One of the games that may have slipped under the radar for the Xbox 360 is Tetris: The Grand Master Ace. The game was a Japanese launch title and is currently not available in North America. That's not to stop the game from being a nice little puzzle that's gotten a good import user review via GameSpot. From the review: "Tetris: The Grand Master Ace is a great little game, with a nicely thought out online mode, which encourages having fun with others even if your not playing versus. Trying to unlock the achievements add to the addictiveness of a game which already was very hard to put down."
Combine the classic gameplay of Tetris with Xbox Live? I'm in. Now if we can only get a US port.

If you are one suffering from Xbox 360 overheating problems, a third-party liquid cooling manufacturer might have a solution. Cool It Systems originally getting it's start in liquid PC cooling units now has a cooling module that attaches to the side of an Xbox 360. Hexus.gaming writes: "Steering clear of jokes about overheating power supplies, one company is claiming to have constructed a watercooling kit for the XBox 360. Pictures of the product, are seemingly attached to an XBox 360, though how it works and how it is installed remains something of a mystery."
The product still can't be found on the company's official website, and there is no word on how much the product will cost upon release. This could be proof that one man's weakness (even if only a small percentage) is another man's profit.

The Wall Street Journal posted a good flash up showing a good comparison between the new home video game consoles. Covering the Xbox 360, the Playstation 3 and the Revolution, this article goes in depth to speak about market shares and base unit installations.
With the launch of Microsoft's Xbox 360 in 2005, Sony the current market leader, and Nintendo will both follow in 2006 there is sure to be fierce competition. All consoles promise amazing graphics, high fidelity audio, wireless networking support and a focus on multiplayer games. This year alone gamers are expected to spend approximately $12.8 billion on hardware and $19.3 billion on software according to Wedbush Morgan Securities.
Current Installed Base
Microsoft Xbox - 24 million
Nintendo Gamecube - 21.5 million
Sony PS2 - 83.2 million
Microsoft Xbox 360
Pointing out that Microsoft's initial push to release their product was a important jump on the competition. Microsoft Expects to sell around three million units within the first 90 days of launch. However they have less games then were hoped for. In addition where was Halo for Xbox360? This game would obviously put more Xbox 360's in the hands of gamers, looking at original Halo sales. Had it not been for lack of consoles for sale however the disparity in price was no help either. Seeing Xbox 360's being sold from the $299 base price up to $1500 or more, including rather sleezy business tactics by Best Buy.
Sony Playstation 3
Master of the Market, Sony has consumed the video game market for the last two generations of video game consoles. Selling 150+ million Playstation consoles and holding relationships with many top video game console developers. Sonys new system boasts a DVD Drive that supports Blu-ray format, providing 54GB (11 1/2 times as much storage as a typical DVD-R) However this time could be tougher for Sony seeing 'Microsoft's aggressive push and their deep pockets'.
Nintendo Revolution
Responding to the Nintendo's new sleek design, they said that despite that the console 'lacks a hard drive or built in DVD player, it is expected to be priced lower then its rivals.' With the addition of Nintendo's virtual console, Revolution owners might be playing Mario Brothers and Chrono Trigger on their new consoles legally! While bringing so much history that is based on years of solid games, the Revolution does throw one interesting curve, the controller. While their will obviously be other controller options 'some analysts worry the unusual device may confuse and scare of some gamers', other controller possibilities (such as an original Nintendo controller) were announced during a press conference.

Though the results for the entire year aren't quite in yet, Nintendo's DS seems to be the big winner in terms of hardware sales for 2005. The system sold around 598,000 units in Japan last week alone, bringing its year-to-date total up to 3.7 million and its life-to-date number up to 5.2 million. This means that the DS is beating the PSP almost 3 to 1 in that territory, with the PSP racking up 161,000 sales for the week and almost 2.1 million in its liftime. By comparison, even the Playstation 2 only sold 97,000 for the week and 1.8 million for the year, though the system has had a much longer lifespan and an overall greater install base of 11.3 million Japanese units.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Xbox 360 is off to a much more sluggish start in Japan than it was in the U.S. Analysts estimate that as many as 800,000 360s have been sold in the U.S., while Media Create indicates that since the console's December 10 launch in Japan, the next-gen system has moved only 58,000 systems, 5,600 of which were sold in the week ending December 25.

