The Xbox 360 is to be relaunched in Japan in late June in response to weak sales of the console, according to a report today which cites sources at Japanese wholesalers and indicates that an announcement of the relaunch could come next week.
The report, which was published by German website GameFront, suggests that a press conference being held next week by Microsoft in Japan will be the venue for the announcement of this major change in strategy for the firm.
June 29th is fingered as the date of the relaunch, which coincides with the changed release date for a number of major titles - Sega's Chrome Hounds, Idea Factory's Spectral Force 3: Innocent Rage, AQ Interactive's Bullet Witch, and Ubisoft's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.
It's not yet clear what form the relaunch might take - whether it will see the console's pricing or bundles being changed, or if it will simply be a new marketing campaign focused on the locally relevant software available for the system.
Japan was the only territory where the Xbox 360 did not sell out at launch, despite having a smaller allocation than any other market, and in fact the launch underperformed by comparison with the launch of the original Xbox - itself hardly a stellar success story in the region.
The console is currently selling somewhere over a thousand units per week - around the same kind of volumes as are being shifted by the GameCube.
As well as the four titles mentioned above, Microsoft will also be hoping to stimulate interest in the console with the imminent releases of Rumble Roses and Ninety-Nine Nights, both of which are due to arrive in the next month

It's not often an RTS makes the transition from PC to console, and it's an even rarer occasion when a strategy game makes the leap successfully. EA games is attempting to bridge the gap between the two platforms, with an Xbox 360 port of their stellar Lord of the Rings RTS The Battle for Middle-Earth II.
Take a look at these latest console screenshots and you can see that - at least visually - little has been lost in the transition from PC to Xbox 360. While the console port is looking spectacular, we can only hope that EA manages to conjure up a control scheme good enough to perform the abundance of clicking and unit management, without throwing the Xbox 360 out the window in frustration. Early reports suggest they've succeeded admirably, but it's only when we get a chance to put hands on code, we'll be able to tell you for sure.
Still The Battle for Middle-Earth II marches on to Xbox 360 in June, so we shouldn't have too long to wait to find out.

Agent 47's first foray into the world of next-gen assassination will be in Hitman: Blood Money on Microsoft's Xbox 360, IGN is reporting.
According to the website, the 360 version of the game will release this year, IGN actually saying it believes it will launch simultaneously alongside PC, Xbox and PS2 versions of Blood Money in May. It further claims that an "independent source close to the English publisher [Eidos]" has let slip that the next-gen version will feature identical content and plot to the other platform versions of the game but will benefit from an additional layer of visual gloss - improved graphics, special effects and lighting.
We put in a call to Eidos and queried a spokesperson on the existence of Hitman: Blood Money on Xbox 360, but all we received in reply was "No comment". If we hear anything more on this, we'll let you know.
Meanwhile, Eidos has released a new Hitman: Blood Money trailer (NOT showing Xbox 360 footage) which we've uploaded here for your viewing pleasure. The trailer carries the title 'Gaining Access To Your Target' and, according to the publisher, "shows some of the new moves that Agent 47 has at his disposal which allows him to reach locations that were thought to be unreachable. A good assassin always finds a way to gain access to his/her target no matter how well protected."

March 31st, 2006, 17:31 Posted By: wraggster
The Xbox 360 is starting to build speed this month with the arrival of some truly spectacular titles and further marketplace releases championing the bustling Live service. There's still one important piece of the x-shaped puzzle to land though, and it's a next-gen appearance of the hugely anticipated third instalment of Halo.
The latest rumours to trickle from the internet suggest that it could be a little while yet before the Mater Chief triumphantly arrives on the Xbox 360. Citing a duo of anonymous sources, IGN claims that it'll be March 2007 before we get our hands on the next-generation Halo, further cementing Microsoft's comments that they won't be rushing Master Chief's 360 opus out the door.
If true, we're sure Halo 3's slip to next year will disappoint more than a few Halo fanatics, but with massive titles like Gears of War and Mass Effect landing this year, Xbox 360 owners have plenty to look forward to in 2006.
On the flip side, some stern-business types might suggest that a little nudge to get the Chief blasting on Xbox 360 this year might be a very sound idea. With both the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Revolution hitting stores this year, Microsoft could do with all the firepower it can get to combat the arriving next-gen competition, and Halo 3 would no-doubt be a silver bullet against even the most colossal of console launches.
We have to wonder if the mooted 2007 date has anything to do with the forthcoming Halo movie, which is scheduled for summer 2007. Could we see a launch alongside the Halo flick? it'd certainly be a big double whammy.
With the year swiftly progressing and still no sign of Bungie's next-gen epic, we think it's likely that Microsoft is indeed eyeing a 2007 release for Halo's next-gen reprisal. However, expect to see at the very least a sneak peak at the game at this year's E3 show, where Microsoft again needs to sway attention away from the other next-gen revelations.
We will of course keep you informed on even the smallest of Halo 3 developments.

