We were starting to wonder what had happened to the free Live weekends Microsoft promised with the launch of the Xbox 360. However, it now seems that the first freebie weekend has been penned in on the official Xbox website.
April 1 is the day that cheeky freeloaders can jump on to Xbox Live, without having to spend a penny on superior Gold membership. During the free weekend, Silver members will have their service extended, and for 72 hours will be able to play any of their favourite Xbox games online.
Non-paying Silver members normally have restricted access on Xbox Live, limited only to game and demo downloads from Xbox Live Marketplace. Gold membership, which costs $49.99 a year, extends to the more obvious function of actually being able to play games online.

BusinessWeek has an interview with Microsoft Game Studios' Shane Kim in which he discusses the second wave of Xbox 360 games. When asked if Halo 3 is coming out this year, the answer was: 'It depends. If it's the game that everyone is expecting then, yes. For us it's about making a proper impact on the platform. It has to be something with huge significance, so we won't be rushed.'" If you know what that means, I would like to offer you a cookie, because I sure as heck don't.

Criterion's Alex Ward has shot down speculation that an Xbox 360 version of BLACK will be made, following the news that the EA-published title (out tomorrow in Europe, 28th February in North America) will not be compatible with the new Microsoft games console.
"I keep reading all over forums that we're going to make a 360 version of BLACK, and it's just not true," Ward told Eurogamer this week.
And he gave us the first confirmation that the Guildford-based team is planning a next gen sequel when he said: "The only time you'll see [the BLACK franchise] on the Xbox 360 is when we make BLACK 2 on it in a few years."
Responding to the numerous conspiracy theories surrounding the lack of compatibility of Criterion's titles on Xbox, Ward insisted it has absolutely nothing to do with publishers or developers.
"We'd absolutely love it if our Burnout games worked on 360," said Ward, "but it's down to what Microsoft wants to do. It controls and decides what games its emulator works with. I've actually asked them four times myself for them to make it happen, but it's really not up to us.
"The fact that BLACK doesn't work on the 360 isn't us trying to make people wait for a 360 version... because that's not going to happen," he added.

A new countdown clock has appeared on the US Rainbow Six website - but just what is it counting down to?
Well, we reckon we've worked it out, since the clock started counting down at 360 hours. What's more, it will reach zero hour on March 6th, 2006 - that's written as 3/6/06 in American.
So, the answer is obvious - Sony's next-generation console also has a 3 in its title, so they must be announcing Rainbow Six for PS3! Or maybe the next instalment in the series will be called Rainbow Three Sixty! Or maybe they're doing an Xbox 360 version who knows.
Ubisoft declined to comment, stating only that we can expect "More news to follow." Guess we'll just have to keep wracking our brains until March 6th, then.

Xport has released a new version of XBoyAdvance a GBA/GBC/GB/SGB/SGB2 emulator for Xbox.
What's new:
* Updated to v1.8.0b sources
* GUI brought up to date with any missing features
* Much more robust mp3 playlist features
* People who cannot display 480i should be able to see something now
* 480p, 720p should work fine now
* Previously, all save state files, config files, sram files were stored in one directory. Now each game gets its own directory. This will allow for 4096 games. 4096 is the maximum number of files/subdirectories that can exist in one directory on the XBox. Existing files are moved automatically.
* Fixed bug with ISO9660 DVD images where information could not be read past the first 2GB of data on the disc. The directory would be displayed fine, but when you selected a game that existed past the first half of the disc, it would fail.
* Video lines shifted up to fix problem with lines getting cut off on the bottom.
* Fixed white strip in upper left corner when emulator plays first game.
* New option to autoload the last game you played upon launching the emulator. Find it on the second page of Configuration-]General
* When you change the save type for GBA, the SRAM file will automatically be deleted. Previously, if you did not delete the save file if one was already created, it would get read in which caused problems. This is useful for when you select the wrong initial SRAM type for certain games (like Dragon Ball Z).
* Added locked-aspect-ratio mode when resizing the game screen
* Implemented a few misc GBA bugfixes from various other sources

Gael360 released an update of wxHdd(info) (a tool to read the Xbox 360 HDD on PC) and wxPirs (to tool to open Generic Xbox 360 Container files).
What's new/fixed on wxHdd since v1.0 (translated from french):
* Experimental support for memory cards (v1.0.1)
* Fixed some bugs (v1.0.1)
* Handling fragmentation of disc (v1.2)
* Opening of several partitions (v1.2)
* Extracting directories (v1.2)
* Instant/Direct opening of files (v1.2)
* Note: wxHdd does not have a feature to 'add files' (write on HD/Image) yet.
Gael360 also released a new tool called wxPirs v1.1:
This tool will allow you to open files of the following types: PIRS, LIVE or CON, which are generic container files on the Xbox360.
More info about this format is available on free60.org.
These 3 formats are identical, the only difference are the first 4 characters of the file (PIRS/LIVE/CON), which is where their names come from, and what they are used for:
* PIRS: used to store themes or gamertags for example
* LIVE: used to store content downloaded from Xbox LIVE
* CON: these are a bit special, they are the only ones of this format that are create by the Xbox 360 itself. They are used to store saved games.
v1.1 comes with some bug fixes.

