March 2nd, 2006, 18:05 Posted By: wraggster
Earlier this week, the game industry was rocked by word of the so-called Origami Project, a secret Microsoft device that appears to be a portable PC with gaming functionality. The rampant speculation was kick-started by a leaked video showing what looked like a mini-tablet PC running Halo. Microsoft confirmed the Origami Project video's authenticity to GameSpot, but said it was a year-old "concept video," and hinted the Halo footage was for demonstration purposes only.
Then, after promising revelations today on the teaser site origamiproject.com, Microsoft merely posted a new flash movie … which makes promises of more information to come. After asking, "Wondering where to find me?" the movie shows a montage of locations: a city skyline, tropical island, a snow-capped mountain, a subway system, the interior of a car, and a long shot of Rio de Janeiro. "I am everywhere you are … but never in the way" the site tells visitors via text, apparent promising a new level of portability in the device.
Then comes the tease. After posing the rhetorical question, "Who am I?", the site says, "find out … 3.9.06…" Now it seems the public will have to wait another week for the official Origami unveiling, which appears to be coordinated with the CeBit PC trade expo, held from March 9 to 15 in Germany.
However, unofficial reports have already broken about what the Origami can and cannot do. This morning, the Associated Press ran an article citing a source inside Microsoft which confirms suspicions that the Origami is merely a new line of "ultra-mobile PCs" the size of a paperback book. It says that the line of devices is aimed at "tech-savvy consumers who want a smaller computer that is easy to take on vacation, in the subway or anywhere else where a full-sized PC would seem too bulky." As shown in the leaked video, Origami machines will feature a touch-sensitive screen a la Microsoft's tablet PC line, will run Windows XP, and will be priced lower than most full-size laptops, running from around $500 to $1000.
If that price tag seems too low for a mobile PC with a high-end graphics chip--which would be necessary to run the Halo footage shown in the leaked concept video--that's because it is. The AP article says flat-out that the Origami is "not a portable version of Microsoft’s Xbox videogame console," nor is it "a music player designed to take on Apple Computer Inc.’s mega-popular iPod." According to the source, the Origami will be "less powerful than full-fledged PCs," and won't have "advanced entertainment capabilities."
However, the AP article contradicts itself somewhat, quoting its source as saying that Microsoft expects consumers to use the Origami for "watching movies," presumably on DVD. That means that the device could have enough processing and graphics power to play older PC games that don't require a high-end GPU--think Civilization III on the go. It also raises the possibility that Microsoft is optimizing less demanding versions of semi-recent PC games specifically for the platform, as is now rumored. However, Microsoft reps had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Xport released a new version of NeoGenesis a Sega Genesis/Megadrive/32X/SegaCD/MegaCD emulator for Xbox.
What's new:
* GUI brought up to date with most recent
* Removed "Fix Screen Tearing" configuration option since it is no longer being used
* Added option to manually disable SRAM to fix games like Puggsy
* CDDA plays within BIN files now. You must have a proper CUE file for the BIN and it must be named the same as the BIN file. (e.g. MY_SEGA_CD_GAME.BIN and MY_SEGA_CD_GAME.CUE ) Load the CUE file - not the BIN file.
* BIN files that are actually ROM images and not SegaCD images should correctly load as cartridges now.
* Added Reset to in-game menu and also as a configurable button
* All settings will be reset to a baseline when you start this version. This will remove the default mapping of BLACK to the screenshot button and will also default the Left Analog stick to act like the DPAD during gameplay. However, any games you have previously played will have their button configurations loaded from the previously saved config file and will override the new defaults.

First next-gen version of EA and Criterion's asphalt-mayhem racer is off to production, due in stores March 7.
To date, there are three racing games available for the Xbox 360: Need for Speed Most Wanted, Project Gotham Racing 3, and Ridge Racer 6. However, the fourth racing game for the console is generating a lot of interest, despite being already available--and highly acclaimed--on the Xbox and PlayStation 2. That game would be Burnout Revenge, the first next-gen installment in the high-intensity racing series from publisher Electronic Arts and developer Criterion Games, which went gold today.
Like its current-gen versions, the Xbox 360 Burnout Revenge will let players engage in a series of high-speed racing events laced with wanton destruction. However, the game has been given a visual upgrade, with car models rebuilt specifically to take advantage of the 360's high-definition graphics capabilities, and also features enhanced sound effects. It will also sport an impressive range of 36 achievements, including many that can be earned only via impressive feats on Xbox Live. Online play is also amped up by the game's "Live Revenge" mode, which helps foster online rivalries with opponents on Microsoft's game service.

