Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary's Kinect functionality isn't going to be something to write home about, if comments from 343 Industries franchise development director Frank O'Connor are anything to go by.
"I don't think it's going to be something that people need to be hyper-excited about," he told OXM. "It'll be cool, but it's not something you'd put on the front of the box.
"I don't want to downplay it," he added, "but I think of it like this - I use voice on Netflix and it's awesome, and that's what this'll be. Something that enhances you overall experience."
O'Connor also reiterated that Kinect support won't "in any way, affect the core gameplay".

If you've been thinking of changing your Xbox Live Gamertag now is the time to do it.
The latest XBL deal of the week offer enables Gold subscription members to alter their online handle for 560 Microsoft Points (about £4.80), representing a 30 percent saving on the regular price.
You can change it via the Gamertag option in the My Xbox section of the console's dashboard. There's no need to tell your friends either as their friends list will automatically update with your new name.
Microsoft told CVG last week that Xbox Live's last 12 months were its biggest ever in terms of recruiting new members to the service.

Update: EA Sports has explained to Eurogamer why the EA Sports Season Ticket is only available on Xbox 360 in Europe.
"While we have not reached an agreement for the program with Sony Europe," EA said, "we're pleased to be able to offer EA Sports Season Ticket for both PS3 and Xbox 360 in North America and Xbox 360 in Europe."
Original story: The vision EA Sports vice president Andrew Wilson presented to Eurogamer of a paid subscription service has come true - EA Sports Season Ticket has launched.
For an annual fee of $24.99 or 2000 Microsoft Points, you'll get early access to EA Sports games, discounted DLC, premium web content and membership recognition.
You can subscribe through Xbox Live today. EA Sports Season Ticket is available on PS3 in North America only.
On Xbox 360, download and launch the EA Sports application and "follow the prompts" to take part. On PS3, search for EA Sports Season Ticket. The first EA game to support the Season Ticket will be Madden NFL 12, which launches this month.
Future Season Ticket games include FIFA, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, NHL Hockey and NCAA Football.
Season Ticket holders get access to EA Sports games three days before release via digital distribution. Once the game hits shop shelves, the digital version will disappear and you'll have to go to a shop and buy the title. All your Achievements and Trophies carry over, and you'll have had a crucial head start on the competition.
The small print: "Digital download is available at 6pm EST four days before launch to ensure subscribers get a full three days to play following the download time. The digital version will time out when the product is available at retail."
All DLC will be knocked down 20 per cent for Season Ticket holders.
All EA Sports games will pack 'premium web content' that Season Ticket holders get for free. This will begin with the Creation Center packs for FIFA 12. These offer better customisation tools with which to build teams and tournaments.
Season Ticket holders will also stand out by brandishing a special and exclusive badge on EA Sports profiles and in game.

What's in a logo? These days, it's everything -- it's one of the most recognizable symbols a company can have, and it appears Microsoft isn't taking its emblems lightly. Over the course of the past week we've noticed an interesting trend: the Windows Phone branding has shed the circle-based icon in exchange for a square-shaped variant, appropriately reflecting the platform's "tile" look and minimalist theme. We first thought this was a fluke when we peered at the new logo at Fujitsu's IS12T event last week, as though it were a localized version made for Japan; as it turns out, however, this is indeed an official change across the board. If you need more proof than the source link below, yesterday's press invite for Nokia's Gamescom party features the new squared variant as well. We're still holding out for a green robot-shaped logo, but this will have to do for now.

Among the dozen or so games strewn about New York City's Museum of Modern Art (during last week's Kill Screen-curated "Arcade" event) two titles had their playable debuts: Eric Zimmerman and Nathalie Pozzi's "Starry Heavens" ("a physical game of power and betrayal"), as well as Matt Boch and Ryan Challinor's "Pxl Pushr" ("something akin to a full-bodied theremin blended with a puzzle game"). Considering what the two freshman entries were up against -- critically acclaimed games like Limbo, Canabalt, and Echochrome -- it was impressive that both games had lengthy lines throughout the evening.
I mean no offense when I say this, but Pxl Pusher looks like what would've happened if Kinect technology had existed in the Coleco Vision days. In the same way that your Dad's sweet 1973 Lacoste track jacket still looks totally rad, so does Pxl Pushr. The bizarre look is both a measure of the dev duo's style -- their day jobs are as designers at Harmonix -- and of the short-term development cycle. "Over the past four weeks-ish we've been messing around building this game," Boch explained.
In Pxl Pushr, one player places dots on an iPad, while another player attempts to catch as many dots as possible by using the contortions of their body (via Kinect). The player contorting their body is scored on how many pixels he/she is able to "push" versus the ones they miss. It's a simple concept for sure, but one that had many attendees smiling while making very silly poses. Not that the crowd's reaction was foreign to Boch and Challinor, two gentlemen who spend their working hours with Dance Central 2.