Overheating overschmeating is what Cool IT Systems has to say about the Xbox 360. From day one of the Xbox 360 release there have been complaints and issues that ultimately go back to overheating, so Cool IT has done something about this by installing a water cooling system in an Xbox 360 to be unveiled at CES 2006. Expect some very pictorial coverage of this next week from CES 2006.

Microsoft will likely ship 1.2 million Xbox 360s worldwide -- and just 700,000 to 800,000 in the U.S. -- by the end of the holiday quarter, said Thomas Weisel analyst Tim Klasell in a report issued on Wednesday, which cited media reports and conversations with retailers. In contrast, Klasell had earlier predicted that Microsoft would ship 2 million of the devices by the end of the year.
While the console launched to much fanfare, it is well known that Microsoft's ambitious global launch plans constrained supplies, leaving inventory thin at retail and gamers clamoring for limited shipments, he said in his report.
A Microsoft representative did not return a call seeking comment.
The software giant will still probably hit its target of shipping 2.75 million to 3 million Xbox 360s within 90 days of the device's launch last month, Klasell said, predicting that Microsoft would ship 1.6 million devices in the first quarter of 2006. But the company is likely to ship the bulk of those systems toward the end of the quarter, he said.

Nissan and Microsoft have partnered to show that they can deliver as much impotent grandeur as any other auto/software maker duo.
The vendors this week announced that they will unveil the first "fully integrated gaming system within a vehicle."
At this point, you're probably thinking, "Come on, we've all seen a Playstation packed Escalade." And that's true enough.
What you probably haven't seen is a car that is the video game console.
"Conceived by Nissan Design America Inc. (NDA) and equipped with the Xbox 360 next-generation video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the Nissan URGE concept car allows drivers (while parked) to play 'Project Gotham Racing 3' using the car's own steering wheel, gas pedal and brake pedal while viewing the game on a flip-down seven-inch LCD screen," Nissan and Microsoft said in a statement.
This experiment highlights the nature of concept cars. You'll often find technology that you would love to see in real cars and then feel saddened that it never arrives. At the same time, you're often horrified at what companies will waste their time developing.
Apparently, however, we're not in the demographic that comprehends the genius at hand. Only the echo boomers get it.
"Nissan conducted an Internet survey of 2,000 echo boomers, a majority of which said technology and gaming are among the most important attributes in their first car," said Bruce Campbell, vice president of design at Nissan Design America.
You're no doubt sharing in the same, beautiful vision of thousands of plump teenagers slumped over their steering wheels in parking lots or virtually surfing while parked near a beach.
"The URGE concept car is equipped with the award-winning 'PGR 3,' which allows drivers to control a breathtaking trip through the streets of five photo-realistic locations: New York City, London, Las Vegas, Tokyo and the Nurburgring test track in Germany," Nissan said. 'PGR 3' drivers view and play the game on a flip-down LCD screen, which doubles as a rear-view mirror when the car is being used for real driving.
"They control the action using the Nissan URGE's race-inspired steering wheel, gas pedal and brake pedal. A Nissan URGE driver can, for example, maneuver through the streets of New York, park the car and fire up the Xbox 360, then virtually race through the same streets using the same steering wheel, gas pedal and brake pedal -- blurring fantasy and reality in a way that the automotive world has never before seen."
The URGE car with Microsoft on board will be displayed for the first time on Jan. 9 at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