Based on time spent connected to Xbox Live, here are the Top 10 games for Microsoft's online service. Results taken from the week ending February 11, 2006:
Halo 2
Call of Duty 2
Perfect Dark Zero
DEAD OR ALIVE 4
PGR3
Need for Speed™ Most Wanted
Battlefield 2: MC
Madden NFL 06
Geometry Wars Evolved
NBA 2K6
Staying consistent with previously released stats, "little games that could" still find spots on the list. Some three months after its launch release, Geometry Wars is on the list at number nine. Astounding.

+ T + released a bugfix release of FBA-xxx Pro
I've just had it confirmed that the decrypted M ROMs added to the v1.08 build were not publicly available dumps. It seems I was misinformed and therefore have released this fixed build which restores these ROMs to their previous CRCs.
Apologies for any confusion this mistake may have caused.

One of the first questions I get when someone hears I work on Xbox is "So, what operating system do you guys use? Windows 2000, right?" I am honestly not sure where the Win2K misperception comes from, but Xbox runs a custom operating system built from the ground up. While our operating system exports many of the same APIs found in Win32 (e.g. CreateThread or WaitForSingleObject), not everything is there. For instance, there is no use for CreateWindow on Xbox - all graphics are done through (our own flavor of) Direct3D.
There are a number of reasons both Xbox and 360 have their own OS. First, it gives Xbox a chance to own its own destiny in terms of architecture. When you have your own operating system, it's easy to go in and change things. Second comes performance. There isn't much of a hardware abstraction layer on Xbox - most stuff talks almost directly to hardware. This eliminates a lot of software overhead you might find on a PC. Third is security. With our own operating system, it also becomes a lot easier to design & implement our own security architecture. As the community is finding out, there is a lot of custom stuff.
The operating system is more than just the kernel. On Windows, you have critical components such as EXPLORER.EXE, shlwapi.dll, user32.dll, and others that are required for your system to function. On Xbox 360, we have similarly critical components. When you see a required system update from Xbox Live, we are mostly updating these critical components with fixes as well as new features.

Xplorer360 v0.9 Beta 3.1
So it seems when we compiled Xplorer360 Beta 3 we left out the search for XBOX1 HDD as a Physical Device! Download Link has been updated with that little problem fixed.
* AngerWound Needs an XBox 360 for Xplorer360 Development!
Well, as you can see from the title above. Neither of the developers of Xplorer360 currently own an Xbox 360 to your amazement! Everything was written based on dumps, and then ported over to use actual devices.
This is why we unleashed Xplorer360 so early, to get some real testing done! However, we'd like to be able to test things on our own hardware before putting the public at risk with possible bugs. If you enjoy the software, please help us out any way you can by donating your spare change via the link on the left of 360gamesaves.com.

Ross Rubin, an analyst with NPD Techworld, has an interesting theory in his latest weekly Engadget column. It goes something like this: Microsoft's adoption of HD-DVD was intended to increase the viability of the less-popular format and, in turn, be a foil to Sony's Blu-Ray format. The goal was never to emerge victorious but to weaken Blu-Ray, muddying the possibility of any dominant next-gen optical format. Why? Rubin's fictional "Disc Bloat" informant spills his guts:
"Simple. Microsoft really has nothing to gain from either format winning. Just listen to any of Gates' recent interviews and how he talks about discs as a necessary evil until the world is ready for media-free distribution. That said, Microsoft has much to gain from both formats losing. Think back to the format war between DVD-Audio and SACD. Both formats lost and it was a computer company that stepped in to become the new center of the digital music universe."
Like Apple's dominance in digital music, Microsoft wants to sell you things like portable media centers running their software, or Xbox 360s with the capability to HD movies-on-demand. In his recent Engadget interview Gates said, "In terms of movies, I often say that this is the last format battle there will ever be, because everything is going to go online -- you're going to download it."
Until the great format battle of 2008 when competing holographic storage manufacturers vie for interplanetary dominance.

News from Lik Sang
During last year's MTV special where Microsoft revealed the 360 to the world, a webcam was also on display next to the console. Little more was shown of it since then though, but this week Computer and Videogames reported several developers have recently been shown it up and running.
Back at the last E3 show Microsoft said they aim to release the camera within the first quarter of 2006, and with March coming up fast, an official announcement is expected soon. Meanwhile speculation continues, and some believe the camera has over gone a make over since its last appearance, and could look like the second image at the right.
One unnamed developer told CVG how impressed they were by the technology, despite only being shown video chat over Xbox Live and not actual Eye Toy style games. In addition to chatting while playing games, using Xbox Live Arcade, listening to music or watching movies, users will be able to slap their faces on leader boards, and with supported titles, take customization a level further by putting their ugly mug on a character.
I for one wouldn't mind seeing if those girls I fight side by side with in MMORPG's are really just that. But back when the camera was first announced, the guys at Penny-Arcade had a different take on what the camera may unleash...