Free-to-play games supported by micro-transactions on Xbox 360 are "inevitable", according to one developer.
Hi-Rez Studios boss Todd Harris, who is making free-to-play game Tribes: Ascend for PC and Xbox 360, told Eurogamer Microsoft plans to relax its rules regarding Xbox Live because of industry trends.
Last month a Develop report revealed Microsoft was talking with developers to discuss free-to-play game deals.
The idea is that games can either be monetised by in-game items or premium upgrade costs. Xbox 360 will incorporate a micro-transactions service using Microsoft Points, the report claimed.
As of now, the Xbox 360 version of Tribes: Ascend is on the back burner until Microsoft sorts its free-to-play Xbox Live policy out.
Discussions revolve around how free-to-play games will be updated through Xbox Live and how gamers will be able to play without spending any money.
"It's really just the degree to which the free-to-play model and, even more specifically, constant updates are at - kind of what level of support there is for Xbox, or even PlayStation at this point," Harris explained.
"So the ability to patch frequently, the ability to have it be free-to-play so users can get a taste without any fee. At least from our conversations, both Sony and Microsoft are moving there strategically but there are still some things to be worked out on both the business side and the technical side and the certification side regarding frequency of patches.
"And those issues just need further advancement before we would be comfortable putting a release timeframe on a console version. It's not the case of 'never', but we know all those things we can handle on the PC, so that's why PC is first."
Xbox Live has so far been a closed system, preventing massively multiplayer games, for example, from finding a home on the service.
Final Fantasy XIV Online creator and director Hiromichi Tanaka told Eurogamer last year that a "closed" Xbox Live blocked the game from appearing on Xbox 360.
And PlayStation 3 exclusive MMO shooter Dust 514 is in a similar situation. Developer CCP told Eurogamer at E3 last month that it went with Sony because "at least they have policies that allow us to build the game the way we want".
"They're [Microsoft] seeing where the industry is going," Harris continued. "It's inevitable that Microsoft will move towards that because the industry is moving towards that, and once that groundwork has been laid we would be in a better position to consider Tribes: Ascend for Xbox."
Eurogamer put the free-to-play on Xbox 360 story to Xbox senior product manager David Dennis, who told us Microsoft is looking at "a lot of different models for distribution".
"We're always looking at different models and different ways we can work with partners to bring content out," Dennis said.
"If you look, for example, at the stuff Kudo [Tsunoda, Kinect creative director] showed onstage at E3 – Kinect Fun Labs – that's an ad-supported model. Those titles are sponsored. There are different ways you can deploy or distribute games using different types of business models and we're always open to talking to partners.
"The strength we have in the business right now and the momentum we have allows us to experiment and try different things like that and see what consumers like and what they don't like," Dennis continued.
"If there are experiences that they like and want to download because it's ad-supported versus what are they willing to pay for it… you'll see us continue in the future to look for a lot of different models for distribution like that."

Today’s issue of UK national newspaper The Sun leads with a story that has no doubt caused headaches at Microsoft.
With a headline of ‘Death by Xbox’, the paper has pushed to the fore the tragic case of Chris Staniforth, a 20-year-old who died of deep-vein-thrombosis (DVT).
The report directly links the DVT to Staniforth spending up to 12 hours playing Xbox games – his father said he was “sucked in” to online multiplayer for games like Halo.
DVT is the formation of a blood clot that develops often without symptoms and is most commonly occurring in immobilised hospital patients or regular smokers - but is also linked to long-haul flights and travel, where it occurs due to lack of movement in transit.
The Sun throws in that “in recent years it has been increasingly been seen among those who sit for long spells in front of computer screens”. As tragic as this story is, that’s an odd claim to throw in when it can occur in anyone immobilised or still for a long period of time. (And let’s not forget an Xbox needs to be plugged into a TV, not a computer.)
Staniforth’s father David said he is now launching a campaign to raise awareness of DVT and video games – but added he isn’t levelling criticism at Microsoft.
“Kids all over the country are playing these video games,” he told The Sun. “They don’t realise it could kill them.
“I’m not for one minute blaming the manufacturer of Xbox. It isn’t their fault that people use them for so long. But I want to highlight the dangers that can arise.
“Playing on it for so long is what killed him – and I don’t want another child to die.”
A statement from Microsoft said: “We recommend gamers take breaks to exercise as well as make time for other pursuits.”
The report comes just a few days after The Sun published a report about an asthmatic teenage girl who suffered “a heart attack while playing on her Xbox”, and four months after it ran a widely-mocked report about how the Nintendo 3DS poses a health-risk and made players ill or dizzy.

Kinect creative director Kudo Tsunoda believes Kinect has the potential to revolutionise player-character interaction.
Speaking in the latest issue of Edge, which is arriving with subscribers now and will be available from all good newsagents next week, the general manager of Microsoft Game Studios said: "[Something] we struggled with in the games industry for a long time is building an emotional connection between the person playing and the characters inside the games.
"With Kinect, [you are] able to talk to characters inside the games, and experience not just voice recognition but them being able to understand the tone of your voice and how you're saying things, and being able to see your body and incorporating that into relationships.
"I think with the launch game Kinectimals you're starting to see a type of human-to-digital character relationship that can be built using Kinect. I think Kinect technology allows us to build stories and storytelling in a way that is more user-driven, that hasn't been done before."
It seems strange then, as the mag points out, that Microsoft opted to axe Lionhead's Milo & Kate, but Tsunoda said games prioritising player-character interaction are on the way. "That's going to be coming soon."