December 29th, 2005, 12:28 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft broke stance and decided to formally back HD DVD in September of this year, citing a number of reasons. Now the EE Times is reporting that the company may attempt to leverage its OS dominance to push HD DVD penetration in the PC market.
Several industry sources last week told EE Times that Microsoft is muscling into the optical-disk fray by leveraging its operating-system clout to bundle HD-DVD within Vista, the company's next-generation OS. There is also talk that the software giant may be planning to offer cash incentives -- in the form "coupons" -- to system vendors or retailers if they agree to support HD-DVD. Such coupons would provide "credits" or "memos" for each PC that is sold with HD-DVD inside.
The question of motives is a never-ending one, and it has been rehashed more than once on Ars. The most common theory is that Microsoft is ultimately doing anything in its power to put the hurt on Sony's PlayStation 3, which will come equipped with a Blu-ray drive. The theory says that Microsoft is worried that the PS3 will dominate gaming once again, partially on account of the device's potential dual-role in the household: gaming console and Blu-ray player.
Microsoft's Media Center ambitions are huge, and in my opinion, they're bigger than those surrounding the Xbox 360. Make no mistake about it: the next version of Windows will be billed as an entertainment OS, and the Xbox 360 will be subjugated to that.

December 29th, 2005, 12:10 Posted By: wraggster
A worrying situation for Microsoft is emerging over the holiday period, with reports of self-booting Xbox 360 software being shared across the web, painting a picture of increased pressure on the console's defenses against piracy.
From what we can gather, an in-store demo pod was targeted by hackers seeking to steal the demonstration software it contained. The software has been taken, copied and leaked onto the Internet – though this isn't the whole story. Seemingly, the demo disc is a self-booting DVD-R and is fully copyable and will play on any retail Xbox 360. The wider possible consequences facing Microsoft following the release of this unprotected code are dire.
Talk is already engulfing hacker communities, many of whom see the 360 as a natural target – it is, after all, a Microsoft product holding the key to expensive per-disc entertainment solutions. Most talk at time of press focuses on splicing the code from the demo – the code which seemingly bypasses the in-built security features of the machine – with existing ISO copies of full retail games. As you may be aware, there isn't an Xbox 360 game released in any territory that isn't already available over peer-to-peer networks. The code is useless right now – completely unusable – though as revealed exclusively by SPOnG (and widely plagiarised across the web) mod-chips to enable usage of the copied code is expected within weeks.
“We've been seeing partial success from some corners [in China] though nothing that could go on sale yet.” a source close to the Chinese mod-chip research and development industry told us last week. “Everyone is working on a full-functioning 'do everything' chip that will take apart the 360 and let users do what they will, though we expect a first-generation bypass device that will allow back-ups within weeks. The first on the market is likely to be complex and might not be particularly good, though that's just a stopgap before real chips become available.” Though the emergence of the self-booting demo software does offer a new and unexpected option to those seeking to undo the 360.
Given that the disc comprises software that will play on a retail machine when cut to DVD-R, a boot-disc with disc-change (as seen on the PlayStation 2, Dreamcast, etc...) will be under development. As to whether this line of undermining will require any case modifications remains to be seen, though given the structural architecture of the 360's innards, this is unlikely to pose a huge problem for hackers.
So right now, the Xbox 360 faces what is looking to be an increasingly difficult battle to maintain its current level of security. We have mod-chips well underway in the Far East and now two potential openings resulting in the theft of an unprotected disc, namely the possibility that ripped games can be recompiled with the self-booting code included, or a boot disc unlocking the hardware and allowing pirate games to be played.
As ever, we'll keep you updated on the situation as it happens.

There are two rumours floating around in the video game industry. One rumour is, Halo 3 is ready to ship in January 2006. The other rumour is, Halo 3 will be ready to ship during Sony's PlayStation 3 launch which will be in Spring 2006.
However, with the recent launch of the Xbox 360, there was (is) little
to get excited about in terms of new games, with only 18 games available on launch. 2006 will prove to be much better with the release of games such as the hugely anticipated Halo 3.
While some US retailers have started taking pre-orders for the new game, the Microsoft Halo 3 title are expected to break sales records of 250 million set by the 2004 blockbuster, Halo 2.

