CNET.com.au has just posted an interview with Microsoft Game Studio head Shane Kim. The head games exec for the Xbox 360 admits he wants the console to be more family friendly (read: more like Nintendo and Sony). From the article: 'The positioning of the platform is very different now. We were so paranoid that people knew the Xbox was a hardcore gaming machine in the first generation that we really alienated, or closed off, a lot of our opportunity.

SEGA's announced that Phantasy Star Universe will be released on Xbox 360 this autumn along with previously announced PlayStation 2 and PC versions.
PSU - no relation to the thing that makes your PC work - consists of a single-player adventure spanning multiple planets and Xbox Live-based multiplay.
"The reinvigoration of this beloved franchise on the Xbox 360 signifies another step for SEGA towards next-gen leadership," said SEGA's Scott A. Steinberg, implying that the 360 version will be pretty and everything.
Played online, the Xbox 360 version will allow you to group together with your friends (or Friends in this case), making a squad of up-to-six, and enter worlds where hundreds of other players are playing. Previous Phantasy Star Online games were limited to groups of four and nobody else. And obviously the old-days Phantasy Star stuff was single-player. So that's the whole history in a paragraph really.
Expect to see and hear more about PSU's Xbox 360 version at E3 next month.

Contract electronics manufacturing firm Winstron Corp has announced that it aims to boost its production of Xbox 360 consoles to 1 million units a month by the end of the year in order to meet Microsoft's requirements.
The Taiwanese firm, which also produces a variety of other computer products such as laptops and servers, is planning to expand its manufacturing facility for the Xbox 360 in the Chinese city of Zhongshan.
The Wall Street Journal reported the boosted output plans this week, citing Winstron chairman Simon Lining as stating that the increase to a million units per month was being undertaken "to fully support our customer" - namely Microsoft.
Winstron's boosted capacity is another indication that Microsoft is continuing to ramp up production of the Xbox 360, presumably in an attempt to capitalise on its one-year head start on Sony in the next generation console marketplace.
The greatly increased manufacturing capacity for the console will undoubtedly help to ensure that retail channels remain well-stocked over the coming months, but more importantly, may allow Microsoft to stockpile inventory for the holiday season.
That would mean that while the PlayStation 3 is likely to be in short demand around the world in November and December, there would be a plentiful supply of Xbox 360 hardware - giving Microsoft the chance to capitalise on the many consumers who will undoubtedly be disappointed in their efforts to buy one of Sony's new consoles.

Like a hedgehog in a tuxedo packing a Walther PPK and discussing thunderballs with the opposite sex while winking knowingly, RTS games on console aren't that common. Still, EA reckons there's gold to be found in them thar RTS-on-console hills, the company dipping into its Lord of the Rings license to march real-time strategy game sequel The Battle for Middle-earth 2 onto Xbox 360. Due June, new screenshots from the next-gen version of the follow-up have been released.
Will BFME2 on Xbox 360 will prove anything other than a small, smelly and vicious little Gollum that no one wants to touch with a 10-foot barge pole? Or will it make a supreme RTS sacrifice before falling into a lake of fire. Well, we'll know for sure in June.

What is best in life?
To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women. Oh, and playing Funco's massively multi-player Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures on your Xbox 360 wouldn't be so bad either. Gamespot's Rumor Control column tackles the likelyhood that Robert E. Howard's brawny hero will battle-axe his way on to our favorite console:
Like most MMORPGs, Age of Conan is PC-exclusive. However, that may change, according to a GAF poster. Said poster claims to have a friend who attended a question-and-answer session held by Funcom, the Norwegian developer of Age of Conan.
According to the poster, the Funcom developers "showed a trailer with a pretty intense draw distance apparantly [sic] as well as Conan himself wielding a morning star which seemed totally realistic in how the spiked ball would behave due to its weight and momentum." Then, "a question was asked about if they were thinking about other platforms than PC...then the spokesman [Bjorn Sundquist] made a kauf [sic] gesture saying *kauf*Xbox360*kauf*." (Emphasis added.)
Since John Milius' Nietsche-tinged Conan classic (starring the Governor of California) is probably my favorite movie of all time (I've seen it a hundred times—please don't mention the disgraceful sequel), I'm tempted to pray to Crom that this works out. Fortunately for purists and people who hate Ahnuld, Age of Conan is based not on the movie, but on the gritty, politically incorrect world created in the orginal pulp novels. And it's been gathering positive barbarian buzz for some time.
Gamespot tags the story as "bogus" because, as of right now, Age of Conan is still officially a PC product. But the lack of a publisher as the May PC release date nears means that Microsoft could step in with head-chopping Hyborian ease. We need an MMORPG on the 360 that doesn't have Final Fantasy in the title. Come on Microsoft—let us push the Wheel of Pain.

