The Xbox 360's first party output has been superior to Nintendo and Sony's efforts on their consoles, so says a top Microsoft exec.
When IndustryGamers suggested that Microsoft might need to invest in more studios to better compete with its two competitors, Xbox CFO Dennis Durkin argued that it is in fact pacing ahead of both Nintendo and Sony.
"I would ask you to go and look at some of your data," he explained, "just to compare first party performance over the course of this lifecycle, because I think our first party performance in terms of quality bars and units per title this shift has been superior to our competition's."
"You can’t dispute titles like Forza, which has consistently come out on a repeated cadence and sold multi-million units. You can’t dispute things like Fable, which again, on a very consistent pace, has come out and sold two and three million units a pop.
"And now new titles, like Kinect Sports, which has come out and sold over three million units. So we are, not only building existing IP and incubating around titles like Halo and others, but really building new IP in new areas. And that's going to be core to us... to build those experiences and monetise those."
While it's not easy to judge Durkin's claims regarding units sold, the quality issue is relatively easy to qualify. According to Metacritic, Microsoft Game Studios titles boast an average score of 75, compared to 77 for Nintendo and 73 for Sony.
Looking ahead, Microsoft's current first party slate includes Forza Motorsport 4, Gears of War 3, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Kinect Star Wars, The Gunstringer, Kinect Sports: Season Two, Halo 4 and Fable: The Journey.

Earlier this week at the Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft's Andy Lees discussed the company's vision for a "single ecosystem" encompassing PCs, phones, tablets, and TVs.
Lees revealed Microsoft is aiming to provide a "coherence and consistency" across all its devices "particularly with Xbox".
"We won't have an ecosystem for PCs, and one for phones, and one for tablets - they'll all come together," he explained.
Although it's only speculation at the moment experts are guessing that Microsoft will likely launch a new operating system after Windows 8 that is designed to run on PCs, tablets, phones, as well as the next-generation Xbox console.
2K boss Christoph Hartmann has said Microsoft and Sony are "experimenting" with Kinect and Move for what could be the foundations of their next-generation console plans.

The next consoles from Sony and Microsoft will not launch until three years' time, predicts GameStop.
Senior executives from the US retail giant made the claim during a series of investor meetings, according to financial research firm Baird.
A statement read: "Management does not expect new hardware consoles from Microsoft and Sony until 2014; however, a successful launch of Nintendo's Wii U in 2012 could add pressure to accelerate a hardware refresh.
"GameStop is also upbeat on the coming launch of Sony's PlayStation Vita handheld gaming device, which has a $249 price-point within the reach of many gamers.
"As for the motion controller launched a year ago, management indicated more software is needed to maintain sales momentum."

Microsoft could be working to bring Kinect-like capabilities to smartphones and other mobile devices.
That's according to a Reuters report, which claims Microsoft's 2010 acquisition of gesture recognition firm Canesta may provide a return in the form of a smaller Kinect-type product capable of fitting into a handset.
The report states: "Canesta's engine is said to outperform the PrimeSensor which Microsoft is currently licensing from PrimeSense Ltd. for its Kinect.
"When Microsoft commercialises the Canesta-invented chip-level work-alike of the PrimeSensor, it will be able to downsize the foot-long Kinect to about a square centimetre, enabling tiny robots and other mobile devices, such as the Windows Phone, to perform sophisticated gesture recognition for natural user interfaces, autonomous navigation and many other tasks."
That's all well and good, but we'd still like to see Kinect used more effectively with games. Microsoft European Games Studios boss Peter Molyneux said this month he understands criticism aimed at the motion sensor by core gamers, but reasoned that "any invention as big as Kinect" will take time for developers to get their teeth into.
It might not be too long though, as Kinect creative director Kudo Tsunoda said in June that developers are starting to unlock "a whole bunch of new stuff" with their "super-responsive" second round of Kinect titles.

