Speaking at the Xbox 360 press conference in Tokyo, Takahashi Sensui, Microsoft Japan's Xbox division manager, has declared that 2006 will be "the stepping stone" to Microsoft's inevitable success in the region.
According to US website Gamespot, which translated the conference, Sensui's opening speech began with an affirmation of his confidence in the capabilities of the Xbox 360 and the company's ability to perform well in the territory.
"Since the launch of the original Xbox in 2002, there was one thing that we have consistently said: Microsoft will inevitably succeed in Japan," Sensui stated, adding: "The Xbox 360 is not just the only next-generation console available in the market, but it will also continue to be the best console for years to come."
Japanese sales of the new console have been sluggish to say the least, and it was the only territory that didn't sell out at launch in December, despite having a much lower initial supply than both America and Europe. As with the original Xbox, Microsoft is having to work exceptionally hard to convince Japanese consumers to purchase their machine, rather than holding out for Sony's PS3.
Conscious of the need for quality games to help drive sales, Sensui showed the packaging for Testsuya Mizuguchi's long awaited Ninety-Nine Nights, assuring the press that it will be released on April 20th following numerous quality control delays. He also stated that there have been 25 games released for the platform since its December debut, and this number is expected to grow to around 40 games by summer - doubling to around 80 by the end of the year.
Stressing the importance of the Xbox Live service in growing the community in Japan, Sensui commented that 95 per cent of consumers had accessed the Xbox Live Marketplace, with 520,000 downloads recorded to date. The company has reached new agreements with Namco Bandai Games, Konami, SNK Playmore, Hudson, Yukes and D3 Publisher to bring a slew of new content to the Xbox Live Arcade service, and there is also a range of additional Marketplace content planned - such as an eight minute trailer for Tatsunoko production's 40th anniversary commemorative anime film, Karas.
"Xbox Live, which we have been operating since three years ago, has developed into a service that expands the user community for the Xbox 360," Sensui stated. "We plan to continuously make new additions to its capabilities. The Xbox 360 and Xbox Live will keep on evolving, and together, they will continue to be the best gaming platform."
Reminding the conference attendees of comments made by the company's worldwide Xbox division manger, Peter Moore, Sensui stated: "Microsoft believes that it isn't a true success unless we succeed in the Japanese gaming market. We will be fully committed to the Japanese market. As everyone may know, the Xbox 360 has taken the European and American markets by storm. As the chief of Japan's Xbox division, it will be my duty to realize the same kind of success, here in Japan.

Xport released a new version of WinUAEX - an Amiga Emulator for Xbox.
Heres whats new:
* ISO/MP3/CUE support (but same CDDA bug as with real CDs - see notes)
* ISO/MP3/CUE also works across network and on ISO9660
* GUI brought up-to-date
* Minor optimizations, perhaps extra 1-2 fps
* Fixed bug where if you changed graphics filters you would get black screen
* Fixed ISO9660 bugs
* Fixed Relax bugs
* Fixed bug where mouse input was not being recognized if only one USB mouse was attached to the XBox. Hopefully 2-mice will still work.
* Flicker filter setting now saved for each game
* Multiple joysticks problem should be fixed
* CD32 Blue button fixed
* Cleaned up the Kickstart ROMs and gave proper names to them.
* Added more robust/correct "Machine Defaults"
* Save states now store the currently inserted disks in all of the disk drives. Now you shouldn't have to worry about whether or not you have the correct disks in the drives when you load a previously saved state.
* New game configuration option : "Clip Excess Video Borders". When enabled, WinUAEX will attempt to only display the currently active game screen and remove the excess space. This can result in some screen jumpiness in certain circumstances, but does give pleasing results from time to time. This is off by default.
* Fixed bug where if you configured/ran a HDF file, then exited the emulator, restarted it, and tried to load the game again from the saved configuration, it would fail.
* Can now select keys on the virtual keyboard with the Left Analog stick
* New in-game menu option "Rotate Disks" - this will rotate the disks in the 4 floppy drives. This can also be assigned to a button combination in the usual way. (Go to controller configuration, Change Emulator Definitions, then map one of the "Emu Buttons" to "Rotate Disks" (it's at the very end of the list), then go to Change Joypad Mappings, Change Game Mappings, and assign it a button combination.)

