It’s a week and change before E3 and rumors are already flying. The scheduled outage of Xbox Live on Tuesday is leading some people to guess that Microsoft is finally releasing the update that allows people to download marketplace content in the background. This makes sense, seeing as MS providing loads of E3-related content on Xbox Live during the event.
Along with the improved downloading, another rumored feature is the ability to send voice and text messages to people during games. Isn’t this already there on dashboard?

We're all geared up to get a look at Team Ninja's second Xbox 360 title at E3, but it appears that looking is all we'll be doing. According to the latest issue of Famitsu, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 will make an appearance at Tecmo's E3 booth, but in video form only.
Don't take this to be absolute confirmation of a hands-off only appearance for the game, though. We'll be sure and let you know if we manage to get some play time.

News via RUNTIME:
Little did I know that in developing DVD ISO and VIDEO_TS streaming I’d end up with a practical solution for handling 5.1 audio. So along with a number of other goodies, I’m pleased to report that the next build will once again feature AC3 support
Just as (if not more) important is a new ‘Easy’ installation option that no longer mandates that you install an NT service, this completely avoids all the nasty permissions issues that are typically involved with services and networking.
Finally after a little perseverance I managed to find and fix a nasty AV sync bug primarily affecting US-orginating content encoded at 23.97 fps.
All in all the next build is shaping up very nicely indeed!
Now onto some admin: I’m seriously considering reorganising the testers group and opening up internal builds to project sponsors who’re interested in gaining access to early builds, testing and generally living life on the bleeding edge!
I still need to work out whether or not it would be feasible to coordinate - anyway is this something that would interest you?

With no online play, a bunch of short campaigns that can be completed in a few days, no balance whatsoever, no story, and the worst boss fights you’ll ever experience, N3 is a game that can’t even stand up to the ranking of “average”. While it’s true that for 70% of each stage while you are just mashing buttons and sending enemies flying, N3 is an enjoyable mindless romp, the fact of the matter is that the other 30% is so bad it definitely qualifies as “broken”. If you enjoy wanting to break your controller and enjoy mediocre DW clones, then give N3 a try. Otherwise it’s barely even a rental.
Import Friendly
Sure. You slash at things marked on the radar; anyone should be able to do that.
Pros
Graphics are nice
Music is good
Crowd Control is mindless but fun if that’s your kind of thing
Cons
Boss fights are dreadful
Engine is broken when it comes to one on one fights
There is no gameplay balance
No checkpoints
No Story
No lip-synch in cutscenes and the animation is jerky for some reason
Fairly short game with limited amount of stages

Xport has released a new version of StepmaniaX
Heres Whats new:
* Core updated to Stepmania 3.9 Final
* SM-LAN support (see instructions below)
* Better support for running from a DVD (see below)
* Should be able to accommodate around 700-1000+ songs depending on how large the stepfiles are and on how many extra themes you have installed. I tested it with 700 average-sized songs and there was still enough space for another few hundred. I imagine this will be sufficient for 99% of the people out there. If you're part of that 1% with 239873298324 song files and claim to like/play all of them, then pick up a 128MB XBox.

It's creepy and curious... all at the same time. XboxVoice.com give your Xbox 360 the ability to blog all by itself. In other words, you enter your gamertag at the site, and based on what you do on Xbox Live (games played etc) Xbox360voice will automatically create a blog for your Xbox 360.
Each day your Xbox 360 will blog an entry...even if you don't game. I told you, it's kinda scary huh? You can even subscribe to an RSS feed of your Xbox's blog... or anyone else's Xbox that signed up for the service. Gives a new meaning to the term stalker, huh?
So, the next time you go to game and your significant other gives you 'that look'... just let them know you need to keep your console company or it will get lonely... and point them to your console's blog as proof.

'Halo 3 at E3' rumours have been bouncing around the 'net faster than shards from Master Chief's needler gun in the run-up to the event, but IGN has gone one step further than everyone else, insisting that Microsoft will be showing the hotly anticipated sequel in video form at the show next month.
The site is reporting that it's received confirmation that Halo 3 will be shown at Microsoft's E3 conference on May 9 from "independent sources who recently spoke with Microsoft executives." While these sources didn't divulge details on what exactly would be in the video, they apparently said that it would be two minutes in length.
Microsoft was unavailable for comment on the report at the time of writing, but if it said anything other than the usual "We do not comment on internet rumour and speculation", we'd almost feel the need to run around in large party hats blowing tooters.
We can only wait for May 9 to discover if it is indeed all true.