From lantus360.com:
[QUOTE]
Just a quick Amiga 360 update. I’ve scrapped using E-UAE as the source for the emulation. I’ve found while its OK, it has compatability issues and im not happy with.
I’ve now switched over to PUAE (https://github.com/GnoStiC/PUAE) – which is written by GnoStiC and an effort to merge in the latest WinUAE codebase across to E-UAE. It has much better compatability and fixes and has active development.
Being an Amiga fan, this is important to get the best possible emulation on the Xbox 360 and it is definetly the right way going forward. As a result however, i scrapped all the old Amiga360 code and started over. However, things are progressing quickly and a release should be soon. Right now, this is all i am focused on (MAME, FBANext etc are all on the backburner) until this is released.
Stay tuned!

Today's reports that Microsoft will be launching a new Xbox 360 music service later this year are "inaccurate", a Microsoft rep has clarified to CVG.
It was widely reported this morning that Microsoft will launch a new console-based service called Xbox Music this autumn, citing an announcement from CEO Steve Ballmer during a Microsoft Partner Conference yesterday. But this isn't entirely accurate, MS has told us.
"Reports that Microsoft is launching a new music service on Xbox this fall are inaccurate," said the MS rep in response to this morning's reports.
"A recent demonstration of upcoming Xbox features showcased what we will deliver later this fall on Xbox, including voice search with Bing on Xbox to locate and access entertainment content on the console. This includes Zune music which has a catalogue of more than 11 million tracks."
So it's just a new voice-recognition feature linked to the Zune music service via MS' Bing search engine.
Are we clear, soldier?

July 12th, 2011, 23:22 Posted By: wraggster
As part of his Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference speech, Microsoft chief exec Steve Ballmer has admitted that Windows Phone 7 is not flying off the shelves as fast as the firm would have hoped.
While still enthusiastically explaining how successful Microsoft is, there were concessions to its trailing position in the area. “We’ve gone from very small to small,” Ballmer reportedly said (though this actual line doesn’t appear to be in the keynote video).
Unsurprisingly, the recent deal with Nokia was held up as a huge advocacy of the system, He also pointed out that a year ago, Microsoft had no Windows Phone, but that in the last year it’s sold millions. Describing the market as “busy and competitive”, he admitted the firm “had a bit of work to do to break through.”
Snapping back into more typical corporate bravado, Ballmer went on to say according to its survey, nine out of ten users would recommend Windows Phone to a friend, and that 20,000 apps have been made available in eight months – claiming this represents a faster ramp up than either Android or iPhone.
This may be true, but it does seem to imply Microsoft would like us to believe its business in mobile phones started with Phone 7 last year, disregarding the less popular previous version Windows Mobile 6.5, and all the forerunners before it. That’s it’s prerogative of course, but the stat that stands in the wilderness somewhat, since Google and Apple don’t restart the clock each time they bring out a new version of their respective OS.
Comparing the launch of Phone 7 to the entire business models of rivals is arguable the same as comparing the launch of the Froyo update to the launch of the iPhone years before. In other words, not terribly representative of the full picture.
Ballmer added that Nokia was continuing to push Microsoft into wider geographical areas and to multiple price points. This would make sense, since these days Nokia’s real strength lies not in the smartphone market, but in the cheaper, feature phone market, which proportionally tend to do better in emerging markets – or weaker economies – around the world.

Maybe you're one of the lucky few who have plenty of space where 65-inch televisions are barely big enough to outfit your palatial estate. If so, we hate you (not really). Or perhaps you're like us at Engadget HQ where our city apartments are barely big enough for our Nabaztags. If so, Nyko has a $29 device coming August 23 called the Zoom that'll attach to your Kinect sensor to reduce the amount of flail-space required by about 40 percent. That translates to just four feet of distance from your Kinect. How does it do it? With lenses that refocus the sensors, so it has no power requirements. Call them glasses for your Kinect without the jabs from your classmates because they can't see you playing Kinect Adventures anyway, trooper.