Could be usefull for 360 owners who dont have enough space, this is what they say about it:
'The problem with the Xbox 360’s built-in hard drive is it just isn’t big enough. 12GB of usable space might be sufficient for the casual gamer, but the hardcore joypad juggler needs more. With XSATA, the latest devious device from Datel, you can free up hard drive space by transferring content between your console and your PC. You need never run out of hard drive space on your XB360 again!
Using your Xbox 360 file manager software such as the free PC app Xplorer 360, you can transfer materials from your console’s hard drive to your PC, using your computer’s hard disc space to store demos, game saves and other such materials you’re not currently using. When you need them again, just transfer back to the XB360’s drive. Once the data is on your PC, you can email anything that’s not locked to your machine or L!VE account to your friends for them to use on their own consoles too.
XSATA is a plug-and-play device that sits between your XB360’s hard drive and the console itself. There’s no need to remove your XB360’s hard drive to use it. The PC and the 360 can then ‘share’ the HDD so it can remain in place at all times. To connect, just plug the supplied cable into the High Speed USB port on the back of XSATA and into any spare USB port on your PC. XSATA is USB 2.0-compatible, so you can expect ultra-fast transfer speeds of up to 480mbps. It looks great too, with blue laser light giving a real cool edge to your console.
XSATA for Xbox 360 is in the shops now. As always, it's also available direct from Datel's Codejunkies Shop for a mere £29.99. Get one today - you know it makes sense...'
The info page for any American readers the US versions $39.99

Responding to slow sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan, Microsoft has announced that it will increase the software library for the system to 80 titles in the region by the end of the year, over three times the current number of titles on offer.
At present, 25 titles are available for the Xbox 360 in Japan, a number which Microsoft says it will raise to 40 titles by summer, and 80 titles by the end of the year - as well as boosting the range of content available on Xbox Live Marketplace.
Speaking at an event earlier today in Tokyo, new Xbox Japan general manager Takashi Sensui announced the company's promise " to continuously introduce game software in a variety of genres" for the next-gen platform.
Rather than simply citing numbers, Sensui handed the stage over to game developers with new titles to announce - including Square Enix, who are developing a shoot 'em up called Project Sylph for the system, and Star Ocean creators Tri-Ace, who are working on an untitled Xbox 360 RPG.
Bandai Namco had two new titles to announce, in the form of Zegapain XOR, an adventure / shoot 'em up title, and Culdcept Saga, a Live-enabled game which follows on from previous Culdcept titles on PSone, Dreamcast and PS2. The firm also reported good progress on its Gundam title for the 360.
Interestingly, Japan has turned out to be the strongest territory in the world per capita in terms of Xbox Live Marketplace downloads, with 520,000 content downloads reported over an installed base of just 123,000 units.
Unsurprisingly, then, new titles for Live Arcade were also in the offing today - with Bandai Namco revealing that both Galaga and Pac-Man, two of the firm's most celebrated retro games, will be coming to the system.
Although the announcements don't quite add up to the Xbox 360 relaunch which was predicted by some Japanese wholesale sources last week, it's nonetheless an impressive set of new titles for the system - and there's a new version of the Xbox 360 hardware on the way in Japan, too.
The Xbox 360 Blue Limited Edition will arrive on April 20th, and is decorated in the colours of Japan's world cup football team - in fact, it's emblazoned with the 2006 FIFA World Cup logo. This will be the first custom version of the Xbox 360 to launch in any territory.

April 7th, 2006, 20:39 Posted By: wraggster
French publisher Ubisoft has signed a deal with VIZ Media, the North American license holder for the wildly popular Naruto manga franchise, to develop an Xbox 360 game based on the series for release in 2007.
Naruto has been one of the most popular manga and latterly anime series in the world since its launch in leading Japanese weekly manga magazine Shonen Jump in 1999, and the anime series based on the comics is now running on Cartoon Network in the US.
As you might expect from a manga focused on the training and battles of a group of young ninjas, Naruto has spawned quite a number of games - most notably a very popular series of beat 'em up titles on the GameCube - but few of these have ever seen the light of day outside Japan.
Ubisoft's license for the series is somewhat peculiar in that it will see the company developing an Xbox 360 game based on a popular Japanese property, but not for the Japanese market - the company doesn't have the rights to launch Naruto titles within Japan, where they are held by Namco Bandai.
The French company plans to develop the game using its own significant internal development resources, and will release it across the western hemisphere in 2007 - by which point the anime series should be well into its run on TV networks in most major territories.
It would appear that Ubisoft's license is also non-exclusive, and Japanese-developed Naruto games will continue to be released in western territories - with the next one due for launch being CyberConnect2's Naruto: Ultimate Ninja, which will appear in North America in June.