Source Gamesindustry.Biz:
Electronic Arts has secured the rights to produce a tie-in for this year's FIFA World Cup event in Germany, with games for current and next-generation platforms slated for a release this April.
2006 FIFA World Cup will feature nearly 100 of the world's favourite footballers, all specially animated to capture their playing styles. Players will be able to choose from 127 national teams, and play in matches in the 12 official stadiums where the tournament is being held as well as stadiums from each qualifying region.
Modes will include Global Challenge, which recreates classic moments from World Cups past, plus a multiplayer mode for up to eight players. The game will also feature unlockable content, such as legendary players and exclusive sportswear.
“The FIFA World Cup will be the single most watched sporting event by a worldwide television audience, bringing together football fans from around the world,” said producer Joe Nickolls.
“Our game, 2006 FIFA World Cup, celebrates this passion by capturing all of the national rivalries in-game, enabling fans to play their heroes and be a part of 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany.”
2006 FIFA World Cup is in development at EA Canada, and will be released on PC, PS2, PSP, Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube, Nintendo DS, GBA and mobile phones in April.

Id's Todd Hollenshead says unnamed internal project will be released on three platforms; 360 to be new Wolfenstein's "primary platform."
Long considered one of the last bastions of hardcore PC gaming, id Software appears to have jumped on the next-gen console wagon with both feet. In an interview with Worthplaying, id CEO Todd Hollenshead said that the developer's next in-house project is being prepped for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, as well as the PC.
"We're looking at PS3, 360, and PC for our internal project," he told the site, "but it's too early to guess on whether we'll have all of those ready to go at the same time. It would be nice if it works out where the launch is simultaneous, but I don't know if that's feasible."
No release window for the unnamed game, which remains top secret, has been announced. However, Hollenshead said that it "is the main focus of the development team at id...I'm not sure when we'll begin discussing details of the new IP, but it will be the next game developed entirely by id, and it WILL be cool." (Emphasis in the original.)
As for other games based on id properties, Hollenshead told Worthplaying that the upcoming Return to Castle Wolfenstein game is being designed with the Xbox 360 foremost in mind. "The next Wolf[enstein] game is using the 360 as its primary development platform but will be released on the PC as well." Revealed at last year's X05 event, the game is currently in development at Raven Software, which developed Quake 4 for the Xbox 360 and the PC under id's supervision.
Hollenshead also said that id was pleased with the critically-drubbed film version of its best-selling Doom series. He also chimed in on what he thought the next id-inspired big-screen offering should be. "The next movie deal that I want to focus on is Wolfenstein," he said. "I think it could make a great film. It's been optioned previously, but now we have the rights back again. I'm hoping that once the game development gets some exposure that interest in Hollywood will perk up."

More details promised soon
Microsoft has confirmed its involvement with the 'Origami Project' video currently doing the rounds on the Internet, which shows a handheld tablet-style PC capable of browsing the web, editing photos and playing games.
"While Origami is a concept we've been working on with partners, the video you have seen is a year old and represents our initial exploration into this form factor, including possible uses and scenarios," said a Microsoft spokesperson.
"However, we are excited to share more details about the evolution of the Origami concept with you in the coming weeks."
It seems that further details could be forthcoming even sooner than that, however, juding by the Origami Project website - which hints that more will be revealed on March 2nd.
The video shows what looks like a portable tablet PC capable of a wide variety of functions, including gaming - in one scene, a user appears to be playing Halo. It first appeared on the website of film production company Digital Kitchen, which previously produced and advertising campaign for Microsoft-published Xbox title Jade Empire. It can still be seen via CreativeCoreMedia.com.
It seems unlikely, however, that Origami is actually a product which Microsoft will be manufacturing. The firm has been careful to describe it as a "concept" at all time, and to date Microsoft has been careful to stay out of the computer hardware business, with the Xbox consoles being the obvious exceptions to this rule.
What's more probable is that the firm is preparing a concept design, prototype and reference specification for an offshoot of the Tablet PC concept - a form of portable, media-focused system aimed squarely at the home market.
Widespread speculation has also suggested that the video may have been deliberately leaked by Microsoft as part of a viral marketing campaign designed to steal some of the thunder from a major announcement which has been scheduled by rival firm Apple later today.

