit in a natural way where it fits with the gameplay.
"Something we're watching and wanting to understand from consumers is whether this is something they actually want.
"Does it add to the gaming experience? Does it distract from the gaming experience? Is it something they want to play long-term? Or is it something they try a few times and then go back to regular 2D modes?"
Despite clearly remaining sceptical, Dennis added that if it deemed the demand was there Microsoft will consider adding greater 3D support in the future.
"You watch the market penetration of 3D TVs, you look if it's something people are buying and you adapt and innovate, just like we've done by deploying different system updates and features. If there's other things we want to do with 3D because consumers are asking for we would explore it."

Here we go again. Another report today has claimed that Microsoft plans to reveal its next Xbox at E3 2012.
BGR reports that 'a source with knowledge of Microsoft's plans' has "confirmed" the firm's intent to reveal the next-generation console at the Los Angeles event next year.
It says the source is unaware of Microsoft's launch plans for the new machine, which has apparently been in development since 2006, and no further details were divulged.
This backs up the claims of a report earlier this month which also pinned the new Xbox for an E3 2012 reveal, citing an inside source at Crytek, who later dismissed the rumour along with the notion it has development hardware for the new console already.
Microsoft has also recently stated its view that Xbox 360 is only halfway through its lifecycle. But MS isn't the only target of next-gen rumours; a report today has claimed Sony will reveal the PlayStation 4 within 18 months, citing "industry sources at a top developer".

[Ryan Challinor] is part of a group constructing a display for this year’s Burning Man festival that includes the Kinect, Ableton Live, and Quartz Composer. As the programming guru of the project, he was tasked with creating a method for his partners to utilize all three products via an easy to use interface.
His application is called Synapse and was inspired by videos he saw online of people controlling individual Dubstep beats or sound effects with the Kinect. Synapse allows you to map multiple effects to each limb, sending joint positions, hit events, and image depth data to both Ableton and Quartz Composer via OSC. The user interface looks fairly easy to work with, enabling musicians and artists to create awesome audio/visual displays using their bodies as instruments, in a very short period of time.
Check out the pair of videos below to see a brief walkthrough of the software interface as well as a quick video demonstration of what Synapse is capable of.

Says discussions with platform holders are ongoing
Cloud gaming platform OnLive has had discussions with representatives of both Sony and Microsoft over a possible console collaboration for the service.
OnLive already has some major publishing partners as well as agreements with key ISPs. Any possible tie-up with either Xbox 360 or PS3, however, would be its most significant development yet.
"Our controller is a hybrid between a PS3 controller and an Xbox controller. It's all compatible, it would just work," OnLive's VP of engineering Joe Bentley told CVG.
"There are OnLive guys chatting [Sony and MS], but we'll see where it goes. But it would absolutely work, we're ready to work with everybody.
"What people are realising and waking up to is everything could be a console, why shouldn't you be able to take your game everywhere. I think the timing of this is perfect. When I joined the company I didn't think it was going to pan out this way."

O'Shea's projects include Kinect air guitar and a live interactive storybook for kids.
Attendees will experience the melding of video games and contemporary interactive art from a unique and intimate perspective, GameCityNights promised.
Director Iain Simons said: "Games are art. You know it, I know it even Roger Ebert knows it - he's just teasing for attention. So, having settled this once and for all I'm looking forward to spending an evening with some brilliant, creative people - and that's just the audience."
GameCityNights run on the last Thursday of every month at Antenna in Nottingham, Beck Street, NG1 1EQ. Head over to the official website for ticket details.

A report has claimed that Microsoft is preparing to allow free-to-play games to come to the Xbox LIVE service, incorporating microtransactions funded by Microsoft Points.
The Develop report cites anonymous sources, and claims that the publisher is already speaking to developers in an attempt to secure free-to-play titles for the service.
Both in-game purchases and upgrade models are believed to be on their way, despite LIVE's many years as a closed system - a policy which has so far meant that no MMO or free-to-play games have been supported by Microsoft's online facility. A change to that policy may be welcomed by gamers, but the effects of a free-to-play presence on XBLA's economy are uncertain.
Currently, developers are unable to set their own price brackets for Microsoft Points, instead having to choose from pre-establish bands. Whilst a continuation of that scheme is a possibility, developers would surely embrace more flexibility to the system.
The story follows several developments in the past few weeks which could have influenced a decision, including Sony securing CCP's Dust 514 as a PSN exclusive, partly due to it's more open platform but largely because of the option to make the game free-to-play.
The announcement of Kinect-enabled NUads earlier this week also offers Microsoft a tempting new revenue stream, which could potentially be used to support free-to-play titles.
Just last night, Valve announced that 92 per cent Metacritic rated shooter Team Fortress 2 would become free-to-play after four years on the market as a traditional retail product. That game is already available on Xbox 360 via the Orange box.