A new program being pushed by Microsoft and retailer Best Buy in the USA will see Xbox 360 branded wristbands being sold to raise money for charity - and to raise parental awareness of age ratings on videogames.
A variety of Xbox 360 wristbands - of the ubiquitous rubber style seen on the wrists of teenagers and some people old enough to know better - will be sold for $1 each, featuring slogans such as "Life Is Your Game" and "Challenge Me".
The proceeds from the sale will go to funding the Club Tech programme at the Boys & Girls Club of America, a specific programme which Microsoft founded to help to educate children about using technology safely (which presumably involves protecting themselves from unpleasant types online and so forth, as opposed to simply telling them not to stick their fingers in plug sockets).
However, an extra dimension is added to the campaign by the addition of a pamphlet with each wristband sold, which is aimed at parents and will explain the ESRB rating system and how to set up the parental lockout features on game consoles - a feature which is included on most modern systems but which few parents actually use to control their children's access to adult content.

The biggest announcement during today's Xbox 360 conference in Tokyo was the unveiling of a new exclusive title by Square Enix. Although that was a big enough surprise for the attending press, what caught them even more off guard was that the game wouldn't be a role-playing game. The publisher of Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior is instead working on a shooter with Game Arts, developer of the Grandia RPG series.
Square Enix executive producer Yousuke Saito appeared onstage with Game Arts board director Satoshi Uesaka to confirm that the two companies are working together on a new shooting game. Under the working name of "Project Sylph," the shooter was hinted at as the next installment in Game Arts' Silpheed series, which has appeared on the PC, Sega CD, and PlayStation 2.
"Using the High Definition capabilities of the Xbox 360, we hope to realize stunning visuals in our shooting game that features as much details as possible," Saito said. "As one characteristic, this won't be just an ordinary shooter. As Square Enix, we will be adding a level of drama to our shooting game."
According to a trailer that followed Saito's comments, Project Sylph takes place in the 27th century where mankind has traveled outside of the solar system to explore a new frontier. While time has passed by, civilization has not forgotten war, and they continue to fight one another. The trailer showed that the game will be a sci-fi shooter, and it included glimpses of a couple of cutscenes. In one clip, ships blew each other apart with laser beams, while another scene showed a city being blasted away.
A shooting game by Square Enix may seem highly irregular, but this isn't the first time the company has worked in the genre. Back on the NES in 1986, one of the very first titles released by Square was a shooting game titled King's Knight. The company also released the 3D shooter Einhander for the PlayStation in 1997.

Microsoft is working hard to keep the Xbox 360 in the game in Japan. The latest effort in the ongoing campaign to establish a beachhead in the Far East was a press event held today to trumpet the company's successes to date and get exposure for upcoming releases.
According to an Impress Watch report, new Xbox Japan head Takashi Sensui opened the event with fighting words, saying, "Xbox 360 is the only next-gen console right now, and it will be the best game machine for years to come. On top of that, it's easy to exploit its capabilities to produce high-quality next-gen games."
Sensui went on to promise that Xbox 360 would succeed in Japan, reminding the audience of Microsoft's record in the PC operating system market. After rallying the troops, Sensui passed the mic to representatives of firms with Xbox 360 games in development.
Developer Tri-Ace, known for its work on Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean, announced that it is working with Microsoft Game Studios on a new, as-yet-untitled Xbox 360 game. While details were scarce, it will be a role-playing game, and Tri-Ace suggested that the action will be real time rather than turn-based.
Square Enix and Game Arts took the stand next to announce Project Sylph, an Xbox 360 exclusive the companies are developing together. This wasn't the only shooter announced for Microsoft's console today.
A Bandai Namco executive announced that Galaga and Pac-Man would both be coming to Xbox Live. He noted that the re-creations of these arcade classics are so faithful to the originals that old patterns and timing still work. Like other Xbox Live Arcade games, Pac-Man and Galaga will feature global scoreboards for worldwide competition.
The Bandai Namco exec then moved on to talk about full-scale retail games. He referenced the recently announced shooting adventure game called Zegapain XOR, and showed off screenshots of the giant robot game. That was followed up with the announcement of Culdcept Saga, a Live-enabled game that will be the latest entrant in the popular Magic-meets-Monopoly game franchise that had previous installments on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation, and Dreamcast.
Taking time out from development work on a clutch of Xbox 360-exclusive RPGs, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi gave a progress report on a number of projects under way at his Mistwalker development company. His first game, Blue Dragon, is on track for a 2006 release. Sakaguchi says the game is playable and his team is currently focused on game balance and presentation. Sakaguchi's second game, Lost Odyssey, is slated for a 2007 launch.
Mistwalker is also working on a third Xbox 360 game entitled Cry On, and he admitted that between the three games, his team was working at--or maybe over--its capacity. Bringing three Sakaguchi games to its new platform is a considerable coup for Microsoft, and it will be interesting to see how his games affect Japanese sales of the console when they launch.
The press event closed with a look at the Xbox 360 Blue Limited Edition: 2006 FIFA World Cup console, and a demonstration of the hotly anticipated Ninety-Nine Nights, set to launch in Japan on April 20.