February 28th, 2006, 20:41 Posted By: wraggster
Senior analyst P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research has stated that Microsoft's much publicised component shortages for the Xbox 360 are over, suggesting that the company is back on track to sell 10-12 million units worldwide by year-end.
According to McNealy's report, Microsoft is likely to shift 6 million consoles by June this year. The mid-year forecast eclipses Peter Moore's comments at the recent CES show in Las Vegas, in which the Xbox boss lowered initial sales estimates and offered a more conservative goal of 4 to5.5 million units by June.
Third party publishers, the majority of which have cited Xbox 360 supply issues as a contributory factor in lower than expected financial results, are likely to see a swift return to normality in McNealy's opinion. The analyst expects significant improvements in the quarter results.
The report included a survey of current Xbox 360 stock levels in 125 retailers which appears to somewhat contradict McNealy's optimistic forecast, revealing just 26 stores having units in stock - and all but five of those only having the Core system (minus hard drive and wireless accessories) available. Supply in the stores with units available was also extremely low, with most retailers holding a maximum of 3 units each.
UK supplies have definitely improved in recent weeks - a GameStation representative told GamesIndustry.biz that regular deliveries of both Core and Premium units are now beginning to materialise, and pre-launch orders are now all but fulfilled in the majority of stores UK-wide. That said, sales are going to have to spike pretty quickly if the Amtech estimates are to be achieved by June.
McNealy also offered some opinion on the availability of launch information for Sony's PS3, suggesting that this week's PlayStation Destination event could put an end to the intense rumour and speculation that has surrounded the industry for months.
"We expect Sony to give some directional information on the PS3 about launch plans and pricing, but we believe it is more likely that Sony will keep its commentary to a high level about the PS3 rather than specifics." the report stated. It is also suggested that more information could be provided at Sony's Blu-Ray address in California.

February 28th, 2006, 01:43 Posted By: wraggster
EA's much trumpeted "gun porn" first-person shooter hits the shelves this week, so we thought it'd be a good idea to compile the thoughts of a selection of reviews from the web. Overall, Game Rankings gives Black a good score of 79%, but does it live up to the hype?
IGN (87/100) by Chris Roper - this interview can be summed up by the statement that Black "is everything you'd ever want in a shooter if all you ever wanted to do was shoot stuff". In other words Black is the Serious Sam of the PS2/Xbox (read: irrelevant plot, limited replayabilty but with plenty of pretty guns, gore and explosions to stop you from caring).
EuroGamer (80/100) by Kristan Reed - this review plays the statistics game to point out the hectic nature of the game. By the end of Black, reviewer Kristan Reed had killed a total of 2758 enemies equating to one kill every ten seconds. This kill count wasn't easily earned; the A.I. in Black is pretty tough. Unfortunately the lack of a plot to explain why the hell you have to kill all these people lets the game down. That plus the absence of a multiplayer mode and the occasional slowdown due to unoptimized code (or the PS2's aging hardware) means that Black doesn't quite fall into the genre defining category.
1UP (70/100) by Garnett Lee - "Do you like to blow stuff up?" If you do, then Black is the game for you. According to this review, Black elevates shooting things/blowing things up to an almost artistic level. But if you're looking for more of a Half-Life style experience from your shooters, Black won't satisfy you - unless you have the ability to switch off your brain.

id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead told WorthPlaying.com that the next gen Wolfenstein will use the Xbox 360 as its "primary development platform", while Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will launch on the PC first. The two highly anticipated shooters will eventually be available on both platforms.
Hollenshead also talked about the rising costs of game development, the next QuakeCon, and why Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson won't be directing any id games in the near future. However, Todd might want to consider them for the Wolfenstein movie he wants to make. The interview refers to the "success of the DOOM movie", but they must have forgotten it only grossed $54 million worldwide (a $6 million loss, pre-DVD sales).

Event will only be open to US gamers
A Microsoft spokesperson has told GamesIndustry.biz that the promotional event which will allow Xbox 360 owners to try out online gaming for free will only be open to US gamers.
All Xbox 360 units come with a free Silver subscription, which allows owners to download games, demos and trailers from the Xbox Live Marketplace. In order to play games online, gamers must pay for a Gold subscription at a cost of either USD 7.99 per month or USD 49.99 per year.
The free trial event, which is tentatively scheduled to take place in April, will offer all Xbox Live Silver subscribers the same access as Xbox Live Gold users for 72 hours - providing they live in the States.

Xport released a new version of XBoyAdvance, a GBA/GBC/GB emulator for Xbox.
What's new:
* Reverted back to 1.7.2 core
* Implemented relevant portions of VBAsmooth code
* Delayed auto-load save states to avoid strange slowdown. Sometimes when the auto-loading of save states happened, the GBA emulation would be very very sluggish, like the timing is off. Seems the GBA emulation needs to "warm-up" for a second before loading the save state.

It looks like there may not be a free 72 hour weekend for Xbox 360 Live after all. The official Xbox web site's calendar of events showed on Thursday that there would be a free weekend of play starting April 1 (and sponsored by Verizon) but now that event has been removed from the calendar with no explanation.