April 28th, 2006, 16:45 Posted By: wraggster
Legendary developer and llama farmer Jeff Minter is working on a new game, which is believed to be for the Xbox Live Arcade. Following the canning of Unity, his joint project with Peter Molyneux, Minter has discussed his rediscovery of the development muse on his blog.
"Finally starting to get a grip on this new game. Always takes a while at first and there are times of floating around with that feeling of 'I promised I would make an excellent game but I'm not feeling it yet', but it has ever been thus. In truth it's always been that way. It was exactly that way when I said I'd do Tempest 2000. I was certain the entire Jaguar community would laugh and point at me because of the crapness of what I'd made."
The last couple of weeks I've had a couple of good points of traction. One being feeling something of how I want the control and firing to be, and the other being today, building in a nice p-system generator to use for the explosions and stuff... At the moment it feels like it's starting to shake down well, the initial ideas resolving into things you can actually bolt game mechanic on."
As that blog extract cryptically suggests, Minter's new game will be a shoot-em-up. And as early visuals he posted on his blog confirm, it will look not unlike his psychedelic light synths, the most recent being Neon, which is built into the Xbox 360.
No such thing as a release date for Minter's latest project yet, but you can keep up to speed by keeping your eyes on his blog.

April 28th, 2006, 16:40 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft revealed a Q3 loss of USD 388 million in its Home and Entertainment division, which houses the Xbox 360 console, despite a gain in revenue and an overall profit for the company.
Revenue for the division, which also incorporates PC games, the Home Products Division, and TV platform products for the interactive television industry, was posted at USD 1.06 billion, but the loss was a significant increase on the USD 175 million lost in the same quarter a year prior.
A significant percentage of the loss was clearly related to the Xbox 360 console, which has suffered from continued supply shortages since its launch last November, although Microsoft VP Peter Moore stated in a conference call following the results that "Our supply challenges are behind us operationally," declaring that the company has shipped 3.2 million consoles to date and expects to shift five to five and a half units by June - a marginal increase on previous targets of 4.5-5 million.
The company has admitted that first generation consoles are sold at a loss, stating: "Our business model anticipates that while we currently sell Xbox 360 consoles at a negative margin, product cost reductions and the future margins on sales of games and other products will enable us to achieve a positive margin over the Xbox 360 console lifecycle." However, the supply shortages and the resultant increase in expenditure as Microsoft made efforts to push units into retails stores worldwide has obviously had a negative impact on the results.
And the problems are not over yet, as the company states "We expect operating expenses and operating loss to increase as a result of Xbox 360 launch-related activities and Xbox 360 console costs."
Overall revenue for the company was noticeably more positive, with revenues up 13 per cent on the same quarter in 2005, at USD 10.9 billion, and overall profit showing an increase of 17 per cent at USD 3.89 billion for the quarter. The continued Home and Entertainment division expenditure has prompted the company to lower offer a reserved fourth quarter guidance of USD 11.5-11.7 billion, dipping below analysts projections and resulting in a slight drop in share price following the announcement.

April 27th, 2006, 21:21 Posted By: wraggster
Half-Life developer Valve Software has announced that it is currently developing several as yet undisclosed titles for Microst's Xbox 360 console, using a customised version of its acclaimed Source Engine.
Although there's no official word on what titles the company is actually creating, Valve has said that its first 360 game would be coming out soon, making it extremely likely that a full disclosure will be made at the E3 expo in a couple of weeks.
President and co-founder, Gabe Newell, commented: " The combination of Source and the 360 provides game designers the chance to create powerful entertainment experiences. Whether developing a traditional FPS, RTS, RPG or delving into new genres, the Xbox 360 is a great platform for expanding Source and our game experiences."
Valve has worked with Microsoft before, the company's Xbox version of Half-Life 2 taking centre-stage on the platform holder's E3 2005 booth and achieving critical acclaim, though sales of the game were less than spectacular - something Valve says came as a surprise.
Undeterred, the company has committed to future development on Microsoft's next-gen machine and it is also likely - though unconfirmed at this stage - that console versions of existing third-party PC Source Engine titles currently available through Valve's digital distribution service, Steam, may be appearing on the Xbox 360 in the future.