Earlier numbers by Business Week may have reported that Microsoft is losing $126 on every Xbox 360 sold. That figure is now believed to be a bit higher by some. According to Insider Scoop, the world's largest software maker is losing upwards of $300 per console sold. From the article: "A high ranking friend at IBM, one that worked on the Xbox 360 chip design, tipped us regarding the real expenses involved in manufacturing the Xbox 360... 'It costs Microsoft approximately $715 to make, the manufacturing costs are still too high, another reason why they’re producing relatively small quantities.'”
If anyone has the money to blow, it's Billsoft. And if true, how long can the company stay in the red?

News from Xbox Scene
As you probably all know by now, the Demo Disc Microsoft sent to stores to run in their kiosks will also run from DVD5R, see our earlier news for more.
Here's a bit more info:
* Our users report you can change the .wmv files by other ones and they'll play on the 360 (without Windows MediaCenter PC)! Example changing '/videos/pgr3.wmv' file with another wmv-hd video will allow to play your wmv-hd video by booting the disc and going to games>pgr3>play video.
* PI's nfo file says: "datafiles on this disc isn't signed in any way". PI is right here, but many people don't understand this correctly. They mean datafiles like wmv, png, ... aren't signed. XEX/EXE files are still signed. The reason these executables run on recordable media is no 'hacking', it's simply because Microsoft set the 'mediaflag' so it can run from DVD+-R too. Nothing is changed in the XEX files on the disc, so the signatures (in XEX header) are still valid.
* You can't use this disc to boot retail discs/games (like by placing them in the /demos/ dir) as those are set by Microsoft so you can only run them from DVDXBOX(360) media (and might have a DVD physical structure check too?).
* Everything is playable, also the game demos (each has its own XEX/EXE file)
* If you add/remove files on this demo disc it'll still boot (as long as you don't remove essential stuff like /default.XEX of course), so this demo disc has no integrity test of the DVD.
Here are some other interesting details from Arakon on the xboxhacker.net forums:
* It's a simple ISO file you can read it with any ISO extractor. You can also browse the burned DVD in explorer.
* The Live Arcade games are infact standard flash games (atleast Hexic is). You can run Hexic in a browser that has the flash plugin installed. So the default.xex in the hexic dir might not be more then a flashplayer. He tried replacing the hexic flash file with another swf file, but the Xbox crashed (black screen) on that. If working ... it could be interesting for some homebrew flash games
* The playable demos are not accessible if the Xbox 360 launguage is set to German (it probably only works if set to english).
* There are more videos and pictures on the disc than those accessible via the Xbox 360 interface.

Well, the word on the street seems to be that Microsoft is rethinking their strategy on the XBOX 360. A lot of consumers feel that the release was mediocre at best but is that fair due to the lack of 360s distributed for opinion? Or does it solidify the opinion of mediocre? After all the rain and pointing the finger in the Microsoft offices, however we may feel about the release, one rumor still lingers; will there be a new XBOX 360 distributed containing a new HD-DVD drive?
Some sources say that the new console could be shipped as early as next year. Of course we all know that would mean, more space, more content, and possibly better games. But wait, doesn't that sound familiar to another console? Oh yeah, the Sony PS3 on the horizon. Maybe Microsoft is kicking themselves for not incorporating a next-gen media format for it's next-gen console. The only likely reason that Microsoft omitted HD-DVD drive initially stems back to money. Currently, Microsoft loses more than $125 per XBOX 360 sold. So, that would've meant more of a loss after the launch and is probably why they decided against it.
There have also been some recent reports from Japan that drown the entire idea of the "New 360". "Microsoft has not made any announcements in either America or Japan regarding possibilities of a next-generation disc drive to be equipped on the Xbox 360. We do not have any plans to release an Xbox 360 equipped with a next-generation DVD [drive] at the current time," the company said in a statement.
The question was asked, "Will there ever be a HD-DVD XBOX 360? Not any time soon, according to Microsoft Japan's Xbox operation chief,Yoshihiro Maruyama, who has publicly stated that the format "won't be used for gaming purposes for a while."
I feel that Microsoft didn't become one of the most successful companies in the world by luck. Yes, they lost money on the XBOX and they lost money on the 360 but where does that stack in comparison to the entire gross income of the Microsoft Corporation. They may have something up their sleeves, they always do. Will that something be an HD-DVD drive on a new andimproved XBOX 360? Well, we will just have to wait and see.