Preview from Shacknews:
Activision has held the X-Men video game license for years now, publishing some unexpected gems such as Raven's two X-Men Legends games along with some rather less memorable fare. After so many prior titles, it seems slightly odd that the latest X-Men licensing effort, a tie in with the upcoming film X-Men: The Last Stand, has been granted the singular moniker X-Men: The Official Game. Could Activision and developer Z-Axis be sending a message to gamers, suggesting that this is the definitive X-Men experience, the stick by which other X-Men games (video, board, or otherwise) will be measured? Is there perhaps some kind of seedy unauthorized X-Men game production black market, and Activision is sending a stern reminder to these renegade developers that only this is the true official game? Were the marketers just out of ideas?

Nes6502 released a port of the Zsnes Super Nintendo emulator to the Xbox.
Heres whats new:
This is a beta release. This is also ported from W.I.P. code and not the stable 1.42 release. Therefore, there are issues in this port that do not exist in 1.42. There are also new features not in 1.42. This comes with no warranty. I am not responsible for any damage this may do to your Xbox.
Features:
99% of all games run full speed with sound with or without filters
Core Features:
1) Full graphics emulation (stretched)
2) Full sound emulation
3) Player 1 input supported.
4) Rom browser with screenshot preview, background music, and sound effects
5) SRAM support
6) Zip file support
7) SNES file formats supported (smc, sfc, swc, fig, mgd, ufo, bin, 058, 078, 1, usa, eur, jap, jma)
Graphics Features:
8) On screen FPS display (white button enables/black button disables)
9) Software Filters (Super Eagle, 2xSai, Super 2xSai)
Known Issues:
1) Occasionally after exiting a game and starting another, the new game will not start. Exiting the game and restarting should fix the problem. I don't know if this is a problem with my port or ZSNES.
2) The rom browser does not scroll correctly with less than 17 games

Xbox 360 Orrery quest now available for download on Live; 150 Marketplace points gets new task, rewards.
For most Xbox 360 Oblivion diehards, the joy over the downloadable horse armor has probably worn out its welcome. Thankfully for them, Bethesda today has released the second download for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which adds even more content to the open-ended game.
As previously revealed, the Orrery features a new quest to help the Mages Guild repair a defiled Imperial Orrery. Gamers will attempt to return some valuable parts stolen by bandits when they intercepted an Imperial shipment. The quest also features new powers for characters "based on the phases of the moons."
The download's price comes as a relief to gamers, many of whom were dismayed at the cost of the horse armor download. At 150 Marketplace points ($1.88), the Orrery is 100 points cheaper than the equine protection, which went for $2.50.
According to the official PC Oblivion downloads page, the Orrery quest has not yet been released on that platform. The next announced download for Oblivion, The Wizard's Tower, has not yet been dated.

Games retailers have updated the release date for Gears of War to November this year, given that nothing regarding the release has been made public yet - could this be the big day?
EB Games / Gamestop are now listing the highly anticipated game with a November release date, right around the Playstation 3 launch.
While Microsoft have previously stated that they will carry on with their Xbox 360 release schedule regardless of when the PS3 launches, the coincidence is nonetheless noticeable.