April 27th, 2006, 01:05 Posted By: wraggster
Valve announced today development of future game releases for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, with the first (unnamed) title "coming soon." Valve's Gabe Newell said, "The combination of Source and the 360 provides game designers the chance to create powerful entertainment experiences...Whether developing a traditional FPS, RTS, RPG or delving into new genres, the Xbox 360 is a great platform for expanding Source and our game experiences.”
Of course there is no mention of what this mystery title is, as they're undoubtedly saving the big reveal for E3. But what could it be? We know Microsoft is interested in episodic distribution (Peter Moore told me so himself) and that Ritual is interested in bringing their Source-based SiN Episodes to the 360 (they've said so), so it seems a reasonable assumption that Valve could be bringing the episodic efforts of SiN and Half-Life 2 to the 360 platform, with Microsoft making the big announcement at E3.

In its continuing effort to ignite demand among Japanese gamers, Microsoft has cut deals with Internet cafes in central Tokyo to add Xbox 360 consoles to their offerings. The company seems to hope that hands-on trials will convert to console sales in the Japanese market, which so far has given Microsoft's next-gen game machine a chilly reception.
The promotion will run from April 27 to March 28, and according to the official Japanese Xbox site, gamers will be able to pick from the following titles:
Dead or Alive 4
2006 FIFA World Cup
Ninety-Nine Nights (N3)
Project Gotham Racing 3
Ridge Racer 6
eM eNCHANT arM
Burnout Revenge
Fight Night Round 3
Pro Yakyuu Spirits 3
Rumble Roses XX
Wrestle Kingdom
Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires
Tsuushin Taisen Mahjong Toryumon
Tengai Makyou Ziria-Haruka Naru Zipangu (a sequel to Far East of Eden: Ziria)
Japanese Internet cafes are different from their US counterparts in that they typically offer a wide range of options in addition to Internet access, including console and PC games, DVD collections, and manga libraries. As such, they attract a wide range of users--a key point for Microsoft, whose recent Xbox 360 publicity blitz has attracted only a small number of core gamers.

Those of you looking forward to Phantasy Star Universe on Xbox 360 will have to encourage your friends to do the same - SEGA's confirmed that while people with the PS2 and PC versions will be able to play together, Xbox Live players will be closed off to them.
Following a report on fan-site PSO World, SEGA's since confirmed to Eurogamer that the team decided to keep Xbox 360 players separate - although we haven't been told why.
Phantasy Star Universe for 360, announced last week, is due out at the same time as the PS2 and PC versions this autumn. It's a big old single-player adventure as well as a multiplayer one where squads of up to six can make their way through a world where hundreds of players mingle.
We should see more of PSU at E3 next month.

We've got good news for those missing out on the queues and over-priced burgers of this year's E3; for Microsoft's goodies at least, you won't have to leave your armchair.
In an interview on Xbox.com, Microsoft boss Peter Moore reveals the company's plans to cover E3 on Xbox Live. "It is our goal to bring E3 home to Xbox Live members as best we can," he said, "we will give you the flavour of what's going on, on the show floor and some of the stuff that we are showing and debuting here." Moore then vowed that Microsoft would supply videos and news from the show "as quickly as possible."
Exciting stuff for those staying at home next month, but the Xbox.com article then goes on to suggest that Live coverage could go beyond just screenshots and trailers: "Xbox Live members should be able to play many of the demos that even the celebrities will be testing out at E3," reads the article. Could you be trying out Too Human and Viva Piñata from you couch come May 10? The prospect is certainly enticing.
We're already contemplating hooking up our Xbox and staying at home, but alas there are plenty more game companies to see. Look out for our full E3 coverage next month.

April 25th, 2006, 16:50 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has just announced a new premium bundle of content for its flagship launch shooter Perfect Dark Zero. Although Ms Dark's adventures haven't perhaps set the world on fire in quite the way MS and Rare expected, the new content should give PDZ a whole new lease of life.
The bundle is set to add in four new multiplayer maps for the shooter and, apparently, it's just the first of a wave of new downloads Microsoft is ready to make available to big up the game.
For existing PDZ players, a new auto update will add eight bots to multiplayer proceedings, including a venge bot who targets the last player with a kill, a judge bot who attacks the current leader and a bully bot, who targets players at the bottom of the kill ladder.
Anyone fancying a sample will get a chance to try out the new additions in a free demo which will feature the Outpost campaign level, plus a free Plaza multiplayer map, with solo, split screen and Live co-op modes all supported. No word on pricing quite yet, but the demo debut should be fairly imminent, so keep an eye on Live for its arrival.