This is outstanding news and of major concern for Microsoft and their Xbox 360, Team PI have released the first selfbooting Xbox 360 Iso Disc, heres the full details from the Nfo file:
<blockquote>*** YES YOU CAN BURN THIS ISO AND PLAY IT IN YOUR XBOX-360 ***
Microsoft left us with this blanket statement:
Xbox 360 retail kiosks have started arriving at retailers. Due to the nature of the distribution process, not all kiosks are hitting simultaneously, but are continuing to pop up in retailers across the country in the coming weeks.
The kiosks are designed for a retail environment and feature game samples, game trailers and product information. Team Pi leaves you with this Pillow statement:
It seems Microsoft was in such a hurry to get this stuff out
that they forgot to set the media protection on this disc.
This leaves hackers with the posibility to hack around with
this disc that load from a normal DVDR5 backup! - Team Pi
also notes that the all datafiles on this disc isn't signed in
any way, and will allow for extensive modification for producing
exploits to further our efford to hack this box!
Playable (hackable) games on this disc: Call of Duty 2, Hexic, Kameo, King Kong. Also includes lots of game and accessory demos in video format.
Nothing ripped, just foreign videos were downsampled to fit onto a normal DVDR5!
YES you can run this! Burn the iso, put it into your xbox and be very amazed... Next, think of the posibilities of hacking this little demo disc that we might start running code on the retail xbox 360's !
So the second task is done. We hope this encourages all hackers, coders and crackers out there to take up the challenge. Enjoy!
Special note to the Clear kids: Yes, we are old and lazy, and no, we are not going to do some scene war against you. Life is too short for that, and our dicks are allready large enough
Keep up the hard work!
Pi Putting the 360' Spin on the Xbox :-)</blockquote>
This info was taken from the nfo named Experience_Xbox_360_Kiosk_Demo_SELFBOOTING_READNFO _PAL_DVD5_XBOX360-PI

Ok, the straight facts: the following link points to a neat, if rather nerdy, video of an Xbox 360 controller playing a MIDI controlled grand piano over USB. It also contains an emotionally scarring vocal performance by the two Microsoft developers in question that could possibly destroy you or the ones you love. We're skipping over a standard NSFW designation here and going straight to Not Safe For Anyone With A Human Soul (NSFAWAHS) on this one.

It appears that Halo 3 may be closer to fruition than many have feared: despite Bungie's refusal even to confirm that it is working on the next instalment of the blockbusting first-person shoot-em-up, stores in the US have begun displaying banners and furniture bearing the Halo 3 logo and the legends: "Coming 2006" and "Reserve yours today".
The news that US stores are taking pre-orders for Halo 3 will delight Xbox 360 owners hungry for blockbusting triple-A titles, and the game's release will undoubtedly drive sales of Microsoft's next-gen console, just as its predecessors shifted Xboxes. So it's tactically important for MS to get Halo 3 out as early as possible.
However pre-order campaigns often begin very early to lure you into parting with your lucre and they're no guarantee of a final release date at all. June the 1st has been bandied about as a launch date recently but US e-tailer GameStop, for example, have a provisional date of 03/10/06 (if we read those US date formats right) for Halo 3, but whether this is a true indication only time will tell.
Microsoft-owned developer Bungie has been uncharacteristically coy about Halo 3, but Bill Gates remarks suggesting that Halo 3 would launch concurrently against Sony's PlayStation 3 is about as close as anyone's got to naming an actual date.
For now, Xbox 360 owners will have to be content with playing Halo and Halo 2 for the original Xbox on their machines - the Xbox 360 can display both games in wide-screen at 720p resolution, with full-screen anti-aliasing. But with games like Gears of War also scheduled to arrive in 2006, things are looking rosy for Xbox 360-owning fps fans.