Microsoft's announced a raft of Japanese-developed games for Xbox 360, along with more support for Xbox Live Arcade in the region - where it claims the downloads-per-unit-sold ratio is at its highest with 520,000 pieces of content retrieved.
Speaking at a press conference in Japan, Microsoft announced that a new, unnamed Final Fantasy game would be released on Xbox 360 in 2007, while Tri-Ace (Radiata Stories, Star Ocean) is at work on an unnamed action RPG.
Hironobu Sakaguchi was on hand, too, to reveal that one of the two RPGs he's overseeing, Blue Dragon, will be released before the end of 2006 in Japan, while a demo of the other one, Lost Odyssey, should turn up this autumn.
There was also news of a new shooter from Square Enix and Game Arts called Project Sylph - prompting commentators to ask whether it's a continuation of the Silpheed series, which appeared on Mega CD and PS2 during its time.
Microsoft also showed off a trailer for a Gundam shooter, and spoke a bit about the system's involvement with anime - Zegapain will appear in some form with downloadable content - and hinted that Namco's Culdcept Saga could be playable over Live.
More interesting from an international perspective, perhaps, was talk of Japanese publisher support for Xbox Live Arcade from Konami, Hudson (rumoured to be considering a Bomberman port), SNK, Namco, DS Publisher and Bandai.
Pac-Man and Galaga are shoe-ins for Live Arcade, according to reports from the press conference, and given the amount of retro compilations some of that lot have produced over the years, it's easy to let the mind wander into exciting territory.
We'll bring you more on all of that as and when we hear it.

It's been a little while since we last took Rare's monster-masher for a spin, but we'll be dusting off our Kameo discs imminently to check out the brand new downloadable content, which has just landed on Xbox Live.
First up is the much-anticipated - and free-of-charge - patch, enabling co-op over Xbox Live. The feature was originally planned for inclusion when the game was originally released, but a rush to meet the 360 launch meant it was relegated to realms of future possibility.
Secondly, new Kameo costume packs are available on Xbox Live Marketplace and - for 200 Microsoft points - you can tart-up your elemental warriors with some fancy new skins. The Fright Warrior Pack decks out Kameo's characters in new scary attire, while the Masquerade Pack apparently provides recognisable outfits from previous Rare games - no word yet if the Great Mighty Poo gets a look-in.

Microsoft has announced that its Microsoft Game Studios division has acquired Lionhead Studios, confirming recent rumour wafting around the internet that the purchase was in the pipeline.
According to Microsoft's announcement, Lionhead will "immediately begin creating content exclusively for the Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows platforms". No specific projects have been mentioned, but Fable 2 from Lionhead is a definite. We'd bet our pet monkey's floppy hat that Lionhead's very elusive Project Dimitri will materialise on both platforms too - and any new Black & White game.
All we know about Project Dimitri is the brief description Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux gave us last year: "It's a game about... you. It allows anyone who plays the game to relive their life, their entire individual life. That's a pretty ambitious concept."
Speaking about the acquisition today, Molyneux said that Lionhead "could not be more excited about being part of MGS."
"They have long supported our creative vision, and this teamwork resulted in the hugely successful Fable franchise," he added, concluding: "This acquisition gives Lionhead the stability and opportunity to focus on creating world-class next-generation titles. We are joining some of the most incredible game creators in the industry, the combined talent of which will truly take next-generation gaming to a new level."

You'll have probably already read our piece on Microsoft trying to boost its Xbox 360 momentum in Japan with the announcement of a raft of new titles, but it seems Japanese gamers are to going to get further incentives in the form of some all-time classic arcade games being made available for download on Microsoft's Arcade service.
Bandai Namco, SNK Playmore, Hudson and Konami will all be adding their weight to Live Arcade in Japan with a mix of new and retro classics like Pac-Man and Galaga from Bandai, potentially boosting the service's appeal with the best and brightest from the arcades.
To add further incentive, Japanese 360 gamers will be encouraged and lured in with the prospect of some big hitting arcade tournaments and championships, with Bandai Namco Vice President Takeo Takasu saying he'd like to kick things off with a Pac-Man world championship.
It's an intriguing strategy to try and lure gamers onto 360 in the Land of the Rising Sun, but whether it's a truly killer feature which will drive 360 sales remains to be seen. Japanese gamers crave traditionally strong Japanese titles like massive RPGs, though a massive Pac-Man tournament might prove very tempting.
Western gamers too could potentially benefit from an expanded Live Arcade line-up and we certainly wouldn't mind having a crack at some of those games we used to chuck thousands of ten pences at. We've put in a call to MS to see if and when we'll get those arcade classics over here, and we'll update you as soon as the company update us.