Microsoft has responded to rumours that it is to introduce an R2-D2-themed Xbox 360 onto the market - in cheeky fashion.
Reports from earlier this week suggested the platform holder is preparing a special blue and white version of the console to coincide with the release of Kinect Star Wars later this year.
When asked about the rumour, an MS spokesperson told CVG: "As you know, rumours are rumours and we don't comment on them. May the force be with you."
A sly nod to some exciting Star Wars-related news to come - or a mere dismissal?
We've certainly got our fingers crossed that the rumours are true. One can never have too much Star Wars memorabilia. Unless it's Jar-Jar Binks, naturally.

Don't be shy now: which of you doesn't love raiding your mother's closet and trying on her paisley dresses and velour tracksuits? That's more or less the idea behind Virtual Dressing Room, a Kinect hack that taps into the clandestine thrill of sneaking into other people's boudoirs. Unlike some other shopping hacks we've seen, the app goes beyond just pilling on 2D pieces, but uses 3D models so that the items mold to your limbs, with the shadows and creases in the virtual fabric changing as you preen for the camera. That all comes courtesy of a special physics engine, while the app itself was written in C# along with Microsoft's XNA tools. Arbuzz, the group that dreamed this up, says the project's still a work in progress, though we can see this, too, being used to relieve those of who are allergic to shopping malls. Until then, you'll just have to settle for watching some other guy work a knee-length skirt.

Microsoft's planning to release a limited edition R2-D2 Xbox 360 console - complete with Kinect sensor - to coincide with the release of Kinect Star Wars later this year.
That's according to Kinectaku's retail sources, who claim the special edition Xbox 360 and Kinect sensor will come clad in a blue and white paint job - just like the Star Wars droid.
Microsoft's become quite fond of custom hardware releases since the arrival of its revamped Xbox 360 model, with Halo and Gears of War versions already cooked up.

Microsoft believes a new wave of locally developed Kinect titles will help boost sales of the peripheral in Japan.
Earlier this week, the platform holder's Japanese Xbox 360 general manager Takashi Sensui admitted that the console's motion-sensing camera did not met expectations at launch in the region, according to Andriasang.
Kinect sold around 26,000 units in its first two dales on sale in Japan back in November last year. By comparison, Sony's PlayStation Move sold just over 50,000 units in its opening weekend.
However, Sensui hopes that a number of Kinect exclusives developed by Japanese studios will help increase the device's appeal to local gamers and increase sales.
The titles in question include Codename D, Haunt, Project Draco, Rise of Nightmares and Steel Battalion: Heavy Amor, Eurogamer reports.

Microsoft's Zune Marketplace may be getting a new business directive in the coming months, as a report this morning suggests that the current service on Xbox 360 will soon offer a streaming subscription option. Anonymous sources in Microsoft's Redmond, Washington homebase tell The Daily that the Zune-branded service will become an additional source of streaming content alongside the Xbox 360's current Netflix and Hulu Plus options.
Could this be the service Microsoft announced during its E3 2011 press conference, and has yet to speak about with any specificity? Or is it some derivation of the rumored Xbox Live Diamond project? That remains unclear, but with the company's plans to launch some form of streaming television on Xbox 360 this fall, it stands to reason we'll hear more about what's actually going on in the not-so-distant future.

Turns out, the home of Mario and Sonic is still a tough world to penetrate for Microsoft's gaming division, despite its near-decade presence in the market. While homegrown Nintendo and Sony products receive much of the love and Yen, newly-hatched industry outsiders are left to fend for themselves. Having finally broached the one million mark in Japan for its five-year-old console, MS is shifting the focus to its Kinect launch failures. Unsurprisingly, the full-body motion control accessory hasn't jump-kicked its way into as many Japanese hearts and households as the Ballmer-led company would like, so it's shuffling the deck at its Japanese outpost in order to spin the strategy a bit differently. Announced via press conference today, Takashi Sensui -- former head of the Home and Entertainment division -- will now oversee the newly created Interactive Entertainment Business division. Also in the works are some very culturally-tailored IPs for the Kinect platform: the Suda51-produced Codename D and a version of Steel Battalion from Capcom. Whatever the result of this renewed push may be, it sure won't be long before Microsoft gets to give Japan the old next generation college try. After all, third time's the charm.
