Microsoft hopes to boost Kinect sales in Japan with games that are familiar to Japanese players.
Microsoft's Japanese Xbox 360 General Manager Takashi Sensui admitted today in a press conference (reported by Andriasang) that the motion-sensing Xbox 360 add-on, which has sold 10 million units globally since its November 2010 launch, did not sell to expectations in the Japanese market.
He hopes to give the device a new push this year with IPs that are familiar to Japanese players, along with titles that appeal to core gamers.
At the Tokyo Game Show last year Microsoft announced a number of Japanese-made Xbox 360 exclusives, some of which support Kinect.
These include Codename D, Haunt, Project Draco, Rise of Nightmares and Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor.
The Xbox 360 has suffered a difficult time in Japan. Last month Microsoft announced it had finally managed to shift 1.5 million Xbox 360 units in the country. It launched there in December 2005.
Xbox 360 hit the million mark in Japan in March 2009, after three years and three months on shop shelves. The extra 500,000 sales took another two years and three months to notch up.

An article at the Opposable Thumbs blog examines the Xbox Live Indie Games economy, finding that developers are having trouble making enough money to justify continued work with the platform. Quoting:
"If you want to publish a console video game, there's no easier route than the Xbox Live Indie Games program. But while it's relatively easy to get your game on the service, it's hard to get it noticed. There's a lot of junk on XBLIG, so much so that a group of developers banded together at the end of last year to promote quality indie titles. There have been success stories—like the recently released FortressCraft, which managed to sell 16,000 units on the day of release—but they're not exactly common. So with virtually no promotion, and with average earnings of just $3,800 per title, why do developers continue to create games for the platform? ...virtually all of the developers we spoke to are considering moving on from the platform. But all seem to view their experience as valuable, which in the end is part of the point of XBLIG: it's a place where virtually anyone can make a game that can be played on a console. Devs just need to know what they're getting into."

Researchers from Cornell have used AI to create a system based on the Kinect that can recognize what you are doing — cleaning your teeth, cooking, writing on a whiteboard etc. In a smart home it could be used to offer help: 'Would you like some help with that recipe, Dave?' Or it could monitor patients or workers to make sure they are doing what they are told. The study also reveals that there is probably enough information in how activities are performed to recognize an individual — so providing yet more biometrics. There are clearly a lot more things that we can teach the Kinect to do with machine learning than just gesture recognition.

In a recent interview Microsoft Game Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer has revealed that the two companies spoke about Crytek going first-party.
"The first time we met with [Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli] and the team was around seven or eight years ago, and we started talking about what it’d mean for them to become first-party," Spencer told OXM.
"And it was a process of what do you guys want to do, what’s unique for us, and they were just going to do Crysis, and they’d just come out of Far Cry, and we said we’ve probably got enough military future shooters, so go do that."
He also spoke about Kinect, and said that Crytek was excited by the motion control technology. Crytek has been using it for Ryse, a hack and slash game set in ancient Rome that’s also a Microsoft exclusive.
"Then they came up with this idea around Ryse, and now they’ve really fallen in love with Kinect, and it’s a perfect marriage for us."
Recently Crytek denied rumours that it was already working with Microsoft’s next, unannounced console.

It seems like the folks over at the Flying Machine Arena are finally starting to catch on -- those quadrocopters are going to kill us all. Thankfully, after teaching them to juggle and tap out some tunes, the researchers came to their senses and put the flying machines on a Kinect-controlled leash. Instead of flitting about autonomously, the four-rotored nightmares are directed by a puppeteer waving his hands. Movement is controlled by the right hand, while raising the left one tells the copter to do a little flip for its master's amusement, and a commanding clap makes it sit down like a good little pup. Best of all, if you don't give it any arm-waving instruction it just hovers and waits until you tell it otherwise. On further consideration, maybe we haven't been creating our own murderers, but a new man's best friend -- after all, they don't eat much and can't chew up your remotes.

Hard to believe that Microsoft's been offering consumers the ability to customize their Zune purchases for the better part of four years now, but as they say, all unbelievable things must one day face reality. Er, something to that effect. Without so much as a heads-up, the designers in Redmond have apparently decided to shutter the Zune Originals storefront. As of this weekend, no new orders for highly personalized Zunes are being taken, with interested Earthlings encouraged to throw creativity to the wind and opt for a mass produced alternative within Best Buy or Walmart. So, you're looking at two tidbits of import: if you placed your Originals order at 5PM PT on July 1st, you likely have quite the coveted device headed your way, and if you ever needed evidence that Microsoft was making WP7 its next Zune, well... you're welcome.

Youtube user [programming4fun] got a Kinect for father’s day and with just a little bit of code, came up with a 3D display using only a Kinect. Instead of the usual Kinect hacks like computer vision or playing Mario, we think the ‘Holographic display’ for the Kinect is one of the most useful implementations of the Kinect we’ve seen.
The build uses the Kinect SDK. The end result is a lot like the Kinect snowglobe we covered earlier, only instead of custom acrylic domes and a projector, this build enables pseudo-3D on any display. The hack works by having the Kinect track the users head. From that, it’s pretty simple to display a projection of a 3D model.
The system only supports a 3D display for one person, although with shutter glasses, that could be could be doubled. [programming4fun] says he’s thinking about adding anaglyph 3D – while the effect on video is pretty amazing, he says it’s not entirely convincing in real life.
We talked to the extremely modest [programming4fun], and he says the build isn’t technologically impressive at all. We’d disagree with that assessment because interfaces requiring movement have been around since 1963 and they still haven’t caught on for a wide audience. While there have been a few motion controlled devices that have worked well, most of them have been pretty bad. The Kinect 3D display seems like it would have some utility with a Microsoft Surface type device.
[programming4fun] says if there’s enough interest he might be convinced to clean up his code and create an installer. Check out the video after the break.