Irrational's creative director Ken Levine has expressed concern over integrating motion control into more traditional gameplay mechanics.
Following the E3 announcement that BioShock Infinite will support PlayStation Move, Levine spoke to OXM about ensuring the safety of tried and tested methods, even when adding new control schemes.
"Any experience that sits in the realm of motion play needs to be kept separate from the main experience," he explained. "It needs to be firewalled off so that if this experiment isn't for you, or doesn't turn out to be all that great, you just ignore it. Any new experience we add, we need to be able to protect this experience."
But he was also adamant about the need to evolve. "If we don't experiment, we don't progress."
Levine also spoke about Bioware's planned use of Kinect in it's epic space RPG. "I like the stuff they're doing with Mass Effect 3, in terms of making some of the interface aspects a little less thorny - more the squad commands than the conversation, as that's a bit of a challenge on the controller."
He did admit that, personally, he's a fan of more traditional methods. "I'm a hardcore gamer - I do most of my gaming on mouse and keyboard. I'm always open to new things, but I'm a really conservative guy at heart. I'll try it out slowly, but I'll be doing so very conservatively."
Bioshock Infinite is due for release in 2012.

The folks over at Microsoft Advertising are quite fond of their latest brainchild, so much so that they're calling the Kinect-enabled advertising platform "irresistibly interactive." NUAds -- which snaked the NU in NUI -- feeds off our need for interactivity, allowing advertisers to lure us in by enabling points of gesture and voice control. Think the latest Snuggie spot is super cool? Just say "Xbox, Tweet," and all your friends will know it. Want to know more about Mariah Carey's latest fragrance? Say "Xbox, More," and the info is all yours. Wondering where you can pick up a box of Nad's edible hair remover? Say "Xbox, Near Me," and you'll get a text with the location of the closest Nad's retailer. Want to vote on the hottest new Bratz doll? Give your girl a thumbs up. So Microsoft may have engaged a host of more respectable partners, namely Adidas, NBC, and Coca Cola, for its demo of the voice and gesture-enabled advertising platform yesterday, and NUAds does indeed serve up promotions in an entirely new way, but will it really change how we view the boob tube for good?

Wired has a fascinating (if a little long) read up about how Microsoft's Kinect hardware is changing the robotics industry. For a long time, robotics has been held back, not by technology that defines how robots move, but by a lack of understanding of their environments -- a robot that can't "see" or recognize its surroundings won't have any idea where to go. Most solutions to this problem were too expensive or unwieldy to use in a lot of robotics applications.
But the Kinect has made that much easier, providing what's basically a sub-$500 kit that can recognize humans, their movements and almost any other objects around the room. And while Kinect hacks first began as a push by unofficial open source engineers, Microsoft has more or less made that kind of stuff official, both by providing developer kits for programmers and by supporting community mods.
So let it be known: Just a few years from now, when Skynet is chasing you down after capturing your loved ones to work in the slave camps, it'll be thanks to Kinect that those robots can see and hunt you while moving across the post-apocalyptic wasteland.

As rumoured earlier this month, Microsoft is about to give marketers a new set of tools to create Kinect-friendly interactive advertisements.
According to The New York Times, the features, dubbed NUads, are due to be formally unveiled today at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
Should you feel the need, you'll be able to post messages about an ad to your Twitter feed by bellowing "Xbox Tweet" at your Kinect unit.
If you want to find out more about a product being thrust in your face, shout "Xbox More" and you'll duly receive an email filled with product info.
If it's a TV show being promoted, you can yell "Xbox Schedule" and you'll receive a text message reminding you when the programme airs. Or if it's a specific product, saying "Xbox Near Me" will give you a map showing the nearest store to your location that the item is being sold.
Finally, advertisers will be able to ask users to vote in polls by asking you to wave your hands in front of the Kinect camera to select, say, your favorite pizza topping.
You'll apparently be seeing all this stuff on your 360 from Spring 2012.
"When you have highly interactive people and a passive medium, they are interacting with their phone or their laptop while watching TV," explained Microsoft ad boss Mark Kroese. NUads, he argued, "create a natural way for the user to engage with the TV."
Potential clients seem impressed. Saatchi & Saatchi communications director commented, "The new ad units really epitomized the level of engagement that everyone is working towards. You can text, you can tweet, you can vote. That's phenomenal."
First person to post a link to that Bill Hicks bit wins a cookie.