Microsoft has made a minor update to the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility list, adding patches to allow three new titles to run on the new console - namely Black, Star Wars Battlefront II, and Winning Eleven 9.
The update, which is the first change to the list of backwards compatible titles in several months, also fixes issues with a number of games which previously worked with the Xbox 360 but had bugs in the compatibility code, including Ninja Gaiden, Fable, Half-Life 2 and GTA San Andreas.
Details of the new update were posted on the popular blog of Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hyrb (better known by his GamerTag, Major Nelson), and the update appears to apply to European users as well as US users, according to comments left on the blog.
As with all previous backwards compatibility patches, users can download these new updates by putting the Xbox game that requires them into the Xbox 360 drive while connected to Xbox Live. They can also be downloaded to a PC from the Xbox.com website and transferred to the Xbox 360 on a CD-R.
Although only a small number of games have been added to the list with this update, Microsoft's stated goal is to eventually have every Xbox game working on the Xbox 360 - although at this rate of progress, it looks like it could take a long time for that objective to be met.

Microsoft's Xbox wing in Japan today invited many media outlets, including SPOnG, to a major briefing dated for April 6th next week, with those close to proceedings hinting that some major announcements are planned. Indeed, those close to planning have openly mooted Phantasy Star Universe from Sega and a new Tales of title from Namco will headline the event.
Microsoft has suffered terribly in the Japanese market, with consumers again rejecting Microsoft's courtship dance, seeing its revised offering go unsold. The situation has been compounded by the fact that the Xbox 360 was in part designed to appeal to a consumer base renowned as being the most discerning on the planet. Indeed, Microsoft openly touted its refreshed credibility in the Japanese market prior to launching its hardware and in fairness it had covered every base except the inherent xenophobia of its target market.
As to what else Microsoft may show is up in the air, though a new Square Enix exclusive has been mentioned in some circles, as have various Sega arcade conversions including Virtua Fighter and Afterburner. Other titles mooted include Konami's Winning Eleven as well as various Xbox Live Arcade titles...
Whatever happens, it's going to be big, and attractive to our Japanese gaming friends. As to whether they'll buy an Xbox 360 to play what is offered is anyone's guess.

March 29th, 2006, 18:02 Posted By: wraggster
Back in December, Japanese publiser AQ Interactive announced its support for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and revealed it had three games in development for the console. Just a few months later, the studio has revealed that one of the titles will be in Japanese stores this summer.
According to retail sources in Japan, AQ's Bullet Witch has been scheduled for release in Japan on June 29. The action adventure title is being developed by Cavia, which is best known as the studio behind Square Enix's Drakengard series.
Bullet Witch takes place in an exceedingly bleak near future in the year 2013. Civilization is on the brink of extinction after demons begin appearing on Earth, and the player wades into the fray as a witch named Alicia. Equipped with a broom-shaped gun, players will try to take down the demons and save mankind. Using Xbox Live, players will be able to download additional stages and special costumes.
The monsters in Bullet Witch have been designed by artist Yasushi Nirasawa, who has previously contributed his talents to many movies including Godzilla: Final Wars (2004), Hellboy (2004), and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001).
In addition to Bullet Witch, AQ Interactive has two other projects in development for the Xbox 360: Cry On and Vampire Rain.

Microsoft's integration of its consoles and the Web took another step today, with the announcement of friends management on My Xbox, the online community based around the Xbox and Xbox 360. The addition is "only a portion of what we've got up our sleeves," says My Xbox lead program manager Clinton Fowler.
Beginning today, whether gamers wish to add a player they rumbled with in Halo 2 the night before to their friends list or kick off some noob that was clinging on to their roster of buddies, they won't have to wait until they fire up their Xboxes or Xbox 360s. Friend requests can now be sent, accepted, or declined over the Internet through Xbox.com, and existing friends can be removed from lists.
"I can't tell you how long we've wanted to do this feature, and it's finally here," Clinton beamed in a post on Xbox.com. "You don't have to look at those pending friend requests anymore, and you also don't have to wait 'til you get to the console to send a friend request to that guy or gal in the forums!"
For more information or to sign up for a free My Xbox account, head over to Xbox.com.