An admin at XboxLiveAddicts, the "official forum" of THQ and Climax, reports company sources told him the demo for Moto GP '06 has been submitted to Microsoft and will be available for download May 15 (It will also be included on the May OXM disc). That explains why the motorcycle racer is nowhere to be found, despite an announcement on XBL that apparently jumped the gun.

2K Sports is still finalizing a solution to alleviate the freeze issue on Major League Baseball 2k6 for Xbox 360 that some of our consumers are experiencing. We should have a downloadable patch available once it has fully tested to first party compliance standards.
In the meantime, our dedicated 2K Sports QA team has tested and confirmed two work-around methods for those consumers who are experiencing the freeze issue:
1) Remove or disable the HDD
or,
2) Load three different Xbox 360 games to the main title screen of each game then load Major League Baseball 2K6 on Xbox 360. All three Xbox 360 games must be completely different before loading Major League Baseball 2K6.
While we realize that these measures may seem unconventional, our 2K Sports QA Team has tested both methods and both will remedy issues that are causing the Major League Baseball 2K6 freeze issue on the Xbox 360. Again, we truly apologize for any inconvenience to your playing experience.
Please stay tuned for more updates. Thank you for your attention.

News from Divineo UK
Keep your XBOX360 cool, and prolong its life with the cool Nyko Intercooler!
More info
Reduce the internal operating temperature of the 360 while prolonging the consoles lifespan. The Intercooler 360 is a snap on cooling attachment that easily connects to the Xbox 360 to significantly reduce the internal heat of the console. The Intercooler 360 provides increased air flow throughout the 360 which allows the internal circuitry to perform at cooler temperatures and last longer. No internal modification of the Xbox 360 is required. A pass through power connection utilizes the existing Xbox 360 power supply negating the need for an extra AC adaptor. The unit also powers on and off automatically with 360 and the intercoolers small size will fit in tight spaces like entertainment centers with your 360 displayed in either horizontal or vertical format.

Yup xboxexpert has applied water cooling to the CPU & GPU of his Xbox 360, its one way to solve the occasional bout of overheating I guess, using these parts:
* Thermaltake CL-W0042 Rhythm Home Theater DVD Style External Liquid Cooling System
* KOOLANCE GPU-180-L06 GPU Chipset Heatsink
* KOOLANCE GPU-180-H06 VGA CARD GPU WATERBLOCK 1/4" ID
* 10ft of 1/4" ID 3/8" OD PVC Clear Tubing
Its an interesting looking mod tohugh I'm unsure how many would want to cut their 360 open to do it so it will probably remain the preserve of those like xboxexpert for the time being. You'll find the full story of the mod complete with many pictures over in this Xbox-scene thread.

Runtime has released a new version of Transcode 360
I'm happy to announce the release of Transcode 360 Beta 3, the newest version of the XviD / DivX playback solution for Xbox 360 and Media Center Extender devices on Windows Media Center 2005. Once more this beta release is provided in advance of the final release to encourage community feedback and to help us better understand the areas we need to focus on.
New in this release:
After a lot of painstaking testing we believe we've addressed the aspect ratio issues that affected Beta 2, and for the most part AV sync, playback choppiness and a couple of issues that should make for easier installation (notably MPEG2 codec co-existance). Additionally, Beta 3 also features support for subtitles.
To enable the optimum transcoding solution T360 now supports multiple transcoding engines: ffmpeg, mencoder and Windows Media Encoder plug-ins are provided. As I mentioned in my previous post, mencoder has been selected as the best candidate for our solution as it offers us lots of flexibility supporting a staggering 299 codecs. It is this then that we will be primarily focused on supporting.
If you have a little programming experience you're welcome to create your own custom plug-in wrappers, or contribute to the project by improving on what we have. Full C# source code for the majority of the plug-ins is included as part of the distribution.
I'll be taking it a bit easy now at least for the rest of the holiday. That said, I'll pop into the forums over the next couple of days to provide answers to some of the frequently asked questions. The plan over the short term is to update the online documentation as its beginning to look a bit dated.
Finally I would like to thank my team of testers who've been working with me to iron out the bugs, as well as you the community for your support and generous donations. Many thanks! Happy downloading!