Microsoft announced today that on July 11th, their Games for Windows marketplace will be merging with its console equivalent. According to a spokesman,
"All of the same content from GamesForWindows.com will be available on Xbox.com so members of communities across Xbox 360 and Games for Windows can purchase and get details on their favorite games, all in one place. It's not just Apple's App Store striding past milestones today, Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace has also rounded a notable marker in its development. Specifically, it's now reported to have passed 25,000 apps by one site tracking comings and goings within it, though that figure's up for debate as the other WP7 apps tracker still lists the total at just under 25k. The main point is that the WP7 ecosystem is growing, and faster than previously at that -- it took until the end of March to accrue 11,500 apps, a span of five months from its launch, whereas the last 13.5k have come in the brisker period of three months. Provided this acceleration continues, and there's no reason to expect it'll slow down with Mango on the horizon, Microsoft's mobile OS reboot promises to be in pretty competitive shape in time for its first anniversary -- a notable feat considering how far behind WinMo had fallen. Perhaps RIM can use this as an instructive example?

In Belfast a High Court judge has ordered a 13 year old to surrender his Xbox to the authorities. The boy was charged with a series of robberies and in the bail application the judge asked the boy what he owned that meant a lot to him. The teenager said it was his Xbox games system. The judge told the youth that the surrender of the Xbox would show him what it was like to have something he really valued taken from him.

As rumoured earlier this month, Microsoft has confirmed that its Kinect peripheral is more accurate now than it was at launch.
Xbox senior product manager David Dennis told Eurogamer that some of the software shown off during its E3 show demonstrated the improvements it has made to the add-on.
"Yeah," he said. "I think like we showed at E3, like Kudo showed with Kinect Fun Labs – a lot of that tech is the advancements we've made in the accuracy, the tracking... being able to show finger tracking in the sparkles demo he did.
"You saw too with Ubisoft's gunsmith demo [for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier] he was using his hand to fire in the firing range mode. I think that's the kind of thing we're going to continue to iterate on."
Although he wouldn't offer specifics, Dennis insisted that Microsoft aims to continue to update both Kinect and the 360 itself in the coming months and years.
"That's the beauty of Xbox. We've been doing that with Xbox 360, starting three or four years ago - continuing to deploy new software updates to improve the functionality, like enabling finger tracking and voice search, and also to bring new partners like Netflix on.
"These [updates] are very deliberate and planned and programmed," he added. "There are already people working on things for next year and the year after inside our secret bunkers, and we'll continue to bring amazing stuff that consumers love."

Core gamers left cold by Microsoft's Kinect-heavy E3 presentation will come around eventually, the platform holder believes.
When Eurogamer asked Xbox senior product manager David Dennis if it was disappointed at the mixed response to its press conference earlier this month, he insisted naysayers may well change their minds once they get a chance to try out the titles it showcased.
"I think it was as we expected," he explained.
"We showed amazing core game experiences and we showed great Kinect experiences. Both social/casual Kinect experiences as well as stuff like Rise of Nightmares and Ryse which we think are certainly going to appeal to the core.”
Dennis then likened the response to Microsoft's 2010 show where, he argued, critics scornful of its Kinect reveal were ultimately won over when the device eventually hit the shelves.
"It's similar to last year where some of the core gaming media walked out of E3 a little sceptical about Kinect and said 'I'm never going to do that'. But a lot of them also went and bought Kinect and said 'Oh my god, I love it, I break it out when I'm having a party, I play with my girlfriend, finally I can play with my kids.'
"I think people have embraced Kinect and we think that a lot of what we showed at E3... whether people fully understand it now, as we open up more and more over time and explain and let people get hands-on, we think people are going to love it."
Microsoft used its E3 presser this year to show-off a bevy of new Kinect titles, including Kinect Sports 2, Kinect Fun Labs, Ryse, Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster, Disney Adventures and Star Wars Kinect, alongside a sprinkling of more traditional 360 fare, such as the Halo: Combat Evolved remake, Gears of War 3, Tomb Raider and Mass Effect 3.

The NPD Group has released a set of charts highlighting sales in various video game categories over the last few years. Of particular interest is a graph representing online-capable sales between 2006 and 2010. The Xbox 360 leads in the category, with online-capable game sales consistently doubling that of PlayStation 3 since 2008. The Wii reached roughly half of the PS3's online-capable sales in 2008, though that number declined through 2010.
When it comes to points cards used to purchase games and downloadable content online, the Xbox 360 trounces the competition with sales growing steadily every year. Sales of Sony's PSN cards seem to be on the rise, however, while Wii Point card sales have remained relatively flat.

Calibur11 has announced the coming arrival of its custom Xbox 360 Gears of War 3 "Bleed Out" vault. Pictured above, the vault features a controller cradle, grim graphics and an illuminated "Crimson Omen" icon. The icon will actually interact with Gears of War 3, glowing red whenever players are downed within the game (to which you should be paying more attention).
Presumably to convince people that it's a good idea to encase their Xbox 360 in plastic, each vault will also include a chance to win a life-size suit of COG armor (pictured here). Retailing for $90, the vault will be available when Gears of War 3 launches later this year.