March 29th, 2006, 17:53 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's Xbox 360 has racked up the best debut ever for a console platform in Australia, with over 30,000 units of the system selling through in the four days following its March 23rd launch.
That's according to figures from market analyst GfK, which reports that around 10,000 consoles sold at the midnight launch on March 23rd, followed by an additional 20,000 units in the following days.
The totals put the Xbox 360 at the top of the launch sales league table in the region - the former record holder was Sony's PlayStation Portable, which sold through 27,000 units in a comparable period of time.
However, it's not clear whether all of the pre-orders taken for the Xbox 360 in Australia have yet been met - Microsoft's Xbox chief in the region, David McLean, had previously told local publication AustralianIT that pre-orders were running at around 45,000 units.
Commenting to the site in the wake of the launch figures being revealed by GfK, he said merely that the firm would "easily reach our launch window forecast."
GfK also revealed that a tie ratio of around 2.6 games per console has been seen in the early days of the launch; while McLean confirmed that the full Xbox 360 pack (as distinct from the hard drive lacking Core System) accounted for the bulk of sales.
The Xbox 360 launched in the other major global territories of North America, Europe and Japan before Christmas, but experienced massive shortages in the wake of the launches which are only now reaching a resolution.
Despite Microsoft's claims of a worldwide global launch, the Australian launch comes almost four months after other English-speaking territories got their hands on the console - so gamers in the territory are likely to have been relieved when Sony's Phil Harrison, on stage at GDC last week, told the audience that Australia was included in the firm's plans for a global launch in November 2006 for PS3.

Microsoft has released a new set of stats for Xbox Live which reveal that gamers have spent more than 1.5 billion hours online since the service launched in November 2002.
More than 500 million hours were spent playing Halo 2, the hit first-person shooter for the original Xbox. However, according to Microsoft, Xbox Live has proved even more popular with Xbox 360 owners - more than half are connected to the service, compared to just one in ten Xbox owners.
On average, gamers play online 25 times per week, compared to just six times on the original Xbox. The most popular Xbox 360 game is Call of Duty 2, followed by Perfect Dark Zero and Project Gotham Racing 3. Need for Speed: Most Wanted is in fourth place, with Dead or Alive 4 in fifth.
Around 60 per cent of Xbox Live account holders have used the Xbox Live Arcade, and more than 3 million games have been downloaded. On average, 20 per cent of free trials result in a purchase of the full game.
Geometry Wars is the most popular Xbox Live Arcade game, with just under 40 per cent of those who downloaded the demo purchasing the full title. Marble Blast Ultra and Gauntlet are the second and third most popular titles respectively, followed by Smash TV and Zuma.
More than half of all Xbox Live users have downloaded game demos, while 85 per cent have downloaded Marketplace content and 20 per cent have used Microsoft Points to make purchases. Around 25 per cent have downloaded music videos and film trailers.

News from Lik Sang
Konami knows the lure of lush ladies in a fighting game, so that over a year ago the publisher already tried their hands at an all-female wrestler with Rumble Roses. Now the sequel has hit the Xbox 360, everything from the bold entrances to the scantly clad costumes and bone crushing gameplay is here in full high def glory. With Xbox Live you can also go online and team up with another beauty in the all-new Tag Team and Elimination modes, or compete in a free-for-all Battle Royal. There's more than 40 different vixens to choose from, and team dynamics are affected by each girl's attitude towards one another. Each wrestler's popularity with the crowd will rise or fall too, based on her fighting style and match results. Earn enough popularity and become a "superstar" with a new entrance sequence and upgraded moves. While fighting your way through your character's abilities will slowly evolve also, and depending on how you fight, your attacks may grow more powerful; your walking may become quicker, etc.
Beyond unlockable costumes, character editing goes into impressive detail, including everything you'd expect and a few you wouldn't, like muscle tone and breast size. When you're not fighting online, you can also upload and download images from your character photo shoots. Further game modes include a Queen's Match where the looser embarrasses herself in a Penalty Game where you not only get to choose what acts your opponent performs, but what they wear while doing it! Then there's the Handicap Match where a submission or pin fall by either partner ends the fight, a Pure Humiliation Match that can only be ended by an H-move, or a classic old school style Street Fight. With more in-depth gameplay than the first title, Rumble Roses XX has breasts, brains and balls all in one. Developed in conjunction with Yuke's Entertainment, famous for the SmackDown series, the US edition is in stock now, while the Japanese version is also coming up this Thursday.