As far as Deathsmiles developer Cave is concerned, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform can go to hell. Bullet-hell, that is! Makoto Asada, head of Cave's Game Development Department, has announced via dev-blog that the company is currently developing a shooter for Microsoft's burgeoning smartphone OS.
Beyond the fact that development is somewhere between 20 and 30 percent complete, details are scarce. No screenshots or other information have been given, though the announcement refers to the game as an original title, which more than likely means it won't be a port of Cave's recent Deathsmiles release for iOS (above). It's also safe to assume that the game will be bewilderingly difficult.

Microsoft has revealed to CVG that Xbox Live's last 12 months were its biggest ever in terms of recruiting new members to the service.
The platform holder won't get too specific on numbers - only revealing that Live now boasts a community of over 35 million worldwide.
However, Robin Burrowes, Xbox Live product marketing manager for EMEA [Europe, Middle East and Africa], said that Live memberships had "swum in tandem" with increased adoption rates since the launch of Kinect.
He told CVG: "The last twelve months has been our biggest in terms of acquisition [of new members] - in the EMEA region and globally... And we're actually forecasting the next 12 months to be even bigger.
"We've certainly got aspirations in the console space to be the No.1 in terms of market share. Those aspirations are clear. We're exceptionally confident that the 12 months ahead will spark [Xbox Live's] growth.
"We're making sure we're aligned behind the core games that have been the lifeblood of Xbox Live. With Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 12, Gears 3, Forza 4 and Halo Anniversary all coming in a very action packed period , it's a very strong time for us.
"But the second wave of Kinect titles will have a deeper, more obvious Xbox Live component to them, from multiplayer in Kinect Sports [2] to co-op modes in Dance Central [2] - suggest we will be harnessing the power of those games more with Xbox Live."
And that's not all. According to Burrowes, Microsoft is readying announcements for a "whole bunch" of new entertainment partners in the autumn.
That means more TV and movies on Xbox Zune, we should imagine. Result.

The ESPN application on Xbox Live offered some interesting functionality to sports fans, though perhaps not enough to make it a viable competitor for their standard cable fare. ESPN 2.0, a massive renovation of the platform scheduled to launch August 25 (just in time for college football), will be a much more worthy contender.
Gizmodo recently previewed the updated software, revealing a number of its new, tantalizing features, such as the ability to watch two games on ESPN 3 at once, and a live score feed on the side of the UI.
The highlight feature is the new Guide, a carousel of thumbnails showing currently streaming programs, each of which include stats, scores and information about each game. Check out a video demonstration of the software on Gizmodo, and join us in wishing for a future where every sport is simulcast conveniently on our gaming consoles. (We've just got to get our Jai-alai fix.)

July 28th, 2011, 00:39 Posted By: wraggster
Epic Games isn't presumptuous enough to draw up its ideal specs from the next PlayStation and Xbox, but it knows one thing: it wants more memory.
The tech and software firm has been very vocal in recent months about its desire for the industry's next-gen machines to match top-end PCs.
It was a point driven home by its astounding Samaritan demo at GDC in March, which showcased Unreal Engine 3's new DX-11-compatible capabilities. If you haven't seen it yet, we very much recommend you do so now.
When we asked Epic European boss Mike Gamble what the firm wanted from the next-gen, he told us: "Basically, Samaritan was our request to the hardware manufacturers - that's what we'd like to be able to do. Beyond that we don't really know anything."
Senior technical artist and level designer Alan Willard agreed, adding: "There's always that question, nobody has knowledge for sure until the manufacturers say 'here's our minimum specs'. We obviously have things that we'd very much like to see but until the major console manufacturers come out and say 'here's what we're thinking' we won't be able to make any concrete plans."
However, when asked how they'd feel about consoles that offer little more in the way of raw horsepower and more in other areas, like AI capabilities - as discussed by Ubisoft - both execs made it clear that there was one enhancement Epic would be petitioning for above all.
"I think our biggest request from any new console will always be more memory - more than anything else," Gamble told us.
Willard added: "Yep, that's something we lobbied for with the Xbox 360 and PS3. We talked to them and went: 'Hey, here's what we can do with this and here's what we can do with that. Give us more memory and we can do better.' That was a win for us and that is something that will always give us a bigger platform to work on."
PlayStation 3 contains 256 MB of XDR DRAM main memory and 256 MB of GDDR3 video memory, whilst Xbox 360 offers 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM.
When asked if there may come a stage in the future where gaming graphics could became 'too real', Willard said:
"It's to problematic to make something that's...well, nobody wants to go home, sit down and play their own life, I think that's one of the mistakes that a lot of people assume. You want it to look good, you don't want it to look real. Yes we want to make characters look really good but if you look at BioShock Infinite those characters look fantastic - Gears of War's characters look great. They're not photo-realistic, they're not meant to be. They're meant to be interesting, fun and great game content."
